I played the Country Club of Halifax with a friend this weekend. Overall, the course was in fine…read moreshape. However: Pace of play was terribly SLOW. One the 10 hole, the group in front of ADDED PLAYERS and split into two groups. The much slower playing four wives in front of the foursome of men. No rangers on the course. Zero oversight. Beer cart is CASH ONLY. Evidently, the owner is a clueless guy that inherited the golf course. He separated the restaurant from the club as running a restaurant proved too difficult for him. Neither my friend or I were carrying cash. No cold beverages for us. Again, the course is terrific. But the management, or lack of, is really killing the place. The owner should sell to someone that knows how to run a course. Too many second generation business owners are spoiled kids that don't have a work ethic. This seems like one of those places.

This is a private club which of course limits access to the general public however if you get a…read morechance to play here take advantage of the invitation. The course is long; playing around 6300 from the whites and 6700 from the blues. Greens and fairways are in excellent condition but the rough here is murder. If you do not keep the ball in the fairway you are in real trouble on this course. The opening hole is fairly easy letting you warm up. However by the time you get to number 4 you need to be playing well since the holes become increasingly tough. There are small narrow well marked creeks around the property. They are tiny but a real problem if you are not careful. The only real draw back to the course is the bunkers. They were hard packed but there was heavy rain the day before so crews may not have racked them the day I played there. Pin placements are very challenging but fair. The 10th hole is visually one of the nicer holes on the course. The 11th hole is a long par 5 with a monster green which slopes back to front. Very tricky putt if you are above the pin for a center pin placement. The number one stroke hole is a 436 yd monster. You need two really go shots to get there in regulation. Nice course, a great deal of fun to play.

The course was clean and well maintained. The staff was also accommodating and friendly, even though they were incredibly busy. I enjoyed my experience, and the golf cart of course is fun to drive. There's even a place to practice putting when you first arrive.

For $37 with a cart it doesn't get much better. The cranberry bogs are really pretty cool if you come at the right time of year. It is definitely a short course, but it won't be an easy play by any means, it's definitely nothing close to a pitch and putt. Certain holes become too short from the mid-tees (one hole went from 140 from the back tees to 65 yards from the whites which is a little ridiculous but that was the only such example). I have always been treated well here and it's always worth the drive in the summer. What's better than great, affordable Cape golf?

You will need to collect cash from your entire group, walk around with a pocket of cash, go to the bank to deposit it so you can pay the credit card bill.
