After getting the soccer mom scare at the stupid "Kid Genius" on Congress, I miss this store greatly, and bummed it couldn't just branch out instead of moving altogether. The environment was right and there was everything to match me and my family's sentiments, ponies for my (37 year old) sister, dolls and books for mom, legos and gag toys for me and dad. The staff there (and at the new location) are fun and able to zone out the grating toy noise, and whatever they're on, I'd love some. A complete store, and appreciate the new location now that I'm north. read more

Terra Toys! Another great shop in Austin's local Toy scene! They've got a really interesting selection and they're one of the largest in terms of square footage, but even though I do like them I think if I'm comparing them with all the other fun places in town, they get a bit bumped down for a few small things. The Pros: When compared to Toy Joy, Terra Toys really is more aimed at a younger audience, and not so much the grown up 'kid at heart'. While you can find a selection of things to decorate your desk at work, the grand majority is meant to be played with by a youngling. I definitely consider this a pro though as it's let them really focus on getting some awesome stuff for kids, especially things from years back like wooden cork pop-guns and lovingly crafted doll houses. They have a great selection of plush animals and really great puppets (expensive yes, but high quality!). They also have the biggest selection of Playmobil figures, a line that hasn't been carried in most places for years and that I used to love as a kid. The Cons: We spent an hour or so in there but the place didn't really scream fun. It's hard to nail it down as to why though. The customer service was a little lacking, they were friendly when we came in but didn't seem to be enjoying being surrounded by toys much, it could have just been a bad day for them though so I don't know! but the overall personality of the store isn't super colorful or cheery, the creepy dolls that come with the intricate doll house section and vintage tin toys give the place a bit of an old museum vibe which made me hesitant to play with stuff as much. Since it's also an open layout with shelving units it kind of felt like we were in a warehouse too. I know this is a strange thing to pick up on, but it didn't really feel like I was exploring a magic wonderland! Overall only 3 stars seems harsh, even as I post this. The place is great, and the young kid selection can't be beat on the local toy store circuit, but the old place could use a bit of a jump start in the fun department! At least for a toy enthusiast of this age! read more

I came here several years ago on my first date with my husband and it was such a treasure to take our son here. He was immediately drawn to the Brio set - they already had a few trains out to play with and he held on to the blue train all night! We also ventured to the fish tank, stuffed animals, kites, balloons, bouncy balls- they have it all. As an extra plus for parents with tots who are still in diapers- their bathroom is equipped with diapers of multiple sizes in case an accident happens and you are unprepared (maybe that's just me). Thank you Terra Toys for being a magical escape for children and adults alike! read more

Joy and exuberance - the way a toy store ought to be. My two year old stop dead in his tracks as we entered the store in order to best admire the overwhelming toy-shop-ness of it all. It took as an hour to admire all of the toys at his eye-level so large was the collection and so interesting and previously unseen so many of the toys were. Two weeks until Christmas and the toy store was in commotion. Employees were everywhere on hand to answer questions and make recommendations. The employee who stuck closer to the puppet and plush section was an excellent puppeteer and could readily answer questions like, "My daughter likes lions. Which are the best lions?" It seemed two employees were on constant "straighten up" duty as they wandered the shop collecting toys that had been dragged across the store by admiring toddlers and then forgotten when a new and even more magical toy was discovered (ehem, sorry). Here you can also find a large variety of stocking and easter basket stuffers: wind-up toys, tops, kazoos, figurines, etc. In fact, this would be my first stop in Austin for that category. All that said, we loved the visit here and enjoyed ourselves very much. We'll be back again. Yet at the same time, I'm glad it's the cozy, little Lions and Tigers and Toys down by me. Terra Toys has a larger and broader selection suitable to the entire family, a much more joyful atmosphere, and, wow, can we just talk about variety and selection again? However, LTT is simply easier to shop with with a toddler for every reason opposite that I appreciate Terra: a smaller selection, a more compact, quieter store. Funny, that. I think it's just the age though. It's hard to shop with a 2 year old in a toy wonderland like Terra. read more

I wanted to buy everything in this store and I'm not even a kid or have a child. If I did I'd be in trouble. I managed to leave with only a book of Margaret Mead and a countries of the world game. It's educational too, not just toys! My friend and I really got a kick out of their germ "stuffies" could be a really neat way for all ages to learn about pathogens. I went into Terra Toys today for the first time to do Christmas shopping for 3 little nieces. Holy shit, this toy store is awesome! The selection they have is incredible. Lots of great learning toys, stuffed animals, puzzles, literally anything you could think of that a child would love, they have. They even have dollhouse furniture and paper dolls! ...Just me then? OK. They also have a wonderful selection of books on a ton of subjects, and for many different ages. But the best part? They sell Harry Potter wands. Real, carved, wooden magic wands. I cannot wait to have a child who will appreciate having a Harry Potter wand. Seriously, I could live in this store. Ok, well now that I've sufficiently creeped out the Yelp user base, I will end this review by saying that if you go to Toys R Us or any other chain store to buy toys for the little ones in your life you are a bad parent and/or guardian (unless you're not; but I highly recommend you go to Terra Toys first). read more

Our kids love Playmobil and this is THE place to go in Austin to fill that need. By far, the largest selection of Playmobil sets, extra pieces, new and recently retired as well as a nice window display with 3 lines (harbor, princess castle and future planet) set up. Prices do seem to be marked up a few bucks more than you would find at Amazon or Playmobil.com but you do satisfy the need quicker. Beyond Playmobil, they have a good variety of other toys, all more along the lines of educational or non-big box brands. So no Barbie or Star Wars but lots of other great stuff. read more

We've been going to Terra Toys a couple weeks before Christmas for four years now, so that our kids can buy each other presents. It's a family tradition, and it's always wonderful. Specifically, though, I'd just like to shout out to Terra Toys for going the extra mile, every time we come in. My daughter received some extremely tiny dice from her fairies, and noticed them at a later date in the checkout line at Terra Toys. She mentioned that they were the same ones her fairies gave her, and without missing a beat, the employee checking us out told her that they work directly with fairies on some of their items. Way to keep the mystery alive! Seriously awesome, and just the kind of thing we come here for. read more

This place is so fun! My three year old and I recently stopped by for funsies. They have so much to see for kids, and kids at heart. I picked up a toy for myself, my daughter and my Doctor Who loving boyfriend (they have sonic screwdrivers, but he's such a nerd he already had them all!) this weekend. I love the painted stairs, as random as that is. In addition to the aforementioned Doctor Who miscellany, they have Hello Kitty, TRAIN TOYS GALORE, Curious George, books and a fun little reading area, stuffed animals, little wind-up spaceships, and everything you could possibly be looking for. There was a "jellyfish aquarium" I had to pry myself away from, that may be a future present to myself. We stopped in here this past weekend for on our way to a kid's b-day party. All the reviews don't lie, this place is awesome! I was a bit overwhelmed with all the toys to choose from and my little girl had a great time. She would run from place to place dragging everything out in about as much time as it would take for me to clean up the previous distraction. We were actually late to the party because I kept playing with all the displays. This place is so much fun. We found some great toys for the birthday girl and got something for ourselves too. Love this toy store, and it looks like they just expanded. They have all the usual fancy toy story stuff (Playmobil, Brio, plastic animals and knights, doll house items, etc. plus a lot of crazy stuff you can't even imagine. Lots of fun, silly, relatively cheap toys that nobody will expect to get as a gift. They also have a selection of goofy and unusual candy. A fun place to take a kid, until you have to drag him out screaming because he doesn't want to leave. Sucks that Zinger Hardware is moving, which was a couple of shops down. This place is great to just come and browse for anyone who is a kid at heart. They have a cute coffee bar on the back/right side of the shop, a checkers/chess playing area and of course piles and piles of toys. I hardly ever go in there looking for something in particular but I almost always find something. One of my favorite areas is the selection of bouncy balls because simplicity speaks volumes. I've spent an embarrassingly long time in the metal 3D puzzle section. I always love to stop by when I'm in the area or have someone from out of town visiting. read more

We have 3 kids 9, 5 and 16 months and have been going there at least twice a year to buy their unique and fun toys, We were fine with their snooty hipster employees because the kids liked the place so much. But, two weeks ago, over a year into covid, they required our 16 month old daughter to wear a mask to enter the store?? We did not go in and were happy to spend our 300$ at "Over the Rainbow" toys instead. We will not only never, ever go back to Terra Toys, but am telling everyone we know same. read more

Oh, Terra Toys how I love you so! I am such a fan of this store. They have a great selection of cute little knick knacks. I normally find myself here on the weekends just to kill time. I never leave without purchasing at least one thing. That one thing is probably a Hello Kitty ink pen. They have a decent selection of Hello Kitty goodies. I prefer this store over Toy Joy. The coffee shop is a really cool addition with tons of local art, a giant chess board, and a real Zoltar fortune teller machine! I went in with very little time to look for some gifts for kids, only knowing a few of their interests, and Ezra instantly knew what to get them! The gifts were a hit with the little ones! She was like a magical gift elf fairy and seeing her interact with small children in the store was so precious. It's hard to find customer service like that. I love toys. And trinkets. And mainly stuff I don't "need." That's why I love Terra Toys. When you walk in, your eyes will explode from color and stripes and dots and glitter and swirls and whatever else this place has. My skin crawled a little. I have offspring, and I don't take them here. Not because I am a bad mother, or because I don't like them. It's because I can't spend more than ten minutes here. I love Terra Toys, but there is just SO much of it, and I'm not sure if I could ever drag the small-people out of here. Plus, they would neeeeeeeeeeeed everything in this place. Terra Toys creates custom Easter baskets for curbside pick-up. I told the staff things my boys enjoy, they pulled items and sent pics for my approval. We made some changes and they happily found alternatives. My friend used them for the same service and the knowledgeable staff helped her find items most suitable for a child on the Autism Spectrum. She was so happy that the staff had great ideas based on his needs. Really nice people, great products and a wonderful local treasure. read more

I've got a suspicion that some of my EMS partners have been giving out little gifts at the station and I don't want to be caught without anything to give. This place is Christmas!!!!!! They have everything. Faux food, Girl Scout necessities, the best best birthday items. They even have several items for hobbyists like the miniature house pieces. I would really like to give this store more stars, but there were several things that irked me. I went to support a local business and get my 1year old a birthday present. Holy moley - the prices! I saw a bat print hooded sweatshirt that was $60. That seems insane for an infant sized piece of clothing. They did have some awesome toys, but their baby section needs work. It's pretty small compared to the rest of the store and the prices are sky high. Yes that wooden tiger rattle from Germany is cute and well made, but it also costs $24. I think my 3.5 year old would benefit more from this store. When I took said $24 rattle to the counter I was ignored by 3 different staff members shuffling around the cash registers. I turned around and left the rattle where I found it. I should also mention that I went to the Walmart across the street and left empty handed as well, but that's a different story. Austin needs a place to buy non-plastic. non-electronic baby/toddler toys that isn't so expensive. read more
