I visited at their original location several times and the new location as well. I heard recently that they changed pricing per pound with some items marked with a price. So, I was excited to check it out again hoping to get a pound of old photographs as I thought their prices were expensive previously. I was barely greeted by someone working there in another room, and then saw lots of items with prices marked, so I wasn't sure how anything worked... no signs that I saw explaining nor did anyone there. I could have asked, and might have, but the smell of cat pee was so strong I had to leave. I was not going to risk buying anything that I might bring home and still have that awful smell. Very cool place to find recyclables for turning into crafts, art, etc. they have a little bit of everything, from doll parts, to fabric, to glass bottles, and more. Antique shop meets thrift store meets craft store! There is also local artwork and jewelry on display for sale. The staff is super friendly and helpful! If you have something to get rid of, that could be used for craft supplies, consider donating to them. read more

This place is incredibly unorganized, and the prices are completely ridiculous. I'm pretty sure that most of their merchandise was donated to them or they bought for very cheap. Unfortunately, everything is way marked up! This place is cool to visit if you just want to look around, but to get this stuff for the right prices I would recommend looking elsewhere. read more

one of my favorite places to go! this place speaks to my inner hoarder! the first time I came to TAA was because i needed a lot of toilet paper tubes for a class i was teaching. i needed about 180 of them to make binoculars. I LOVE~LOVE~LOVE The Asylum & the "Rude".....NOT, manager! LOL Ramona & Jennifer are both a HOOT & the shop is full of TOTALLY COOL TREASURES! I drive up there atleast once a month, if not weekly all the way from Texas City. OMG, no one was at the register??? What has this world come too? If nothing else, yell out "I'm ready to check out"! Heck, I walk in the door & yell "Honey, I'm home" & we are always laughing across the store. Even my 20 year old son & hubby enjoy going there. Considering these ladies have opened a place for things that would be in our land fields & for people like me to find cool art treasures everytime I go in, it's ok if they aren't at the register 24/7! Besides, it's not Target or Walmart and someone does have to sort, clean, organize & display everything, plus the day to day things that go along with running a shop & organizing classes. So for the person who can't wait at the register or speak up, STAY HOME cuz that just means there will be more goodies for me & my friends to buy!!!! We went exploring yesterday in some of the places I'd heard about but just never seem to make it into. Texas Art Asylum was filled with lots of odds and ends and craft hoarders material. This is a great place for people looking for forgotten materials to use in fabric arts, including pieces of material, some on bolts, needles, buttons, tons of yarn, latch hook kits remembered from childhood days. Also, the crafting teacher etc.. can pick up tons of bottle caps and baby jars sand, and clay without having to conduct a donation drive among their students. The place is grungy but not too disorderly I found most things grouped together and just couldnt' get my fill of exploring. What did I like the most,that costumers will too? If you have an inner steam punk character inside needing accesories to break out this is your place. A must, must, must see if you love creative repurposing! This place rocks! An amazing amount of creative detritus (and I use that word fondly) and incredibly well organized. I, personally would be ok even if that was not the case but it def makes it easier to process it all, especially if your time is limited. My hat is off to these guys! read more

I went here recently as a special shopping day with my little brother since I'm leaving for college soon (he's a little over a year younger than me). We walked in and were met with a fascinating barrage of odds and ends everywhere. It was really overwhelming since I've never come into any type of store like this, but I'm glad I did! Once I got my bearings, I was sucked in by the intrigue of just the wacky stuff you can find there. I'm an artist, so I was mostly looking for objects to bring home and draw along with some interesting art supplies. I was thrilled to find a tiny sketchbook with nice thick paper along with some bottles and jars to bring home. My brother got a few records. We were surprised to see the cats saunter in about midway through our excursion, but it was a good surprise, since we're both cat people. Overall, the trip was fun and the prices (as far as I can tell) seemed fair. My one complaint is that there didn't seem to be any staff anywhere for the majority of the time. We waited at the register for about five minutes before anyone wandered by to ring us up. Maybe there should be a bell at the desk or someone just assigned to be around when it's time to ring folks up. Other than that, it was a really fun place and definitely a hidden Houston gem! This is a really neat place with tons of great "stuff" for crafters...BUT honestly both times I have been there the employees came across with a very snobby attitude and the prices where really high. No bargains or good deals here. I felt like I should have worn my highest end jewelry and clothes to shop at a place that is like a wonderful attic full of "junk". Texas Art Asylum is a friend to artists. Jennifer and Ramona are supportive and good to the Art community here in Houston and have shown kindness, generosity and support to local artists and artisans. The shop, is amazingly organized for how many items that you find in the little warehouse space. They are constantly working hard to keep up with the interesting and hard to find craft items. I can can say I was blessed very much by these two women and touched by their kindness to those in the community. I myself was given a huge discount on some bulk items for a large-scale project that I would not have been able to afford supplies otherwise. They were willing to work with me, and I left feeling cared about and very thankful. I hope they continue to be as reasonable and awesome as they have been in the past because Houston needs more people like that...totally irreplaceable, and a artist or craft person's dream especially those looking for vintage or slightly used items at a reasonable rate. read more
