I've been wanting to check out Temescal Brewing for some time now, after stumbling upon one of their colorful and unique beer cans at a brewery in Dublin! Luckily Temescal Brewing is literally a 3 minute walk from from the MacArthur Bart Station, which makes it convenient for those visiting from San Francisco! The aesthetics here are absolutely gorgeous and you can't help but want to snap a bunch of photos inside with the gorgeous plants and funky pink walls. The beers here are also delicious and they offer nice selectin of IPAs and Hoppy Beers. My favorite beer is the Right Brain, which is a Tropical Hazy IPA. Fruity yet a bit hoppy! I came with 4 people (roommates+SO) and 2 dogs and was very surprised at how safe and confidently everything was handled. We made an online reservation via their website the day before (for a Saturday evening). We had to wait ~5 minutes and purchase food tickets at $2/pp before entering, but were quickly seated at a large table at least 10 ft away from other parties. We scanned a QR code on the table and each placed our own drink order, paying online. The beer cans (16oz) were picked up in a "vending machine" style cabinet, one cubby for each table. We used the tickets purchased at entrance for a halal plate from the rotating food truck on the lot. The beers and food were delicious, and the atmosphere perfect. I love the can art. I definitely considered buying some to bring home, but since it's so close to my house I think I'll return in person again instead. My only gripe is that the beers felt a little one-dimensional. They were almost entirely (hazy) IPAs the day we were there with only one stout and one pale ale besides. Their normal beer list looks varied, so I think it must be a COVID-effect. In order to stay open for outdoor dining according to the city's law, "meal tickets" are required. Essentially you're paying $2 or so if I recall per person for a ticket to use towards the food truck that they currently have. It's a pain to get setup the first time. Also not always the best choice of food truck. You use an app to order beers and pick it up yourself when you get a notification. I enjoyed the guava boat. The sour beer I ordered was ok, but expensive. The better choice during covid is to just grab that 6 pack of guava boat togo and enjoy it at home. read more

I love all the vibes you get from Temescal. It is such a great place to relax after a hectic week or a place to go with friends and laugh the night away. There is a beer for everyone's taste buds, but I feel most are on the hoppier end of the spectrum. There are plenty of tables outside as well. Staff is friendly. All COVID precautions are taken. They even have a contactless way to pick up your beer. So at least come to check that out because it's pretty cool. This most recent time I came with two friends and we were seated immediately on a Thursday at 5pm. They do also take reservations if you are a bigger group. I got the Paloma and loved it. It's what they call and porch crusher lol. They always have a food truck out and actually require you to purchase a $2 food ticket that you can redeem at the food truck. When I was there, it was a taco truck. Super authentic and shout out to the pork quesadilla! Definitely recommend for a chill place to enjoy company and some beer! read more

My go-to place for beer! I live walking distance away, and it's about a 4-minute walk from MacArthur BART but there's plenty of street parking as well. It's a great place to come when it's nice outside because of the large outdoor space but it stays cozy even in poor weather. I love all the beers, especially the Hazy IPAs and the set-up is really cute. They sometimes host craft fairs and they always have at least one food truck available. Came here on a Thursday night. My first time coming and I was joined by a friend. The employees where very helpful in explaining the new set up with COVID going on. I love the contactless ordering, more than 6ft between us and the next customers. I had the simcoe beer and my friend had the This one's for you. Very flavorful beer with a nice citrus tone to them. We ordered chicken tacos from the taco truck that's parked by the patio and they had a ton of flavor and they where also super friendly. I get my beer, and the beer is fine (nothing to phone home about but it's nice and enjoyable), but there's never a pleasant interaction around it so it's hard for me to give the full 5 stars. However, the outside patio area is a really cool place to spend time day or night, summer or winter (they have heaters). My favorite little craft brewery in Oakland! Very community-oriented space with fun events, friendly staff, and good vibes. In the winter, the back patio is tented and heated so it's cozy. Not an especially wide selection of beers (usually 12-15) but more than you would expect from how small the location is. Unique offerings like a smoky mazcal-inspired gose and a Turkish coffee porter, as well as standard pourings IPAs, Hazys, and Pilsners. Relatively attentive service, even when it's busy. Rotating food trucks outside and snacks inside. Definitely my go-to spot for local beer. I liked it enough that I bought one of their hats and it's a really good hat. read more

And then when it got a little chilly, it was super warm and toasty inside. The downside was the beer. I'm a stout drinker and the only stout, Old Smuggler, leaves a lot to be desired. This beer joint pretty much follows the current formula for every up-and-coming Oakland bar that people with puppies, beanies/hats, piercings, app-ideas, and love for the GS Warriors, flock to. Now, this isn't a bad thing, but would you disagree? Patio picnic tables, food trucks, heating lamps, view of the brewing vats, IPAs--you name it. Korean tacos. Despite this over-analyzing first paragraph, Temescal Brewing is a great place to chill out with friends over some local brewskis! Unhappy visit due to overly amped staff. -- Move on while you can I came to Temescal Brewery to have post pandemic drinks with friends that I haven't seen in ages. What struck me from the beginning was the attitude from the host when I asked him, "how long do you think the wait will be?" He seemed taken aback by this question and replied with some sass. I didn't take it to heart, but obviously I did notice. The second thing that occured was my friend forgetting her ID in the car as they went up to order from the bar. They let her know this, so she did not order a drink. She took this graciously, though the rest of us were disappointed with this news. She did not fight this at all or create any kind of scene. Everything regarding this was completely peaceful. After they let us know, I got up to order from the bar lady to get my own drink with her husband, only to have them remind us not to give any drinks to our friend. Her husband replied as nicely as he could to let her know we were aware. She was not so nice in return. We finally got settled and had our drinks only to have that same woman come out to the host.... And point at us. Obviously to remind him that our friend cannot have a drink. We let all of this slide.... Only to have that same host come up to us and tell us that we can't have drinks in front of this same friend because his manager said so. The policing here was extremely excessive. Honestly, if she wanted to drink beer that bad we could have just brought it home. No one over the age of 21 is that desperate. The staff here were completely ridiculous. Conclusion: If you want to be treated like a criminal, while enjoying mediocre drinks-- even if you obviously look like a grown adult, then come by. Otherwise, be smart and hard pass. This is my second time visiting. Stopped here on a Friday night and it was packed. I was not expecting such a busy and lively scene. There was a DJ playing and people all over. My first time was a Saturday afternoon and the atmosphere was less crowded. Very laid back and welcoming. My dog enjoyed her stay when she visited. The Friday vibe was too crowded for me. You wanna know why I'm so obsessed with Oakland? Because they produce some of the BEST and most unique retaurants, bars, and pubs around! And, let's not forget about the wonderful people that you find here too. Temescal Brewing is a perfect example of this! They offer great beers that are all made in-house, a very chill and fun atmosphere, and they come equipped with a great staff and the most wonderful people around! I'm a red wine gal at heart, but I've been trying to step my beer game up. I've always been that girl in the group who gets a glass of wine at the pub while all of my friends tease me and get their beers. Like wine, Beer is definitely an acquired taste that I haven't yet "acquired". I've tried it from time to time, but I never quite found what I liked until now. A few nights ago, I decided that I would go beer tasting in hopes of finding a beer that I liked. I was in the Temescal area and had heard great things about Temescal Brewing, so I decided to check it out. I looked them up on Yelp and saw that on this particular night that it was "bring your own" food night. They usually have food trucks, but I guess they didn't have one this time. No problem! I stopped by Provino down the street and got 2 slices of cheese pizza and headed there. When I walked in, I was instantly drawn to the mellow vibe and comfy décor. There are booths with pillows and a couple of tables available for lounging. I took a seat at the bar and was greeted by Bethany. She asked me what I was in the mood for and I explained to her that I was pretty new to the beer scene and wanted to sample a few beers to find one that I liked. She asked me if I was into sour and dark or something on the lighter side. I definitely opted for something lighter! Bethany gave me the low down on the different styles of beers and she also gave me a "splash" of a few to test them out even before I purchased anything. You can create your own flights here! It's only $2 for a generous 3 ounce pour, and if you want to try before you buy, try a "splash" which is basically another name for a sample. She informed me that they also had rotating taps and that everything was made right there in house. Nice! I sampled the Mondo Pilsner, "Far and Wide" Blonde, "Are you ready for the country" Kettle sour w/ fruit, the Apricot Saison, and their popular pale ale by the name of "Spa Treatment". I was really digging the cute names of the beers! So of course my favorite one was the Kettle sour with fruit because it was sweet and fruity like a cocktail! But, I also really enjoyed the Pilsner and the Saison. Was this really possible? The wine lady actually found a BEER that she liked? I was so stoked! I created my own flight and went with the Pilsner, Kettle sour w/ fruit, and the Apricot Saison. I sipped and chatted with Bethany and a couple of other girls the entire night! They really made me feel comfortable and my tab for the night was only $6! Whaaat? You can't beat that baby! Temescal brewing also has a HUGE outdoor patio that can fit up to 200+ people. I know this place is poppin' during the summer time! It wasn't super busy since it was raining that night, but they had a section of their patio covered so that people could still sit outside. Complimentary popcorn too? I'm all for it! The also fill growlers and you can bring your own or purchase their own that come in a few different sizes. I had such an awesome experience here! I can't wait to come back to try their new beers and to see what food trucks are out next time! When you go, ask for Bethany! She is truly a star! Saturdays, like most breweries, are busy af here so finding a seat might be hard pressed and even getting a bartenders attention as well, but don't give up. The beers here, especially their IPAs are tasty enough to wait. It's great that they involved the local food truck companies to host certain days, because who doesn't want pupusas with their cervesas? I'd like to come back during their slow hours so I could hear my conversation, and hopefully find better seating underneath their gigantic heater.
