Chow Mein Charlie is a local mom and pop Chinese takeout restaurant. My friend, Jeffery recommended the chicken and broccoli. I got it medium level spicy with an order of fried rice. It was so good, the veggies were fresh and the sauce was very tasty. They don't give you a ton of meat. However, the food is simple and fresh. The fried rice was amazing, very simple finished with onions and eggs. Prices are still reasonable even though the went up due to inflation. read more

This is a classic hole in the wall Chinese takeout place. The chicken broccoli was mediocre. The chicken was way too soft, but the broccoli was good. The fried rice it came with didn't have enough egg, or things other than just rice. And the rice really did not stay well in the fridge at all. I love this mom 'n pop Chinese place. Here's what you can expect: tasty, homemade, Western-style Chinese food at decent prices, with great service. If you want extra fried food, or something sticky and too fatty, that sticks to your ribs, this isn't the Chinese for you. The chicken is fresh. The veggies are fresh. But done with Chinese (again, for the Western palette) preparations. Go in with the exact expectations I said, and you'll be happy. My first time here and the food didnt impress me. The shrimp egg rolls had a tiny sliver of a shrimp in each one, I guess it was to justify calling it a shrimp egg roll. The shrimp toast had no shrimp at all, just some type of seafood paste. The egg drop soup was bland. Oh! And the menu has a 15% markup due to the cost of supplies. ???? I will not be back. read more

I don't know how they stay in business. Nice people, but the food is schlock from way back. I ordered sweet and sour pork, an easy dish, but the result was three quarters batter enclosing little bits of tough pork. Sichuan green beans were old beans without much flavor sprinkled with some hot sauce. This is as out of date as the name. read more

Probably won't go back after first try-Asked for spicy hot hot hunan and it was mild and sweet. Scallops were not real (tasted like imitation crabmeat) and shrimp were small. If nothing else, Chow Mein Charlie is definitely unique. I've never had Chinese takeout like theirs before, and I can see why some people would be absolutely floored by it. For starters, it's probably the healthiest Chinese takeout you'll ever find. They use all fresh ingredients, make all of their sauces in-house, and when you order something like sesame chicken, you'll get real chunks of chicken breast not coated in anything, stir-fried in the wok with the sauce and veggies. Sounds great right? Sort of. I've ordered two different chicken dishes from here, and they both tasted incredibly similar. It almost makes me think they have a base sauce that they start with, and then tweak it ever so slightly depending on the dish. I like having a wide range of flavors to choose from, and based on my two visits, you don't get that here. I can see myself trying them one last time and ordering something completely and utterly different that has no business tasting like the first two things I tried. That dish will either mean I keep trying, or never come back. I can see how some folks would do cartwheels over this place, but I'm not one of them. You do owe it to yourself to find out for yourself though. It's not like any Chinese takeout I've ever had, and it could end up being your new favorite. read more

This is probably one of the healthiest home cooked version of Chinese takeout ever. My husband and I usually spend on Sundays cleaning and then pick up takeout so that we don't have to clean one more pot/dish/chopstick. Since this place is right by where we live, we decided to try it out. We were greeted by a very friendly woman who I think is the owner. She took our order and asked us to come back in 15 minutes. This is a take out Chinese food place ONLY. Prices were reasonable- I ordered the seafood combo and my husband ordered the Hunan platter for about $35. We ordered brown rice for $1.50 EXACTLY 15 minutes later, we returned and food was ready. Once we got home, we opened it to find a variety of piping hot fresh vegetables and meats! My mother in law ( my husband is Chinese and from San Francisco) couldn't have made it any better! They DONT skimp out on using quality ingredients. Brown rice was also well done and moist- not the usual dry pebbles that I get at other places (too many to name in one review). IF You are craving the greasy, salty and overpoweringly sweet Chinese takeout versions that are often served at malls- this is NOT the place for you- No shame in it, there is a time and place for that version. This place knows how to cater to the taste and expectations of the Roland Park residents. No wonder it has been in business this long. We are glad to find this place and will be ordering from it on a regular basis. read more

The best Chinese food in town! Wonderful, kind owners. My family and I have enjoyed every dish we have tried. The sesame cashew chicken is my favorite. I have not found another place that has such big pieces of white meat chicken in the dish. Also, one can request dishes as "low heat" "medium heat" or "hot" or whatever if you like dishes more or less spicy. Absolutely horrible. Ordered bbq ribs. You would think they would have bbq sauce on. No they were just deep fried not well - order of 4 1 was crispy 2nd was semi raw and I did not go any further. Chow Mein Charlie is definitely my new favorite place. The food was soo fresh and tasty I ordered the shrimp lo mein, and general tso chicken. The Shrimp Lo mein had reasonal sized shrimp and great flavor, what I liked most was all the veggies that it was packed with. The General TSO chicken was amazing, there was actual white chicken breast used. You could cut into the chicken and see how white and juicy it was, lean cuts of chicken. Sorry folks, but a poor showing for chinese food. The egg roll was the the doughest version of an egg roll I have ever had. There was more dough than filling. Two bites and that is all it was worth eating. The chicken and broccoli either used pre-cooked old chicken or chicken so over cooked it was rubbery and tasteless. The broccoli was also over cooked so we will assume they just stir fried the crap out of it. The shrimp with hot garlic sauce was the best of the three as the shrimp (all four of them) were only slightly overcooked. However the veggies were severely overcooked and with only the slightest of garlic taste and all the 'hot' coming from a touch of red pepper flakes. The white rice was fine. I tried three things as I am looking for a place to make our staple. I will have to pass on this local place and try another. read more

The brown sauce was thin with no flavoring and the shrimp were overlooked. Even doused in soy sauce the meal was bland. I have had lunch from Chow Mein Charlie at least 150 times. Rarely is it anything but very enjoyable and on rare occasion it just misses being spicy and flavorful enough and thus occasionally would be a 4 star. The quality of the beef they use is better than almost every other Chinese take-out that I have had. read more

Last time I checked, Mongolian beef was made with onions and peppers, not mushrooms bamboo, and bok choy in a thin beef broth. Guy on the phone said "that's Mongolian beef." Not going back sadly. read more

I love this place. My girlfriend and I just moved to baltimore and we were looking for good chinese, we tried tons and most of them really sucked. We were really happy when we finally found this place, we've gotten two dishes so far: Sweet and Sour Chicken and General Tzo's Chicken, both of them really good. The chicken is all white meat and great quality, lightly breaded and fried without excess oil, it's really fantastic! The egg-drop soup, the fried rice and the egg rolls are also awesome. This is the best chinese food I have had in Baltimore in a long time, and I have lived here for nearly 15 years. The dishes I have tried are Beef with Brocolli, Shrimp Fried Rice, Sweet and Sour Chicken, and General Tso's Chicken - all of which were either good or great and I recommend each of them. The owners/workers are very friendly and nice. The one thing I will say that could be improved are the portion sizes and prices. You will most likely spend either the same or a little more here as you would at another Chinese place, but you may not get as much food as the other places. I've been going to Chow Mein Charlie for at least 4 years. It's definitely a change of pace from the typical Chinese restaurants in that it's not sugary syrup (thank goodness!). The vegetables are ALWAYS fresh. The food is flavourful. And the owners are very nice. I can't recommend this place enough. My favourite is the Chicken in Garlic Sauce (extra spicy, no mushrooms).
