Dinner was so good, we came back for breakfast! I tell you, went camping at Lake Whitney State Park and arrived kinda late-ish after dark but weather did not lend itself to outdoor cooking. Sought a local place to fill our belies and found this little gem. Had their fried fish and shrimp special for dinner. Their portions were generous and fish and shrimp super crunchy while still flavorful - the best of both worlds, really. The next morning, after still thinking about our dinner, decided to skip making breakfast ourselves and went back to this cafe and try their options we saw on the menu the previous night. Boy, glad we did. Again, their portions were generous and food equally as delicious. The wife had the Lone Star Haystack and I had the pork chop and eggs. What can i tell you? We both loved our meals. Everything was great! And let me tell you, this is one of the friendliest places around. Service was awesome and all their staff is great. Took a trip through here to grab some plants. Stopped in because a few socials had some decent reviews. This is a very small town and I believe this may be the only cafe around. I could be wrong. On first appearances walking in it seems very small. Tho to your left there was 2 other sitting areas, seating was fairly quick. It's country, designed so, it's a small country town full of ranchers and country folk, there were what seemed the occasional lake goers. Staff was friendly. It was super busy, after church rush, food took a while to get to us. Tho in all fairness, we also took a while looking at the menu. Menu is American traditional country food. Cafe burgers, breakfasts, steaks, catfish, etc. Wife and I had the Hog Burger (bacon cheeseburger) and the Bodacious Burger (double Pattie's with bacon and bbq sauce). Both were really good. Good flavoring. The friends fries were crispy. Wife believes they were blanched. The pies, they have a big menu of pies and cakes, but be forewarned, they make them daily so if you go later, the choices will dwindle down. The key lime was great. Didn't have the green coloring like you'd normally see. Doesn't need it really. Wife had the Chocolate Meringue pie. It was good, but the chocolate was super rich. Overall, really good fare. Oh my! Customer service was terrible! The pies in the case looked days old. The older woman at the front counter acted like we were a huge inconvenience, and she was overwhelmed by a takeout order. They had very limited drink selection as well. They were out of many items. We were visiting and will NEVER go back. Oh and adding lettuce and tomato to a kid's burger is also a major problem too. I came to Texas Great Country Cafe because of the great reviews. So I had the Chicken Fried Steak with Mashed Potatoes, Green Beans. Mashed potatoes were good, green beans were good, Chicken Fried steak was as tough as they come. Batter was good, but the meat was anything but tender. If they had run the meat thru a meat tenderizer just a few more times, it may have been better. While I really liked the gravy, the steak was just a bit tough. Had a piece of Chocolate Pie that was also very good. l would come here again, but would order something different. read more

They were very sweet, our waitress was Ellie! We came in 2 minutes before closing we didn't know they closed at 8pm Apple Maps said 9pm! We visited this cafe after five days of camping at Lake Whitney State Park. We were all packed up and ready to travel home but needed lunch before getting on the road. I searched on Yelp and this was the first restaurant that came up. It had great reviews so we thought, why not?! I'm really glad that we did because we had a wonderful experience. When we walked in we were greeted and seated immediately. Our waitress, Rachel, was super nice. She took our drink order and left us the go over the menu. They had plenty to choose from as well as several lunch specials. I decided on the Chicken Fried Steak lunch special and my husband chose the Bodacious BBQ Burger with Onion Rings. We also had our children with us. One of them order cheese sticks with marinara from the appetizer menu. The second one chose Chicken Bites with French Fries from the children's selection. Our oldest daughter chose the Patty Melt and Homemade Chips from the regular menu. We were all very pleased with our food. It came out very quickly and everything was hot! My Chicken Fried Steak Special came with two sides and cornbread or rolls. I chose fried squash and mashed potatoes with cream gravy. Just a side note, their sides change daily so you have to ask your waitress what they are because they do not list them on the menu. When she asked if I would like cornbread or rolls I told her I would like one of each and she was more than happy to do that. My steak was very good! Hand battered and tender. Both sides were very nice as well. My only issue was that the cornbread, that happened to be in the shape of Texas, was a little dry. Other than that everything was great! Before we left all my kids decided that we definitely need to come here again the next time we are traveling through Whitney! If the kids approve you know it's gotta be good! read more
