We chose the Hilton Garden Inn because I have stayed at their properties in several states. This location was good overall, but a few things could be improved. The check in process was easy. We arrived in the evening, and Francine assisted us. I had trouble with my card, but she was very understanding and gave me options until everything was worked out. The hotel and our room were pretty clean. I travel often, and hotel carpets can look disgustingly dirty, but these carpets appeared clean and well maintained. The hotel allows pets, but our room did not smell like animals or have any other unpleasant odors. Our room was a nice size with two double beds and enough open floor space for a small air mattress if needed and permitted. The beds were fairly comfortable. I LOVED having a refrigerator and microwave because many hotels no longer provide microwaves in the rooms. There was no clothes steamer, but I always bring my own. The television also allowed us to connect to streaming services. The showerhead was the worst feature in the room. They should replace it with a detachable handheld showerhead. The sink also drained very slowly. I had seen other guests mention this before selecting the hotel, and unfortunately, I experienced it too. The drains definitely need attention. I requested a corner room away from elevators, ice machines, and heavy foot traffic, and the hotel accommodated me. The outside doors lock after a certain time for safety, which I understand. However, our key card would not open the door. We had to ring the bell and wait for someone to let us in. That sucked and was very inconvenient. They need to repair the card reader. The market near the front desk had snacks, drinks, coffee, espresso, and microwavable meals. That is convenient if you arrive late or do not want to leave the hotel. The Rooftop Bistro was very nice and comfortable, but it closed around 8:30. How do you have a rooftop that nice and close so early? It should stay open later so guests can relax and enjoy drinks. I ordered a salad with chicken, strawberries, and some type of dressing, and it was DELICIOUS! It cost around $27, but the portion was large enough to share. My daughter and I shared it, although I honestly did not want to because it was that good! Breakfast cost about $20 and worked differently from a traditional buffet. You placed an order for hot items such as eggs, potatoes, sausage, bacon, and oatmeal. Bagels, toast, croissants, fruit, yogurt, and juices were available separately. French toast, omelets, and other à la carte items were not included. The gentleman taking orders was very nice. Victor was GREAT! He explained everything, brought our food to the table, and made sure we had whatever we needed. Self parking was $15 per day, which was not too bad, and EV charging was available. Target, Chipotle, and several other restaurants and shops were directly across the street. The lobby was clean, and the hotel had conference rooms. A volleyball team appeared to be staying there, so it was busy, but I never felt like the staff was too busy to help. The housekeeping employees were also very nice. The pool was small for the size of the hotel, but I was extremely impressed by the pool lift for guests with mobility limitations. I travel often and had never personally noticed this feature at a hotel pool. It allows people with limited mobility to enjoy the pool with their families or independently. The hotel also offers hearing accessible rooms, which I thought was great. Other amenities included connecting rooms, free WiFi, a fitness center, and non smoking rooms. My biggest disappointment was the price. Even with our discounted wedding rate, the hotel was still expensive, and breakfast was not included. For the amount we paid, I wish they had offered complimentary breakfast. Overall, our stay was good. The hotel was clean, the room was comfortable, and the staff was helpful. The Rooftop Bistro, delicious salad, and accessibility features were highlights. The showerhead, slow drain, nighttime key card access, and early rooftop closing time need improvement, but we still had a pleasant experience.

We were able to check in early, which was a great bonus and made the start of our trip even better. The hotel is conveniently located just a 10-minute drive from UCSB. Our room was spacious and featured high ceiling (around 10feet), making it feel even more open and comfortable. It also included a mini fridge and microwave which was convenient for our stay. The property offers a swimming pool, fitness center, and an on-site restaurant. It's also close to plenty of restaurants and shopping, including Costco, making it easy to grab anything you might need. There is ample on-site parking, though it does come with a daily fee. Overall, this was an excellent stay, and I would definitely choose this hotel again the next time I'm in the area.

I arrived the night before the start of the diversity summit. The campus was well marked on the streets, though I did get lost trying to find my lodging accommodations. Slowing down as I drove my car, I eventually spotted a building matching the description I had. The workers were friendly and clearly directed me to where parking was for those of us attending the summit. I had signed up for the conference of my own initiative following attending a conference for the corresponding professions in March 2018 in Phoenix, Arizona. Finding parking that first night was my first sigh of relief I had made it. Then, walking my small suitcase towards the lodging building, I noticed a tunnel with lights running parallel to the tunnel entrances/exits up the sides and across the top of the tunnel. Pausing to take a look, someone on a bicycle rode through the tunnel and the lights blinked as they passed each strand. So cool. My lodging was comfortable, I was happy I had chosen to pay for everything myself in addition to choosing the summit myself. It helped build my confidence that I could call the shots in my own career. Summit sessions were held across the following two days in multiple on-campus buildings. Talent brought in spanned academia, national laboratory researchers, and people in industry. A few talk highlights included a presentation by a man from a company that had decided to pull his slides at the last minute for proprietary (intellectual property) reasons - he had to improv his entire talk. Another man, from my university (University of California, Berkeley) and a different department (Materials Science and Engineering) commented on how he hoped some day a Nobel Prize (corresponding disciplines: Physiology or Medicine, Physics, Chemistry) would be awarded to someone who cared enough about diversity to attend this diversity summit in advance of being awarded the prize. I enjoyed the on-campus meals (catered) we shared together as well. The weather was beautiful and we could watch an on-campus lagoon for wildlife. A birdwatching guide and binoculars had been provided in my room. All around, I had a lovely time.

The last leg of our trip brought us to Santa Barbara Airport. I had not been in the area for years…read moreand had never flown through this airport, even though I grew up in the area. When I tell you this airport is small, I mean SMALL! It is also extremely easy to navigate. You definitely do not need the same amount of time to get through this airport as you would at a larger one. TSA is only one floor up, and we got through security very quickly. Based on our experience, you could probably arrive about an hour before your flight and still get through without a problem. Of course, I would still follow your airline's recommended arrival time just to be safe. Getting out of the airport is just as easy. You only have to go down one floor, and once you walk outside, everything is conveniently located right there. The Uber pickup area is directly across the street, along with taxis and bus transportation. You do not have to walk a long distance or search around trying to figure out where to go. The beauty of flying through a smaller airport is how quick and convenient everything is. The disadvantage is that there are fewer flights, and they seem to stop fairly early. There are also not many restaurants or shops once you get through security. My main complaint is the seating. The seats looked very old and sat extremely low. They definitely need to upgrade them. I do not remember seeing charging ports near the seats, although I cannot say for certain that there were none. The gate areas are also very small. When several flights are boarding around the same time, the crowds and lines can spill over into the neighboring gates. That can become confusing because you cannot always tell which passengers are standing in which boarding line or even which gate they are waiting for. Everyone we encountered was helpful, and the overall process was still a breeze. For some flights, you do have to walk outside across the tarmac to board the plane. The weather was beautiful while we were there, but I can only imagine that walk being a little inconvenient during bad weather. If you need to travel to the Santa Barbara area, I think it is worth paying a little more to fly directly into this airport. To me, it does not make sense to fly into LAX just to save a little money and then have to drive all the way up while sitting in that LA traffic. Who wants to do that after getting off a flight? Overall, Santa Barbara Airport was small, convenient, and easy to navigate. The seats and gate areas could use some improvements, but it was still one of the quickest airport
