Not only does it promote earth-friendly practices, you also get some money back in return. Fortunately, there are places like the Downtown Metals & Recycling Center to help you out with that! What sweetens the deal with this place is that it's open 24 hours a day! How convenient is that? Word of caution: This is in Downtown's Warehouse district, which means it's not the nicest of neighborhoods. That being said, the later you go there, the shadier the characters seem to get. But does this fact scare away our heroine, her roommate and a Honda Fit full of electrical wiring on a Thursday night? Hardly. It's a little tricky to spot, especially heading southbound to the place since it's in such an unassuming building left hand side (It's just south of the Texaco in a blue building). What's nice is that you can pull right into the building, or park the car just outside or on the street (we opt to head right in). They have various containers of different sizes for you to unload your stash, but I highly recommend pre-packing your goods beforehand to make things go faster, then you can load it all up into a rolly bin quicker and you're good to go. They recycle boxes too if you used them for transport, but you don't get any money for that. Another word of caution: Yes. The place has a lingering odor of alcohol and bum. Yes, there are some unsavory characters hanging about. For sure you're going to want to wash/sanitize your hands and/or just bring gloves with you because the whole place is filthy. And it goes without saying I locked and alarmed my car whenever I stepped 5 paces away from my car. For those of you who aren't so keen on this kind of encounter, just think of it as broadening your horizons. What I found entertaining as my roommate raked in her cold, hard cash ($75 worth) is to step on the big scale for large volume weigh-ins. It's like going on the carnival where your weight is displayed at the cashier's booth. I haven't weighed myself in a minute, and it's a good thing, I suppose. But oh, it's off since I'm carrying this huge Rubbermaid container. Ah, wait, I have my cell phone with me, and my keys. Um, I'm wearing this jacket also, and these shoes have a bit of weight on them, too right, and there's my glasses and my ponytail elastic...

But~ it's a recycling center...these places are innately grimey lol. However, it's hard to find reliably open and convenient recycling centers in DTLA and this seems to be one. Another big plus, they have a few parking spots. It does seem to get busy at peak times though. My friend and I went during a weekday lunch hour and it was packkeeeed! We had to spend the whole hour there because the line was so long. So try to avoid lunch hour if you can to save yourself the headache.

I volunteered to redeem the munched plastic bottles, rattling cans, and occasional bottle we found while tidying up the neighborhood. I was pleasantly surprised. Glendale Recycling Center is efficiently run and the service is great. The staff helps move the lines along and everyone is very nice and hardworking. And if I read the prices correctly, GRC pays a few cents more for plastics + cans than those SuperA grocery store guys in a delivery truck. I know this because I left the SuperA guy in Cypress Park when he decided to take his lunch 15 mins. early and close up shop. Glad I looked to YELP and found this place in a snap without wasting time. Also, this place is almost like an all-in-one recycling center where you can not only get CRV money, but also drop off old electronics, all those Amazon cardboard boxes, and some other things that you can't throw into your regular trash bin. (Some items they don't accept, but they'll direct you to where you can take them.) Since this was a pleasant & relatively painless experience, I just might make a daily habit out our Earth Day practice and return every now and then.

I've been trying to be better and recycle everything, treating this Earth well. Once a month, I like bringing my plastics and getting a little cash money for them. I usually fill a big black bag and it's around $15. On this last trip at Dejas, they could tell it was my friend and I's first time at the location and helped us a bit with our sorting. They were patient and helpful! Plus when our total was $18 and some change they just gave us a $20 as a first time customer bonus! So unnecessary but kind! We parked along the street as we knew it would be a quick trip in & out. It's located in a clear spot though and identified more clearly than similar places. We'll definitely be doing out recycling here from now on! It's way cleaner than other spots and such a better experience overall.

However, the 2 reviews were glowing and I decided to give it a shot even though this place is a little far from my house. The place was easy to access and the young man (the owner, I believe) was exceptionally helpful. The place was clean and I believe I received more than a fair amount for the cans/plastics. I will be definitely coming back to this location to recycle!

Our plumber brought his apprentice over who knew there are 3 different price levels. Pure copper pipe. The parts that connect that have solder. And the brass parts Upon arriving we thought there would be an entrance in the back alley. Nope. Customers unload in front on San Fernando Rd. An attendant will give you garbage containers to haul metal in. We had 3 types so 3 bins. When the man at the weigh station put the copper on I was watching the screen and took a photo. (Our plumbers apprentice had warned us about this place and said the best price was in Simi or Sunland...too far and too long for our meager amount) Then he weighed the other two while we were talking with another staff member. (Shouldn't have been distracted while conducting business) The guy at the scale shows us the total and I realize the Copper 1 was now much lighter than the original weight! I showed him the photo on my phone and he corrected it! In hindsight I should have had all 3 weighed again. But we were tired, dirty and the whole process pretty depressing and I didn't want to make a huge deal out of it. So consumer beware! It's a good service they provide and somewhat convenient location. But be aware and pay attention!
