Solid burger place with decent prices and specials. They dont pull punches, its a burger, hot dog, chicken and fries. Small menu but they do it well. We stopped in on a state college trip and oddly a lot of places were closed this Sunday. This was one of the few places open and located in what I think is the old Jersey Mikes building. Entered and were greeted warmly and had our order taken. Place was decently busy with a lot of to go orders. Got our order fairly quickly. I just got the basic burger special they had that came with fries and a drink for $10. Solid deal in my opinion. We've been back a few times and this place has become a staple of our trip. Since BRGR went out of business this is one of the few places we can get a solid burger and fries. read more

We had a great time here! The reviews were a little lacking so I wasn't sure what to expect, but my husband and I LOVE a good burger and fry place so I was willing to try it out. We stopped by for lunch with our toddler daughter while in town for a sporting event on a Friday. It wasn't too busy, but the staff was very helpful as we noted it was our first time there. We got a few hot dogs and chicken tenders with french fries. The chicken tender platter my husband and daughter split came with plenty of French fries so I'd definitely compliment the portion size of that. The hot dogs are about average size, which was maybe a little smaller than I expected due to their prices. Everything was really good and I loved their Sauly sauce that came with my meal- I would buy a bottle! There was plenty of seating that day (although not a football weekend.. I bet it gets packed!) and we didn't feel rushed while dining in. The shinning star here was the super kind people who were so patient with us and sweet to our little girl. The food is alright, same you'd expect at any "fast burger" restaurant. Most of their options are fried, pulled from a freezer. Sometimes too salty, sometimes not salted enough. But my real gripe with this place is the service. I've been in there a few times during football season, and can forgive long wait times when they're packed (I mean they work hard). But their service in the summer is below average at best. It seems the younger guys are working harder than Sauly (that might be his name, the bigger guy). He sits around talking loudly about crude topics, giving rude looks at customers waiting, and has a video game controller out. I'm trying to teach my kids the values of hard work, could he at least do it in the back? Look, the place is a little overpriced, fine. But it's somewhere I liked taking my family to. But this manager (I think), or the guy there the most, is really not customer-service friendly. Five Guys, Irving's, even Big Deans...all right down the street. For the same price or less, you can have a more pleasant experience than a grouch and college students who don't exactly know what they're doing. read more

After RAVE reviews from friends, we decided to finally give Sauly Boys a try with takeout on Friday night. We got two burgers, the PB & J burger and just the classic burger with a side of Sauly fries. The food was incredibly underwhelming. Below underwhelming. Our burgers were FREEZING cold despite getting there right at the pickup time (they weren't waiting out) and our fries were wet and cold. The Sauly Sauce was sour tasting. The service we received was less than notable and unfortunately did not make up for the lacking taste of the food itself. The restaurant is cute inside and very clean. There are a few factors that would make us try Sauly Boys again, though. It was Easter weekend so I understand they may have been short staffed, and also maybe the food would be better if we ate in the restaurant. Came here with Mom for the first time during Arts Fest. Wasn't sure what to order but was attracted to the Spicy Chicken Sandwich, so that's what I got with fries and a Frozen Lemonade. Mom got the Wednesday Chicken Basket Special. The sandwich was tasty, the use of a thigh instead of breast was a great idea, it was so juicy! It also had pickles, lettuce, tomato, and jalapeño mayo. The fries were just....perfection. The best fries I've had in a while. The Sauly Sauce was different....can't place all the flavors. The restaurant was so cute, perfect for people watching, and the letter tiles on the table gave us the chance to play Bananagrams while we waited for our food. The staff were all pleasant! And they seemed to get along, which is a sign of a positive work environment, imo. Minus a star because as good as the chicken sandwich was, it was not spicy, and that's what I was looking for. I almost gave this place 3 stars but I'm always generous in my reviews. Probably 3.5 based on price and portion size. One peculiar thing: the cheese was not on the Sauly Burger. ( Remember that controversy?!) The meat flavor was really good and the Sauly Sauce was pretty tasty. Ingredients tasted fresh and the branded Sauly bun was a nice touch. The frozen pink lemonade was pricy at $5 for 12 ounces. It was tasty and refreshing but I don't think it was worth the money. $17 including tax and tip for a burger and 12 ounces of frozen drink makes me think this is a one and done....unless I'm here on a Monday for the $7.99 burger and fries special. read more

Went here last Saturday while visiting the campus. I had a hotdog that wasn't very good and my wife and son had the chicken sandwiches which they thought were ok. The staff was very nice and friendly and the restaurant was clean. The plastic cups were very flimsy and hard to hold the large one. I would give it a try again and try their burger. read more

Pretty good burgers here. It's certainly not the best burger I've ever had, but still very, very good. We got two MexMix burgers ($9.95 each) and fries to split. The fries themselves were also good, but I wasn't a huge fan of the "chili" sauce they put on top. I felt as if the chili may have been from a can, and it was lacking the right amount of cheese. Overall, it's overpriced for what you get - $32 for two people to eat. But still a good burger. Solid 4 stars. read more

So I really didn't expect this but no good. I ordered the Sauly burger and decided on the double patty. And I asked for caramelized onions instead of raw. Also got a small fry and Cajun sauce. I get my order and the girl took back the wrapped burger and asked the people in the back to put the second patty on.... guess they forgot. So in the mean time waiting for the second patty, my burger sat there and got cold. I said ok whatever let's see how it is.... Then I get home (not even a block away) and the burger is just beef patties and onions and cold as hell!!! Gross and unbelievable. I feel like the patties were made and sitting on the side of the grill, not made to order. The fries were good but, so are any places fries that make fresh cut. Seemed pretty expensive to me for a burger joint so close to a college campus. They're clearly going for a bit of artsy edge by branding their buns and offering fancy toppings, but in the end, I felt like it was a lot of showmanship for a burger that didn't stand above any others I've eaten. Mine was a mushroom swiss type burger, and it was swimming in a ton of whatever the white sauce was... can't remember right now, but it was total overkill. For the table, we split an order of Sauly fries, and they were a bit dry tasting overall. The Sauly sauce saved them, but in my opinion they would be better off with a creamier cheese sauce. The shredded cheddar just hardens on there, the fries underneath get nothing. There's no way to escape this place with a traditional burger, fry, drink combo for under 10 bucks... and it seems like there should be to attract more college students. The burgers and fries are pretty good (and a little overpriced), but the service was terrible. Went on a Friday night, which turned out to be a major mistake. That shift was staffed only with undergrads who were either on their phones or listening to airpods the whole time. The girl who took our order got ours wrong because she misheard us--and had one airpod in while taking the order. Disrespectful, slow staff--they were sitting, talking, on their phones while the restaurant had dirty tables and an overstuffed trash can. It's a shame that many of the customers are also college kids who might be too timid to speak up when they're getting bad service. However, the food is great. I love their Sauly Fries with their special house made sauce. The hot dogs are great too, especially topped with their home made cheese sauce and a little jug of mustard. There are Burger people. There are fries people. I'm a fries person. So I was very excited by the variety of options that Sauly Boy's offered for those of us who are loyal to the salty goodness. I decided to go with the optioned named after the place, Sauly Fries, because it seemed most appropriate. It included a plate a fries, covered in cheese, bacon, and green onion with their in-house made Sauly sauce (like a horseradish/ spicy mayo kinda mix?) The bacon was definitely the star of the show, which has its pros and cons. I think it took away from the taste of the fries, and I CAME for the fries. Visually then looked prety robust and crispy, but they didn't have that satisfying crunch from that freshly fried fry. All in all, it was good--I wouldn't go out of my way to go back but if I found myself there I would probably order again or try one of their other recipes. When the food is right, it is excellent. Unfortunately, there is absolutely no quality control and the experience is a crap shoot. I've had delicious perfectly-golden chicken tenders and tenders so overly burnt that there's hardly any recognizable chicken inside. Same thing with burgers: perfectly juicy or hockey pucks. Fries could be anywhere from under-cooked potato noodles through perfect, all way to dark brown, tough, burnt fries. I really like the food when its good. Some of the best burger/fries that can be had in State College for the price. I'm also willing to take the chance - realizing that it could be some of the worst food I've ever eaten. Very solid 4 star place. Heard good things, but had only been in for the great variety of gelato and sorbeto. Had the Cippolini. Grilled chicken, mozzarella, arugula, tomatoes and balsamic sautéed onions on a brioche roll. This was delicious! It was as good as it sounds. Good sized grilled chicken breast. Not shy w/the mozz. Fantastic balsamic flavor. My son had the El Jefe. Grilled hot dog topped w/grilled corn, avocado, pick and melted cheddar. He said it was excellent and that it tastes like a "real" hotdog. (I'm thinking Coney). We shared Sauly fries. Melted cheddar, bacon, scallions and Sauly sauce(I think sour cream, catsup, horseradish and dill pickle relish). A little shy on the cheddar, but well worth it. We both drank water and the bill was $21. I think it was worth it and I would go back. Definitely Sorbeto when it gets warm. read more

This place is seriously amazing. I love their gelato, hot dogs, fries, and burgers. The food has never disappointed and I probably come here every other day now. My favorite fries are the Louisiana crab bake but eating a for share portion can be daunting for me due to the sheer size but my husband can do it! My favorite burger is the bacon me happy that comes with chicken. Even their Bella melt which has no meat is delicious and that's coming from a person who barely eats any vegetables. They forgot the extra bacon I added to my burgers yesterday and comped my meal today which was totally unexpected! I thought I was just getting some free bacon lol. Staff is really friendly and will let you try any of their gelato flavors. The pint size doesn't last very long in my house because it's so good that it's easy to accidentally eat it all in one sitting. I like their lemonade and outdoor seating as well - great if you have a fur baby that likes to join you for meals. Skip five guys or whatever other burger joints you frequent! What a great place! Excellent food with fantastic flavors. My wife went with the Grilled Cheese and claims that it "was the best grilled cheese in the world." The only downside was the small menu. I don't usually go out for burgers, since it's pretty damn easy to make a killer burger at home. But this new place had piqued my curiosity, so I finally gave it a try. The room itself has an urban feel to it (especially for State College), and the staff is friendly & swift. The positive: the fries are really, really good. Crispy, hot, potato-y goodness. There's also a shit ton of sauces on offer, tho I generally stick to ketchup & mayo. There's a few varities of burgers, but I opted for the Sauly burger, b/c apparently I'm also fairly conservative with regard to what belongs on burgers and what doesn't. The house burger comes with the usual suspects: beef, lettuce, tomatoes, red onion, cheese of your choice (American, cheddar and some other I don't recall) & the Sauly sauce, which is similar to a Big Mac sauce, I guess. The burger is served in a small metal basket, which makes picking it up a bit of a PITA. It's cute, yes -- but plates have been doing a fine job for centuries. The cheese is melted on the bottom bun, which is a new one to me. I like my cheese melted on the patty, but as long as there actually is melted cheese, 's all good. Unfortunately, the patty was ridiculously salty and sadly overdone (the staff claimed it would be med-rare, but it was closer to med-well). So.... a fairly substantial beef patty that's overcooked i.e. dry, and covered in what can only be called a salt lick. Says this proclaimed salt fiend. The brioche bun is branded with the restaurant's name -- another cute touch, but it overwhelms the patty with its breadiness. The meat:bun ratio is off. I don't see myself coming back for a burger, and I rarely go out for "just" fries. There's also a pretty big hot dog selection, and maybe that's where their forte lies. read more

Got food here for the first and last time this week. I paid $12.50 for a grilled cheese, fries, and beer cheese. The grilled cheese was cooked on the outside, but the cheese wasn't even melted. The fries were soggy. The beer cheese was the biggest disappointment. It was $2 for the side of cheese, and mine smelled rotten and was lukewarm. Like they didn't even pretend to heat it up. It was very subpar. Their food isn't bad. The taste is actually good, but I hate that they PILE on so much on their hotdogs that you actually can't eat them normally. We came in at a pretty empty time in the middle of the day and the workers took forever to get our food. They just stood around in the back, eating and talking. I was really excited to try their gelato though! .....Only to find out the taste was meh. I've had far better gelato, especially out of a plastic jar. All in all, not worth it. Before heading in, I'd already seen a lot of rave reviews. To the point that I wondered if they were getting free food for such glowing reviews. Even if that were true, I don't care! I loved it. The only reason I'm rating it 4 stars instead of 5 is because: 1) I had a naked dog and fries... can't really comment on how the burgers are, and 2) $20 for a hot dog and some fries is a bit much. To be fair, when they say the "I'll share" side of fries can serve 3-4 people, they really mean it. We were trying to recruit people in the restaurant to help us finish our fries. For a new restaurant they were really prepared. The kitchen looked full!! Lots of staff on hand to make sure orders were coming out quickly. The location has a nice, hip, industrial feel, complete with a little patio space out front. The food we had tasted great! Hot dogs were nice and crisp on the outside, the brioche buns were a great touch. The toppings were fresh, and the sauces were tasty. Definitely looking forward to trying a few more of their options. Next time, I'm just going to make sure I have 3 other people to help eat all those fries!! read more

The burger is just OK, they won't even put mayo on the actual sandwich for you, you have to do that yourself at the table or before you take it out. I was taking mine out, so that meant I had to open up the wrapper, add mayonnaise to an already cooling down sandwich, and wrap it back up to go home. While the bun is kind of cute with their branding on it, the bread they choose to use does not work at all. I kept thinking I was tearing wrapper off when I was eating the sandwich, which turned out to be the outer most part of the bun it's self, tearing like paper. I know that doesn't make any sense but when you go you'll see what I mean. The meat was nothing different from anything you could make at home, and I'm not talking about adding things to it. When you go to Shake Shack, for example, the meat has tons of flavor...probably a little salt and pepper in there, but there's something magical about the actual burger...with this crispyness on the edge etc. The burger I got here at Saulys was just....really boring. Add that for $9 You don't get any fries, those are extra, and that the sandwich itself was actually never hot, even when I had opened it to put mayonnaise on it, it's a very overrated burger. I'll stick to five guys in State College until I find something better. As far as their gelato I didn't get any but it was all melted and I'll add pics of it. Expensive and tasteless is no way to go through life. The cost of two burgers and one order of fries gave me sticker shock, but I had the loan approved and got them anyway. I probably should have turned around, but I figure a great burger is worth a little extra. This unfortunately was far from a great burger. Let me start with the fries. They were an over-salted, congealed, greasy mess that we didn't bother to finish. Let me reiterate that. Two of us didn't bother to finish one order of fries. Let's move on to the burger. It was small for the price and sauce was a variation of "special sauce." (Don't tell anyone but there isn't really anything special about it.) The bun wasn't bad, but it couldn't make up for the the rest of the mediocrity. I pulled a bit of the beef out of the burger to taste it on its own. The one thing that should have been the star of the show was dry and absolutely tasteless. The bottom line is this. At these prices, the burger should be so good I scream like a teenager at a Beatles concert. Instead, I silently wept for the cow that gave its life to be a hockey puck. read more
