In my experience Ace Hardware locations tend to be pretty good, and this is one of the best. But I recently made the mistake of going to a different location that wasn't so great. Location and parking are two big draws for Tenleytown Ace Hardware. They are right on top of the Tenleytown metro stop in the basement under the Best Buy store. A big plus for their free underground parking! They offer lots of products, including helium filled balloons, but they neglected to prepare our pre-ordered balloons for a birthday party and almost made us disappoint 15 two-year-olds. On another visit one of the clerks called me "chief" as in "hey, chief, need some help?" Hmm... But generally the staff has been pleasant, knowledgeable and helpful. Overall, a good place in a good location stocking everything you would expect from a good hardware store and even a few things you would not. read more

Words I would never use to describe myself: handy. Do-it-yourself-er. Fixer-upper. And yet, I love Ace Hardware. I live in a crappy apartment designed for 20-somethings who don't know better, and even if they do, can't afford much else. So when my landlords will charge me for a simple fix I can do myself, I hit up Ace. I don't know if it's my strand of pearls or bewildered look, but I attract assistance from the staff immediately upon entering. I've always found the staff knowledgeable, ready to assist, and full of great product recommendations. Pete, the darling man who assisted me last night, even went out of his way to have me NOT spend money. From replacing an ancient showerhead, to eliminating giant cockroaches, to unclogging a stubborn toilet, Ace has always delivered solid service. I've noticed their prices are slightly steeper than, say, Rodman's or Giant for cleaning and decorative products, but I chalk this up to convenience. Their selection rivals their website (impressive) and usually features a range of prices, accommodating a neighborhood of cheapskates, college students, and established families rehabbing their beautiful upper NW homes. Where do they find these glorious people? I usually dread going into the hardware store, but not this one! They've helped me change weird track lighting, fix the toilet, unclog the drain, open the back of my laptop with a tiny mini screwdriver, "winterize" my car, i.e. all those odd little things that pop up in life. Every single person (be they tall or short, women or men, young or old, black or white, long hair or short hair, high school kids or semi retired folks) who's ever helped me over the past 3 years or so has been nothing but awesome. They just have a way of interacting with you. In fact, they should open a walk in mental health clinic (like shrink Lucy in the Peanut comics) next to the paint aisle. Some folks have honestly walk out of this hardware store feeling more touched than after visiting a Belgian Chocolatier, a baby clothing shop, a psychiatrist convention. read more

I usually receive excellent in the ACE farther down on Wisconsin. Thus has nit a,ways been the case here. Today I absolutely demeaned by a worker who did not know what I was looking for despite that I had the item in my hand. He then reluctantly said it was in aisle five. Fair enough. I asked what aisle we were in and he relived two...and that means walk to three, four and five,..,totally and absolutely insulting and patronizing. Avoid this store. read more

Yes! It doesn't get any better than this for an in town hardware store. The employees are helpful and incredibly knowledgeable. They're everywhere too. I did a painting project this summer (my daughter's bedroom) Christina? was so incredibly helpful--she told everything you could know about brushes, wall taping (take it off while the paint is wet!) and paint quality. She even helped me pick a color theme. The highlight has to be the unusual candies and drinks and OMG FRESHLY MADE HOT BUTTERED POPCORN AND IT'S FREE. My kids love to go this place. There are chocolate caramels in bowl on the counter and a refrigerator case filled with artisanal soda pop. This hardware store is like a dream for tool and candy fetishists. Is that a thing? The cavernous location in the underground parking lot really is the coup de grace of this store. Edit: Just a thought. They should just set up a bar next to the pesticide section as you walk in to the right of the store. They already play cool 70's R n B and alternative 80's music on the loud speaker as it is. They could have a bartender wearing an Ace Hardware vest and headset wryly ask: "what's your poison?" read more

The prices are a bit high here, but it's DC (and at least you're not giving your money to Walmart/Target/etc.) This location also doesn't really have any surrounding competition, so they can charge what they want. Despite that, I love this store because the customer service is UNBEATABLE. The staff here are friendly and always go above and beyond so I will continue coming back! read more

Very positive experience here! We walked in looking for someway to attach our new DC plate to a car we inherited from PA (where only the back plate is required). We found Jeanette, who was EXTREMELY helpful for us. We explained our needs, and she took out a license plate frame from the package to see if it would fit. After we found that it did not work, she took our license plate in the back and drilled some extra holes in it so that it would fit. We only paid for the screws and fasteners that we ultimately needed to attach the plate. Truly is The Helpful Place! read more

I love love love this store. Mostly because I love hardware stores, but there are a few things that make this one special: easy parking, excellent selection, friendly employees, and it looks like they hire and educate their staff, which is pretty clutch and gives deserved job opportunities to the non-cylons among us. After price checking a few things against Amazon, I realized it's often less expensive to purchase at Ace's brick and mortar. Cool. My one wish is that management relax what is clearly a rule the staff must ask every customer they see if they need help. I get asked on average five times when I'm there. Not exaggerating. They're friendly, but sometimes, a girl just likes to browse a hardware store alone. read more

Great customer service from Max! I've been coming to this Ace Hardware since 2009. It's astonishing that it is still around given its secret location underneath Best Buy off the Tenleytown metro station. You can easily access the store via the underground parking deck, which will validate your parking to boot. The store is smaller and the aisles are cramped, but they have a lot of stuff in stock. Usually just about everything you need is here for your basic to intermediate projects. We came in needing a bunch of special bolts. They didn't have the exact kind in stock, but we were about to make things work with equivalent bolts. To find everything, we had amazing customer service from Max, who spent a good 15-20 minutes with us going through drawers of bolts until we found what we needed. Thank you!! read more

I love the Ace Hardware chain. I used them all the time in CA and still now that I've moved to D.C. I needed some keys cut and, while the employee was super friendly, he cut my keys wrong and I had to come back a 2nd time, which was no small task. I took the metro with my husband the first time I came here, which was a mistake as I was having extra car keys cut. When I got home with my newly cut keys, I discovered it didn't work. I called and, pretty unapologetically, the employee said I could come back and have the keys re-cut or I could just get a refund. Seeing as I only paid $2 and some change for the key and then paid $2.70 roundtrip for each me and my husband, I would have lost money just getting a refund. I was irritated that they wouldn't offer a consolation - an extra new key, perhaps? - for having to come back (especially since I mentioned I had taken the metro). Anyway, I went back with the car this time. And the guy who re-cut the keys was awesome. Totally the only redeeming factor in this minor snafu. He cut they key and insisted on coming out to the garage and personally checking that he did it right. He was also very apologetic (unlike the other employee) and kind. All in all, an ok experience. This issue won't prevent me from coming back to this location. read more

Ware ye travelers, for to reach this store, you will have to plumb the depths of hell! Or at least, a really dingy parking dungeon that I think was built in 1950 and makes me glad every time I go that DC isn't a tectonically active area. The store is crammed in to what was once part of that parking area, with aisles and items crammed in wherever there is space (or not). I'm guessing the staff is so friendly because only Satan himself could walk to and fro among their shelves and find anything quickly. Not their fault though, ACE Hardware in general as a business has always been insanely arbitrary in their shelving designs, or so it always seemed to me. Anyway, the store is close, the single checkout can be crowded, and finding stuff is a nightmare sometimes, but their staff makes it all up. Hard to find. It is inside one of the corners of the parking lot. I went through Wisconsin Ave. and ended up taking the escalator twice in confusion. They are pretty expensive for lightbulbs. I ended up spending 15 for 5 of their brand name lights. The CVS across the street sold it for much cheaper. The plus side is that the staff were very nice. read more

Went to Ace today, primarily to get keys made: 4 of one key, and 4 of another. When the guy finished, he handed me all 8 keys in one bag. I said "oh, they're all in the same bag?". He said "oh yeah, sorry about that". I asked for another bag, so I could try and compare the keys to sort them and he gave one to me. It would have been a nice gesture to sort them for me, I thought - since he's probably got a way better eye for the minor differences then I do...but oh well. Got home this evening and tried all 8 keys out....2 of them didn't work (tried both doors). I'm sure when I go back, they will make them again, but it's annoying to have to do, I'd expect it to be right the first time..... I generally like the store, which is why I'm giving it 2 stars instead of 1! read more

Great local hardware store like the old days! Wide and varied selection of home, garden, repair items for the entire house. Plenty of helpful staff on floor who will walk you through your shopping list - like where do you keep the #6 brass flat head wood screws! They seem to have a bit of everything or will order something for pickup a couple days later. We have been going since they opened. Saves a trip to the big box stores outside the beltway. Yesterday we went for outdoor patio furniture and got a metal table and 2 chairs with cushions for $129. The floor walkers carried it to my car and put the set into the car - no work for me. My wife got her list filled of filters, gardening stakes, wire fencing, bedside clock, grass seed, birdseed...you get the picture. Yesterday we were helped by 4 different staff and the assistant manager, Ryan. In the big box stores I have to look for the right expert who may be 2 aisles over helping someone else. Hence, five stars. Keep up the excellent service. read more

My work in property management sends me here whenever our regular vendor can provide something staff needs to make a repair. Over the course of 15 years, I've never been let down by Ace. The staff members are enormously knowledgeable both about their products and about DIY repairs in general. On the rare occasion they haven't know what aisle to send me to for a requested product or that they don't have experience in making a repair I seek guidance on, within a minute, they're introducing me to a staff member who can help. Their efficiency makes it easy to get in and out of the store swiftly, which I appreciate enormously these days. They've faced covid 19 bravely and responsibly as part of a mostly unrecognized front line of workers enabling societal and physical structures to operate for the safely and efficiency of those among us who have the option of cherry picking risks we take, or even of isolating ourselves from risk altogether. I gotta give kudos to Ace. Most of their service workers are top notch and Kazimir the manager is professional yet personable. So many good on the ball helpers if you're stuck trying to find the right part and plenty of underground parking with 1/2 hour validation. 2 handicapped parking spaces. It's one of my favorite Ace locations to go to. While I wish the store would be bigger it good to have a locale store to go to. Also a hop , skip and a jump to other good shopping! read more

During Covid 19 you would expect a nicer service but instead they are less helpful then before. I went to exchange some large empty soda stream cylinders and they said you could return them only until April 1 st so I went on the Sodastream website that says you could exchange them for the smaller ones until the end of May but of course Ace did not bother to check the website. They were most unhelpful also to buy toilet paper! read more

This little store seems to have most of what you need in a hardware store - very well stocked. There is free one-hour validated parking below the Best Buy, and then you can walk right into the hardware store. Access the parking lot from Brandywine St (I think that's it) going east up the hill from River to Wisconsin. Yes - this is an ACE hardware but I think they are franchises and independently owned - or at least that was the impression I got. The people are very friendly and helpful, although not always as knowledgable as Strosneider's in Bethesda. If you doubt the perrson's expertise, just ask if there is anyone else who is really familiar with the product/issue and they will find you someone. read more

Tenleytown Hardware - brought to you by the people who brought you Logan and Glover Park Hardware - doesn't have the sheer size of, say, a Home Depot, but that's incidental. It's got all the basics and then some, a very knowledgeable staff who made this home improvement novice feel comfortable and not stupid (though I'm hella ignorant of hardware and its peripherals), and the most convenient location in NW DC, just above the red line's Tenleytown/AU metro and on the corner of the major intersection of River Road and Wisconsin. Seriously, the staff makes this place a winner. They seem sincerely happy to help (and this being DC, actually running into genuine sincerity is pretty cool). read more

Tenleytown Ace Hardware is really a GREAT place to shop! The amount and variety of supplies they manage to squeeze into a relatively small space is amazing. But - as many other reviewers have said - the biggest plus of this place is the staff. They are knowledgeable, helpful, and patient. They know their stock and can advise you whether to buy the whats-it or the widget because they have a clear idea of how things work. And they are pleasant and reasonable about taking things in return that don't work out. They are right below The Container Store - another GREAT PLACE to shop - and the two stores seem to be designed for one another. If one of them doesn't have an item, frequently the other one does. And they have a terrific attitude towards one another - many times I have been in one of the stores and, not finding something, the salesperson has suggested that I try the other store. They are right by a METRO stop (AU-Tenleytown) -- the escalator literally comes to street level 15 feet from the door that takes you down one flight (by elevator or escalator) to Ace's basement location. This is a solid Ace Hardware in a convenient DC location. It is a bit small, but the staff was very knowledgable. They walked me through the best supplies and method for cleaning out my kitchen and bathroom fans. They also validate parking, which is great. Fantastic customer service. I have often be redirected to what I actually need rather than what I thought I needed. They have a very convenient and inexpensive tool rental policy. (I rented a hammer drill for 24 hours for $10) They also validate for their convenient parking. My only issue is also what makes them so nice probably and that is their size. Often they do not have the size of item you need or the exact fitting and they will tell you what to get but you end up having to go to a big box. But when they have what you are looking for, their is no more pleasant place to shop. read more

I don't know why I haven't reviewed this place yet, since I've been coming here for almost a year now, but after my visit today, I had to say something. I love Ace Hardware Tenley b/c the staff is awesome. Today I was asked FIVE (YES FIVE) times (five different people, too!) if I needed help. Go to Home Depot and wait for someone to ask you if you need help. I had to practically drop dead in the middle of the paint section for someone to notice me one time (at Home Depot). Oh, and don't get me started on walking from the Metro up to HD....yeah it's a lot of fun getting whistled at by all the construction dudes on the side of the road while you walk up that huge hill (guys, I don't know if you have this problem, probably not, but if you're a chick w/two legs, T&A, forget it, you might as well keep that dirty look on your face for the entire 7 minute walk it takes to get there). Anyway, I know Ace has a smaller selection than Lowe's or HD, but seriously, they have a lot packed in that tiny basement, and it's the service that counts. If you are a home how-to know-it-all and it annoys you to be asked constantly if you need help, then perhaps this isn't the place for you....but you should give it a try anyway. Ok this review is getting long, but whatever, one quick story: I went in there and asked how to mount this middle eastern rug to my wall. The guy spent 30 minutes helping me figure out a way to make it look good and not cost me too much. He really cared, or maybe he was just really good at acting...either way, you can't get that service many places. read more

First time I went there they cut me a set of keys and I got a great flashlight. Second time they helped me select grout from an overwhelming array of options. Third time a guy was very patient with me and helped me select a light timer. They carry a wide selection of cleaning agents, household goods, and suprisingly -- applicances (microwaves, etc). You can pretty much outfit your new place here. Very nice people. Larger than it appears to be from the street. It's below Best Buy and the Container Store. read more
