I need to have eye lid surgery. They expected me to be at Seton at 5:00 AM. I have a muscular dystrophy. It would not be safe for me to get up in the middle of the night and go out to the car. I might fall. I would not feel safe in the parking lot either. Some always has to help me get out of the car. The appointment setter would not let me spend the night. I asked them to reschedule the appointment., and these horrible people did the same thing to me again. Now I have to find another doctor who will let me schedule this during normal business hours, which is 8 am to 5 pm. read more

After trying to find a good eye doctor for my young son, we settled at Texan Eye. We have continued for a little over a year simply because our insurance covers all but the copay, and we thought it would be better to monitor his eyes with the same doctor. Out of all the visits, we have never been seen on time, in fact, several times, we have been seen nearly an hour past our appointment time. The final straw,and the reason I refuse to go back now, is that our doctor, Dr. Dudek, who has been condescending to say the least, flat out accused my husband of lying to her (IN FRONT OF OUR BOYS!) He was not lying, by the way, but she was convinced that she knew better. I have not encountered anyone at Texan Eye who makes me want to stay there. read more

I see that most people have the same concerns I do about Texan Eye Care. This is my 4th year dealing with them. Needless to say, I have enough experience there to confirm this has been the same practice for the last four years. I believe this is somehow a fostered environment where the root begins with management and structure. My Complaint: The customer service attitude and behavior is really poor. Every time I call in I am placed on hold several times and hold for long periods of time every time no mater what day or what time of day. The service desk folks seem to hate their job. Never do I hear a kind or inviting voice on the other end of the line. Upon arrival to my appointment - I stand at the front desk watching the busy bees whom might greet me within 5 minutes, sometimes longer. Basically ignored for 5 or more minutes. Then, when I am actually acknowledged, again, I'm greeted with a more than unfriendly approach. Even the nurses who guide you down the hall seem unhappy. If they ask how I am doing, "IF", it really comes across insincere. You will be lucky if they say two more words to you beyond the technical lingo. Much less, getting a laugh out of them. The doctors are nice and professional, so I have no complaints there. But the overall experience is on a poor scale. I must reiterate: This has been consistent practice/attitude/behavior for the last four years. This year, I held an estimated total of about 45 minutes total to make my appointment one day which I was hung up on twice during that time period. I was told they were having phone issue when I rang another department. I was not able to get through that day to make my appointment. Then I called back another day and held again for close to 40 minutes for which I finally made my appointment. Unfortunately, something came up and I needed to reschedule my appointment. This brings me to today. I held for another estimated 30 minutes for yet another unfriendly voice. I could not get in that same week or the next due to conflicts in my personal schedule. So, I requested for the rep to just cancel my appointment, taking this as a sign, it's time to take my business elsewhere and I gave up. Clearly, after four years I don't give up on a place easily, but I felt it was time. I do not expect to be treated like royalty, I assure you; however, being that I spent many years in customer service in both the rep position as well as management, I expect to be respected as a customer. This place does not have much care or regard for their customers... as a patient, once you are in to see the doctor, you are respected as a patient, but not before, as a customer. I have not had experiences with other location, so I can't say if this practice is company wide or just this location (S. MoPac). But I definitely do not recommend this particular location. read more

Unfortunately, Yelp only allows you to go to 1 star and no lower. I'd rate it lower, if possible. When I moved to Austin, I didn't have an eye doctor, so I picked Texan Eye. I wish I hadn't. They are extremely inefficient and unorganized. You could plan on being there for an entire day just for an annual exam, due to the fact that the receptionists were never organized. They were more interested in talking to each other than helping the patients check in. It always felt dirty in their building. It never appeared that anything was cleaned and the waiting room was dingy and dark. The final straw, though, was when I had a bad scratch on my cornea last year. I was in an incredible amount of pain and was very sensitive to light. I couldn't open my eye. I called to get an appointment - letting them know that this was an emergency situation. I was told that they couldn't get me in for about 3 months - and that was iffy. I reiterated that this wasn't a check up - that I had an eye emergency. Didn't matter to them. Today, I switched all my records to Mann Eye. And I LOVE it! Clean and efficient. The people there seem to really care that I'm a patient. And, when I told them about my experience with the scratched cornea, they were appalled. They said that would NEVER have happened with them; I would have been seen immediately. Another interesting thing I found out is that the majority of their staff came to them from Texan Eye, because they didn't feel Texan Eye was a reputable practice. That says a lot to me. I would absolutely not recommend Texan Eye. And I've told friends and family to stay away from them. I sure as heck would never go there for any type of surgery or medical procedure. I'd be terrified of what would happen to my eyesight if they did anything other than a basic eye exam. read more

In the process of adjusting frames after purchase of new lenses, they broke the frames (previously purchased from another provider) and refused to offer even basic frames as a replacement. Today I had an appointment at Texan Eye on S. MoPac. I arrived on time and then waited in the outer waiting room for 15 minutes. Ok. Then I was called back to the little room and talked with a technician briefly. Then, she lowered the lights and left. I sat there for a full hour!! No one ever stopped by to inform me why the wait. Lots of staff in the hallway and the reception area, but no doctor. After an hour in the little room, I reported to the receptionist that I was leaving. No offer of apology was offered. No explanation. I think the doctors at Texan Eye are competent and friendly. Wish I could have seen one. I'll find another opthomologist. read more

I have only been going to Texan Eye for 10 months, but have honestly spent more time and money in 10 months than I have at my PCP in 4 years. My story is too long to go into detail, so here is the synopsis. #1. Took 3 visits to complete the initial eye exam that previous MD in Tucson did in one visit, and I pay a $45 co-pay each time. #2. Given the wrong eye Rx, and when Optometrist office called Texan Eye to clarify, call not returned after over an hour, so I left without new lens, because now I don't trust that it is the correct RX. #3. Billed for services that should have taken insurance assignment in full not once but twice. The second time I called them to make sure I really owed the amount and was told: "yes I needed to pay it". But when I received my insurance statement it wasn't included in my deductible. I did receive refunds, but it took many phone calls to them and my insurance company, and feel lucky if accounting calls you back after leaving a message. Sad. read more

I am a new patient and I was not notified that I had to have my previous optometrist's contact information so they can call and verify my contact prescription and base curve. I am still unsure as to the reason that has to occur after they have done their own exam. FYI, contact prescription cannot be given unless they can verify this information. And they do not measure pupillary distance (PD) which is needed for eyeglass prescriptions unless you are purchasing a pair through them. With many online companies offering glasses at a better price, I was surprised. I have always gotten this from other optometrists/opthamologists. Technician and Dr. Lewis were pleasant to work with though. read more

I have been to Texan Eye Care several times over the last 10 to 12 years. I recently decided to change to different doctor that my wife recommended. The difference was like night and Day. Texan Eye care is basically a meat market. You are treated like a piece cattle that needs to be processed through the facility. The staff seems disinterested. The waiting room is frequently packed with people. They don't have a clue what personalized service means. For the most part the doctors I have seen were nice and seemed efficient but did not spend enough time to find out about your lifestyle and specific vision concerns. I am now seeing a doctor with a small practice that really takes the time to get to know you. They ask very pertinent questions and do not rush you through. read more

I don't even know where to start. I have been wearing glasses since my late 30's and am now in my 60's. I tried contacts and never could wear them except for special occasions. My eyesight had been going down hill and my glasses were "wearing out" so I went to a "mall" eye doctor who examined me and said new glasses would not help. I had advanced cataracts. So, I went to the ones I had always heard were the best - Texan Eye. I saw the #2 doctor there and was scheduled for surgery. I elected the Restor lens which is a very expensive multi focus upgrade. About 6K more than the insurance pays. I make my living doing website work so my quality of sight is important to me. To try to make a long story short. I have now had surgery on both eyes and my eye sight is better than perfect at all distances. I could not have asked for anything better!! EXCEPT better service from this place. I told them in the beginning that I was having to liquidate assets in order to pay for this. I did not want to sell things if I didn't need to and need to know EXACTLY how much money this was going to cost me. The first eye they gave me an amount and it was fine. For the second surgery they gave me an amount and when I got there for the surgery it was $1,300 more than what they told me. There were not going to allow me to have surgery but finally relented and let me pay them the next day. Of course their waiting room are always full and everyone there could hear. I found out that other had the same problem and did not know how much it was even going to cost I think the doctors are extremely talented in giving people their sight back but there is a HUGE disconnect on the business side of thing. I would strongly caution anyone considering them to be prepared for this and question, question, question them about what the FINAL price is going to be and make them stick to it. If they miss quote then that should be their problem - not yours. My final surgery was over a month ago and they are still dreaming up new charges and sending me bills. read more

I was referred by my primary care doc for a diabetic eye exam. I filled out the paperwork prior to seeing any tech or doc, but did NOT authorize a $75.00 fee for a refraction test, not knowing what it was. I was coldly greeted by an assistant who did most of the exam, and spoke to me in a very angry sounding voice and , gave me orders to sit, open my eyes wide, etc. very rude! Then the doc came in, spent a very brief time with me, reviewed the prescription that an OD had written in Jan of 2013, and said she didn't think it was right, so wrote out a new prescription for me. When I went to check out, they said I owed a co-pay plus the $75.00 for the refraction exam----I replied that I wouldn't pay for that since I didn't authorize it, and that no onee had spoken to me about it. They found it was covered by my insurance, so I wound up paying a small amount in addition to the co-pay, but considered this VERY unethical. My encounter with this practice was very unsatisfactory---rude staff and unethical practices. read more

I have worn glasses since fifth grade, never could wear contacts. Two years ago Dr Walters did my cataract surgery and I'm amazed at my vision...LOVE it! Procedure was easy, but I can't rave enough about the lens replacements Dr Walters did. They mixed up my chart with another person with same first name. Went through nurse convo as if I was someone else then they realized the issue and took me out of room. Waiting in hallway. Asking my medical history in the hallway. My appt at this point was 40 min ago. Not apologetic. Awful experience. Then I ask when I will be able to be seen and they begrudgingly walk me to a room that already has someone in it and then take me to another room and shut the door so I am sitting in a dark room now 45 min after my appt time. My entire family (husband, daughter, parents, grandparents) uses Texan Eye. Excellent doctors and place! Dr. Dell did my lasik eye surgery in 2004, and my eyes are still the same as if I had the surgery yesterday (as of my last appointment this past August). She takes good care to explain things well, and has good bedside manners even with a 3 year old, and the skills to keep him focused. I am way less than impressed with their lack of professionalism. I called them originally, after going to an eye exam another in network provider. I wasn't happy with the single choice he gave me for cataract surgery for my sister, so asked a few friends. A couple said they'd had good experience with Texan Eye, we did not. When I called to "schedule surgery", I was not told that our first appointment was to "see if she needed cataract surgery." The doctor examined my sister and said "she needs cataract surgery." I told her we knew that, and that she was supposed to get surgery there that day, that she'd already seen an ophthalmologist who diagnosed cataracts. The doc said "I haven't seen her, and I have to see her to make the diagnosis." I told her had they told me that, we wouldn't have wasted our time paying for the exact same diagnosis from a 2nd doctor. She then said we needed to go to the office in north Austin for a pre-op visit. She said they'd measure her eyes and get the right lens- no mention that it was also where surgery would be performed. Friday afternoon that office had called to schedule surgery, so I called back today to see about scheduling surgery and told them I wanted it at the south office. They almost laughed and said they only do surgery at the north office. I asked why I wasn't told that in the first place, and the woman said they "should have" told me that (same thing the doc told me about what "they should have" told me about the first visit there. They wanted to schedule surgery at 8:15 am in north Austin- we live 1/2 between Austin & Dripping Springs. That was why I scheduled with the south office. I told them to cancel everything, so now we're back to square one. I am truly unhappy that they're so unprofessional and seemingly uncaring that they don't give complete information. It's like it's a "need to know." Well, folks, I need to know that when I call, I am getting someone who cares and who will give me complete information, including if we will have to drive an extra 15 miles in Austin morning traffic. If you're looking for a warm fuzzy experience Texan Eye isn't the place for you. I've been customer for 20 years, seeing the same doc the whole time and I'd be shocked if she'd recognize me at Heb. The place isn't about personal relationships. It's an eye factory with a vast maze of offices and lots of docs running to and fro. However everyone seems totally competent and friendly. So I made an appointment for my 79 year old Dad. He has an unconventional past. He has been having vision issues for MONTHS. Years really, with visits to several other ophthalmologists, various drops and ointments prescribed and little to no change. He just recently finally received a diagnosis of glaucoma. Great. So he's being treated. Two things: 1) Dr. Marquis, while probably he gave a thorough exam, was dismissive and patronizing in his interaction with Dad. He was short, acted as if he were being imposed upon, and seemed judgmental of Dad's past. This is entirely inappropriate for a patient to experience, no matter the level of the doctor's expertise. I am sure Dr. Marquis is highly skilled and well trained, but his bedside manner was rude enough to make us seek out a new practice for my father. They have a lot of physicians, and I am sure most if not all of the rest of them are plenty kind. Unfortunately Dr. Marquis made my Dad and his caregiver feel quite mistreated. I can't recommend. 2) And second thing, while it has ended up being covered eventually, initially Dr. Marquis prescribed an eyedrop that was outrageously expensive and gave no alternative or suggestions until I called the practice several times to inquire. Actually, I called Dad's Medicare plan and THEY suggested a strategy that may or may not work but at least they had the information. Cannot conscionably recommend. read more

6/12/14 I am still really happy with Dr. Keeland and my vision both in my glasses and contacts that she has prescribed (no small feat given that I now wear monovision, bifocal contacts and progressive lens in my glasses.) I think we have a great rapport: she does just the perfect amount of friendly, interesting chit-chat and then turns on the serious business. She gave me a few samples which I always appreciate having to try before I buy and this year she even gave me a prescription for swim goggles and explained the pros and cons of such goggles. She also said I might have luck buying them online and gave me the right number for my vision. (sort of like a reader "prescription". I am thankful I found her! The office also has improved some of their customer service, assembly-line feel or maybe I'm just happier now that I can see. (I still get the earliest appointment possible.) Way too business-like and non-caring "care" from the doctors... I brought my 11 year-old daughter here and we were treated like a number. The opthalmologist (Kristin Sargent) never introduced herself as a doctor or told us what she was doing, or why. She seemed mildly annoyed that we had any questions and offered no discussions of options or any other useful information. We came here via referral from a friend, mosly based on Dr. Dell's name recognition, but would not recommend this experience to anyone. read more

The Bastrop office for Texan Eye has NO customer service skills. The OD was friendly and knowledgeable. But, the staff was poorly trained in customer service and attitude. They will not answer the phone, but want you to leave your phone number for a call back. After several hours of waiting for that call back, I am looking for a more reliable eye care service. If you ever do manage to get an answer, they put you on hold and leave you there. If I had an urgent call for the OD, I would never be able to contact him. The Rx I was given was sent to the wrong location because I printed Walgreens (in block letters) on the instructions, but Texan Eye staff thought it said WalMart. read more

If you are looking for good customer/patient service, DO NOT go the the Texan Eye Center at 1700 S. Mopac. I have never been treated like this in a doctor's office. I went in for the first time for an annual eye exam and that seemed okay other than the doctor did not provide me with a prescription. I then called their office 3 times and was promised all three times that I would get a return call the following day. Then when I couldn't get a response about being provided a copy of my prescription, I went into the office, told them my phone experience and finally was given a prescription. What I still don't understand is how the doctor provided a prescription when he was unable to accurately exam my left eye. When I asked for an explanation, the doctor finally called a week later and left a message saying that he would call me back at some point in the future. I'm still waiting. read more

I would give a negative star if possible!! First Yelp review ever for me....I read them and generally agree. Dr. Douglas E. Lewis is Absolutely the most condescending, rude, obnoxious doctor I've ever had the displeasure of being around! Oh and the incorrect diagnosis is just a bonus! the Yelp reviews pretty much sum this office up, I will never go back, and will tell everyone my experience, Stop giving this office business, it's clear they don't value or respect their clients. If you're not getting LASIK, you're made to feel that your are wasting their time by being there. To top my experience off, we arrived at 3:30 for an appointment, waited a long time in the waiting room which was almost empty, walked to the check out counter at 5:06. They had already locked the doors, made a extra loud voice announcement that of "here are the last ones"!! And then the female selling frames said in front of us....."I don't mind staying late for people if they buy 2 pairs of frames" IT WAS 5:06! The check out girl was less than friendly, the only nice employee encounter was the guy who walked me back to the exam room. I have a very complex case, so I saw Dr. Yen Nieman for a second opinion. She took the time to understand my case, to ask me good questions, and to answer my questions. We now have a plan that could avoid surgery. I'm very grateful for her expertise and patience! At the appointment desk, Shelly was fantastic. My only complaint is that it seems difficult to get through to the main number -- but you can leave a message, and Shelly did get back to me. read more

Abysmal customer service, and treatment that is just this side of incompetent. The receptionists are rude and unhelpful, not to mention seemingly ignorant of even the basics of medical terminology or language skills above the fourth grade level. When words like "retinal" and "cornea" stump a receptionist at an ophthalmologist's office, something is wrong. The doctor I managed to get stuck with has made my situation degenerate steadily with every intervention. Even the specialist I saw was not extremely helpful. When an emergency condition presented itself, the receptionist was willing to make an appointment for me two weeks from now. I think I'll take my eyes and my money somewhere else. read more

Terrible staff. Was rescheduled for the 2nd time due to the office and doctor's conflicts. Typically if the doctor cancels your appt., the patient should have priority for the rescheduled appt., the staff should do their best to work the patient in, OR, the office should recommend another doctor who is available - at the least. BUT Texan Eye staff couldn't tell me one other doctor that specialized in my common eye disorder. Nope, Not at Texan Eye, they are completely unfriendly, unhelpful and make zero effort to assist patients in any way outside of their required phone calls. read more

I can't vouch for their doctors, but the people who run this place are equally rude as they are incompetent. They've messed up my prescription multiple times, written the wrong expiration date (which was in the past), and continually been terrible with customer service, and yet they treat me like I'M the idiot. I have never been so frustrated in all my life. I am a tenacious sort so I kept thinking, "this is going to get better......or candid camera is going to pop out any moment".......needless to say, neither happend. No apologies, no accountability, no customer service. I couldn't even get a call back. Between getting transferred into la la land, discounnected or someone saying my chart was not merged with a visit from 2005.....whatever......
