Looking for a place to have a few cocktails before dinner, we stopped in at Terry's. I had done a little searching on Yelp to find a spot with nice ambiance and I was initially drawn to the images of their patio. We ended up enjoying a drink at the bar since it was a bit chilly outside. I am sure glad we did! We had a wonderful bartender who handcrafted a couple of timeless drinks for us, as well as entertained our longing to watch the Warriors game (: The drinks and the appetizers we ordered were absolutely delicious and made us hungry/thirsty for more. I wish we had stayed for dinner because the entrees looked incredible! We were also very fortunate to meet and speak with a gentleman who frequents Terry's and sings in the evening with another amazing woman. We had such an incredible time here and really felt at home with everyone we had the pleasure of speaking with. I wouldn't hesitate to come back here when we make our way back to Carmel! read more

We had been in this place before to check out the Cypress Inn hotel, which is owned by Doris Day, but today was the first time we actually ate here. We had our dog with is so we sat on the patio in the courtyard, though dogs are also welcome inside. We both order the artichoke appetizer, which was very good but very small. You get just a half artichoke. I also had prawns with cocktail sauce and a beer (happy hour prices). My wife had chicken piccata that she enjoyed. They also serve sourdough bread, which was still a bit warm. Our waitress was pleasant but not real attentive. Even with happy hour and our limited order. our bill came to over $60. Overall, nice place with good ambience but overly priced. read more

Super cute lounge/restaurant. Many options of comfortable spots to lounge throughout the space. We opted for the lounging area that had a guitarist performing that night that was fantastic. We had a nice glass of wine and a cosmo and some appetizers and it was a perfect dinner! The funnest part of our evening was the acceptance of DOGS in the lounge. So much fun interacting with the dogs and their parents. So much fun and we will be back to dine at car week this year. read more

Arrived in Carmel by the Sea around 8:45 pm on a Sunday in early Feb. Checked into a hotel a block away, so managed to get to Terry's Lounge by 9:15 pm. Asked about ordering food as we entered - was abruptly (not kindly) told that it was last call for drinks. I asked why the website doesn't indicate there is no food or beverage served after 9:30 pm on Sunday (It says food until 10 pm, and drinks until 11 pm). I just got a shrug - no explanation about the discrepancy. I used to love this place - stayed there several times, with and without our dogs. The place seems to have taken a dive, as successful long-time businesses often do, when they feel repeat customers will keep them afloat. They start coasting, and it doesn't end well. We love to visit Carmel, mostly for the beach, but we will need to update our list of favorite places to stay and eat. Fortunately, there seem to be some options that we look forward to exploring. read more

I was really looking forward to a night out with the friend to celebrate our belated birthdays. We had high expectations for this adorable place with the live music. Too bad the service completely spoiled our evening. We were seated at the corner table and we asked (very nicely) our waitress Sandra to move to a different table that was available, but were told in a very abrupt manner that all of the tables were reserved (we had the reservation too!). She even brought the hostess to confirm it (again, rather rudely). As we were leaving, two hours later, all 3 vacant tables were still available... I've worked in hospitality industry for 10 years, but you don't have to be an expert to know what the good service should be like. The food and the drinks were tasty. read more

This is our (wife and pups) happy place! We come here every year and the food and drinks just get better each time. The outdoor patio feels like you are in France and the menu has a little something for everyone. I got the garden burger and my wife got an incredible Cesar salad with prawns. The cocktails are to die for and the staff is always friendly and professional. When we first entered the outdoor seating area, it appeared as though we were going to get great service. We received our drinks and a couple of menus quickly. The waitress seemed pleasant and attentive. I even checked in with the comment "great outdoor seating area and exceptional service". That was a mistake.... After we ordered our food, we sat for a long time without anyone checking on us; we had to flag someone down to get water refills. The food finally arrived; the food was great - the burger was moist but not wet and drippy, the sweet potato fries were crisp, and the artichoke was very flavorful. The waitress was nowhere to be found for a long time. We had to ask the guy cleaning tables for more water, the dessert menu, and even the check. We were thinking about ordering dessert, but we didn't want to deal with the poor service. The 2 stars is for the food that was great, but I can't stand poor service. I won't be back. read more

Don't claim to have the best burger in town and then overcook it by two temperatures, even after emphasizing that it should not be overcooked when ordered. The garlic fries are absolutely delicious!! I couldn't stop eating them! The artichoke is also totally worth getting - and the dipping sauce they bring on the side is amazing! Can't believe we hadn't heard of this place until last week, wish we'd found it sooner. Had a great meal here last Friday. Walked in for dinner without a reservation, and were quickly seated with our 2 dogs out on their cute courtyard at a nice warm table. We ordered off of the bar food menu, making a dinner out of it. Everything was great from the shrimp cocktail to dessert. Mixed drinks also were great. Service was super friendly and attentive. People who work at this place also really like dogs! Other servers stopped just to visit and say hi to them. It was nice sitting out on the patio but also being able to hear the live music from inside the lounge, a small perk. This past weekend we were celebrating my wife's 60th birthday. Shhhh! We booked a surprise dinner in a private room within Terry's lounge for 13 people. Lee Ann Hein, the manager, went far above and beyond helping create a menu, ordering a birthday cake, selecting wines, etc. I could never have done it without her and April, our personal waitress. I found a charge on my credit card statement that read Terry's Lounge and I just thought I blacked out again since I've never heard of a lounge named Terry in Carmel. Well, I Googled it and found out this is the lounge inside of Cypress Inn. It is a very special and inimate lounge that serves solid drinks. A bit upscale yet slightly casual only because they are THE most dog friendly establishment I have ever been too (besides a dog park). I was impressed. We wandered into this restaurant (at the Cypress Inn) on the recommendation from a stranger who overheard us wondering if there was anywhere to eat with our dog on the chilly evening (many patios were closed). It was a dream come true: * most tables had a calm dog or two under foot * service was friendly and patient * indoor seating with patio heaters * outdoor seating with live music * not one but TWO vegan items on the menu Great for dinner, great for a post-beach beer and nibbles (ask for the complimentary "bar snacks"). Sweet Jesus, this place is terrible! Extremely slow service (waitress checked on us once and disappeared for 45 mins) and the food was an actual crime to cuisine. I make and order short ribs regularly and I was served the hardest/toughest piece of short rib I ever seen! It was like cutting through a brick and it appeared to be covered in a canned sauce. There's NO WAY it was braised. I sent it back, and went to eat somewhere else. We came here two nights in a row because we liked it so much. First, the ambience is great because the Cypress Inn is an older hotel with a lot of character. Picture stucco walls, tile floors and lounge furniture in the bar area. Second, there are dogs everywhere! If you don't like dogs then stay away from here (and Carmel in general). We love dogs and were missing ours so we were pleased to pet a few while at the bar. The staff obviously loves dogs too because they walked around talking to them and helping corral the dogs who were off leash and wanted to wander. The food and drinks are both reasonably priced and the portion sizes are huge. They offer both small and large plates and the large plates are heaping so you better be hungry if you order one. The servers were all very friendly and attentive so we felt very much welcome and at home. This doesn't feel at all like your typical boring hotel bar. I'm a beer drinker, so three stars is about as high as a place can go when a place doesn't have beer taps and I'm forced to think about ordering a mix drink. I had a gin and tonic. The girlfriend had a Maker's Mark. Total: $23.00, which is fairly reasonable for mix drinks in a vacationy kind of town. The atmosphere is what makes this place, as it's always interesting to look up from your drink and see a poodle sitting on the bar stool next to you. This is pretty much made possible by the fact that the dogs are generally more well-behaved than their masters. I'd go back if I was in the mood for something other than beer. I'd probably take my mom there as well, as all of the Doris Day (owner of the establishment) movie posters on the wall took me back to the days of one TV and being forced to watch Pillow Talk over and over again. read more

I was pleasantly surprised by the food, drink and service at Terry's Lounge. And though the ambiance was a bit retro, it was very colorful (speaking figuratively) and enjoyable. I didn't know what to think about the "small plates", but it turned out, in my mind, to be "entrees in reasonable portions". We started by sharing the cream of broccoli soup and the beet salad. The soup was unique, smooth and of a satisfying portion. The beets were chopped into small cubes and served as a scoop of red/yellow beets over lettuce with a dollup of tasty goat cheese and a flavorful vinaigrette. She had the crab cake appetizer for her entree, and I had the sand dab small plate. There were three small crab cakes served with a chutney sauce. Fresh-tasting crab meat, crispy on the outside, and a good combination with the chutney. I got three halves of very meaty sand dab fillets with a yummy tarragon sauce. After the appetizers, I couldn't finish the "small" plate! Overall, the meal and dining experience itself was very good. We were seated promptly, and the service was very friendly and attentive. As noted earlier, the decor is a bit retro, and it's not the "happening" place in Carmel, so you don't get great people-watching (hence, 4, not 5, stars), but we'll almost certainly return. read more

We ate dinner here 2 nights, we stayed in Marina because this time we were here in our RV and when I called ahead, the rooms were all booked at the Cypress Inn. My wife is a favorite fan of Doris Day.....so we always fit the hotel and lounge in our plans when we are in the Carmel area. Terry's Lounge has exceptional bands playing by the fireplace. If you are ever passing through or better yet staying in Carmel-By-The-Sea, check in and see who is in the lounge. And definitely stay at the Cypress Inn, have a meal on the patio or just get a photo taken in or around the property. The lounge is a home-like environment, the service is awesome and the cocktails are creatively made and they can make any drink! Terry's Lounge is a great place to enjoy a few drinks, listen to some music and make a new friend or two. We met four airline stewards, from British Airways, that actually drove down for the evening from San Jose International - on the referral of a local in San Jose. 10 plus for this establishment!! read more

My wife took me to dinner here last night for my birthday. We enjoyed a solid meal in a very comfortable room with very good service. It was a Tuesday night, and the dining room was fairly quiet. For appetizers, the oysters were very fresh, and the beet salad with goat cheese was also quite nice. For my entree, I had the porterhouse - which was 20oz. of nicely prepared beef. For dessert, the bread pudding, which I would highly recommend. I'm taking them down a notch because my entree was delivered in the warm to very warm range. Nothing was hot. The steak arrived very warm, but the mashed potatoes and the accompanying vegetables were just warm. The staff were all very cordial and welcoming. For a hotel, this restaurant is very solid. However, it could use just a bit more sparkle to put it over the top. As others note, the Cypress Inn is dog friendly. We came to Terry's for a dinner and drinks and the ambience was very nice with a Spanish guitar playing live. Due to covid precautions we sat outside and the waiter immediately brought us 2 huge heaters so it was very comfy. Food was very good too, we got chicken picatta and truffle ravioli and lava cake as a dessert - everything delicious. The only think was that we had to wait for very very long time just to get our drinks and food, but the atmosphere was so nice that we didn't mind. We would come back again ! read more

How fantastic that you can bring your dog inside the Cypress Inn and sit with them in the bar/lounge area. The lounge has great atmosphere along with a TV. Service was great even on a busy weekend during the peak tourist season. There is a lounge with live performances and a lovely outdoor patio. I just wish they had a better wine selection that was less focused on wines from the Monterey area, but I appreciate their trying to keep things local. read more

A great place for BOTH dogs and people. The people who work there make the place. Thora is possibly the best bartender in town. Mary is a server extraordinaire! Often you'll see Denny LeVette, who co-owns the hotel with Doris Day, and is a wonderful host. Tuesday is "Local's Night," when you'll find a lower ratio of tourists. The food is excellent and the hamburgers are the best in town. 2012/13 update: Thora is gone, but Will is there with Mary, Steve, and Drago, who I neglected to mention four years ago. Classy and comfortable lounge in Carmel. Beautifully decorated with tributes to Doris Day (a co-owner of the Cypress Inn where the lounge is housed) all over. Story goes, that Doris (an animal rights activist) wanted a place that people could comfortably visit and stay at with their animal companions. Hence the animal friendly policy at the hotel and lounge. Note: there is a "no-pet" section for those who only want to rub elbows with humanoids (though I did see some two-legged animals sitting at the bar when I went). If I could place minus for this place, I would. Usually I do not place bad reviews for businesses. We reserved a week in advance for party of ten to celebrate a special occasion. I was promised that even Covid rules did not allow to seat us together, they will seat 6+4 at the close tables. The restaurant (outside) was EMPTY. Nobody , but us. The manager Nancy very roughly stated that the only way she can seat us at the tables on the opposing sides of the courtyard. Which mean like 10 empty tables in between And then she had enough guts to lye in my face that all other tables were reserved. Even she was saying that it impossible to reserve particular table to start with. When we expressed that we do not like it and we are upset , she called police and asked us to leave . She said that she does not need our business Very rude ,not even trying to be nice or accommodating for customers or care about business All she wanted to be bossy and to rule. Wishing I could have a stellar review to share, but unfortunately to the contrary. Our party of 4 (greyhound in tow) arrived at our reserved time of 6:30pm tonight. We were seated by the hostess, and after getting situated, we were told that the table was reserved for another party. So, they moved us to yet another table. We took it in stride and AGAIN got situated (dog too). After less than 5 minutes, the waiter came to our table and announced.... "Do you want the good news or the bad news?". He then preceded to share that the good news is we could order a drink, but not food. Um, what? Per the waiter, their "system" was down and it could he "hours" until we could be served. Not only we were we completely disappointed, but now we were facing the fact that we had to search out a new restaurant....at 7pm in the evening. At no point did management come to our table, offer apologies, they simply threw their waiter to the "wolves". Completely unacceptable. I had high hopes, after reading other reviews. Poor form. 2pm - Come on guys ! 15 minutes we sat at the bar while a new barman struggled to make cocktails and couldn't serve us even though the place was hardly full. Meanwhile plenty of other staff just ignored us. No stars guys if I could give you for that. Left to find a better bar. I love your dog policy but not when you're treating them better than us ! 7.30pm - But then - for some reason we passed here at night and heard wonderful music coming out of the place. A pianist called Gennady and Debbie on vocals. That guy can really play piano. The bar service this time was very sharp. All in all a fantastically entertaining couple of hours in there. This Loung is one of the best places in Carmel to go for a drink. You will meet interesting old people as well as some youngsters. BarTenders are good and will take good care of you. Menu is deep enough and the hotel where this lounge is at offers some other interesting rooms / areas. My recommendation, go there for a couple of drinks after dinner. Love this lounge!! We came in after walking downtown Carmel and spotting all of the wonderful dogs. I have a love for all things Doris Day, so the decor with all her movie posters, the charm of the hotel, and the 4 legged friends running around was really so fun to hang out in. Had drinks and dinner there tonight. Drinks: 2 stars. First round had to be sent back - had a Paper Plane. Bourbon, Amaro, Aperol and lemon juice...lots of lemon juice. My wife had Clover Club, which was also lots of lemon juice. Sent those back, ordered differently: wife's Aviation was good, my Sazerac was Absinthe heavy...very heavy. Cocktail program is great on paper, but execution was terrible. Food was 3 star. Wife's Sand Dabs were good, my Chicken Rotelli was just OK. Starters, Manhattan Clam Chowder & Endive Salad were good. Stopped over for a quick pre dinner drink. Had delicious glass of wine and perfectly sized and wonderfully tasting hummus plate. I loved all the dogs here. I love Terry's Lounge for brunch on Sunday! Their French Toast is thee best on the peninsula. The only thing I don't understand is why are they only open for brunch on Sunday's, especially being in a hotel! Doesn't everyone staying there want to have breakfast on Saturday too? Coco and Kevin are amazing and always take such good care of us. We go out to brunch every weekend and we are very sad if one of us can't make it on Sunday and we have to pick another place to eat on Saturday knowing Terry's isn't open.
