I chose Terwilliger Dental, from a list of providers that took my insurance. And boy was I pleased and happy with my random first choice! I read no reviews on them before I had chosen them, I still haven't read any until today! I called and made an appt, after not being seen at a dentist in 3 years, I'm from Seattle. Been in Portland for a year now, best move I've made when it comes to dentists and doctors here!! I called and set up an appt with Letty, she was amazing over the phone.. I felt extremely comfortable as we talked and she set up my appt! She was able to get me an appt for the next day! I came in the next afternoon, which I had to take my 1 month old daughter with me, her dad works until early evening so it was my only choice! Of course I get there and she decides she wants to wake up while in her car seat, I rock her myself until I get called to the back. Janna greeted me in the waiting area (I later on learned how much I loved her!) she talked me through what was going to happen this initial appt, of course baby starts crying in her car seat, which she then offers for someone to rock her while I get my x-rays done! Thank you, Rosie! For doing that even though she was still fussing! Then it was onto my cleaning, & Dr Hoang was welcoming and wonderful! She warned me of all of the times I'll be back for work done... LOL, I knew how bad my teeth were. But she didn't make me feel bad about it! She made me very comfortable! Her & Janna are an amazing team! All while I was getting my cleaning done, my daughter was so fussy, so they asked Letty the front desk (manager ? I think?) to rock her and soothe her, she came and did that with no problem! I am so blessed to have had the experience I had, these women are amazing! THANK YOU to all of you @ Terwilliger Dental! went to this practice multiple times then was referred to an endodontist who confirmed that they had misdiagnosed and sent me in for a root canal on a perfectly fine tooth. Each visit was impersonal and almost predatory as I was told that my implants needed replacement which turned out to be untrue as they also referred me to an oral surgeon. This place is a complete money pit. Extremely dissatisfied and misled by this practice. read more

Front desk was nice. The rest of the experience was pretty awful. The dentist was abrasive and didn't give me any breaks. She had remarked that my jaw popped and said it must hurt, then proceeded to force it open for ages without a little rest. I've got a lot of injections into the gums for dental work, but these HURT. It felt like she was trying to scrape the bone with the needle. The dentist and an assistant spoke to each other the entire time in Vietnamese, sometimes laughing. Denise at the front desk checked my insurance regarding coverage prior to a couple procedures. My insurance informed Denise that they covered 100% of the fee schedule, and Denise told Doctor Hoang and I that insurance covered 100% of everything. I went ahead with the procedures based on that information. My treatment plan states that insurance covers 100%. When the bill arrived it was significantly more than I expected or can afford. Denise claimed she was never told about the "fee schedule." But my insurance records phone calls, and documents them in writing, and it was shown that Denise was told twice in two phone calls prior to the procedures that 100% of the fee schedule was all they paid, and that they would send Denise the information. However, Denise never asked about the fee schedule nor attempted to get info regarding it. After the bill arrived, her story started with not being told about the fee schedule, and then when confronted by my insurance directly calling her, she said that it was all a miscommunication and she didn't know what a fee schedule was because it is rare. It appears to me as incompetence and/or dishonesty. And she has been rude and uncaring through this process, intent on hiding her mistakes and avoiding responsibility. I am on the hook now, considering legal help, but making monthly payments. read more

I had a temporary crown and when I came back for permanent crown the dentist started picking at the temporary crown and using the pick she dug into my gum line and caused me excruciating pain. I don't know why she didn't numb my gum, but I am telling anybody that reads this my experience there was horrible. I paid up front and then about a week later they called and said I still owed money for an x-ray? I paid it but there is no doubt they cheated me. This cost me over $1600. Please beware of their business practices. I had a root canal they misquoted my copay. Seven months later I'm preparing my taxes and noticed from my insurance company my copay should have been $300 less. I called the office, they told me they would look into it. Eight days later with no f/u call, I contacted them again and demanded someone get back to me immediately, They finally issued me a check for over $570 for the over payment. They refused to credit my card. Not only did they not inform me, there wasn't a credit on my account for the $300 copay error. Turns out I had an additional $250 plus credit on my account. This is money I've paid interest on my credit card. I'm done with them. Patient beware, always confirm with your insurace provider when getting services from them. 0/10 Worst experience I've ever had at a dentists office. I went in for a general cleaning and explained all of my concerns with my teeth and anxiety around the dentist. The lady looked at me and said "Anything else?" and laughed. When the dentist came in, they both worked on my teeth. I don't remember their names but they were two Vietnamese ladies one was older, and the entire time they made fun of me and acted disgusted by me. The younger one literally was laughing at me (and my teeth) the whole time, while I'm already in an uncomfortable position with my mouth wide open and two women standing over me judging me (they didn't know that I speak Vietnamese). They also seemed like they were in a hurry and didn't tell me at all what was going on with my teeth- how healthy they were, if I had any cavities, or even ask me to schedule my next cleaning. Will absolutely not be back here. Horrible service. read more

I really wanted this to be a good dental experience - I've had some bad ones and this place was recommended to me. I went in for a cleaning which went fine, but my dentist congratulated me on having no cavities - I knew I did. I said "really?" She reassured me but upon looking at my x-rays she saw four tiny ones. So I came back to get two of them filled. At my initial cleaning, I was not prescribed any anxiety medication for the cavities even though I admitted I was scared. Unfortunately my appointment started around 25-30 minutes late and things seemed rushed right away. She gave me Novocain shots which were pretty painful - I have lots of tattoos, piercings and regularly get my blood tested so I was surprised how much the needle in my mouth hurt. She started working on my mouth after less than ten minutes. The numbing had not set in, my gums still hurt from the injection and I was in pain right away as she worked on my teeth. I was also getting cold water splashed all over my face and dripping down my neck. I started crying and asked her to stop so I could go to the bathroom and collect myself - I was startled, in pain, and this triggered a panic attack which I had to subdue in the bathroom before coming back out. I told her I could not finish the appointment, and she hurried me off to the front desk to reschedule and get an anxiety medication prescription. The numbness finally kicked in when I was driving home so that was not fun at all. I noticed they prescribed me a medication I've had adverse reactions to in the past so I called to ask if they could prescribe a different one. The receptionist said she would check in with the dentist and call me back. She never did. So, I cancelled the rest of the work a couple weeks later and am looking for a new dentist. I would not recommend this clinic to anyone with dental anxiety. read more

This office cancelled me 3 times on 3 different days, one hour before my appointment each time. They claimed their hygienist was sick 2 weeks now. They wouldn't accommodate with another hygienist or a temp. I had to keep cancelling and rebooking transportation. They are unreliable, unprofessional and their business tactics are horrible. This was the worst experience I've ever had at the dentist. As soon as I walked in for my appointment, one receptionist kept saying that I shouldn't have canceled my appointment and then come in after canceling it. I told her this was my first visit, and I've never canceled anything. She got louder and louder and kept saying the same thing over and over again. This happened as soon as I walked in and was weird and awful! The dental hygienist was very nice and did a good job. But the dentist was rude to the hygienist! The dentist told the hygienist that she took too long on me! I have dental insurance FYI so I don't get why the dentist cared. THe hygienist walked me up to the second receptionist when she was done, and that other receptionist (different from the one that yelled at me) told me that she didn't have time to check me out, and I would have to come back tomorrow to be checked out! I have never heard of such a thing. The drama started as soon as I walked in. I really believe these people are racist. I am South Asian American and a lawyer. I don't have an accent or anything. I have been going here for a decade! Why do I keep coming back? They have a friendly staff and do a great job to make sure I'm taken care of. Dr. Hoang is one of the gentlest dentist, she will listen if you have concerns and will make sure you are comfortable. I've had all four wisdom teeth pulled and multiple cavities filled when I first started coming here. My teeth have been great every since. I recently got a referral from them to go to a Ortho up the street to get my Invisalign. They have helped me with my preventative care and have been continuously doing so since the day I became a patient. Read, read, read Yelp reviews before you choose a dentist. I'd actually gone to this dentist both times I lived in Portland, and she took care of my regular check-ups, no problem! The second time I lived in Portland I discovered her way of doing things had changed. Maybe she needed more money? It sure seemed like it. She told me I needed a root canal, which she was right, though I'd yet to experience any pain. As I was asking her about my options she injected local anesthetic, suggesting she do it then and there (By the way, it's illegal to be injected without signing the permission papers. It's considered assault). I said I wanted to see the papers I had yet to sign, the cost breakdown, and more importantly, I wanted a second opinion on the X-ray. I asked her to stop since I was just getting a check up that day and needed time to go over everything. She did stop and I was numb for a couple hours after I left. I didn't sign anything that day. She told me if I didn't get the root canal soon my mouth would blow up like a chipmunk, so she prescribed antibiotics. I waited a couple months and got a few opinions. Nothing scary happened in my mouth, but I decided to get it taken care of. I didn't even think to go to an Endodontist/specialist because she never discussed it, treating root canals like they were easy to take care of. Flash forward to well over $3,000 later for a routine root canal and crown (this is the out of pocket cost with my insurance, which is still an obscenely high amount to pay if insurance is helping), and she did the root canal, no problem. I was told that if she took care of my root canal I couldn't see another dentist (that was a weird and controlling statement). When I came back for the crown she said she ACTUALLY had to do the procedure again because she didn't get all of the infection. She did another root canal on the same tooth, then placed on the crown and sealed the tooth. THEN, after everything was said, done, and I felt relieved, she told me she COULDN'T get all of the infection and that I may or may not need jaw surgery one day if it spreads deep into my mouth. At that point she also realized she forgot to tell me to bring my mouthguard to fit the tooth and was going to have me pay another $300 for a new mouthguard. I couldn't believe it! And she must've known she did something wrong because she then said they would just give it to me for free. It took me 2 years before I could see another dentist again, and I've been going every 6 months of my life. The paranoia I've had around my mouth has been so severe that I heavily researched all the new information on root canals, only to find that root canals are associated with developing cancer or other illnesses later in life. There are over 3 miles of tubing per root, and it's naive to think the detrimental bacteria doesn't continue to grow and go into the blood over a lifetime. You want to find a dentist who can clean your infected root with ozone, remove the tooth and take out the periodontal ligament to prevent anymore bacteria from secretly leaching into the jaw and body (not seen on X-rays). Then, if you ever had your wisdom teeth removed, you want to have a dentist see if there are any cavitations that've been forming in those areas, and if so, have them treated with ozone and their periodontal ligaments removed, so you don't experience heart attacks or a suppressed immune system later in life, which can host other illnesses. If you need a replacement tooth, go with zirconium (it's the safest element to have in your mouth). I found my new dentist through Yelp reviews, and the reviews were accurate. From this dentist I was connected to a wonderful Endodontist who led me to the new knowledge about root canals and their long-term affects. Both practitioners mentioned reporting this dentist at Terwilliger Dental to the Oregon Board of Dentistry for malpractice, and were shocked by how much I paid for the procedure and crown. So much of our health is in our mouth, so read reviews and take the time to find someone you trust. I wish I'd done that years ago. read more

I came here because the reviews were great! But my experience was less than. The staff was nice, but the doctor was rude. I have a hard time with drilling and she had no patience for me as a client. She complained and said I need to take medicine before I come again. I wasn't pulling away or acting unreasonable I just put my hands up when I needed a break. After she was done with my teeth she just left the room, no goodbye, nothing. Extremely unprofessional and unwelcoming. I will not be coming back. She also wanted to do root canals on me! Which after reading some of the other comments sound like it's her go to! I was assured that my insurance was going to cover my simple dental cleaning. I come in and we start the cleaning, to say the least the technician was not qualified to do the job, again I brush it off, not 2 minutes after the equipment starts to malfunction and spray water all over my face. She does a sub par job of cleaning and after I complain the actual doctor comes over and she actually cleans again with another compound that according to her is more expensive and they don't use it that ofter. This is not even the worst part of my experience, two weeks later I get a bill in the mail of $333 because my "insurance didn't cover it" that they assured me was going to cover. Moral of the store make sure what they say will be covered from the insurance is actually what will be covered or you will be in for a surprise. Worst Dentist! I cannot believe this lady. She decides to start a partial root canal on my fiancees painful tooth. The following Monday, he's still in pain and inquired what the doctor recommended about it. She decided to drop my fiancee without any notice since she saw he has a lengthy prescription history for pain meds, and automatically flagged him as a drug addict. I cannot believe this profiling of her patient. He had a partial root canal for crying out loud, not to mention other partials started in his mouth that she pointed out were never finished. Showed up for a first appointment, couldn't fill out medication on paperwork because I could not remember the name. I got in and told them 2 things that were wrong and instead of checking both the dentist got sidetracked on other stuff like my medications being listed. I had already told them I would call it in once I got home but they were persistent they "needed to know why" even though they are for psychiatric reasons. My psychiatric diagnosis should not have any effect on dental stuff done and is unnecessary, I already know this. They also demanded to know my main physician which is understandable *but* I was between physicians at the time and could not list one, they instead wanted the clinic information which would have my files but I also notified them that the clinician I was seeing had quit their practice. The dentist did not even check one of the two things I had complained about. I had xrays done and I know I have a cavity, but I was not told about it or if it had gotten worse. The lack of communication and understanding astonishes me even having been there a single time I could not, ever, recommend this place. You get ignored constantly and the dentist does whatever she wants. read more

This is by far my favorite dental office. They do not judge you in anyway if you don't floss, or if dental hygiene isn't your #1 priority in your busy life. They are here to help you wherever your starting point is and make suggestions to help without being condescending. Brittney Lidstone, RDH is so sweet and accepting of all people. She made me feel welcome right from the start. The entire staff is friendly, welcoming, and completely understanding that life isn't perfect and they just want to help with your dental needs. The doctor can be seen polishing a patients teeth when everyone is busy so a patient doesn't have to wait, which is almost unheard of these days. Looking for a great dental office? At first I would have recommended this place in every aspect. It boasts a great location, a clean and professional setting, and an A+ staff of nurses and administration. But let's face it, as great as a place is, it's the doctor that makes or breaks the ultimate experience. As soon as I got my mandatory health insurance via OHP, things went drastically downhill. It was obvious that Dr. Hoang, knowing that my "poor" insurance had paid for the visit, did not care for my patronage any longer. Her treatment was rough to the point that she made my gums bleed she flossed them so hard. Every visit was like a reprimand for my limited financial choices (clearly her only concern is money). You know those little flosses/toothbrushes/whatever grab bags you get after your dental visit? They used to be decent, but after getting on OHP, what you get are no-name products that look like they were donated from a third world sweat shop. The worst part by far was my multiple visits to fix an old broken filling. It turned out I had to have a root canal on that tooth. Not pleasant of course, but it should have been an easy procedure regardless. After the usual spiel trying to get as much in profits as possible, I came back thinking I would have to pay for a crown. I was not even clear on what she would do or whether I even had to have the root canal at all, and only found out I did need it when I came back for my visit to repair the problem. I had to come back after that first visit to have one problem root fixed, making it a two-day procedure. Or so I thought. The day after my second visit, after my filling was in place and I was set to go, I was called back in because Dr. Hoang literally forgot to fill in one of those roots. The third visit in, and that brand new filling had to be taken out and everything started from SQUARE ONE, with the added bonus of not getting enough anesthesia and a lot of unnecessary pain. The doctor did nothing to remedy this aside from offering me an aspirin. Hours later, she couldn't even fix her mistake properly and I had to come back yet again, making this basically a total of FOUR ROOT CANALS ON THE SAME TOOTH. On top of that, and unsurprisingly, I got and mild infection on the gum due to this issue that she caused, and I had to pay for the antibiotics myself! I had at least 20 x-rays shot into my face for this procedure alone, and who knows what kind of damage that has done. And after all this, Dr. Hoang made it a point to continually lay the blame on me because of the smaller size of my mouth, so clearly the whole ordeal was my fault from the start. Like I said, I love everything about this place, and the staff is great, but I would never EVER go back to this place because of its client-shaming and sheer unapologetic ineptitude. read more

I cannot speak highly enough of the care and professionalism of Dr. Hoang and all the staff at Terwiliger Dental. I have been a patient for about 12 years, and have numerous issues, not the least of which being that my front teeth were broken as a child, so I have to have a composite buildup done periodically. Dr. Hoang is an artist, it is hard to trust your appearance to just anyone, and she does a wonderful job every time. She extracted my sons wisdom teeth, and always makes an effort above and beyond to make any procedure as painless and comfortable as possible. My eldest son has aspergers, and had bolted out of 6 different children's dentists, due to anxiety. Dr Hoang took all the time needed to explain, comfort, and work with my son, and was able to get his cavity filled when other dentists had told me he might have to be put under surgical anesthesia at a hospital. The office is clean, pleasant, and has thoughtful touches, such as prepasted toothbrushes, mouthwash, excellent magazines, tv you can watch while being worked on, a cool view out the window... it is plainly obvious that Dr. Hoang (and all of the staff) take great pride in what they do and the environment in which they work. And for the record, I am speaking as a single parent who did not have many resources--on Medicaid, but i have never once felt judged or treated as anything other than valued and important.
