5 Stars may seem like a lot for West Bank sushi bar but, along with Kanno, this is the best sushi in the area. Compared to say sake or rock n sake, it's not even close. I have been here twice and the quality of sushi has been outstanding. Yellowtail and salmon r good ways to judge the quality of sushi restaurant. Fresh, melt in your mouth like butter quality. Normal price and nice size pieces. Unagi fantastic as well. I got a little out of my zone and tried the scallop. Excellent and nice presentation. See pic. We arrived here at 7:00pm, and there was no one here, but me and my family were kind of happy about that because we get the place to ourselves! But some other people did come. My aunt and uncle are friends with the workers who are here, and they were super nice and friendly. Tennou has a TV for us to be entertained, but me and my family mostly talked to each other. Their sushi is delicious and looks great every time I've eaten here, but my only criticism is how tightly the sushi is rolled. Returned here last week after a few years of being in Baton Rouge and I've always had the same issue - the pieces fall apart too easily. I'm no newbie to sushi so it's frustrating when the pieces fall apart between plate to mouth so often. Whether this means it's not rolled tight enough or they're offering you so much inside the roll that it can't take it, I'm not sure. I've been coming here for a while and just never posted a review on it. I haven't dined in recently, but I do order takeout and it's pretty good. I come here for basic sushi rolls and a few of their special ones. They used to do a happy hour with certain rolls on there for like $3.25-3.50 from what I can remember, but they stopped doing it because people would come in and get a table, order a lot, barely eat and take the rest to go. Issue with this is that servers weren't getting tips. I know this because a former server is a customer that dines in at my old workplace. Sucks they took it away, but I can also see why. My order is always right and comes with all the sauces on the side if they're included on the roll which I like because I know of a few places that'll put the sauces on the roll and it just becomes a soggy mess. Some of my favorite rolls are crunchy, spicy tuna, metairie, sexiest man and tuna lovers. Their crunchy flakes that come in the crunchy roll are ACTUALLY crunchy. I've had it at several places where the flakes just seemed soggy. And that's when I dine in too. I'll still have crunchy flakes from here with takeout so that's a plus. Never had an issue with fish not tasting fresh or too "fishy". When I picked up my to go order today, I walked in and there was no host. I just walked to the bar and waited for someone to come. I believe there was only one lady running the whole restaurant besides the sushi chefs. She was assisting customers picking up or placing to go orders, putting in orders from Waitr app, answering phone to go's, AND waiting tables. I didn't see any other servers or workers in the restaurant besides her. I assume she was waiting tables too because customers approached her saying they were ready to pay. I'm not sure why there wasn't more workers, but that tells me service may have gone downhill. I placed my order and waited a good bit to go and pick it up, but when I got there it wasn't ready yet. Process took a little over an hour. Overall, it's a decent sushi spot. If you're someone that likes basic rolls, this would get the job done for you. If you're looking for good quality fish and specialty items/rolls, there's definitely better options out there. read more

Backstory: Me and my girl don't drink alcohol on weekdays, it's a Sunday night and we figured we'd find a sushi spot that also serves alcohol. Found Tennou, looked at the menu and figured great, they're not too far and have sushi and drinks. There's even a whole section on the menu with wines, sake, cocktails, etc. Come to find out they don't have any of it. The service was fine, sushi was great, but I feel so mislead seeing a whole drink menu(even Yelp says they have a "Full Bar"), yet they don't serve any drinks. TL;DR: Even though everything else says otherwise, they don't serve alcoholic beverages here but the food is great. read more

Tennou is a great place to get your sushi fix. The west bank has several great lunch spots, but I was in the mood for something different. A friend recommended Tennou which turned into a great meal. The restaurant has a casual vibe with booths along the wall and tables in the center. The ambiance may have been casual, but the food was very good. We started with an order of salmon sashimi. It was excellent. The salmon was obviously fresh and of very high quality with no obvious "fishy" taste. I have never had salmon sashimi before today, but it may be my new favorite. We also ordered the dynamite, philly and rainbow rolls. All were fresh, well constructed and tasted great. Service was also very good. We were never left wanting refills, but the server also didn't hover and try and eavesdrop on our conversation. I highly recommend Tennou for lunch. read more

I places a Tennou Roll special. The sushi was tasty and fresh. There is a bar on the side to purchase Sake and other liquors. Was quite nice to go back to Tennou after being in town for work. Tennou was the go-to sushi place for years , well before the tons of others popped up in the area. When I used to work on manhattan I think I blew the better part of my paychecks here. Consistency has always been their strongest suit. The same rolls I ordered 10 years ago are still prepared and taste the exact same. If any critique is there hasnt been much innovation. Not many if at all menu items that are new and honestly, like the place has been completely omitted by time. The Tennou 1 roll is easily top 3 favorite rolls ever, yes, its that damn good. Total was around $85 The crunchy toppings that they put on top and inside the rolls tasted stale. I also ordered fried calamari from the appetizer which looked like it was either doubled fried from the day before. It was not appetizing and also fishy and came with a weird sauce. I've had better sushi else where. Very disappointing on the quality. I remember coming here years ago and loved it but this must be the reason why we stop coming here. I would give this place a 7/10 and my girlfriend gives it a 7.4/10 (she claims to be nicer than me). Adequately priced sushi we had the Metairie roll, the Spider Roll, the Heart Attack Roll, and the Yellow Tail and Scallion Roll. My personal favorite was the yellow tail roll, fish seemed fresh and had the right combo of everything in it. Did not like being charged extra for eel sauce. We also had the noodle salad (would not recommend), but we have not had noodle salad at other places. Waitress was very attentive and the service was great, we were seated upon entry immediately. My Tennou review is definitely due for an update. First of all, they are doing a lot to fix the place up and it is looking really nice these days. I now have a few "usuals" whenever I go. I always get the noodle.salad. Granted I haven't been to every sushi place in NOLA, but besides Hana or Mikimoto, this is one of the few places that I have found that has noodle salad. Please correct me if I'm wrong, because I love the stuff! You get a huge order for $3.50 and it's so good. Another fave is the salmon sashimi, which you get 7 pieces of and is still cut really thick. The Philly roll and the tuna rolls are awesome and every once in a while I'll treat myself to the salmon roe or the rainbow roll. The food is always super fresh and the service is fast and friendly. They are always adding different special rolls, so be sure to ask about them. read more

Tennou is one of the original sushi restaurants on the westbank, before Fuji Hana and Daiwa. I haven't been to this place in yearssss. Blame it on Mikimotos. Tennou added the hibachi grill. I can make my own fried rice at home. Good for family I guess and $11 lunch for rice and noodle dishes. I went here for dinner and it was really good! Beef Teriyaki- really tender and juicy. I wish the teriyaki sauce was left on the beef caramelized instead of coming in a bowl separately. Comes with salad with ginger dressing and soup. ( I could careless for the sides and forgot to ask to substitute) Baked Salmon- this use to come with 2 balls for $8+ but now it's just 1 for $5.50. Bummer. This is snowcrab meat mixed in Japanese mayo and then formed into a ball. Salmon use to be wrapped around the ball but the one I got was just a slice of salmon on top of the ball. Poboy Roll- wrapped with soy paper and stuffed with soft shell crab, crawfish, shrimp tempura, and lettuce and drizzled with spicy mayo + eel sauce. Really tasty! Each bite had crawfish and I'm a crawfish lover! Lizard Roll- snowcrab stick, shrimp tempura with cream cheese. Yummy I want to come back here for the happy hour sushi! read more

Tennou is probably the best sushi joint in the Westbank. The food here is fantastic compared to all the other sushi joints in the Westbank! My favorite appetizers: -Baked Salmon. It's perfect. Just the way I like it. It always has the right amount of eel sauce. -Beek Tataki. I love the onions they top it with. Other sushi places don't always give onions. -Hamachi Kama. -Green Mussels are good. My favorite rolls are: -Hawaiian Roll -Tennou Roll -Crunchy roll with cream cheese added. My favorite sushi joint on the westbank. I ALWAYS get the salmon sashimi. I love the big, cold chunks of salmon they give. It's not super thin and they really don't skimp on the portions. It's always so fresh and tastyyyyy! My boyfriend LOVES the sexiest man roll. He said it's one of his favorite sushi rolls EVER. I used to always get the Westbank roll. Lately, we've been ordering the calamari as an appetizer. It has a barbecue like sauce as a dipper. I like it because the squid pieces are large and tentacles are large (my favorite part). Large and super tender, not chewy at all! My son LOVES the tennou popper roll. It's served as an appetizer but he eats it as his entree. We always order 2 of these. It's so good! And I don't even like cream cheese in my sushi rolls... They always are steady with atleast couple tables free and we always get seated right away or in a couple of minutes. Tennou sushi is delicious to me. I've ate at (and worked for) multiple sushi restaurants and this is my favorite on the Westbank, if not one in the city. Their yelp picture of delicious salmon sashimi is what caught my eye. Their rolls and sashimi aren't skimping on size. Some restaurants are able to cut sushi rolls into 6 because they're tiny. Not Tennou. 2 small rolls could barely fit into a large Togo box. Everything tastes fresh. The scallop roll was pretty flavorless but all the other rolls I've ordered were the bomb. Something about their sushi rice just tastes... Better. Service is good. Price is fairly inexpensive especially considering the size of the rolls. Lunch specials are the way to go the get the most for your money! Tennou keeps it simple and I like that. Not sure why they have negative reviews because I love their food. read more
