Rarely do I visit a restaurant where the food looks exactly like the picture before you even take a…read morebite and then tastes even better than it looks. Ekiben did that. I had been here once before, before moving to the area, and thought it was great then. This time? Extraordinary. I came in about an hour before closing, and anyone who eats out knows food can sometimes feel different that close to closing time. Not here. Everything tasted fresh, flavorful, and just as good as if I had walked in at peak dinner time. On top of that, I had an issue with my online order/payment. It looked like the charge was processing through my account, but they had no record of the order. Instead of making me feel like a problem, the person helping me was patient, kind, and genuinely tried to figure it out. I felt treated like a hungry customer who needed help not like someone trying to get over. The food looked good, tasted amazing, and the people were helpful, welcoming, and kind even near closing. The space was welcoming as well. The corner store ..... come on in. Come on in. Come on in. Top-notch all around

I considered ordering online, but walked up. Given the suffocating heat on the day and the fact…read morethat this tiny shop had a line out the door, the online order would have been the right choice. So I just walked away and ordered online, which was a struggle due to the app not taking the order for a bit, but eventually I got through. It was ready quickly enough. Ekiben, classically a sandwich spot, has broken into the noodle business. I sampled their knife cut noodles, which have a wonderfully springy texture and fullness about them. They are available with tofu. This was a small box and had too many cucumbers for my liking. In substance, however, the flavor bomb you expect from Ekiben is still there, from a chili crisp that will elevate your heart rate to a delightful mix of aromatic greens and crunchy onions on top. Ordering a Thai tea yielded a small beverage which was on the sweeter side. I'd probably order something different next time, but for those that haven't tried the knife cut style noodles, I'm glad this neighborhood in Baltimore now has an Ekiben.

There were times I want to tell him he was doing such a good job since my party was big and that's a lot of different people, paces and energy to manage. Nonetheless everything came out timely. The appetizers, the food, and we took desert to go. We ordered a plethora of food, from Bang Bang Shrimp to Alaskan Rolls and hibachi to noodles. We had it all and I can't wait to go back.

We're not too hungry but hungry enough for some app and a roll. We're decided on crab Rangoon, calamari, tuna tataki and titanic roll. Everything was great, we finished it all. Love the tuna, presented beautifully on a lettuce sprinkled with green onions and black sesame. The calamari, while it's not the breaded crispy, its crispy and stir fried with red green pepper and red onions. Loved this too. Crab Rangoon, it's good but not a fan of the dipping sauce that came with it. It's overly sweet and thick in the consistency... this one could definitely be improved. We ended up eating it with the sauce that came with the calamari. Now onto the titanic, nothing but good thing. Fresh and love give it has a black caviar on top. Last but not least, we had to finish with mango sticky rice. The rice came out so warm which was a very nice touch. Ate every bits of it. Service was great attentive and dining area is clean and pretty. There's a seating area on the side where you basically sit in the floor. Would love to come back and experience that another time.

First thing's first: I'm not a fan of Korean BBQ per se. I don't see the logic of going to a…read morerestaurant to pay for the privilege of cooking. However, sometimes you gotta get out. Kanpai is in a prime place along Rockville Pike, but depending on when you go you may find easy parking. (If you're not bothered about where to park, ignore what I just said.) Out front there's something that looks like a tuk-tuk or rickshaw. Tbh, don't know if it's theirs or the business next door. The restaurant itself is clean and elegant. Also, not as loud as some Korean BBQs (thinking of KPOT off of Randolph Rd), which is important if you don't like being overwhelmed by everyone else's noise. That is one big '+' in Kanpai's favor. The waiter was cool and very helpful. Because of him I now know what the thin meat slices are meant for (which is for the soup), before then I had no clue. The food itself is good. Like, why wouldn't it be? I actually prefer the shabu-shabu (soup), makes me wish I knew how to do that myself so I wouldn't have to go out as much. Yes, the grill meats were great, as was the kimchi. These places are not cheap, but it was enjoyable while I was there. If you're not in a rush you can go a few doors down afterward to an import store selling everything from K-chips to puzzle-kits. So I would say...take your time. But don't warm your seats for more than 90 minutes, as Korean BBQs tend to kick people out (nicely, nicely) if one overstays. P.S. I'm sure they have some great drinks there, but even if I wanted to I couldn't loiter. That's what Bethesda is for. (Or at least how it used to be.)
