    Sauly Burger
    Abbie w.

After RAVE reviews from friends, we decided to finally give Sauly Boys a try with takeout on Friday night. We got two burgers, the PB & J burger and just the classic burger with a side of Sauly fries. The food was incredibly underwhelming. Below underwhelming. Our burgers were FREEZING cold despite getting there right at the pickup time (they weren't waiting out) and our fries were wet and cold. The Sauly Sauce was sour tasting. The service we received was less than notable and unfortunately did not make up for the lacking taste of the food itself. The restaurant is cute inside and very clean. There are a few factors that would make us try Sauly Boys again, though. It was Easter weekend so I understand they may have been short staffed, and also maybe the food would be better if we ate in the restaurant. Due to the glowing recommendations of this place, we will probably give it another go and hopefully have a better experience.

Came here with Mom for the first time during Arts Fest. Wasn't sure what to order but was attracted to the Spicy Chicken Sandwich, so that's what I got with fries and a Frozen Lemonade. Mom got the Wednesday Chicken Basket Special. The sandwich was tasty, the use of a thigh instead of breast was a great idea, it was so juicy! It also had pickles, lettuce, tomato, and jalapeño mayo. The fries were just....perfection. The best fries I've had in a while. The Sauly Sauce was different....can't place all the flavors. The restaurant was so cute, perfect for people watching, and the letter tiles on the table gave us the chance to play Bananagrams while we waited for our food. The staff were all pleasant! And they seemed to get along, which is a sign of a positive work environment, imo. Minus a star because as good as the chicken sandwich was, it was not spicy, and that's what I was looking for. Will probably come back to try a burger (and get some more fries!!!)

I almost gave this place 3 stars but I'm always generous in my reviews. Probably 3.5 based on price and portion size. One peculiar thing: the cheese was not on the Sauly Burger. ( Remember that controversy?!) The meat flavor was really good and the Sauly Sauce was pretty tasty. Ingredients tasted fresh and the branded Sauly bun was a nice touch. The frozen pink lemonade was pricy at $5 for 12 ounces. It was tasty and refreshing but I don't think it was worth the money. $17 including tax and tip for a burger and 12 ounces of frozen drink makes me think this is a one and done....unless I'm here on a Monday for the $7.99 burger and fries special.

Pretty good burgers here. It's certainly not the best burger I've ever had, but still very, very good. We got two MexMix burgers ($9.95 each) and fries to split. The fries themselves were also good, but I wasn't a huge fan of the "chili" sauce they put on top. I felt as if the chili may have been from a can, and it was lacking the right amount of cheese. Overall, it's overpriced for what you get - $32 for two people to eat. But still a good burger. Solid 4 stars.

No lettuce, tomato or nothing, just dry...

So I really didn't expect this but no good. I ordered the Sauly burger and decided on the double patty. And I asked for caramelized onions instead of raw. Also got a small fry and Cajun sauce. I get my order and the girl took back the wrapped burger and asked the people in the back to put the second patty on.... guess they forgot. So in the mean time waiting for the second patty, my burger sat there and got cold. I said ok whatever let's see how it is.... Then I get home (not even a block away) and the burger is just beef patties and onions and cold as hell!!! Gross and unbelievable. I feel like the patties were made and sitting on the side of the grill, not made to order. The fries were good but, so are any places fries that make fresh cut. Maybe it was just a bad experience, but I spent $18 on a burger and fries and getting that... not likely to waste my money again!

    Rocket Burger! So good!

The burger was that good. Because I want to end on a positive, let me start with negatives: the fries were okay. Normally these are a side dish not worth mentioning but this restaurant makes them a star with a fry menu. ( I humbling suggest they try frying in beef tallow to make it a whole other fry experience). The other critical comment is my French onion soup (on take out) was really cold and we weren't late nor (but for the fries) anything else cold. To give you reference, I microwaved for 1 minute and was still cold and did another 1:30. But it was delicious. Now, why 5 stars? The burgers. My son and I both got the Lancaster burger with horseradish mayo on the side and substituting wagyu. It was heaven. It was perfection. We still think and talk about that burger and any food that makes you miss is worth 5 stars!

Parking is on the street, in the nearby garage or in the few spaces around the adjacent businesses. The interior is like most FG's, simple, red & white with bags of potatoes and fresh peanuts. I've always been a fan of FG's but with a lot more "fresh" fast options opened, it's dropped off my radar in recent years. For the uninitiated FG's is unique in that the burger is a fresh, never frozen 100% USDA beef, ground in-store daily. They are hand patties so they come out fresh and juicy wrapped in tinfoil. FG offers other fresh ingredients and the standouts are the fresh-cut fries and tasty buns =)! They also offer a bottomless supply of unshelled peanuts for free. On this day, I stopped in for lunch and ordered a "little" cheeseburger with fries and a drink. You can order the "little" which means 1 patty and saves you a few dollars. Personally, I'm not a fan of the 2-patty burgers. As you'll realize this place can be messy and the 2-patty sandwich complicates things a bit. Beyond that they give you numerous ways to customize your order but I typically go "all the way" -- sans mushrooms. Today's visit was outstanding. The burger and fries were fresh and tasty. I'm usually not a fan of the tinfoil (over waxpaper) but FG likes to lock in the heat. Sometimes the sandwich comes out smashed down. This would be a 5-star establishment all day but due to costs (around $18 for one person) and past inconsistency, I've knocked them down a notch. That said, State College has performed well the last few visits!

I don't drink alcohol so I can't speak to their bar or other food. 5/5 Food: where to start with the burger- its thick patty has a great crisp outside and medium inside and is graced by nicely cooked bacon, lettuce, tomato, cheese, and a proper amount of sauce. The fries are classic, semi mush-semi crisp fries with coarse grained salt. The meal with a delicious burger that outdoes any other I've had in state college, even those that cost close to $20. Walking out the door, the meal (fries, burger, drink) cost 8.05, and I was happy to leave a larger than 20% tip to make it $10 even. I challenge you to find a better burger in state college, regardless of price. Honestly, my MBA-trained senses obsessed over what their business model might be and I'm hoping that it was providing enough for the owners and staff. 3.5/5 Service: Friendly. It was really busy when we were there and it was a tad slow, but we also had a group that came in at different times. 4/5 Ambiance: nice-ish college bar inside, clean bathrooms. Only complaint is that the booth table was too tall for the chairs, I felt like I would have been better suited to kneel to eat my burger than sit (I had one friend who did kneel to meet the height of the table) Tl;DR Excellent burger; confusingly great value.

The atmosphere hits you right away. Dark wood, old school charm, the kind of place that feels like it has stories in the walls. It is cozy, a little dim, and exactly what you would expect from a spot celebrating a century in business. The menu is not huge, but it does not need to be. It leans heavily into comfort food, with plenty of sandwich options, but enough variety that most people will find something they like. Prices are fair, nothing over the top. I started with the soup of the day, a sausage gumbo with rice. It was flavorful and satisfying without being overly spicy or heavy. A nice warm up, especially on a rainy day. For my main, I went with Bobby D's famous beef chili topped with cheddar cheese and green onions, served with cornbread. It came out in a cast iron skillet, which was a nice touch presentation wise. Portion was solid, not massive, but definitely filling. The chili leaned a little sweet, which I personally enjoyed, with just a mild kick of heat and a lot of flavor. The cornbread was excellent and tied everything together. This is not a fancy place, and it is not trying to be. It is a comfort food spot that knows its identity and sticks to it. Great for a casual meal, especially if you are in the mood for something warm and satisfying. I would absolutely come back again.
