I signed up for NYCastings back in 2008. I stopped using the system when I realized there were…read morebetter platforms out there (ActorsAccess, Casting Networks, Mandy etc). Now a union member with representation, NYCastings does not serve me at all, but that's okay. I realize I am NOT the target demographic for NYCastings. The target demographic is nonunion, beginning actors, looking to do background or copy/credit/meals type projects. If you work for free or are a breathing mannequin, then you could still view this as a viable product for you, and that's okay. My problem comes with how after de-activating my account nearly 8 years ago, I recently started received cleverly FOMO-inducing marketing emails reading "Dear Talent, This is a quick notification that a Casting Director or Client of NYCastings.com has reviewed Your Profile while searching through our Talent Database. Please login to update any Pictures, Resume Credits, Video or Audio if you think it's needed. We want you to get those Auditions!" I started getting this email 2-3 times a DAY, and here I forgot I even had this account, having not logged in for 8 years! I log back in, but I can't find a way to stop the messages, and my account is listed as inactive, so I can't even de-activate to stop the messages. I try to delete my account, and am told they have to be done manually over the phone. So far this week, I have called every afternoon, to always hit voicemail in the member services extension. Today, I tried reaching the technical support extension, still voicemail. FINALLY, I decided to call the casting director line, and was able to speak to a person! I explained my issue to this man on the phone and he said I had to speak to technical support, I explain I have called a left several voicemails this week to which he says, "Well, I see all the voicemails and I don't see one from you, so I think you are lying to me. Sounds like you are lying." To which I responded "Wow, that's super rude," and he just laughed. For a company that requires you to use phone support to use their system, you would think phone support would have some decorum? He said he could not help me further and someone would call me back. Luckily, the technical support person, Mig, did call me back within minutes and was very helpful, but this process has taken far too long. Save your $12/month, save your energy. p.s. For comparison, ActorsAccess is $68/year (or $5.66/month), Casting Networks starts at $6/month and Mandy.com is FREE, Central Casting is FREE, Grant Wilfley is FREE, Playbill.com is FREE. Although, i left to focus on music . . . I will always treasure my time at the studio and HIGHLY RECOMMEND Cay to anyone seriously longing to learn the art of acting. I started studying with Cay about three or four years ago, and when I'm in town, I'm in class…read more I have studied a number of places, and I always felt that the teacher was pushing his own ego-driven agenda -- which was some version of "just invest in my technique, and I will make you a better actor... but if you're not working in exactly the way I tell you, you'll never be any good." I really feel that Cay's work is student-centered, and that I have become a much better actor during my time with her. And I've witnessed a lot of other people doing the same. Cay and I aren't best friends. We don't have drinks, and if there's an "inner/favored" circle of students, I'm not a part of it. But I love every minute I spend in that studio, and I'm so lucky to have found her. That said, not every teacher is for every person. I'm sorry that Callie and some others had bad experiences, and I think it's good that they left. Acting is, by its nature, incredibly personal. It's like choosing a therapist: there are lots of good ones, but if you're not personally connecting with them, then it's a good idea to move on.

I did need help, and for some reason I thought the more money I spent, the better assistance I would get. Not the case! First off, Resume Strategists charged me 3,000.00 for a resume, cover letter and linked in profile because they said I was "mid career". The resume process took about a month. The way they worded some of my accomplishments definitely sounded better than what I had originally. However, the overall result was that I sounded like the most lowest common denominator Office clone. I sent out about 20 of their version and got ZERO response. I then went over my resume and noticed that I had a history of collaborating with different teams to accomplish projects. I bumped up my summary and added some more details and got ONE response. Resume Strategists FAILED to quantify or qualify any of my accomplishments (I did that and they didn't even ask for numbers) and they FAILED to see a pattern of cross-functional team collaboration and highlight that in the summary. Some of the resume revisions I could tell hardly any thought went into them at all. The linked profile? what a joke, just a regurgitation of your resume. The cover letter - they give you one final version. Frankly, the cover letter sucked. It was, again, my resume regurgitated. And the "career counseling" - is the most average, basic info that is easily found by doing an internet search. They do not have any inside knowledge or cutting edge information. And in the final meeting, we barely got into the interview questions because we went over on time. Which they promptly stopped at the allotted time because they had someone else to price gouge waiting. You don't work with Alyssa, who is touted on their website. I never even met her. And they have very nice full floor office in midtown Manhattan. Now I know why the price is so high! Gotta meet that overhead for the swank office. Knowing all I know now, this is how I would approach writing my resume. Having an objective person or more than one person look at it is valuable. So I would go to Craigslist where there are tons of people offering resume-writing for around $50 and hire 4 of them that stood out to me. When I had the four versions, I would sit down, google search for relevant key words and create my own resume using the material I already had. Summary: Resume Strategists is NOTHING SPECIAL and NOT WORTH 3,000.00!

The experience has been a very positive one, as it has helped me further prepare for interviews. This gives me a greater confidence in my abilities and how I speak about myself. I am in the midst of relocating to the East Coast and there is no room for error in hitting my goal; this was not the time for a DIY effort.
