I have a very complex case, so I saw Dr. Yen Nieman for a second opinion. She took the time to understand my case, to ask me good questions, and to answer my questions. I get an eye exam and new glasses every year. I have gone to Texan Eye for the past two years on South Mo Pac. I will be looking for another doctor. I have been trying to call and make an appointment for over an hour. I have been on hold forever, hung up on three times. Yes, I did leave a message for a call back. I've been seeing Dr. Watson for annual eye exams. She is always very thorough and kind, and gives me a Rx which always lets me see clearly.

My husband has received excellent service with Texan Eye and we found them through Blue Cross/Blue Shield Texas. Dr. Walters was very thorough. My husband has had one cataract treated and now onto the second one. Agreed, their customer service is a little slap dash, and you do feel like a bit of a number, but the doctors are good. I saw another recommended ophthalmologist in Austin and I was not impressed. We are sticking with Texan Eye for surgery. P.S. They could really use something more humanizing in the waiting room like a coffee machine. read more

Yesterday I had Cataract surgery with Dr. Julia B. Sargent on my left eye, wow what a difference, Dr. Sargent told me that I would see better that I had for years I thought yea right Dr. talk. Well she was right on and I am looking forward to having my right eye done on the 19th. I do not understand the negative reviews on yelp I started with the Bastrop office great service, then the main office nothing but kind caring people and great service then the surgery center also super sweet kind caring people. My wife and I have used TexanEye for 20 years or more. We have had annual check ups every year and have been pleased with the service and care given by Dr. Tom Walters and the staff. We have found that he is very concerned about our eye health over the years. I had cataract surgery last year and the results have been great. My wife had an issue with one retina that was discovered about three years ago and the follow-ups have been timely and consistent. While others have felt that the waiting room time was excessive, I would say that it is pretty typical for doctors offices in Austin. No one likes to wait, but I have never felt that it was an excessive amount of time. We will gladly continue to use Dr Walters and his staff to maintain our eye health. read more

The south Austin location is the absolute worse place to go for your eyes. I went there a couple of times and waited for 2 hours after my appointment time to finally be seen by the doctor. He over dilated my eyes to the point I could not read or go out into the sun for over 2 days afterwards. (I am refraining from using this doctor's name for a reason.) He also wrote the wrong prescription for my glasses! When I went back, I was treated very rudely by the staff and the doctor that re-examined my eyes never even introduced herself. After examining me, she left me sitting in the room, still never saying a single word to me. I finally grabbed my file and took it out to the desk to be checked out. It was all very weird. Since then, I have spoken to many friends that have gone to Texan Eye south and agreed that they will never return. I was examined by staff, which was great. Then, when I saw Dr Sargent, and tried to talk to her, I was met with a really uncaring, hateful attitude. I tried to tell her that I could not see well, with the correction she ordered. She was extremely rude, and condescending. I'm a nurse and deal with doctors all the time. I have rarely met one with such a crappy, hateful attitude. Going forward, I call them 3 times, and never got a call back. There are too many eye docs in this town, for me to deal with such a hateful woman. I sure wont be back. read more

I have never had a worse experience at an eye doctor. I went in for an annual check up so that I can reorder my contacts. I don't have any serious issues with my eyes other than just not being able to see at far distances. Of the 5 doctors/assistants/admin people I interacted with, only 2 were actually kind and welcoming. To top it off, my bill was $350!!!! And that was not including purchasing my contacts! I don't have insurance, however I have never spent more than $150 at an eye doctor in the past 15 years. You will NEVER have my business again. Absolutely outrageous. read more

I've no idea why there are all these negative reviews here. I went to Texan Eye over a year ago and had no problem. So after reading these reviews this time, which are mostly about supposedly bad customer service, I called up expecting a bad experience with the receptionist--which is what most of the bad reviews here complain about. I thought, "Geez, I must have not paid enough attention the first time, or maybe I just got lucky." But the receptionist was prompt, courteous, and efficient. It took me less than a minute to get an appointment scheduled at a good time 12 days from now, and she was able to immediately tell me when I'd been there before, as I wasn't sure. She wished me a good day. And I'm not a routine patient: I'm 63 and have had retinal tears in the past for which I've had laser surgeries. So I need a real ophthalmologist (not merely an optometrist, which is what most people see), a good one. Dr. Kristin Sargent had been recommended to me, and I found her just fine. I also liked how they gave me a script and told me I could get it filled anywhere. So I saved quite a bit of money by using replacemycontacts.com. All I had to do was photograph the script and send it to them online. It's been 17 months since my last exam because the contacts have held up so well, and I haven't had any problems. I was going to give Texan Eye 4 stars, but I think I'll go with 5 just to help counter a bit all of these catching reviews, which really mystify me. Texan Eye seems just fine to me! read more

I've had my eyes taken care of by the wonderful people at Texan Eye Care for close to 25 years. My primary ophthalmologist has been Dr. Tom Walters, who in the beginning saw me for my annual check-ups, later through years of wearing contacts, and then, to eventually having cataract surgery. His knowledge, skill and kindness through all these years has helped me to understand each step as we went along, and I have always appreciated his expert advice and care. At times, when I needed to come in due to an eye infection, one of the other doctors has always been able to see me right away, and these drs., including Dr. Robin Watson, were always extremely helpful as well. This review is specifically for Dr. Rhada Ram at Texan Eye. She sees our 3 year old for high myopia and we are incredibly grateful we found her as his eye doctor. She is extremely thorough in her assessment and happy to spend time educating parents. She also was willing to put my son on a relatively new treatment regimen that other eye doctors had not mentioned or considered for him. Prior to seeing Dr. Ram we had gone to another pedi optho in town in the Dell eye group and been incredibly frustrated by a half hearted, hasty exam, completely unwillingness to spend time teaching and answering questions about his condition. So we were super happy to find this practice as an alternative. Incidentally I got her name from a mommy friend who is a physician, and that mom-friend got Dr. Ram's name from colleagues at Texas Childrens where she was really well regarded. I'm inclined to think since she is recently out of fellowship she is more interested in the latest and greatest research compared to perhaps other providers. Note to parents: bring your own entertainment while waiting during appt (i.e. you will likely wait while kid's eyes dilate, etc). This practice is not geared to pediatrics at all - even though Dr. Ram has great bedside skill with restless preschoolers, there are no toys, no kid books in any of the waiting rooms or exam rooms. Hopefully as the pedi side of the practice grows, that will improve. read more

I would have gave these people a zero star but was forced to at least pick one. They do not know how to treat or talk to customers and have the worst service. How they are in business is amazing. They expect you to show up on time yet when you show up for a SCHEDULED appointment it takes them an hour before you are even seen. When asked if my insurance will cover the exam their answer is we cannot tell you until three days before your exam. Do not go here unless you like rudeness and waiting. read more

They have some great doctors but don't expect to see a doctor for at least 45 minutes. I went there for seven years because I wanted one of their doctors to handle my eye surgery. I always arrived early so I could have my paperwork completed well before the appointment. Regardless, It always took 30 or minutes before I was called to the exam room and another 15-30 minutes before I saw a doctor. The last couple of times I went I compared notes with other patients and always heard the same story. They are always overbooked. THIS PLACE IS AUFUL waited over an hr for my 7 month old apt..i finally left and not once while I was there did ANYONE come and say the dr is running late or ther was an emergency would you like to reschedule. If you have a choice of where you go for eye care, I recommend you DO NOT go to Texan Eye Care! Their inefficiencies are too numerous. They will schedule you an appointment when there is no eye doctor available. You will wait a long time in the waiting room. They will schedule an in house appointment for a procedure they do not have the correct facilities or staff to perform. They will call you two hours before your appointment to cancel, even if you have taken the day off work, or held your child out of school for the appointment. Whatever you decide on eye care, please steer clear of this disaster! read more

Before cataract eye surgery (Dr. Walters, both eyes) I always wore trifocal glasses and thought I was seeing OK. After surgery, I was amazed at how much better I could see, colors, clarity, detail, and I no longer wear glasses! When doing detailed, close-up work I use low magnification (1.25 power) reading glasses but that is it. It is not an exaggeration to say that the change in my vision has made an enormous difference in my every day life. The TexanEye staff has always been professional, courteous, and helpful. I strongly recommend TexanEye and Dr. Walters to anyone who is thinking about cataract surgery read more

I am giving a one star rating because that is the lowest I can manage. I waited an hour for 30 seconds worth of "service" in the associated eye glass center - where I showed up to pick up an already filled prescription and found 2 people waiting in front of me. One of the two individuals who work there left for lunch. The two groups ahead of me were somewhat complicated but it still took over an hour to serve them. then I got to pick up my prescription and walk out the door - 30 seconds!!! This place needs a better system or more people to run the shop. Ridiculous! read more

It was recommended to me to have cataract surgery and was referred to Texan Eyes. My appointment was with Dr. Walters. Through my process to have the surgery. I was treated very rudely. The doctor did the surgery on my right eye First. I didn't notice any change to my vision. Went in to do have my left eye done and asked Dr. Walters what type of lens he was going to use. His response was "what kind". I said what was the name of the lens. His reply was "if you want a name, call it Henry". He knew what I was asking. Through the months after surgery I kept complaining I could not see good. I had multiple prescriptions to improve my vision. But none of them helped. The last time I was in the office, which felt was every week, Dr. Walters held up 2 fingers and ask me "could I see that?" I said yes, then he held up his whole hand and asked if I could see that, I said yes. He answered "well, your not blind are you". Please take my advice and DO NOT GO IN THAT CLINIC NOR SEE DR. WALTER'S. He is the worst, the most rude and not a good doctor. As of today,13 or 14 months after the surgery, I still can not see well. I was able to drive at night before the surgery, but can not drive at night. After all this time and many specialists and over 10 new prescriptions, I still see worse now than before the surgery. I would like to give them a minus 10 star but am not able too. read more

I have worn contacts for 25 years and have had great experiences with the Dr.s, however this was by far one of the worst! I have gone to Far West Optical for 10 year until my insurance changed and went to this establishment. First of all, I waited 15 minutes until called by the assistant who was less then friendly. She ALSO conducted my eye-exam (I did not know they could even do this). Finally, shoves me in a room in which I waited 45 minutes until I went out to find a nurse to see what was going on. The doctor came in, looked at my pupils, asked me if my perscition was good from last year and sent me to the contact lens area. Not only did they not have my perscition (which they told me they would since my contacts needed to be tossed) they sent me out the door and told me they would arrive in a couple of WEEKS!!! Are you kidding me? Oh, and not to mention I was there for TWO hours and did not even have my eyes dialated since they were closing. I would rather pay out of pocket and go see Garth at Far West Optical then deal with these people who could care less about you as a patient or your vision. I do not know how they stay in business! read more

This facility is awful. I will never return. First of all, the waiting area was like a daycare, full of screaming, running kids. The medical assistant I saw had no idea what she was doing and said that after dilating my eyes, I would be able to work on my computer shortly afterward (my job involves heavy computer use). She was wrong. I mentioned this to Dr. L., who basically laughed about it. No one there cares if you miss a day of work because the assistant lied and told you that you will be able to work on your computer shortly after the exam when you are obviously not able to do so. To top it off, they are unable to email you a doctor's note indicating that you have blurry vision because of their medical assistant's blatant error. (My boss is in another state.) I ended up having to pick up the note myself and emailing it to my boss. This was an awful experience and a complete waste of time. read more
