I used to eat there regularly but one day I went in and waited at the register to order, the lady at the front was taking a phone order. As I was waiting, there is a small window next to the door that they use to walk in the kitchen. I happen to look through the window and saw a man putting something on their cooking surface that had tails on it. I would give this 10 stars if possible! I thought I reviewed this gem but it somehow escaped me despite ordering takeout like at least five times now. I have a close friend who lives just a short drive away and when I'm in town we get takeout from here. I sort of demand it! They have various African (Senegalese, I believe) and Jamaican dishes. I've only ordered Jerk Chicken and Curry Goat off the Jamaican menu but they are phenomenal. Best Jerk Chicken I've ever had! The large gives you a 1/2 chicken it seems with giant sides of rice & beans as well as a cooked down tender cabbage side. Your to-go styrofoam box feels like the weight of a heavy brick or cinder block because of how much food they give you! The chicken has so much of that nutmeg/clove/thyme flavor and it's spicy. Always moist. The sides are great and they have a habanero paste/sauce you can grab as well. Just ask. The large is $11 or $12 which is a steal. The Curry Goat comes in I believe a quart-sized plastic container with an additional styrofoam box housing the rice, a colorful light slaw, and awesome plantains. Firmer and not mushy plantains which I like. They give you plenty of meaty bone-in pieces of goat as well. Super clean flavor, tender, and the curry is dynamite! I recently discovered this restaurant. They have Dine-in and carry-out available. They have a wide variety of menu items from authentic West African food to Jamaican food. The staff was friendly and welcoming I was able to see myself where I was where I wanted to sit. The employee brought over the menus. It took awhile for her to come back since she was the same person doing orders. I ordered the Jamaican jerk chicken with cabbage and I also got the ginger juice which was one of many different uses to select from. When the food came out it was a large portion. My dish had a half chicken As well as rice and cabbage and was really a portion for two meals. The food was really spicy and tasty. The rice was cooked well and the Cabbage was season really well. I had them bring some additional jerk sauce to pour over my rice which really brought out the flavor. Overall I enjoyed this experience. The staff was friendly, which you know customer service is important to me. The food portion was great. The taste of the food was really good and flavorful which is something that I enjoy as well. I'm not sure what's going wrong here, but this is likely my last attempt at giving this place a shot. I ordered Egusi and Sakha-Sakha. The Egusi tasted a bit fishy and off, and had a borderline inedible chunk of organ meat that turned me off of the whole order. I'm down for offal, but not when it's awful. The Sakha-Sakha was better??? I guess? This is certainly not the quality I'd experienced in prior years from Teranga. It still had that fishiness to it, and the meat was tough, as if dried or frozen. There were tiny bits of bone in multiple pieces of meat that had me concerned about chipping a tooth (and not the big chunks I come to expect of the cuisine, these were literally inside small pieces of meat). I got a refund from doordash that has me feeling a bit better, but I'm honestly worried about food posioning. read more

If there was ever a Cincinnati hidden gems list, this restaurant would be listed number 1. I never feel like any trip to Cincy is complete without stopping by this restaurant at least once during my stay. They never fail to leave me satisfied and wanting more! I got the beef brochette, curry chicken, and white rice and it still amazes me how each dish is scrumptiously seasoned. My beef brochette was a little too burnt for my liking, but its seasoning made up for it entirely. The seasoning alone at this restaurant is so good that you wouldn't even mind if all you had was a plate of onions hahaha. I can definitely tell that they really do put their hearts into their cooking, because I've been in love with this restaurant from the moment I took my first bite. Can't wait to try the dibi next time I go there! read more

I just tried this place after hearing about it from some friends. Amazing!!! The portions are large, and the food is amazing. Very flavorful, without being overly spicy. I have tried the jerk wings, chicken brochettes, the fried tilapia and the lamb. I have a big appetite and still had about half my meal to take home. Service is quick, both take out and sit down. The restaurant is small, but has adequate seating. The furnishings are nice, new and clean. Would definitely recommend! read more

Not much to add for a place with over a hundred reviews. Since moving back from the West Coast I've been to pretty much everyplace there is/was pre-COVID for African/Caribbean in Cincinnati, including a couple that have sadly closed down (even that one place in the old Taco Bell in Sharonville, and this was before COVID). And I don't normally end up in Wyoming unless it's Friends of the Public Library, Half Day Cafe, or the Produce Market and Beer Repository on Vine. But I was out there for a couple stops near dinner, and got two very extensive dinners selections, one for today and one later in the week. This food is truly authentic, though really who isn't, other than some might quibble with that one place in the new-construction off-campus low-rise with Indian on one side of the menu and African on the other? But sure otherwise this is both authentic and superb, such that I can't wait until it's time to go rummage through more castoff library DVDs, and pick up a couple different entrees, albeit with more sides as you only get one included offering per dinner. read more

Great food! My favorite is the Maffe (which is peanut butter soup with potatoes, carrots and lamb) and the oxtails.

Okay 5 Stars for Décor. The best I've seen in the city (as far as African restaurants go). Visually stimulating, colorful and spacious. I felt super comfy here and actually paid the $2 fee to sit down and eat in. I didn't leave a tip because of the fee but I think it worked out cheaper. The meal gets 3-4 stars. It was not the best in the city but a close second. The meals were perfectly executed and lived up to all of the hype I've heard and read about this place. The cashier doubled as the server and she was SO nice! You could tell she was one of those people that rarely have a bad day because there was this internal happiness thing going on. It really contributed positively to my overall experience and I plan to come back to check some other menu items out. I highly recommend this place. Especially the different types of drinks.... A diamond that needs more exposure! If you're curious about West African cuisine, specifically, Senegalese food you should definitely check out Teranga Restaurant. The owner is a very nice gentleman and everybody who works there makes it such a nice & friendly atmosphere. Super quick service and an authentic Senegalese ambiance that makes you feel like you just stepped into the city of Dakar. Finding restaurants that is not the typical everyday American cuisine is not the simplest thing to do in Cincinnati but this spot will have you coming back for more again and again. From a wide range of West African delicacies to even food from the Caribbean, this place just has it all. It's a shame more people don't know about Teranga, it should be the talk of Cincy. I would recommend the Dibi (lamb) with brown rice plus the fried plantain, trust me your life will forever be changed. The food is so succulent and filling. For your drink, I highly suggest the Bissap made from the Hibiscus flower, you won't realize how quickly you finish it. One word to describe Teranga; addictive. read more

My friend from Kenya, is always talking about this restaurant. She tells me how the food here reminds her of back home. How the taste is authentic. How it is in a shady part of the town, in a strip mall.But sometimes to taste the original, you need to make a pilgrimage. And pilgrimages are tough, most of the time. (I know, we have a temple back in India where you have to trek through the forest one whole day to reach) Anyways, since my friend told me the ambiance is not much and you wont want to sit down and eat here, I decided for to-go. I called them on a Saturday around 12. Now, the menu is a little complicated with some dishes available only one some days and some times. My manager had eaten here some days back and he was since then raving about this stuffed leg of lamb, but it was only available in the evening. So we decided to go for lamb with rice and fish with rice(Thiebou Djeun). We got to the restaurant around 1 and sure there is a big crowd waiting for their order. Seems like to-go is what regular patrons also prefer. There was a lot of happy chatter among the guys and between patrons and the staff. The guy at the counter got our order, and described the dishes to us. Then he opened the containers to show and the smell hits me...My mouth was already watering. The fish and lamb, both had different kind of rices. Lamb had a brown rice, and Fish had a red rice. Next time, i would go for brown rice, which was super-delicious. The lamb was so soft and juicy, it was dripping of the bone.Fish fry reminded me of the fish fry from India in many ways. Our fish fry is also well-done. The spices, the flavor.. We were not very hungry when we started, but we finished more than we thought we would eat. Very satisfying meal, will come again! read more

Went for lunch the other day. I gave it 3 stars, but the ratings vary significantly based on the topic, so here goes. Appearance - 5 stars. I have been there before it was remodeled. New look is fantastic and use of big screens for the menu is great Menu - 4 stars. Not being that familiar with this food it is a little overwhelming to decide what to order Jerk Chicken - 3+ stars. Chicken itself was very good. I got the big portion, which is 1/2 chicken. Seems like a small chicken Sides - 4 stars. Comes with rice and cabbage. This was really good Value - 1 star. Very disappointed, let me explain. $10 for large portion seemed a little high, but okay. Jerk chicken comes with rice and peas. I am not a fan of peas, so asked if they are in the rice or separate, they are in the rice. However, man said they have other plain rice, which I could get instead. Got the brown rice, it was good. Now here is where I was disappointed. Additional charge of $1 for "substitution". Really -- switching rice choice. Then there is a $2 charge to eat it there. Wait a minute, you have table and chairs and you then charge for me to eat there. By the time I was done, including a soda, this was almost a $16 lunch. With all that said, I do plan to go back and try some other foods, but I will know to get carry out and not to change anything. read more

Wow! This place was really good. I didn't have very high expectations because I don't eat African food very often, so I don't often know what to expect. I'd rather have low expectations and be blown away than have high expectations and be disappointed, but I digress. I ordered the chicken with white rice. The chicken was fantastic! Very well seasoned, tender, juicy, and cooked. The rice was great, and it even had some really good sautéed onions and half an egg. All in all, this restaurant was great. I didn't eat in, so I can't comment on the atmosphere, but from the brief time I was in there, I can say it's a clean place with bright, natural light and welcoming ambience. I went back to Teranga and ate inside. There is a $2.00 service charge for eating in, so be aware of that. The food was still super delicious and fresh. I went in with my friends after an intense climbing session at RockQuest, super hungry, and ended up tentatively at Teranga. Although the place is still being built out, it's a fully functional restaurant offering both takeout options and dine in options. The interior is very basic. A few tables and chairs allow for seating, and there's functional restrooms. The food is fantastic! I was hungry so I ambitiously ordered the grilled lamb , and a whole fish, while my gf ordered another full grilled fish. The total amount of food could have easily fed three people! ! And they were absolutely yummy. Reminded me of traditional cooking back home in India! This place rocks for a few simple reasons - quality food, affordable prices and a warm welcoming jovial atmosphere. The Yelpers most definitely have this place down. I again used Yelp to roll the dice and find a new place to eat and Teranga popped up as a nearby option. Teranga looks like an everyday cafe decorated with a West African motif. The plaza it's in seems a little sketchy, but as echoed by others, don't let that turn you away. Really I think it's just Cincinnati's Little Senegal, as the name Teranga is applied not just to the restaurant, but also to several other businesses within the same plaza. Takeout is the popular option. I was the only customer that actually sat down for my meal and the waitstaff seemed a little surprised at my choice. Lunch was six bucks and I still have leftovers now three days later, so it's definitely a good deal. Menu items are limited, which I really enjoyed. The limitations made it easy for me to decide, sort of the opposite of a Panera, which has that painfully large and intimidating menu. My options for lunch at Teranga were lamb or fish. I got the lamb which was served on a heaping bed of couscous along with onions. As mentioned by others, the onions are a bit tangy. This can be a surprise if you're not from Senegal. No worries though, if the taste is a bit to strong for you, it can be mitigated by mixing the onions with the couscous. The lamb was tender and delicious. The people here are wonderfully friendly and inviting. I imagine I'll be back soon. read more

During my short stay here in Cincy, I absolutely fell in love with Senegalese food. As I tasted almost about every dish you can find on their menu, I can guarantee you that you they can never go wrong with any of their offerings. From the juiciness of the dibi ( grilled lamb) to the fall off the bone slow cooked maffe(also lamb with the peanut butter sauce.Not to mention the flaky salty goodness offataya,a savory pastry filled with either fish or beef.Teranga needs to be on everyone's must try list especially for lamb lovers. I wish I could give this place a 4 star just for the fact I could order a grilled WHOLE fish in the middle of the day. This lunch was the bomb. The fish I had was on the dinner menu, but the woman at the register said I could order dinner around lunch time. I had the whole grilled fish with a side of salad and Attieke, which is cassava pulp that looks a lot like couscous. Be careful with the Attieke sauce, it is SUPER spicy. The fish was of course amazing. They grill it whole, and by whole I mean they leave the head, fins, and most importantly the belly on. It is lightly seasoned with a side of seasoned caramelized onions. I loved the fish. The best parts of course were the fatty pieces at the belly, neck, and just behind the head. I would come back just for this. But the Attieke was not great. It was clumpy and tasted like very dry couscous. It was hard to eat. I also had a ginger root drink they make in store. This sounded great until I had a sip and it was so gingery it burned my throat after consecutive sips. They may have steeped the root for a lot longer than I would be comfortable with. They have several other juices they make there, but of course I had no room for that. The place is kind of out of the way from anything that I would be traveling to, but it was a good stop none-the-less. It was a great chance to try some African food. read more

This was my first time ordering from Teranga (DoorDash suggested it as a new place to try), and I was not disappointed. The Dibi Lamb is grilled (with bones) and comes with a large helping of seasoned onions - I don't know what spices are used, but there's a mustard-like flavor to them and they make a good counterpoint to the lamb. The Jerk Chicken has a nice amount of spice and smokiness to it, but it doesn't set your tongue on fire. I had the rice and beans and some excellent cabbage, and the plantains make for a not-too-sweet end to the meal. The large portions made for a nice lunch the next day. Here are my Teranga favorites: Maffe: it's a rich and tomato-based peanut butter sauce with lamb and vegetables over white rice. This is my favorite food. Period. Fataya: think of it as an empanada or sambusa with a West African twist. Simple, but delicious! Dibbi: portions of grilled lamb. Your stomach will thank you later. Trust me.
