I found Austin Concrete Construction years ago on Yelp. We had them bid on a project we never ended up doing. It had nothing to do with their bid; we simply sold our home. Fast forward a few years, our new home needed the driveway to be widened. You could not pass two cars if one was in the garage and another in the driveway, despite being a 2-car garage. Robert came out to the house in his signature barefoot attire. We walked through the project, he took some measurements and told me he'd be in touch with a quote. The quote was reasonable, given how thick and strong the concrete had to be (support a diesel truck). He gave me some upcoming dates and we locked one down. Robert has been specializing in residential concrete for Austinites since the 70s. His son and two other employees have been with him since the early 90s. They are a staple in our community. And for good reason. They arrived on time (8:15 AM) and ready to go. They had the form and rebar ready to go by lunchtime. The concrete truck showed up at 12:30 and was gone by 1 PM. The finishing work and forms were removed around 2:30 PM. As promised, this was a 1-day job for exactly what was quoted. They walked me through how the new section was reinforced and attached to the existing driveway. They also helped slope it to drain water properly. Despite being towards the side of the property and abutting the fence, they still did the finish work on the sides of the new slab. Best of all, they helped accommodate our 8-month old daughter's handprint into the concrete. They thanked us for our business, cleaned up every last bit of debris, and were on their way before 3 PM. Home ownership is a blessing that comes with many special joys & burdens. Unless you're an old school renaissance man like my dad, you as a home owner must eventually face the crap-shoot of hiring someone (if you're lucky, an honest & skilled craftsman) to build or repair something on your property. Unfortunately, we have learned the hard-way on several occasions that on any kind of home improvement project you undertake, something can & will go wrong. It's going to take at least twice as much time as you thought to complete (because the workers will only show up every 3rd day), it's going to cost you twice as much money as you had budgeted, and the final outcome is going to be below your original modest expectations, which by this time, you will have thrown out the window, willing to accept just about anything to get the dang project complete so that you can once again use that part of your house and get back to life-before-the-project. We'd been living in our home for about 6 years before we finally had the courage (and savings) to undertake our biggest home improvement project to date -- getting a concrete driveway installed. I was given Robert's name from a friend who had had a few patios poured by Austin Concrete. He came out and gave me a quote the next day and even hipped me to the fact that I could increase the size of the pour and it would not cost much more since you pay for the concrete by the truck load. My patio was in the back of the house, a good bit away from the driveway and I thought that would mean renting a concrete pumper, but to my surprise, all of the concrete was brought in by wheel barrow and Robert and his crew of about seven quickly and efficiently trucked the concrete in and had it professionally finished in just a few hours. Robert uses a sturdy mix of a rebar grid and a thicker layer with extra reinforcement around the edge. It blends seamlessly with my existing patio and I am so happy with the result. I contacted around 6 contractors when I decided to build a 20x12 concrete patio extension. Robert and his crew's bid came right in the middle of the pack, but still had all the promises/techniques as the more expensive guys, so I went with him. Robert came THE NEXT DAY after calling him, I told him all my plans about eventually adding a pergola and he explained everything very thoroughly. Double rebar reinforced edging means my patio will be able to hold up the weight of my pergola, and this was already included in his quote! other guys wanted to add $$$ to the quote for reinforced border. To be clear, Austin Concrete Construction are a no frills kinda company, I got my quote handwritten on a piece of paper. They do not offer stuff like stamping, staining, warranty etc... I found out about Austin concrete through a Google search and saw the many Yelp reviews so I thought to give them a call for a free quote. Robert was easy to deal with and gave us an estimate in person a day or so after my initial phone call. After I approved the quoted price, he set an estimated start date of about 10 days or so. A few days later, I received a call on Sunday afternoon asking if he and the crew could start the project on Wednesday. That was earlier than expected, but I was happy to get my 10' X 10' back patio slab flattened and increased in size. The crew started the work around 0945 and the cement truck showed up at around 11:30. They removed a portion of my fence to ease in the back and forth wheelbarrow trips with cement and they replaced the fence upon completion. From start to cleanup, it was roughly 4.5 hours. Everyone worked well together as I had taken many pictures throughout the processes as I was walking around during the whole patio transformation. Back in June of this year I had some foundation repair work done in a house in Austin. As a result of the work the property ended up with a change in elevation between the garage/entryway and the driveway which included an original drainage system that also suffered some damage. So the problem I had was to find someone to repave with correct angles and elevations to make it practical to drive on, avoid rainwater retention and maintain the aesthetics of the property. I called several contractors to get their opinions and suggested solutions. Robert's plan was simple and the cost was reasonable, plus the reviews on this site and others, helped me decide to go with him. The work was done as presented and with good weather he actually finished a day in advance. Not living in the house I drove up to receive the job and was happy to see that 2 of the 3 requirements were met. The 3rd one was related to the rainfall so I had to wait for a good downpour prior to posting this review. With the rains Austin has had recently mainly due to Harvey, my son who lives in the house confirmed that the water is draining as expected, away from the house. These guys are amazing. Definitely a family operation going on here. The owner and patriarch, Robby brought out a crew of about 7 guys for my 360 sq. foot foundation for my music studio. Two of the workers are actually his sons. He told me today that he used to give his sons little tiny wheelbarrows full of concrete when they were 5 years old so that they could help on the job. Their lifelong experience definitely showed today when they were troweling and smoothing down the slab. I'm doing a stained concrete floor, so it had to be really smooth and and attractive, and they totally nailed it. As some of the other folks mentioned, don't be unimpressed when Robby shows up at your house to do an estimate barefoot and possibly shirtless. This must be his secret way of filtering out the uppity clients! Note: I had another company offer me a bid lower than Robby's and was initially going to go with them. They showed up for their first day of work and then changed their tune to a price $1,200 higher. At that point I called Robby and went with him. So bear in mind that if another company outbids Robby, there is a possible bait & switch situation brewing. I could type all day about these guys. But I won't. Call them, you'll see. read more

The aforementioned barefoot concrete guru showed up with his remarkably affable team promptly at 8am, had a quick discussion on the details of the job, leveled it, trenched the wall supports, framed it, reinforced it, poured it, screeded it, sunk the j-bolts, floated it, and we were done in the afternoon, easily, as promised, in 103° heat. These guys know what they're doing, work well as a team, and are pretty funny, to boot. They have that relaxed demeanor of a group that has seen it all, and simply doesn't make mistakes. And the price is right on the money, with the extra effort to do the job right thrown in for free. The verbal quote on the phone was exactly what I wrote the check for. I couldn't recommend the guys, or their work, any more highly. They were a well oiled machine that obviously had worked together for years. Rain butted into the schedule but it seems everyone got shifted so I didn't lose my place in line. I had another use for the dirt and grass dug out for the driveway expansion and Robert made sure the crew did minimum damage to my freshly rained on yard when they transported the diggings to the designated area. I am now the envy of all my neighbors with their narrow little skinny driveways. I had an oak tree which lifted a section of my driveway at least 2 inches above grade...enough so that it was a horrible tripping hazard and difficult to drive over in a vehicle. My project was a footing for a retaining wall as part of a terrace I'm building in my back yard. I already had forms and steel ready for them. Total volume they poured was 9.5 yards and site was about 130 feet from street so a line pump was required. His price was a bit higher than other bids but he was on time and had a quick turnaround. Quality of the concrete was very good. He was super easy to deal with and I appreciate his refreshing candor. He had two helpers go around afterwards and clean up most concrete splatter and waste. For my job I preferred his COD terms rather than giving money up front. COD makes sense to me for one day job but not everyone in town operates like that. read more

I had a really good experience with Robert and his crew and wanted to share a tip. They recently repaired my driveway, walkway and poured a new patio for me at my home. Some background. We were repairing a situation where my walkway and driveway have literally sunk over 3 inches relative to the slab foundation. There are a number of options and I had assumed that I'd have to demolish and pour an entire driveway costing thousands. I was prepared to spend a small fortune. Probably the most important thing Robert helped me with was finding a simpler, low-cost way to fix my problem without going overboard. And it worked! He has a trustworthy intuition about what will help the customer rather than padding his wallet. His crew showed up on time in the morning to begin work. My job involved more than a little digging, jack-hammering, concrete sawing. They setup the forms squarely and did a good job of the prep work. My situation was a little more complicated because I had several complex angles involved to the sloping nature of my property. Robert did the right thing without me interfering. I'm not sure if someone with less experience would have known what to do. Haul away of my old, demolished concrete was handled efficiently, the same day even though I changed plans on them at the last minute. Same with the delivery of the new concrete. I was impressed how the logistics of this job were handled. I know things don't always go to plan, but they did for me. In the end I was impressed with the quality of the work, using steel rebar throughout. Robert is also a genuine, nice guy.
