Awesome toy store where the kids can touch everything. If you're the type who likes to feel things for yourself before buying, this is the place for you! Good selection of unique items that you can't find at Toys R Us. Nice area of handmade and USA-made clothes, albeit expensive. Very limited play kitchen goods (go across the street to Sandy's Shoes for more choices in that arena). Heavy on the Corolle dolls, which are no longer made in France but still carry the heavy price tag. EXCELLENT selection of Playmobil toys, including replacement parts a-plenty. Staff is helpful and fun. Each time we visit, we get coffee first and then spend at least an hour and a half wandering through the store. Give yourself and your kiddos time to play here, and you'll be happy with your visit. read more

Always a great toy store, full of fun and smart toys that you can't find at Target or Wallymart. Yes the staff are a bunch of goofs, some pedantic, but they do know their inventory and usually are quick with good suggestions if you are stuck. For us the playmobil section alone is enough to bring us back over and over. read more

What a neat place! Toys stores are an endangered species, but this place makes me feel like a kid again. I'm sure it's organized somehow, but it's so much fun to explore I just wandered aimlessly, picking things up and playing with them and grinning from ear to ear. The staff are great, too. They obviously love toys and it shows. I absolutely love Terra Toys. The store is packed with all kinds of fun things, including adult color by number books which I bought for myself. We did all of our Christmas shopping there this year, in one day! I think we'll be doing the same again next year. You can tell they have a sense of humor, and everything is well organized. Terra Toys has a definite Austin hipster vibe! The game selection is great, down to the insane variety of vibrantly colored marbles. They've curated a good book section, including some editions that are hard to find around town. They are great about letting children play. The one star rating is not for the selection of toys or the prices, I'm fine with both. The poor rating is for the way an attempted return was handled. I bought my son a small, relatively inexpensive remote control car that he was in love with. When we got it home and took it out of the package it didn't work. Okay, not that big a deal, I'll just return it no problem. Or so I thought. I live in South Austin and drove all the way back up north just to return this little toy the next day along with my receipt. The guy at the counter with his greasy little pony tail looked at the car and said the carrying case was missing a part and I could have dropped it so he wouldn't exchange it. Just like that. He was such a snit about it I asked to speak to the manager. He informed me that he was the manager in charge. I told him I'd never go back to the store and walked out. We then went to a chain toy store on South Lamar and bought $100 worth of remote control cars. They all worked great and if they didn't I have no doubt I would be able to return them. I have returned several items to this chain and have never been questioned and they are always courteous and helpful. I try to buy local and support homegrown business but I won't put up with being treated like I'm trying to rip somebody off. Not only do they have an unbelievable selection of cool toys, games, books for kids (and kids at heart), the customer service is beyond excellent! Went in last week in need affordable penguins for party favors. Ryan accepted the challenge and scoured the store until leading me to the perfect solution. Okay so I called in ahead of time to see if they had some mam mock smoke bombs, they said they did. So I drove from downtown to the store, when I get here they didn't have any. So the very friendly associate, Erak (I don't know if I spelled it right) went to the back and showed us a display of a hand grenade... wasn't what I came in for but I left somewhat satisfied. This is a great toy store that is easier to navigate than Toy Joy. I went in here to look for a holiday gift for my friend's toddler. I know absolutely nothing about kids other than the fact that they poop, eat and sleep, so I had no idea where to even start. The toys are sorta grouped by age group and gender, which conveniently narrowed down the selection for me. It looks as though toys for girls are over on the right hand side of the store, while toys that were made for boys are on the left hand side. Toys for the younger kids seem to be grouped in the front of the store while toys for the older kids are housed further back. They also have a small selection of books and stuffed animals at the very back of the store. Though the store is pretty good-sized, I didn't feel as though there was as much variety as I would have liked. The staff here are pretty nice and very helpful. I do like that this is a local business, which is a rarity for toy stores these days. And, I'll likely come back here when I get more toys for my friend's little boy. read more

Need a crazy cat lady action figure or a unicorn horn for your cat? Fun outdoor toys too like kites and all those neat juggling toys you see at Renaissance fairs. If you are looking for a good resuable bag they sell awesome Terra Toys navy zippered heavy-duty cloth bags that are super durable and have nice strong wide handles that won't cut into your shoulder when you load heavy stuff in it. Terra Toys is definitely not your run of the mill toy store! My kids and I were there for an hour and half playing and exploring (would probably be there longer if we didn't have somewhere else to be). The staff was friendly and helpful and interacted with my kids on their level. Billy showed us around the store and recommend some cool games and books. There are demos of the board games, which is a huge plus. Go check them out! read more

Playmobil items are typically $10 more for the exact item than any other retailer! So much fun! I brought my 7 year old here the other day. We've driven by many times because we play Pokemon at Dragon's Lair. I am so glad I listened to my friend as this is NOT your average toy store. You know that a business is worth the hype when there is a line to get in before it even opens. No special event. No give aways. We peeked in the window like little kids (well one of us was). When the door opened we raced in. The toys are separated by categories, which I am a huge fan of. We went right and found fun gadgets - yo-yos, kites, fans. Further back there was a coffee shop. Yum. Great for walking around. I loved the candy section - fun candy from England that I usually have to go to World Market to get. We found some fun books we've never seen before and even a shirt - they have children clothes! When we checked out there was a line, but worth it. The staff was very friendly and apologized for the wait - no need to apologize for being popular. We had a great conversation with the staff when we checked out. Everyone is so happy to be there. I bet you can't walk out happy either! read more

Love this place! I have been shopping here for years and this week was my best experience thanks to one of their new empolyees Sam! He helped me find two gifts and did it with a smile. He stayed with for over 25 min helping me and my indecisive 5 year old make the best choice for a gift. You would have thought I was coming in spending $500 with the type of treatment I recieved!! I love this store. They have a great selection of interesting, fun, educational toys. The toys aren't campy or trendy, like at some boutique toy stores. They're genuinely beautiful, and made to be played with for hours and hours and hours. Beautiful wooden toys, exciting building toys, gorgeous dolls, fantastical imaginative creatures. The staff is knowledgeable and extremely helpful. I've had multiple experiences with describing a child and having them help me find the perfect toy. They have options in every price range - I've never spent more than I budgeted here. (Although, the very second I have a limitless budget, this is going to be the first place I go! Oh, the awesomeness that exists at the top of the price range!) I've had great luck finding unique, engaging gifts for under $20 or so. It's a delight to find such a great selection of truly engaging toys outside of the standard "big box" options. And the reception you receive when you show up at a birthday party with a Terra Toys bag.... They love to see that gift coming! read more

We live dangerously close to Terra Toys but I'm so happy to have such a great local toy store in our neighborhood. My 10 month-old son's jaw drops whenever we go inside because of so much to see. The selection of toys cannot be beat. We even found ourselves circling back several times around the store to make sure we did not miss anything cool. I LOVE that they carry the clothing brand Zutano and so many 'green' toys. I already anticipate coming here in the years ahead because there are so many things faor kids (and even adults) of all age groups. I love this store! read more

The best toy store I've ever been to with two wild little preschool-aged boys in tow. The demo toys are at their eye level and the expensive ones are protected in cases or up high so I do not worry as much about breakage. "I only regret that me and my children do not have more money to spend here." Other than the need to leave the diaper bag at the door (they don't allow patrons to carry bags in due to shoplifting issues), I've got nothing bad to say. This is my wife and my children's favorite place in our hometown. (And it would be mine but Alamo Drafthouse across the street is more up Dad's alley). Staff here have always been very courteous, friendly, and patient. The last time we were in they gave us free refreshments, including a sparkling grape juice. THIS PLACE IS LOCALLY OWNED AND OPERATED. AUSTINITES NEED TO SHOP HERE FOR THEIR KIDS FIRST, as it will benefit us all in the long run. They have a famous habit of encouraging patrons to play with the toys and trying them out. How rare is that? In years of patronizing this place we've never encountered an employee that doesn't want to be there. They all seem to be great with kids, not to mention respective of parents. Also, if you're into Toy Stores the way they WERE, stop by, you'll see why. Another thing about Terra Toys is that it's not a bad place to find Home School aids, despite the fact that it's not something they officially promote. Prices seem quite reasonable.
