Martin restored a nearly four hundred year-old Ming pottery bowl that careless cleaners chipped. He did such an incredible job that I can't tell where the chip was even when comparing the bowl with a photo showing the chip. I was practically in tears when I saw the work. I then sent Martin my grandmother's porcelain clock that I damaged as a teenager in the 1950s. After all these years of hiding the clock, it is now proudly on display. In this case, it is possible to tell where the repair was done because the original gold leaf was fired under the glaze and that can't quite be duplicated. I have had Martin repair/restore over a dozen ceramic and glass vases over the past several years, and his work is best described as simply incredible. He's an absolute master at his craft, and I can generally not even identify the site of the original damage on the repaired/restored vase once Martin has finished the project. I believe Martin was the lead restoration technician for years at the highly respected "Venerable Classics Restoration Studio" in Santa Rosa, California, prior to starting his own studio (Tesserak Restoration Studio) in Sebastopol California. His prices are very reasonable, and the quality of his work is museum quality, to say the least. I have yet to find the project that is either too large (or too small for that matter) or too complex for Martin to be able to repair/restore, and bring the vase back to its original splendor. Whether the piece is a highly valuable collectors item, or a very personal family heirloom, Martin treats all objects with the same respect, and I cannot say enough wonderful things about the quality of his work. My only concern is that someday he's going to retire, and I can't imagine finding anyone better than him to do any subsequent repairs/restorations I may want to pursue in the future. read more

It certainly was my lucky day when I asked Martin to repair my beautiful antique Quan Yin sculpture. This was a very complex repair that had a broken base. He not only had to dismantle the base, but he had to make a molds for all the missing parts and then meticulously fill, smooth, paint and glaze everything. he did such an amazing job that you would never know that it had ever been broken. This is the second time I've brought a project to Martin at Tesserak Restoration Studio, and I have to say, he is a miracle worker! The first was a Japanese fisherman riding a bird whose wing had broken off. He restored the wooden base, repaired the broken wing, and even found a tiny bamboo stick to use as a fishing pole from which we could hang the fisherman's catch. More recently, I brought a beautiful brand new platter, the corner of which had broken in transport. Even though there were tiny chips in the break, he restored it so beautifully that now I can't even tell which corner was broken. And the repair was done much more quickly than he had estimated. Martin is a brilliant restoration specialist! I brought a miniature Paul Revere statue to him that had a small piece of the horses forelock broken off. The other platter had an edge that had been broken for as long as I've seen the platter used. He restored the edge of that as well, and you can't tell where the work was done. Martin not only fixed a complex break in a limoge plate, but matched a hand-painted complex pattern to perfection. This was a limoge plate, for which I had searched several years for a replacement. We took in four pieces, a ceramic bird, a ceramic horse, a glass tumbler, and a small blown glass figurine. Martin explained what he could and couldn't do, and actually turned down the glass figurine which he felt he could not help with.
