I swung by today hoping I could run in, grab a toy, and support a local business. I was told I could only come in the store for a fee of 25$ and get a credit only if I spent 100$. I don't think this policy is appropriate or sends the right message to patrons or staff. If Covid is the concern, then is the 25$ price tag akin to the value of your staff? I also don't think charging a fee to enter a store that already is expensive for toys is a good business model either. It is in a strip mall not downtown Manhattan. This is my second failed attempt to shop there and there will not be third. read more

This is seriously the very best toy store I've been to in a long time. The selection, organization, and service here were all excellent. I stopped in looking for some Texas-centric things to take back with me to Seattle. (I'm from Austin originally.) and while I didn't find anything in that skein, I found quite a few other things I didn't know existed at the time. Also, (and here's the fifth star) there's an espresso bar in the back of the store that has really good espresso. The person manning that espresso bar knew when the coffee was roasted, what the source of the beans were, and was very genial. read more

I have loved Terra Toys for a long time. Their selection is magical, they hire knowledgable staff, they are committed to interesting independent toy companies, and they make it a fun place to be. Today they went above and beyond as I, a broken-spirited woman, sat on the floor holding two different ukeles and arguing with a three-year-old about whether to get red or green (the three-year-old wanted brown, which was not an option). The argument went on so much longer than it should have. It went on while the kind Terra Toys employee stood by, waiting and non-judgemental. The employee (whose name I don't remember but who was very knowledgable about ukes!) showed me what to look for in construction and pointed out the salient features without giving me any kind of "hard" upsell. He made space for me to ask questions and also made space for me to have a ludicrous mini-breakdown in the process (I swear, I didn't make a scene, I just cried the tiniest bit). And then when my child wandered away to find a matching hat, the employee just locked up the case without any dirty looks or passive aggressive digs. Parents of toddlers, you KNOW he would have been well within his right! I wouldn't have blamed him! But his kindness was really, really appreciated on a really rough day. Go for the toys, obviously. The toys are cool. But support this local shop because they hire people who care. And Terra Toys management? I hope you guys make every effort to take good care of your employees. We LOVE Terra Toys!!! And honestly, what's not to love?! They have some of the most unique toys that your Amazon account wishes it could tempt you with. They have books, puzzles, doll house galore, Lego type intricate toys, trains, UNIQUE board/card games, dress up, spy, CANDY, magic, space, outdoor toys, colors, and my favorite part - prankster toys. Everyone comes here and gets lost for all time. It is so much fun! This is my go to spot for birthday parties, my own babes gifts, stocking gifts, presents... etc. On top of all of the fun merchandise, the staff is friendly and warm. Terra Toys is always an interesting stop for me and the family. Even if nothing new has really come in, it's always neat to play with the toys and joke around while taking asinine pics of yourself messing around with their stuff. Wait that might just be me... It's somewhat of a big store crammed full of all kinds of interesting toys and doodads. Although I do admit I spent more time to the right of the store than to the left and the back area since more of the adults and Hello Kitty lovers of the world unite in the whatnots and what have youse (forgive my spelling... I had a tough time with that last word) in this area. Yes, I tried to throw one of those circular boomerangs over here... yes, I looked at the cat unicorn thingamajig and considered buying it for one of my friend's cats... and yes, I looked through those weird sorta 3D glasses that makes everything with a light glitter like a disco ball all around you... From dolls to science to magic to blocks to music... this place focuses on the timeless classics that often gets overlooked by a place like Toys R Us, which is occupied with always updating its stock to reflect whatever the kids are into at the moment. Here, you might find something you were into as a kid but thought was discontinued or something. My favorite thing - there's an adjacent sweets/coffee shop that you can enter through the toy store, and they have a Zoltar fortune teller, like from the Tom Hanks movie "Big". I was standing there just looking at it and it called out to me to come closer. I got a kick out that, but then one of the employees jokingly expressed amazement at how it could call out to me, since the machine was unplugged. What a great little toy store nestled in the same parking lot as Precision Camera and Hopdoddy Burger. We decided to peruse a bit and cut Kiddo loose. Lots of fun was had exploring new toys and getting in to absolutely everything! The employees there didn't make a peep or give us the stink eye, which is great. A true kids' place. What got my goat a bit was the employee at the counter and the dumb train whistle I purchased; it didn't work. As long as it took me to walk out of the store, unwrap it and blow into it, I was right back at the counter returning it. I told the girl that it didn't work well. She put in up to her mouth and said something like, "Sounds like a train to me." Sure, maybe one really, really far away struggling to get uphill. No way my kids would have liked it and in today's economy, $3 can buy half a triple venti latte. She processed the informational side of my return, and then said,"That'll be it!" Whereby I replied, "Uhh... My money?" Needless to say, I left a slightly peeved but all in all, good times! read more

The best toy shop ever! We have been taking our kids there for over a decade. Kids don't want to go anywhere else to shop for toys anymore.

What a great time we had here! We started at the coffee shop that is joined to the toy store where the lovely barista chatted with us and made us some fabulous coffee. They have a lot of local art in there, from paintings and interactive art to jewelry and sculptures. We moved from there into the main building, which was organized very well and had so much to look at. Tin toys, dolls, Russian nesting dolls, D20 dice, LEGOs, robots, Miyazaki stuff. Bruh, I read my old review (being surprised that I wrote a review at all!) and thought I was pretty harsh on my ranking. I *do* remember being very irritated that other people were helped first when I was standing in line in front of those people, waiting to be checked out. Perhaps I was just a more hot headed person in my youth. Either way, I think I should have given them 3 stars. Not 2 stars. And I can't figure out how to modify it so I'm writing this update! I've been here a TON of times since my last review and it's now my most favorite toy store ever! Toy Joy still holds a special place in my heart as well and I would go there if I wanted something whimsical or retro (think stuff from the 90's or 2000's!) but I would come to Terra Toys if I wanted a quality toy to actually buy for a kiddo for their birthday! You should go check out both, however, as they're completely different kinds of toy stores and you'll see what I mean when you go! The employees are super friendly and always so helpful and I've never gotten passed over in line again! Everything is super well organized, clean, and there's a ton of stuff without it being too cluttered to move around in. They have a pretty impressive selection of tin toys, puzzles (both the jigsaw and the more mechanical kind), board games (and doll house things but those are a bit scary to me so I walk past that as quickly as I can), and children's books. You won't find a lot (any?) Super fancy electronic toys like Leap Pads or PlayStations here but there are a ton of wooden toys! I've always managed to find something new to check out when I'm there because their inventory does change! They even have a cafe so you can grab a coffee to keep up with your little ones! So. Terra Toys: not just an unbelievable selection of toys, but an AMAZING employee named Billy makes any experience there better. Here's the sitch: I needed a rubber duckie that squeaked; my husband and I were performing at a benefit for a little girl whose favorite song was "Rubber Duckie", and I wanted to entertain her with a squeak to accompany the song. I called Toys R Us first, as it's closer to my house. The first time? Someone hung up on me. The second time, I got a human who was so rushed I couldn't even understand her name. I asked if she had a rubber duckie, she said yes, I asked if it squeaked, and the disdain in her voice as she said, "NO. It's a BATH TOY." Not sure why that makes a squeaker obsolete, or why she seemed put out by my question. I called Terra Toys, Billy answered so pleasantly. I guardedly asked, "Do you have rubber duckies?" And he said, "Yes, I sure do!" I asked, "Great! I'm sorry to ask you, I'm sure since it's Saturday morning you're probably swamped there, but do you happen to know if they squeak?" He said, "I'm not sure, hold on, I'll check," and he put me on hold so fast I didn't even have a chance to say WOW, thanks. He came right back on and told me they had several that squeaked, including a big one that floated and had little "babies" that sat on it, and they all squeaked. I could hear the smile in his voice as he told me. He was just as nice when I showed up to get the ducks. The place was PACKED, but he, standing behind the counter in his ti-cornered pirate's hat, was calm and helpful yet again. SO, Toys R Us might have better prices for toys and stuff; big box stores often do. But if you want a great customer experience, incredible selection, and to support a local business, go here. Squeeeeee! Score those specialty toys that no one else has at Terra Toys. Just picked up a couple of Steiff's (I know I know... but they are so awesome and we go with the 3 gifts, not a huge pile theory.. that is how I justify all this adorableness) But seriously, it was easy to pick up a bag of trinkets that won't be found elsewhere and at the end of the day the price was reasonable. The best part is that the items are unique - and not to be easily found elsewhere. The staff is awesome - and they know the many nooks and crannies and will help you weigh the options available. Dec 23rd 2016 at 9:30am I called Terra Toys and spoke to Billy. I explained I need 4 wrapped toys for 4 kids that my friend "adopted" for the holidays thru his church for Christmas. This family is in desperate "need". Billy at Terra toys told me "Sorry I can't help you its the busiest day of the year for us" Great, I'll let those poor children know, Billy said Terra was too "busy for ya".. So, I immediately called a store I love that I forget carries tons of great toys, "Whole Earth Provisions" on Lamar and after hearing what I needed they were actually VERY happy to help me, knowing what the cause was, They said "Yes we are busy too, but its Christmas and this is what Christmas is all about" A good reminder for Billy.. I never complained about Terra even though they seem sometimes annoyed even on a regular day while shopping in there, but this was over the top. UPDATE: 11am Sylvia the owner of Terra Toys called me and said she apologized for this experience and said Billy was spoken too about it as well. She said that are not trained to treat customers the way I was treated. She offered to help me with all other future shopping experiences in the future. She was open to listening to my advice and what I had to say. I may give them another chance in the future, but I am still very happy Whole Earth Provisions was super kind and caring, cause they helped dissolve any and all frustration that I had about the Terra incident. When it comes to toys and fun thingamabobs, They have a little bit of everything here for every age. Recently, friends sent us a wish list for their (precious) one year old's birthday. After browsing the list, from socks to toys, I realized I had no idea where to buy kids' stuff. Think. Think. Think. Oh, duh, Terra Toys would have everything on this list! Not exactly the same brand, but at least the same stuff. They have the store divided into ages, which makes it easy to shop and compare the different gifts on our list without running around the entire store. We found the cutest squirting bath toys (it took us way too long to decide which ones because they were all so cute) and a little net for storing them. They may not have the huge selection of toys like the chains, but as I always say: quality is better than quantity. I have been here several times before to pick out gifts for my niece and nephew. A stuffed dragon that lights up and roars is still one of my nephew's favorite toys, and I bought it from Terra Toys two years ago. They also have created such a warm atmosphere. I love Terra Toys. I can always walk in here and find a bunch of things I love and definitely don't need. If I want to find a really cool gift and I need some cute little trinkets to add to a preexisting gift, I'll come here. I mean, really, they have THE cutest erasers in a variety of animal and food shapes. Is your favorite animal a hedgehog? They've got an eraser of it. Do you love lucky cats? They have lucky cat erasers. Do you like pandas, crocodiles, bunnies, ducks, monkeys, cows, and pigs? They have the eraser in all sorts of fun colors. They also have sushi and french fry erasers, too. (And that doesn't even cover half of their eraser selection!) In addition to that bundle of fun, they also have a pretty decent Sanrio selection. (That's Hello Kitty, for those not in the know.) This makes me a very happy camper. In that same section, they also have some super cute lunch boxes and bento boxes and ridiculously adorable notepads and stationery. Need some fun little packages of candy? They have pretty much everything you could ever want, including a hefty selection of Haribo candy. (Personally, I like to buy the little mini packages of various candies and add them to gifts as little filler items. So cute and everyone loves it, especially if you get their favorites.) They have an incredible selection of children's books. I'm always really impressed with that part of the store. They also have an incredible selection of stuffed animals. (This also makes me happy because, even though I am an adult, I definitely have a small collection of stuffed animals.) They have a section dedicated to doll house accessories. These accessories are amazing and incredibly detailed. It makes me want to buy a dollhouse and fill the rooms with all the cute things I find. They sell Nanoblocks. Full disclosure - I used to work at the LEGO store and I am a LEGO fan for life... but Nanoblocks are seriously cool. I didn't even know they existed until I saw them here and now I want all of the sets. (Okay, maybe not all of them, but I definitely see myself buying some in the future.) If you use your Go Local card, you get free gifts! Once I got a small bag filled with a few little items and candy, and the second time I got to pick two things out of a bucket - I got a dinosaur and a Laffy Taffy. Oh! One last thing! If you're like me and you LOVE stickers, they also have super cute stickers near the Sanrio section. (I got some ridiculously adorable felt cat stickers on my last visit.) I love toy stores and I feel that it is super unfortunate that I only rarely find myself browsing one. Why is that? It's sad really. As far as Terra Toys goes, though, they have repeatedly proven themselves to be a fine establishment wherein I have found super awesome and neat things for everyone on my list. Need a toy for a baby shower? Came in and discovered Zoobies. Need a funky and unique stuffed animal for a little girl who has lots of stuffed animals? Walked in and browsed the zoo and found just what I was looking for. Have no idea what to get your friend's one year old who probably got every top toy and other mainstream gift already? Came in and browsed the unique baby and kid's clothes, as well as a really cool toy section that includes vintage and solid looking wooden toys, and things I've seen nowhere else. I ended up purchasing a super cute Deer named Blanche who was wearing a pretty little dress. She's made by a company in France. It was absolutely perfect! This store is comprehensive. I love coming here during Halloween and walking through their massive display when I enter the store. There's endless wonder in here, from big kids to little kids, from collectors to readers to gamers. And now they've opened up a super neat cafe adjoining their main space. Although we didn't have time time to hop into the cafe to get something, I'm thinking we might need to go back for that. Customer service at Terra Toys has always been fantastic as well. Free gift wrap and the people at the counter are fun, with a silly sense of humor - and when I leave, I always secretly hope some of that energy has rubbed off on me so that I can bring a little of Terra with me. All in all, it is always a pleasure to go in here whether to browse, find something spectacular and memorable to give to others, or to just get silly. Five stars easily earned. read more

Okay, check it out: toy stores aren't just for kids. In fact, I'll go out on a limb and say good toy stores are almost wasted on kids, unless those kids happen to have really rad parents who can teach their kids why cheap, plastic Tonka trucks from Wal-Mart suck and why medieval soldier guys with horses and chain mail completely rock. Or even better, if they have parents that can explain why everybody--including moms, dads, and little boys--should play with paper dolls. Dude, they have medieval warrior paper dolls, too. I know, right?! Okay, I'm actually not obsessed with medieval warriors in real life, but I have a little boy, and every time we take him to Terra Toys he is drawn to the medieval "action figures" and we've bought that warrior paper doll book a few times (because he keeps losing it. I'm not the kind of mom that cleans up her kids' rooms, so things tend to get lost. A lot.) But there's other awesome stuff, too. My daughter and I can rarely be torn away from the gobs of Sanrio stuff without muchcajoling (or threatening). They have puzzles, and educational toys, and kits to make stuff, and books, and games. . . just all kinds of crazy toys. And when I say toys, I mean really awesome toys. The kind you might have asked your mom to buy you when you were little but your mom either didn't get it or complained that they were too expensive. (And on that score, I will admit, it's more expensive than you're going to pay at Target or Wal-Mart, but the quality of toy is so much better.) It's a wonderland--it really is. I like it as much as Toy Joy, and I like the location better. (Trying to park at Toy Joy is a bloody nightmare, I tell you what.) We bring the kids here any time they have to pick out gifts for birthday parties, because there's something for everyone: you're not stuck with GI Joe an Bratz dolls (thank you, Allah.) We've been known to put together little care packages filled with little puzzles and candy and the like, and the giftees have always been tickled pink over the gift. Go and let yourself play. And, yeah, take your kids if they want to go. But if you don't have kids, go anyway. It's as much for you as for them. read more

This place is like a Willy Wonka and Disney store on steroids. I am always enchanted by my experience. The staff are delightful. There is so much to see, so many nooks are cranys with hidden treasures. We go and spend hours here. We went the weekend before the 4th of July and they even had an interactive fireworks activity out front. Of course it was all low key but still a blast. If you love toys, adventure and kids (big or small), this is an awesome place to visit. read more

When I bought a co-worker a mechanical tin robot (it sparks!) from Terra Toys, the friendly cashier slipped it inside a bag decorated with a Crayola-colored carrot, then added orange and green tissue paper on top, making it look a lot like a carrot top. (The vegetable, not the has-been comic.) It's a great way to give a gift - I like it when the packaging is as good as the gift. So Terra Toys is a great place to buy a gift for your niece or nephew, but it's also a good spot for those friends who haven't quite grown up yet. Each area is has its own theme: zoo animals, horses, space, princesses, babies, trucks and cars, etc. My favorite area is dedicated to all things pirate. (I have a penchant for men with peg legs, what can I say?) And the staff likes to shoot an air cannon at unsuspecting shoppers (young and old alike); I think that's why my fiance likes it so much. read more

I inadvertently crashed a party today. It was a fairy party, wands and all. Upon the drunken decision a few nights ago to get out and explore the city I was born in, Terra Toys was one of the first places I could think of. I have seen it in passing for years and never visited it. I walked in and I didn't walk out until over an hour later. It was packed to the helm with everything a child or child at heart would ever desire. I spent a good while in the art section trying to talk myself into purchasing one of origami instruction books. They have all sorts of goodies; too much to list, honestly. Today of all days, they were hosting a fairy party, and it looked as though the kids had an amazing time. They had stations throughout the large store to make fairy dolls, indulge in some rather delightful look fairy cookies and tea. It was set up so that regular shoppers would not feel as if they were getting in the way. I will absolutely return for another visit and next time I will bring the hubsters. He's a big nerd like me. Now, if you will excuse me, I must clean up the trail of "fairy confetti" that I dragged into the house. Oops. read more

She wants to live in this store, if you try and make her leave she'll kick you in the guts. just the fact that my daughter spent 30 minute pulling out rubber balls and tossing them around (though I did round them up myself - I'm not an asshole) and the staff wasn't even fazed deserves 10 stars. I'm sure they have seen it all, and they are still nice, helpful, and great. If I worked here I would totally have PTSD in a week, or at least some form of sympathy-ADHD. Yesterday was free museum day in our fair city and I foolishly thought it would be an awesome idea to take the kiddo to the Children's Museum. After about 5 minutes in and many little toes colliding with mine, I had had about enough. I finally understand the point of the free hours at the Children's Museum. It is to make you wish you had paid the money in order to avoid all that. On the way home, I made a snap decision to check out Terra Toys and absolutely loved it. This should have been where we went in the first place. My daughter had a great time playing with the train table for about 20 minutes while I stood by wondering where she got an obsession with trains. Wooosh! That's the sound of my childhood flashing back to me as I step through the doors of Terra Toys. I remember as a wee lass visiting their location on South Congress with giddiness and excitement- but as an adult thought the child had long since evaporated from my system and my memories of oogling Playmobils and fake vomit were long behind me. Nope. WOOOSH! Toys have a very distinct smell to them. Toy stores are filled with this intoxicating aroma. Good toys. You walk into a big box store and everything smells of bleach and saddness. You walk into a great toy store that specializes in making children and big kids happy through adventure and imagination and you can't help but think, "Have I died and gone to heaven?" Yes, friends, Terra Toys is one of these havens I find myself in from time to time- although I admit about 65% of the time it is to find something for myself. Hello Kitty items, weird candy, lunchbox/bento, and the occasional Playmobil.... you'll find these in my basket. If I'm getting something for someone, I might seek out spy gear, clever games, dress up stuff, books, Playmobils (just kidding- the Playmobils are still all mine!)... This place has an excellent selection and is definitely a gem of the Austin family-friendly scene. It is easy to get to, find parking, get lost in the toys, and come out with a happy purchase. So if you need a reminder that yes, you once were a child, too- here is one of the very best places to have that feeling come back at you like a ton of Playmobil boxes toppling over you at Christmastime. read more

I had the best experience today at this wonderful place. We were greeted and guided by Jared, who was cheerful and extremely helpful in the process of finding some gifts for our son. One of the toys we were looking for was out of stock and he wrote our info on the list to call us when available. At the end, we chose 3 toys and left extremely happy. SO COOL TO VISIT and the STAFF IS GREAT! This place is super cool. They have all of these toys you forgot even existed when you were a kid. Plus they have unique and clever toys that even adults get excited about. I got some smaller stuff to keep on my desk at work for when people need a stress relief break or need to brain floss while working on a project. They're a hit. Recently I called an asked if they would consider donating an item or a gift card to an event I was in charge of planning for my church. It was a single mom's event on Mother's Day weekend. They totally showed up in the biggest way. They said they'd get something ready for me to pick up. I get there, tell them what I'm there to pick up, and out comes the cutest box, full of all sorts of fun things PLUS a gift card for the kids to pick out their own toys when they come in to visit. How great is that?! I love this place, get my nephews toys here, and come back any time I need something for work or for a friend.
