Come for the egg tarts! This is an amazing Portuguese bakery offering all kinds of baked goods and teas/coffees. I've tried each of their empanadas (beef, chicken, cheese), and enjoyed them all, but I thought the chicken was probably the juiciest and most flavorful. Just make sure to request any empanadas to be heated if you plan to eat them there. The star of the show though were the pasteis de nata (egg tarts). These Portuguese egg tarts have the CRISPIEST, buttery, flaky tart with a wonderfully sweet and smooth egg custard. It was just as good as the egg tarts that I've had in Portugal and were so much better than any egg tart that I've tried in NYC. They have a few locations in Newark. This location particularly is pretty big and the ambiance is really chill. I did show up around 8 am and it was empty. They speak Spanish, English and Portuguese so you can definitely find help with whatever you need. I've had the egg tarts which are delicious! And I've order some French bread and Portuguese bread a few times. They don't really have a menu so you kinda have to know why you want to order, or ask. I know they have sandwiches because I've heard people order before. I do need to go back to try them. It all tastes super fresh and soft! The french bread I bought from here I didn't eat until two days later and it still felt fresh, I just popped it in the oven and enjoyed it with some pasta. So good! We had Pastéis de nata for breakfast every day when we were in Lisbon last year. We were eager with the taste so much, it was difficult to find a similar one in NY and our friends recommended us to try Teixeira's Bakery. The decor of Teixeira's Bakery is clean, authentic with the traditional blue tiles but with limited seats. There was always a line but the wait wasn't too bad. We ordered 2 Pastéis de nata - Portuguese egg tarts, Rochas, Rissois De Camarao and Lanches Fiambre with 1 coffee and 1 latte for only $13 which was reasonable. The Pastéis de nata was the best, amazingly delicious, the custard filling was creamy but light and the tart was chunky but chewy bottom. We also love their Rissóis de Camarão - Portuguese shrimp turnover which was addictive, well flavored shrimp filling with mochi like layer. It was totally worth a visit even though we live 40-minute drive away. We will definitely plan to be here again. read more

My sister and I went out of our way to go there and support the bakery because we liked it the last time we went there. Upon arrival, we were greated by the cashier with horrific hostility even though my sister and I weren't rude to them, the entire time when I was ordering the older woman kept bucking at me like she wanted to fight me, and I was thoroughly confused. Then she proceeded to talk about me to her coworker in Portuguese thinking I wouldnt understand (even though I am a Portuguese speaker) and they also didnt have the empanadas that we wanted. We tried to order beef empanadas and she said they only have the chicken so we ordered something else. Once me and my sister got our food it was cold to the touch. So we left and then decided to come back to get a refund. The woman made it a big deal because I had lost a receipt even though we were there not too long ago. I said to her that she could count the items in the bag because everything was there and add it up and then give us back the money we were owed. They then proceeded to have a team huddle about how they wanted to handle the situation meanwhile I was being asked repeatedly why I wanted a refund and It was because we were treated terribly and the food was cold to top it off. Another woman started to ask us if we wanted anything in place of what we had ordered and I stayed firm in my request for my money back. This place is always clean and delicious! Amazingly warm, flaky, textured pastries call my name whenever I'm on this side of Newark. It's very popular in the Portuguese area and for good reason. They have lots of options though the most popular is the Pasteis de Nata. They have taken great precautions during COVID to protect us and themselves in this horrific mess of a time. The people are friendly and fast paced, shelling out dozens of orders in just a few minutes. The owner is such a friendly older Portuguese man who frequently tells me I remind him of his grand daughter, So I now regard him as my 'grandpa' when we cross paths. Being Asian, I've had a lot of variations of egg tarts in my day but none compare to the perfect Portuguese egg tarts served from this bakery. Every time my family has a gathering they look forward to my brother bringing a dozen or more of these delightful treats. These egg tarts are custardy, flaky but not greasy, sweet and perfectly caramelized on top adding to their appeal. They also have soft notes of vanilla throughout the tart that hit you as you bite into the delicate treat. Ever since I got back from Lisbon, Portugal, I've been craving some Pastel de Nata. Being in Newark, there is a Portuguese neighborhood with many bakeries to be had. So I am on a Pastel de Nata tour! The custard cups here are everything I've ever hoped for! I can't comment on anything else because that's the only thing I've tried! You place your order at the counter, they give you a receipt, you take it to the cashier & pay, and then they will prepare your order. This bakery can sometimes be very busy but they move really fast. There are a few tables and chairs there so you can eat in if you like. They have a public bathroom but you have to go behind the counter to get to it. This place is located in the very busy ironbound section of newark. Finding a parking space is a challenge but the goodness of the custard is well worth it!! This place is definitely a HIT! read more

This is so painful for me to write because this place is recognized for their famous and amazing Portuguese egg tarts. I knew that I had to come visit and find out if it's true after I read an article about it. Having eaten some of the best Portuguese egg tarts around the world, I was eager to see how these compare. Upon first bite, what I noticed was the texture, it was not eggy but more on the solid gelatin side. I didn't taste the egg, it was kinda bland. The crust was sort of thick and hard and not light, flaky and buttery. It wasn't just me, my companions both felt the same way. I'm giving this place 3 stars because maybe it was an off day? Surely we are mistaken? I also have to say that their other pastries and treats that we got were of mixed reviews. There were many patrons there that day when we visited. Many were locals who came in on a Sunday enjoying a bowl of their hot soups. Now, those looked real good to me. The ladies working there are adorable and friendly. Been coming here for two plus years regularly. I love this Portuguese bakery. On Saturday, they have the most delicious comfort chicken noodle soup. But the noodles are teeny tiny small balls versus a classic "Campbell soup" noodle or egg noodle. My photo today is a green pea and carrot soup with a small round noodle. It's thick, creamy and that's all I know. It's true comfort. I order a hot ham and white cheese sandwich. Soooo good. Today I'm having two "natas" which I always call "custard cups". They have a crust or shell that has a bit of a salt taste (not strong) to them which is perfect with the custard. The crust is flakey yet has a chew to it. It's just fabulous. My bill was $13.28 for soup, sandwich, two natas, can of coke and coffee. Not bad at all! Saturday's have a line at lunch. I've always been able to get a seat. Not a great place for large groups. 4 people would be pushing it at busy times. Not everyone speaks English. This is the Portuguese district. Frequented by locals, not tourists. Usually someone speaks English. Not always. They have always been able to figure out what I want with much patience and kindness. Consider taking a dozen natas to go for friends. My partner and I were on a quest to find the best pastéis de nata (Portuguese egg custard tart pastry) in the Iron bound section of Newark and Teixeira's won hands down after reading several Yelp's reviews. Upon arrival and because of the weather, there were only two patrons enjoying their meal at the bakery and one in front of us ready to pay. Social distancing was still enforced with masks and seating is limited to 30 minutes. One of the staff was very helpful to us in answering questions. We ordered 1/2 dozen of the egg tart pastries for $8.10, couple of wheat rolls, raisin bun and mini nata. There were several tables available which we sat to enjoy our purchase and admire the blue Portuguese tiles. The mini nata were delicious as it had such a nice flaky crust and creamy. The raisin bun was moist but no cinnamon. All in all, this bakery did NOT disappoint especially with its great prices, friendly staff and atmosphere. We highly recommend this place. read more

I used to come here a lot more often when I lived in the neighborhood because it was (is still) my favorite Portuguese bakery in the Ironbound. The staff is super duper friendly and their pastries are all yummy. I'm a fan of the chocolate croissant and coconut pastry, but the pasteis de nata (custard cups) are the clear winners here. I usually grab half a dozen of them anytime I'm nearby and if you come early enough, these things are so hot and so flaky and ugh I just love 'em so much. I miss the days when the custard cups were only $4ish for half a dozen, but I guess due to high demand they're now $7 for the same amount. Still worth it though. read more

My best friend and I went to the bakery after a long drive and were treated very poorly and were made to feel unwelcome. When we ordered, we asked for the beef empanadas and they didn't have them (strike 1). Then my best friend asked for bolos de bacalhau and they said they only had 2. My friend repeated what she said to make sure he her heard right. The older lady at the register then bucked at my friend and yelled at him (strike 2). When we sat down to eat our food, it was cold, ICE COLD (strike 3). We left and came back to get a refund, and we were asked why. My friend explained the food was cold and we didn't want it. The staff proceeded to have a 10 min huddle and made us wait to get the refund. We were met with more hostility and questioned on why after we had already explained. The same lady said she needed a receipt to give the refund. We didn't have the receipt. My friend explained since we were just there they can look it up in the computer. After going back and forth for 10 minutes the cashier finally gave my friend his money back. We've never had such a bad experience and we were disgusted with the poor treatment we received when we did nothing wrong. We will not go back. read more

The egg tarts here are delicious. Not the best that I've had (I grew up in Macau so have had very legit ones) but I think that these are the best in NJ. My only complaint was that the pastry crust wasn't perfect, but it was still very good. They are a little over a $1 each, which I think was fairly fair. Street parking only unfortunately. read more
