    Fercho's Auto Installations

    (1 review)

First off I would like to say that this review is bittersweet. I thought I had begun to establish a…read morerelationship with Fercho's but time would tell otherwise. My car was repaired a couple of times at Fercho's without any problems what so ever. My old 1999 VW GTI was due for an inspection and my check engine light was on for some time which usually means that something is wrong with the emissions system. I took it to Fercho a couple months prior to get my car diagnosed to see what It would need. They informed me of several codes that were present but the main thing was the leak detection pump was bad and had to be replaced. If this was replaced then the code for my catalytic convertor may or may not go away as it was reading catalytic convertor inefficient. A new leak detection pump installed would cost me somewhere around 350. I told them thank you and that I would think about it...I picked up my car and paid the fee for having my car diagnosed. So I decided to go through with the repair but I supplied the part which I purchased on ebay for 100 and it was guaranteed to work or my money back. I gave Fercho the go ahead. The next day Fercho's called me and reminded me that changing the leak detection pump may not solve the issue with the catalytic convertor. I told them that I remembered that conversation and was still willing to proceed. Shortly after Fercho's calls me again and tells me that my catalytic convertor must be changed and emphasized their is no way around it. An aftermarket cat would run 563 installed. I told them I would think about it and was just not certain that I wanted to invest in a new cat or a newer car? I opted to replace the cat but only for a cheaper price. I mean I've had the cat changed twice in this car and each time its run me about 300 installed. I looked around online on Advance Auto Parts and Autozone and both sell universal cats for 100 or direct fit cats for about 250. Installing a direct fit cat is not that involved....unbolt the bolts to the flange and install new cat....clear engine codes and your off. I called Fercho back and informed them that I could supply a cat for a much cheaper price and that I really didn't want to sink that much money into a car that had 250000 miles on it. They said they would get back to me on that. Well I never heard anything back and finally after calling several times Fercho answered. I asked for an update on my car. They said there's some issues here. The mechanic feels like there is trust issues and no longer wishes to service your car. I'm a little shocked but I get it...they want to make the money off the parts and don't want me supplying the parts....sorry for trying to save myself hundreds of dollars I guess. So I arranged for my car to be picked up and there was no charge. Well the next day upon entering my car I see the box which my leak detection pump shipped in and the pump was inside never installed...oh yeah I did ask her the day prior if they installed it because I was expecting a charge but they told me no it was never installed?? At the time of that call it didn't dawn on me but the next day it did. Originally when they diagnosed my car they said it was bad and that if I change it then the cat codes may clear up. Well they didn't install it but they called me up and said that "there's no way around it your catalytic convertor must be changed". Don't you think they should of at least changed the leak detection pump before telling me this? So life goes on and I make an appointment with my old mechanic of over 10 years back in PA. They only work on VW and Audi and they are very honest and can't be beaten when it comes to price. So I take the car there and they call me up and tell me that my leak detection pump is functioning just fine and that my purge valve is bad. They replaced it for under 100 and that cleared up my check engine light. I then asked about my catalytic convertor and they said it was functioning normally and that it wasn't throwing any codes. Not only was it not throwing any codes but there was no prior codes stored for a bad cat in the computer. I was shocked as I felt Fercho's was trying to get over on me. The mechanic mentioned trust issues and your dam right there is trust issues but its the mechanic that I would never trust again with any of my vehicles. Unless you have no other options I would steer clear of this garage. Like I said in the beginning of this review...its bittersweet because the woman who works there in the office is very nice and always treated me just fine. I think there expertise stops with brakes and rotors etc etc...Its really tough to find a good mechanic in NJ and any VW or Audi owners out there having problems finding a good priced mechanic check out Paul Witmers Garage in Ephrata (Lancaster PA).

I called to set up an appointment and told them i wanted a basic car starter that only started the car thats it. I had problems with other places putting the security system on it that clashed with the factory alarm and loosing a key. They ensured i would get what i want and not loose a key. They told me it would be $250 with parts and install and I set my appointment for Saturday. I brought my car in Saturday morning around 9:15 since they said the earlier I bring the car the earlier I could get it back. The man told me that It would take around 3 hours to install once its in the garage but it was about 4 cars ahead of mines. I planned to be the whole day without my car reading previous reviews saying how long the service was. By 2:30pm i got a call saying it was ready to be picked up. When i picked it up i believe the owner showed me all the functions of the started and told me i had a lifetime warranty. My total cost came to about $274 with tax and a 6.96 "garage fee". All in all im very satisfied with their work. It didnt mind paying the extra tax because it was still less than the 320-350 other places were going to charge.
