We adopted a puppy on Saturday afternoon and by Monday morning he was very,very sick. He was diagnosed with Parvo and died the next Saturday. We bring home a new puppy, kids get attached. We only have him 48 hours before he is back at the vet in quarantine and then he passes away. Their reaction? Oh we will let you adopt another puppy for free.. ABSOLUTELY NOT. Why in the world would I want to adopt another puppy from here after this experience??? I have upset kids, another dog at home that's been exposed to parvo and not to even mention all the other puppies around our poor little guy in the kennels before we took him home that are probably all sick now too. Last but not least, I paid $275 for this experience. I want a refund and I would never, ever recommend anyone to adopt from this facility. Absolutely disgraceful. read more

Tried their low-cost vaccines and heartworm prevention medicine for the first visit. The service was very quick even though they look super busy and the cost was half the regular treatment & medicine that she normally gets from her primary doctor's office. Their parkway is covered by mud and dirt, which was the only con that I have experienced so far. It seems well operated via volunteers. Worth a try if your pet needs regular vaccines and meds. read more

I appreciate what these folks are doing, but some of the policies need tweaking. I went there with my kids a few weeks ago in hopes of finding a mature cat to adopt. We found one that we all liked and went to talk about the process and see if that cat would be OK to let outside sometimes. When I told them I'd let it outdoors sometimes, they told me they couldn't let me adopt one. They have a policy against letting the cats outdoors. I explained that I lived on 4 acres, had a half acre back yard fenced, and that myself and my kids (plus a dog I adopted from the Humane Society) were always outside when we were home--I wanted the cat to be able to be outside too. They said no. End of story. Said I should find a barn cat... Seems to me that I could have given a good cat a good home and they could have saved another one from a kill shelter. No go. read more

I have two Texas sized Yorkies. The 3 year old is 15lbs and the 2 year old is 10lbs and their both male. They like to pee everywhere and on everything!!! If one pees on something the other will pee right on the same spot just to cover it up! I heard that it's a male thing. The little guy is the "pack leader". He's a sweetheart but also the very jealous type who wants all the attention. The big guy is more of a mellow fellow who needs attention every once in a while. He likes to play Frisbee, fetch, tug-of-war and likes to do the "moonwalk" when he doesn't get his way or wants attention. They have a basket full of toys and every once in a while the big guy will go dig in his basket and bring us a toy he wants us to play fetch with. However, his bossy little brother will sometimes try to take the toy away and play with it before it gets to us and for the most part the big guy didn't seem mind sharing. This back and forth thing went on for about a year or so until the big guy got tired of his little brother's attitude and decided to fight back and so they scrapped, and scrapped, and scrapped again...(where's the "Dog Whisper" guy or the "It's Me or The Dog" lady when you need them?) Having heard that neutering males can help tone down aggressive behavior and may even help reduce their instinct to mark their territory, we decided to check into it. Our local vet wanted to charge us close to $400 per dog to neuter ($800 ouch!), but the Wilco Humane Society was much less and it's the same service (cool!). We called, set the appointment, and two weeks later dropped the two brothers off at 8am. We picked them up at 4:30pm and it only cost us $50 per neuterization, $3 per E-collar, and $10 each for pain meds. Two empty ball sacks later and we only had to shell out $126 bucks which is a bargain compared to what our vet wanted to charge us. Our babies were still a little drugged up when I picked them up, but nothing really to worry about. The glue stitches looked good and they even got a tattoo close to where their nads used to be just so everyone knows that they were neutered. The lady there (sorry honey I didn't catch your name) explained everything I needed to know about taking care of my babies while they recovered from surgery. Thank you sweetie! My fiance and I felt that we were prepared to open our hearts to another kitty, and ended up with two! Something about visiting this branch is always uplifting. We can't take them all home, and something about this place makes me feel as though the critters are in great hands. This Humane Society branch will always get my charity dollars. Their love for the fur-babies is undeniable, and they certainly put their money where their mouth is. This branch is enormous, and the kitties and puppes all seem to be in very spacious areas. When we first moved here in 2008, we wanted another cat and adopted the infamous Beastlette from HSWC who gave us 3 years of laughs and joy being her insane self. A few weeks ago, she went out for her usual early morning prowl and never returned - a sad fact of life out here in the countryside. After a few weeks, we both felt it was time to open up to another member of the family and went to the Shelter to check out the cat condos and I can honestly say, I've never been to a nicer shelter. The people - both staff and volunteers - really make it and after about 30 minutes, we knew we'd found our new companion Portia. Thanks HSWC for all of your efforts to rescue and care for these wonderful animals who are looking for loving, caring homes. I'm looking at Portia right now as I type this and remember the moment I went back into the cat condos to take her out to bring her home. I was just overwhelmed with emotion - both missing Beastie who can never be replaced, and holding this lovely softly meowing (probably "...WTF???") bundle of fur that's now part of our family. We will continue to support all of the great work of HSWC and see at Barktoberfest! UPDATE (9/22): Unfortunately, Portia and His Royal Highness absolutely couldn't get along so we had to return her to the Shelter. It was a traumatic experience as she'd grown on us but the staff went out of their way to help us with it. Much appreciated! read more

Took my little boy there today to get a feel for how he would do with different breeds and sizes of dogs. I also wanted him to see what happens to pets that families can no longer care for or want to care for. I have to say that I was impressed. Lots of volunteers, the staff was exceedingly patient and helpful. I made it very obvious that we weren't planning on adopting today and they weren't pushy at all. They let me walk and play with every dog I was interested in. They were also knowledgeable of the dogs and made recommendations based on our situation, but not pushy. Was there poop and pee in some of the kennels? Yes, but they are dogs. Some with absolutely no training and/ or have lived outside their entire existence. So this is to be expected. I would recommend this shelter and will more than likely get our newest addition to our family from them. read more

The adoption process here was quick. (I don't have any other pets though.) I got my little girl Mia (formerly Pepper) here and I can't imagine life without her. We adopted a kitten from the Killeen location on Sunday evening. By Thursday, he had died in his sleep. They did not inform us of any illness or injury, other than saying that he was kind of small for his age. I adopted him because my elderly kitty had just passed away. I was not prepared for another death so soon. I would still have adopted that sweet kitty even if we'd know about a condition. I just wish that I had known if we needed to get him treated immediately or watch him more closely. I had a vet appointment scheduled for Friday, but he didn't make it that long. I approve of and try to support no kill shelters, but this one needs to provide more information and maybe better training for their staff. Also, it is impossible to get them on the phone. There is a single number for the organization, all calls go to voicemail, voicemail box is full. read more

This shelter adopts out sickly animals that will cost you tons in vet bills later and more importantly emotional distress for the whole family. Vet bills I can deal with but having to euthanize a puppy 3 days after adoption that has multiple illnesses and cannot be saved at 2am at an emergency vet with my children was the worst experience ever. If they observed our puppy for longer than 48 hours before adopting him out they may have realized he had parvo, pneumonia and probably distemper as well. Before adopting the puppy earlier this week we had adopted two cats through them. At their first vet appointment they had upper respiratory infections and a bad case of ear mites. Their animals have not been properly cared for. They are far more interested in getting them into homes then they are in the animals actual health. What's the point of touting yourself proudly as a no kill shelter if the animal has to be euthanized a few days after adoption. read more

I took our chihuahua in to be spayed here and I was completely impressed!!! Everyone we talked to was very helpful and informative! Their prices were great as well and the entire facility looked really neat! If you're looking for a low-cost spay/neuter clinic for cat or dog, definitely give this place a try! If you live around the Killeen area, it's worth the drive out! It is possible to schedule online which makes it very convenient as well. But, they are NOT a full service vet clinic. They do offer some shots and nail trimming if requested prior to surgery. Their website is really well laid out with more of those details. read more

After reading a lot of reviews I was very skeptical if I should check this place but I'm really glad I did. I do agree with some other reviews about the staff being a bit off but everything went very smoothly for me. I went in (wasn't busy) got help easily, put the dog on hold ($10 for 24 hours) and came back the next day and picked her up! It was very easy. I haven't taken her to the vet yet (got her a few days ago) but I'm really hoping she doesn't have any worms like the other reviews are saying. If she does I will do an updated review. I have had 2 extremely positive experiences getting my very small dogs spayed. The clinic was efficient and thorough. I especially like the online scheduling option, document signing, etc. I appreciated the follow up the day after surgery to make sure my girls were ok. A very fair price for all services. I am sad to be writing a negative review on this one but I have to. My family adopted a dog from this place on 9/15. I took her to the vet 3 days later just for a general check and to get her on our account and was told she had a severe heart murmur and an umbilical hernia. Both of these are things that should have been found when she had a general check or at the very least, during her spay. In the just over 2 weeks that we have had her I have spent over $1000 on vet appointments between the regular vet and a cardiologist. She also now seems to have kennel cough. On top of all of this I also have to say I was not impressed with the facility or the people working there. I had to question them about her face and they reluctantly told me she had mange. At least I knew that much when I adopted her. We love our dog and will be continuing to treat her I am just extremely angry to have not been told about any of her problem especially when our vet said "any vet worth their salt would have found these problems immediately" read more

Be very careful adopting from this place. They do not keep incoming animals long enough to know if they have viruses or not. They adopted out a puppy at Petsmart at the Ranch shopping center @ 1431, where 24 hours later, the puppy had to be taken to a pet hospital and was diagnosed with parvo and worms. After the adoption fee and hospital stay, the adopting family spent well over $1,000 within the first 24-48 hours of having this new family pet. Not to mention the trama that their children went through not knowing if the new puppy would survive or not. This all could have been avoided if they kept the puppy through the parvo incubation period- 2-3 days longer. They also exposed the virus to any animal that was visiting petsmart where their owner could have touched the puppy and then their own dog. read more

The people working in the dog area were amazing and helpful, but once I walked into the building the front desk woman was rude and bitchy. Then we went into the kitty corner and all the volunteers made my boyfriend and I super uncomfortable with them just staring and rolling their eyes. On the 11th my grandma passed away and I was in a low low place and decided I needed a buddy. I searched high and low for a dog that jumped out at me. (Adopt don't shop) and after a few days I finally found a puppets that I wanted to meet and she if we clicked. I met her we hit it off great. Was told she was a manager approved adoption and put her on hold to deal with funeral and such the pick up my selected pupper and have a new companion that I had bonded with. We were in contact while I was away and the day before I got back. She was adopted out to someone else. I was lied to by being told if anything were to change I would be contacted, and that since she was a manager approved adoption that she may be there for a while. So cut back to yesterday day Sunday I make a close to 1000 mile trip for my grandmas funeral, a hour long shopping trip at petco spending close to 200 bucks just to get to the rescue to be tilde she was adopted out the day before. I have never get so low ever. Now I've gone through the embarrassment of having to return all the toys food leash harness treats bed and bowls,and driving 65 miles to pick her up just because no one looked to see if she's was on hold or to contact me like I was told. Need less to say after 6 years after loosing my last dog and recently my grandma I have yet lost something else. Just use caution when talking to Amanda Bre and Michael they will tell you what you want to hear and make it seem legit. Just to tear your world down again. read more

We went here recently to donate some items & to see a dog from their website. It was easy to drop off the supplies, there is a little shed where you can leave them. The dog we were interested in was there sleeping but was unavailable (puppers already got adopted!) so we looked at the other dogs. The facility itself is big, the road to the buildings was all gravel though. Might have been a bit easier if we drove the truck instead of the car. The animals looked well cared for and they had friendly volunteers around. Will come back. read more

This is a great place. Striving to make Austin a 'kill free zone". (meaning NOT killing animals) They are working very hard to make things better. Hats off to you all. Love love love this place. I went for a chili cook off they hosted and it was amazing. I am keeping it short and simple here but my wife and I would like to offer our volunteer services to them. She is a groomer and I am an amateur dog bather but love animals and would love to just go and spend time with the animals to show them some people still care for them. Spend some time volunteering there, donate funds, donate supplies...be a part of the SOLUTION. My husband I rescued a sweet puppy from here and a week later we found that she had hook worms. When I called to tell them they informed me that they only do one round of dewormer and don't do a second. When I told the lady I now had to have my yard treated she dismissed me with a "do you have any other questions". I received a crap apology and then the lady hung up on me. So I rescued a puppy that they said had been dewormed and wasn't. I find this to be a bit misleading. read more

Hoping to reach the owner with this review. I have some information regarding the "manager or director" of the Leander organization that I feel is important for you to know. I know a recent employee of HH. She is a wonderful, hard working, responsible, animal loving young lady. She worked her tail off and absolutely loved the work she was doing. Unfortunately Christine was awful, not only to her, but to anyone who wasn't in her clique or one of her "favorites". I feel it's extremely sad that one unkind person has the power to drive away so many great employees. Apparently there is high turnover at this location because no one likes being treated like garbage. I know this young lady would like to speak with anyone who could possibly have an impact on improving this situation for current and future staff. Got a kitten from this place 3 days ago and it's sick. So I called and they were like we didn't make it sick (I guess implying that I did) so I ask if they have an on site vet the boy says no. So I ask is there anything they can do at all considering I just got it and it's sick the boy says they can take it back If I want them to. So I said do I get the money back so I can get a non sick kitten from another place besides them and the boy told me that's a donation and no I don't get it back. What a shithole I couldn't recommend these uncaring assholes to get a sick animal from at all. I thought well I could save a kitten instead of buy one from a kitten mill and as it turns out I needed to save it from the idiots not taking care of them at this shelter. Steer clear of this place they don't care if the animals are sick and they don't have a vet checking on the health of the animals. read more

I love this place because it is spacious and no kill. THH is right down the street from our house and we have gotten two pets from this location. Our first pet is a cat who we got years ago. My kids and I spent literally hours in the cat area looking at and petting kittens and adult cats. The staff left us be and were happy to leave us to visit with all the cats. We ended up with a sweet small adult who had a crumpled up ear due to having had ear mites at some point (she did not get them there, they treated her for them when she came in). What some people would see as a deformity we all saw as adorable and it ended up being the reason we took her home. The process was easy and quick to adopt. Our other pet is a chihuahua who we got last year. Again, we spent probably a couple of hours with him, walking him around the grounds there (I didn't want a yipper that barked at every little thing...) again, they left us be and we had plenty of time to check out all the dogs and spend time with this one. My husband brought our other dog up to see how they reacted to each other, which is nice - so you don't end up with a dog your other dog hates. Everything went equally well with this adoption. I am one to always notice things out of place or untidy, but this shelter was clean and well kept the many times we have been there (we have been a couple of times just because my kids wanted to go check out what they had and we didn't leave with an animal.) I think they do a good job here, and I have never had any problems, on the contrary I have always felt the animals were well cared for and given lots of love. read more

The staff was great to work with! they worked with us to answer questions, make suggestions and helped us choose an awesome dog. Lots of outside spaces to walk dogs on a leash, or fenced areas to let them loose. We were especially concerned to make sure we found an animal that was gentle with our young child. They have a nice space for cats too, although we didn't really spend much time there. I would highly recommend this location to anyone considering rescuing an animal. read more

I will start off by stating I adopted my sweet little shelter dog from this facility. Wonderful dog and my family loves her and truly enjoys what she brought to our family. Now for the review and I think I will make a list. 1) the people they hire or that volunteer are often dirty and not because they are handling dogs. I haven't met one person at the facility or at adoption day at petsmart that knows anything about dogs and 9 times out of 10 they are rude and have hardly any people skills at all. BAD, I MEAN REAL BAD! 2) They tell u adopting 2 dogs or brother and sister is not allowed and harmful to the pets development. I asked all 3 vets at premiere animal clinic and heart of Texas emergency if that was true and all 4 said horse shit, not true and borderline silly. 3) The dog I adopted was fixed at 7 weeks, way too early. 4) my puppy had a bad case of worms and was supposed to be treated 5) The people that work for this place just aren't nice so it just rubs u the wrong way. Plus the facility and people are dirty. It's not the dogs fault so the get 2 stars but if it was just based on the facility and people it would be a Zero! read more

Our local vet clinic was going to charge us around $300 to neuter our new addition to the family, so we searched elsewhere and came across Humane Society Williamson County. All appeared fine until two days after the surgery when severe bruising and swelling started showing, and what looked like internal bleeding had begun to spread rapidly. After watching him for the remainder of the day, we took him into a vet clinic (NOT HSWC) first thing the next morning. After assessing and treating the area, the vet then prescribed him antibiotics to prevent infection. While we began to see an improvement in the infected area within the next 24-hours, he started bleeding from his scrotum - NOT the incision site. Just to clarify, he was not just bleeding IN his scrotum; blood was coming OUT OF his scrotum, in an area separate from the incision site. Within the hour, we brought him back to our local vet who seemed pretty perplexed herself as to why they had made an additional incision - particularly in an area that will commonly swell up with blood. He ended up having to undergo an additional surgery to fix what had been done poorly and incorrectly initially. In short, use Humane Society Williamson County as your last resort when it comes to spaying/neutering your pet. As a non-profit, they're under-funded and complications have and undoubtedly will continue to arise because of that. We saved no money going the HSWC route, and risked our new pet's life in the process. Never again. read more

Had a great experience adopting my little guy! Having been to many shelters in Austin over the past 3 years, I felt like this was a no pressure environment to stop in and see the available dogs. They actually had a lot of background info. on him that was very helpful. Many of the in-town shelters have no history or are unwilling to share certain negative traits or behaviors that are present. The adoption fees were very reasonable and paperwork was simple. Glad they also have a low cost vaccination clinic on the 4th Saturday of each month. I will be taking advantage of that when the time comes. read more

I have adopted two cats from Texas Humane Heroes, so I have seen first-hand the level of compassion, professionalism, and positivity that Texas Humane Heroes exemplifies. What a wonderful place! When I recently visited, all the animals seemed so happy and healthy and...best of all, calm. Unlike the stressful sounds in many shelters, only some happy barking was heard here as the dogs asked "Come, see me!" Callie, the cat I adopted from Texas Humane Heroes, fit into our family with no problems primarily due to the socialization she received there ... and the fact that she is the best little cat in the world. Other shelters/adoption centers are doing a great job but Texas Humane Heroes is the BEST! read more

On Sunday May 21st we adopted a puppy from Humane Heroes. On Monday night, a little more than 24 hours later, our puppy was fighting for her life at an emergency veterinarian with a sever case of Parvo as well as other intestinal parasites. I reached out to Humane Heroes on Tuesday and explained that keeping the puppy alive cost us almost $1000 for the first day of care. I asked if they would help to cover the cost as I have seen other animal rescue services like Austin Humane Society do. They told me I could return her with no refund and they would try and provide care for her. If she survived, we could re-adopt her at full price however I read other reviews were others were promised a pet and it never happened. They refused to help cover any of the expenses that we incurred. They told me that they took her in on the 17th and she was already out for adoption on the 21st. I was told by the Vet that the incubation period for parvo was 7-10 days. Our dog was in their care for less time that the disease would need to present symptoms so these guys are selling pets without making sure they are fully healthy and passing the cost onto the families that are trying to do the right thing by providing a home for these animals. I understand animal rescue is a noble, loving pursuit but it does not absolve you from the responsibility of ensuring the pets you are selling are being sold in a healthy state. There should be no rush to get them out of the door. They should be holding on to them to ensure that common, deadly diseases like Parvo are not present in the puppies they are selling. Holding on to the pets to ensure they do not have Parvo ensures that the financial burden of treating it is not unfairly passed on to the adopting family. read more

Just wanted to share our family's experience with this facility. Back before Christmas my husband and kids saw some puppies that was being fostered by a lady that is a foster parent with this facility. We fell in love with one of the male puppies named Gus. The next day we went to Texas Humane Hero's to inquire about the puppies. We were told that they would be available on Jan 20th. So we marked our calendars for that day. Around the first week of Jan the foster parent had the puppies out at her place of business and we asked if we could do a meet and greet with our dog to make sure that Gus would be a good fit for our home, of course she said yes. We brought our dog to meet Gus and they got along wonderful. So talking with the foster parent we asked her if Gus was available and she said yes. She would tag him with our name and number and provided that information when she returned him back to the facility so that we could adopt Gus. She said for us to be there when the first opened on Jan 20 and we could take Gus home. I asked her multiple times was she sure and she reassured us that yes we would get Gus. She has worked with the facility and she stated that they take the advice of the foster parent. The reason why I wanted to be sure was we have three kids and didnt want them to get their hopes up. Fast forward to yesterday Jan 20, my three kids went off to school super excited cause today was the day that we were going to bring Gus home to be part of our family! My husband went when they opened at 11am to get Gus. Guess what Gus was not there and had already been adopted the day before. Gus was given to the foster parent's neighbors. How is this right?! Needless to say we have three broken hearted kids due to the fact that this facility allows their foster parents to back door the process!! read more

I showed up to drop off our 9 month old dog to be spayed. When I walked in, the I was nearly knocked off my feet by the odor. There were numerous others in line with the same appointment time. When I handed over our pup to the assistant, she brought her back within seconds stating that she was too aggressive and they wouldn't accept her. I'm thankful now! I took her instead to the Salado Veterinary Clinic where she was treated like a princess. It was more expensive, but well worth it. Unless you just can't afford it, stay away. read more
