Scott and his team at Texas Stone Masons are incredible. We had them build an outdoor hearth that is the focal point of our pool area, along with extenstive retaining walls, gorgeous illuminated steps and the final decking for our pool. It's a work of art! The fireplace is massive and we use it all the time. Scott listened to our original ideas and improved upon them significantly, especially with the elaborate steps for our very steep backyard. We had a wooden deck and because of continuing repair we made a decision to have our porch and patio stoned in. We solicited many bids, and found the bid from TEXAS STONE MASONS to be the most competitive. TEXAS STONE MASONS have a 5 star ratings, so our decision was easy. The old lumber deck was remove and disposed of and thr new 20' x 40' deck was layer out and installed in two days. We were so thrilled by the beauty of it, we had a second wooden smaller wooden at the back door remove and replaced it with stone. Doing this stone work improved our property value immensely. When I made my original inquiry, Scott was quick to pick up the phone and get me a quote. Unfortunately his service took a major down swing after that. It took him until the next day to actually put that same quote in writing. Then when I wanted to go ahead and confirm the job, it took him over 24 hours to get back to me, and he wasn't actually sure when he could schedule the job at all. When I purchased my home it was just being completed and had no facade around the fireplace. It was basically a hole in the wall. And that was how it was intended to look with the exception of the extremely plain mantel. After looking at a few businesses, I picked Texas Stone Masons because they had the most five star reviews. We had a house electrical fire that led to the removal of our outdoor parrilla grill. I contacted several masons including the original mason but decided to go with Scott. Scott Boniwell, the representative we worked with at Texas Stone Masons, is unprofessional and rude. we engaged Texas Masons to do a simple project. In advance of the crew arriving, we prepared the worksite removing AV equipment and supports and cleared his crew through security. Scott arrived late and his crew was held up by security because the crew driver had an expired drivers license. Some how Scott made this my problem and he wasn't smart enough to go to security and drive the vehicle to our home. His solution was to call me to tell me the crew left, that he wasn't interested in the work and HUNG UP on me. Before hanging up he did wish me luck in finding another provider! Beware! We met with Scott and discussed a number of different projects. Ultimately, we hired Texas Stone Masons to put a decorative flat stone (Arizona Rosa) on the surface of our patio (21' x 29') and the walkway to our pool, and also to repair the stone behind our pool's waterfall and the grout in a large decorative stone wall/border. Scott understood what we wanted done and provided a fair quote to do the job. Once the work began, Scott inspected the work each day and made sure we were happy with the job. My wife and I spent months searching for the right landscaper/landscape designer and ran into so many obstacles it became a drudge!!! Nightmare is a better adjective. But after a few recommendations from neighbors and our neighborhood association's "ListServe" we connected with a great designer (more on her later) who sent us to Daniel Stone and Landscaping Supplies on Hwy. 290 West (see separate review). Whew... what a fantastic stoneyard. So big that they to drove us around in a golf cart to see the various selections of quarry stone for our project. After selecting the stone we had to find a contractor that could install what we wanted, and who would work with us and our designer. Custom Stonework & Scott Boniwell came highly recommended by the yard manager and after seeing his website (amazing examples of his work) I contacted Scott and arranged for a time to meet me at my home in Barton Hills. Surprisingly, it was very quick and Scott showed up right on time and surveyed the various areas slated for "hardscape". Not having a final plan we took some general measurements and discussed the removal of the sidewalk, irrigation changes (more on that later, too), the slope and grade of the yard and of course timing and cost. Having worked for a bricklayer/stonemason in my younger years I was very familiar with the process of planning, site preparation and execution. He was confident that he could give us exactly what we envisioned and has really performed as promised. We even made a few changes "on the fly" after finding irrigation runs and drainage structure once excavation began. Not a problem. Scott took the extra day it took to reroute all of that stuff to cut large stone pieces into the pattern we chose to incorporate into our new walkway. He's had some great ideas, and unlike many "git 'er done" masons he's been more interested in building something that is not only aesthetically pleasing but functional and unique. We had to replace about 40 linear feet of stone steps that lead to porches around our house. The original job (before we owned the house) was done very poorly and was an excellent example of how not to build stone steps. It was a big job, and for stairs its very important to get the rise and run correct and to have proper slope to shed water. Scott Bonniwell came up with a beautiful, creative way to do the job, and keep our costs down. There were several changes along the way that were no problem what so ever. He was always thinking of ways to save us money, or when we needed it, come up with smart, creative solutions. Maybe the best thing about Scott is that he is just a wonderful guy to have around. A couple of years ago I had Custom Stonework build a retaining wall in the backyard. After the job was complete I asked how much to make the check out for in which Scott did some quick math in his head and came up with a number several hundred over the estimate. I was never given the paper work to compare pricing for material an labor. It took me about two years to have the yard completely back filled. The wall has sense collapsed and I have lost a lot of dirt that was brought in to back fill. I spoke with Scott and was told that it took me too long to bring in dirt, there was nothing he could do for me, and promptly hung up the phone. I asked if I could get a copy of the receipt in which I still haven't heard back. I've contacted three different contractors to look at the wall and all three stated that major errors were made. The mortar was sporadic; the bricks were not staggered enough in places, and mainly no concrete footing was placed. Several times I asked for holes to be drilled for lighting that never happened as well. I would be very wary to use this company and will now do my homework on who I hire. Jeremy W. read more
