Ah yes, the "store of the future." The future apparently has no employees, no customer service, and no actual products. Just a bunch of glowing machines that expect you to do everything yourself like some kind of unpaid intern for a vending machine. Selection? If you like disappointment, you'll love it here. It's like they raided a gas station and said, "Yeah, that's enough." Prices are wild too it's cheaper to have Amazon hand-deliver it to your house on a gold-plated drone. Honestly, this place feels like a social experiment to see how long humans will tolerate nonsense before going back to online shopping. Spoiler alert: not long. Go to Amazon. Still a great store for art supplies, crafting, framing, beading, knitting & crocheting, artificial flowers, even a very small fabric section, plenty of seasonal sales, and a small sugary snack selection near the checkout counters. Self-checkout has been added and like most retail stores salespeople have been greatly reduced, but overall still many items needed for everyday crafts. read more

In the past I haven't been very pleased with the selection, stock or assistance available at Michael's, but I think they're upping their game, at least in Santa Rosa. Michael's has always been my go store for yarn, paper crafts, painting and holiday decor. I was thrilled to read that Michael's acquired Joann's brands. Yay! I can't wait for it all to happen. Recently when I was in the store, I saw the staff emptying shelves, moving sections, marking items down, moving racks around, pushing large cartons of items, etc. I felt bad when I had to ask for help finding an item that was moved, but I got the help I needed! I hope customers realize that just because the articles say Michael's acquired Joann doesn't mean that they are instantly going to be fully stocked with fabric, etc. It appears the employees are working very hard to welcome Joann's to their store. I had such a wonderful experience or should I say experiences at Michael's on Despite being very busy, I excellent and friendly customer service from Bella and are all such nice people and so helpful. They are quite knowledgeable. They give excellent customer service and all with a smile. What great attitudes they have and what good people they are! Framing Department doesn't/won't allow to cut mats in-house. Limited abilities there.... I know because I was transferred there from San Rafael location on Dec 26th, 2023 to HELP with the issues in their department. They always call other stores for help because they are not skilled and cannot keep up with difficult designs. I was written up for "insubordination" for cutting an "in house" Cotton Mat #12005 for a 90+ year old woman. 5 minutes of time. Every Michaels Framing Dept is supposed to cut mats for Quick Orders, yet I get written up for it (??) "Final Warning" and "grounds for termination". So Sam, the new "Framing Manager", told me to refer those customers to Helene-Framing Manager in Petaluma. Then I was written up by the Store Manager , Jay Johnson, for that too!! I highly DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS LOCATION for custom framing. Very sloppy work and inexperienced. And I have 45 years experience. They don't want to train anyone here as well. Michael's in Petaluma, San Rafael, Pleasant Hill ALL ... can do anything and with much more experience. Be warned: Santa Rosa "instructed me" to only sell custom mats they order from the Texas Artistree location, then shipped in--2 week lead times at 3-4x the cost !! Go see Helen in Petaluma or Debra in San Rafael... I trained to Debra's / Michael's Custom Framing Standards there for 7 months, 5 days a week. On top of 45 years experience in galleries and custom frame shops in LA and Larkspur while working full time as well. Just my 2 cents because they have been bullying me into quitting... so I have taken steps to refute their ridiculous claims with legal advice. Wish me luck!! read more

This place has only gotten worse. Came in for a standard online order pick up. The staff was slow and confused. They gave me misinformation about picking up my order and one employee who came over to help me then lied and said he didn't help me. Maybe he was concerned about getting in trouble about giving me the wrong information about my order, but the manager accused me of lying and saying that he said he never assisted me. I try to avoid this store at all costs, but I was in pinch and had to get supplies today. I hope they do something about the awful staff there. read more

I used to be a big fan of Michael's and may no longer be patronizing this location after my last experience which turned out to be negative with an online order I placed for yarn. Somehow the bright Michael's employee that put my order together couldn't tell the difference between BLUE yarn and LIME GREEN yarn (or just didn't give a #$%! and threw it in anyway). When I went to look online to see if they still had the original colored yarn, it said they were sold out. WTF? The female employee I spoke to on the phone turned very rude--will complain to corporate about this and will hope for some kind of resolution. --- Update: I contacted the main (800) Michaels customer service line and was treated very nicely and respectfully and this issue was resolved to my satisfaction, BUT it was clear that was not going to happen by talking to the local Michaels employee. Another thing to note is that the online order pickup button at the Petaluma location was disconnected (I believe intentionally by the employees). That is TOTALLY unacceptable and insane. Corporate should be made aware of how this store is being mismanaged and how badly customers are being treated--this should not be allowed to take place. read more

That was the creepiest most unnerving checkout process I've ever experienced! They've updated all the register's and unless you pay in cash you must use self checkout. It's completely with fault & is an impossible process to accomplish without asking for help! The gentleman watching over the checkout area was very kind and helpful, understanding people's frustration with how task oriented it is to simply input your phone number to get into your account. I only see this getting way out of hand as the cashless system gets worse & there are no more people employed. I'm definitely not happy, the experience was Biblical, in a VERY scary way! I will be contacting corporate to let them know about my extreme disappointment. I'm not sure if I'll come back and shop at Michael's ever again if this is how it's going to be. This is extremely dangerous trajectory to where America is heading! What's even worse, is this new system doesn't make it so that there's more employees around the store to help. The only reason I keep coming here is because they have craft stuff Joanne's doesn't. Otherwise, I would never come again. Half the products don't have price tags, the price check doesn't work, employee help is impossible to find and so much more. I found a spray paint that was perfect for my project, I pressed the help button, waited several minutes, pressed it again, nothing, asked a passing employee for help and he said he didn't have keys, he said he called someone but again, no one showed up. I gave up and went to the check out. The girl asked if I found everything alright and I told her no because apparently no one has keys for the cages. She seemed baffled and said she never heard a call for it... I told her it was fine and I'd go somewhere else because I had already wasted 10 minutes waiting. Went in about mid day. Pretty dead for a weekday compared to a weekend. However it's been quite a while since I worked retail but closing an opening is when most of restock should be taking place. There were so many empty spots on the shelves and boxes in the walkways. Definitely a major tripping hazard to customers. The couple of employees that were on the sales floor were too wrapped up in stocking that they ignored customers who actually needed assistance. Went in looking for a few craft ideas for a young girls slumber party and barely walked out with an initial journal for a gift. Guess I will stick to Pinterest and ordering on Amazon. read more

I stopped in here on a casual weekend day when I had some time to kill. I checked out their Christmas clearance stuff and browsed many of their sections. The isles were a bit untidy, though things seemed to be pretty well-stocked. Any areas with lots of kids-toy-type items were in an unsurprising state of disarray. When I stopped in the line to check out was actually short and the young woman at my register had a great, upbeat attitude. Overall a reasonable visit. read more

I had a super disappointing shopping experience at Michaels of Santa Rosa, today. I was frantically trying to piece together a home-made costume for Halloween, because a different costume I had ordered over a month ago (not from Michaels) never arrived and the company didn't notify me until Oct 29th. It's my daughter's first Halloween and we are doing a group costume so I needed to find some very specific things. After searching high and low for hours to get everything together, the only thing I still needed to find was a plain white baseball hat. I went to 3 different stores that supposedly had this item in stock according to their website, only to find out upon arriving that they didn't actually have the item. So I called Michaels in Santa Rosa and specifically asked if they could check whether they had this hat on the shelf. I was told that they did. I confirmed details about the look of the hat, sizing, and everything. "Yes, we have it. We'll set it aside for you." So I drove from Rohnert Park up to Santa Rosa - happy that I could finally put this whole costume fiasco to rest. I waited for 10 mins while everyone tried to figure out where the hat was. Turns out they NEVER actually had the hat. Whoever supposedly checked on it never actually checked, and though some sort of major communication breakdown was led to confidently believe that "Yes. It's definitely here." It's mind-boggling to me that this place is even able to function. They somehow managed to make an already crappy day even worse. read more

Keep in mind, you come to a corporation, you will get that corporate experience along with it. Sometimes, coming into Michael's I feel a tad overwhelmed. Not knowing where items are. Searching for help and customer service. After tracking down a live human with a red shirt on, I ask, "where can i find blankity blank?" Only to verbally told and pointed in the neighboring direction. As I wonder over to the direction i was pointed in, I find myself lost yet again, endlessly wondering the isles like an aimlessly lost little bo peep who lost her sheep. After grabbing my over priced item i can find for less on Amazon, I head up to the front check out which is a nightmare in itself. Good place as long as you don't need help with anything. In the last week, I've been to both the Petaluma and Santa Rosa Michael's. I couldn't find what I was looking for in the store, so ventured around the aisles trying to find someone to help me. Well forget that. Like all the mega-corporations these days, the stores are under-staffed and you won't find a soul around to ask a question. The one or two people who are on the floor are busy at the checkstands tending to the miles-long line of people waiting to make their purchases. Good news is, I went home, went on line to Amazon and found exactly what I needed in about 30 seconds flat. And with Prime, I got it in 2 days and with free shipping. So, one of these days if/when Michael's goes out of business, I'll be pretty deaf to their "poor me, we can't compete with Amazon" sob story. read more

Everyone working last night was extremely helpful! (8/16/21) We couldn't find any of the items because every store layout is so different and we hadn't been in this Michael's before. Additionally, it was also the evening and they were unpacking a shipment. I love that educators get 15% off all purchases of regular value. I can't stop thinking of how helpful the gal in the custom framing department was yesterday when I went in with assorted small paintings that I wanted to frame. I am sorry I didn't get her name but she had dark hair with fun colored highlights. She was willing to take the time to show me some options and help me with technique. I've been going in circles with these watercolors my elderly friend had made, largely because they weren't standard sizes and I wanted to try to use some frames I have already and supplement with matts. Anyway, she was just the guide I needed and today I have a wonderful new picture wall that I love, love, love, all because of her. Thank you so much. You are terrific! read more

Absolutely love coming here. They offer a lot of free classes as well as classes that really don't cost much. Sunday's are a cool day because they offer a one hour "coloring class". The staff is so friendly and make you want to come back if even to just walk around and explore all the great arts and crafts supplies without making a purchase. I did a curbside pick up and it was a terrible experience. I called and gave them my name and order number and after holding five minutes was disconnected. I tried to call back 4 times and someone picked up or so it slip under and I got disconnected. I had to get out of my car and show the person outside (exposing myself to the masses going into the store) my order number and still they could not find it! It took 10 more minutes to get it! Will never do a "curbside pick up again." Too many people allowed in the store. Very disappointing! read more

I was charged for the product and then received an email a day later saying item not available! What BS! They get you to pay for an item that is unavailable! I have no problem with this store but I do have a problem with a employee named Lauren. I have no idea what rank she is in this store but I was there two days ago and I was looking for a stuff to make earrings with and she walked by and I asked her kindly if she could help me find this stuff that I need to make earrings, I even told her I apologize if I'm bothering her, she looked as if she was annoyed with my question and continued to tell me that she has no training on helping that kind of situation. She even said that she doesn't care about losing business for this store. I asked her for her name and she got annoyed with me and told me to leave the store. I am going to continue to contact her manager and tell her that she is not a very good asset to the company and she also said she didn't care about that. I love Michael's, even if just to peruse. Today I was not amused. A young boy found an item he wanted to buy for his mom. There was no tag and no other same items in sight. The boy asked the cashier for assistance, making it clear he wanted to buy it. Instead, he was rudely instructed to check isle, and if not there, then, "they're all gone". This left no option for the boy to purchase the one he found. You call this customer service? :( read more
