    bad Caesar Salad

The food was, to be honest, very mid. I got the country fried steak which was absolutely delicious but a bit overshadowed by the off tasting salad and the crusty rolls. The waitress, a very kind pink-haired woman, checked in often and said the rolls were fresh yet they tasted anything but. The ambiance of the place was decent, everything appearing clean, but it was very loud. Do not get the salad, the croutons taste of stale cheese, very off-putting.

My family and I stopped in here due to almost everything in the area being low ranked, fast food or closed. Our waiter rocked and took great care of my kids, my wife and myself. Our drinks came quick as well as the food came out cooked perfectly the way we ordered it. My only complaint is when I ordered another Old Fashioned I was told they where out of the mix... I wish they knew how to make one the Old Fashioned way lol no pun intended.

I am not going into a long review about this establishment. This is a well known chain restaurant that has consistency from city to city and state to state. Try the honey butter on great rolls. Pricing and portion size is always pretty decent. Just go here if you want peanuts and a decent steak.

So a couple Friday nights ago our large party of family and friends visited the reincarnated old school steakhouse (former speakeasy) to celebrate my wife's birthday. We could not have been more satisfied with the level of personal attention and service from both our hard worker server and Amy one of the new owners herself. They truly made us feel like welcomed and like long time regulars. I highly recommend reservations using their website system during daytime non-business hours. They were able to add a late addition of 4 extra guests to our party due to another cancellation, but trust me and get a reservation particularly on weekends. On to the table. Their fresh dinner rolls were to die for. Soft and deliciously doughy. We loved the family style french fries and hash browns served with wonderful bowls of brown country gravy on the side for dipping or smothering. The bacon wrapped filets were perfectly prepared and had that classic steakhouse smoked flavor from the bacon. And lastly, the North Star bread pudding was world class if you're an aficionado of the homestyle treat. We can't wait for our soon to come next visit!

I ate all the pasta and told our server about the chicken being like rubber and she stated that she's mentioned that exact thing to the cooks but that maybe if a customer complains they would possibly listen. What made me a little annoyed though was that I ate none of the chicken yet they didn't at least bump off a few bucks off my meal. The service was fine but I feel like over the years this has become my last choice versus my first choice.

We've dined at The White Linen now at least eight or nine times, including the private chef's table in the old safe (the restaurant is in an old building where a bank once was). The food is always delicious, exciting, thoughtful, and nicely plated. We appreciate the fact there's a fine dining restaurant option in Topeka (it's a lot closer than Kansas City!). But every time we go we are always struck by the service. As good as the food is (and it's very good) the service is always lacking. It feels like the servers (often high school or college age) are play acting at fine dining service. Everything is always just a little off. For example, the silverware: it stays out through the whole meal. Normally, you finish a starter and they take away the used knife and fork and bring new, clean ones. (This could just be easier on the servers but perhaps the restaurant doesn't have enough silverware to do this.) Then, there's usually on every visit one mess up or another. If this happened once on one meal I'd say it was an anomaly, but when there's something every time we dine there you start to question what kind of training goes on with the front of house staff. Here's a list (not an exhaustive one) of things we've experienced: * Entrees for another table being set down in front of us. This by itself is no big deal, but when the problem is pointed out and those entrees are then picked up and set in front of other diners, I wince. * When asking for salt and pepper a small bowl with salt and pepper mixed is provided. I don't know if this is a chef's choice or the server's, but I'd like to dose any salt and pepper myself, thank you. * My wife is allergic to cilantro (not a dislike as in "it tastes like dirt" but an actual EpiPen-carrying allergy) and it was noted both on our reservation on Tock and described verbally to the server when we ordered. A starter arrived with microgreens as a garnish. When my wife asked what the greens were, the server took them back to the chef and another one was sent out because the microgreens had cilantro in them. I worry the server did not communicate the allergy in the first place. * Cleaning equipment left out on a dining table next to ours (see photo). For all the care and attention to the food and the menu, I wish Adam VanDonge paid as much attention to the training of the front of house staff. Certainly, they must be working on the tightest of margins running a fine dining establishment in Topeka. Staff is at an appropriate minimum, but the lack of a Front of House manager shows. When asked what a certain item was on a menu, a server replied, "I don't know. I don't eat this kind of stuff." I wrote such a long review because I have a hunch none of these issues get back to the kitchen. They are kept in the dining room. I think most diners coming to The White Linen are thrilled to have a great night out--and they should. I applaud Mr. VanDonge for the fortitude to keep TWL alive with a vision of great American cuisine. The front of house staff are eager and enthusiastic, don't get me wrong. I just wish the service reflected the quality of the food.

I don't think the owners/developers of this beautiful looking spot had an "Olive Garden-like Experience" in mind when they opened. The staff, dressed in all black apparently have never learned to operate an iron. Loose tucked, slightly faded and wrinkled uniforms abound. No personnel manning a host stand or welcoming customers. When we arrived a young man who was busy place setting a high top in the bar, speaking muffled through his mask and facing away from me was apparently inquiring who we were? After being seated and ordering cocktails from our gorgeous green velvet booth we waited more than an acceptable amount of time to receive them. The cocktails were well prepared and I would note here that the wine list by both the bottle and the glass is excellent. No bread or complimentary snack. That's right, I said NO BREAD at an Italian restaurant? We shared the ONLY salad option on the menu which is a Caesar. While it was generous in size and loaded with fresh lettuces (not a fan of kale in my Caesar, but hey), the dressing was lacking of any authentic flavor or even a hint of anchovy. Cheese was fine grated and clearly low quality domestic. As for the misshapen "crouton or toast" thrown on top, don't get me started! For mains I received a lukewarm serving of lasagna that I had heard good things about. Our waitress Rose, politely took it back, but returned with the same serving reheated in the oven, but lacking the sauce and garnish that were originally on the plate. It was tasty and had tremendous potential as a signature dish. My wife had the Linguine Carbonara and it was both hot and delicious. One other note, the wines by the glass we ordered did not arrive with the meal and after saying that she would bring them immediately, Rose stopped at an adjacent table and took their order first. I think with some proper training and attention to detail, this could become the dining place our city so badly needs.

The room itself was nice but I am not sure what is going on with the service here. I left detailed feedback to management and have zero confidence in getting a response. Interacting with the staff here is like pulling teeth. While Topeka is not a luxury market, this is a luxury hotel, and other similar properties I've stayed at (The Current in Davenport, IA is one such example) still deliver big city customer service. We sat at the bar around 6:45pm on a Saturday night. The place was about half-full (empty?) which is always a bad sign. If a place is not busy on a Saturday night, there is something severely wrong. We ordered, drank our drinks, and paid, with as few interactions or words from the staff as they could possibly muster. Their take on a chocolate martini was absolutely one of the best drinks I've ever had in my life, hands down. I would've liked 3 or 4. Or 5 or 6, let's be honest. I would've even been talked into ordering what sounds like their sub-par food, just so I could stay at the bar and keep drinking those all night. But no one talked, or offered food, or offered menus, or suggested anything. I'm not going to do their jobs for them. I've been through it all: restaurants, coffee shops, dive bars and breweries. It's not always a good day at work, I get it. But like... you have to SPEAK to CUSTOMERS. I'm an adult, with things to do and places to be, and this bar + restaurant wasn't it. At the end of the day, I place the blame completely where it belongs: on management. Something is going on here that's causing major problems. Failing local economy, budget cuts, staffing woes (are you paying them enough?) -- I have no idea. But management needs to be IN the property on weekends and figuring it out. They need to actually read and respond to the automated surveys their parent corporation sends out. And hey, they need to be on Yelp, looking for fixes and offering solutions.
