Got the Chicken with Oyster Sauce after checking out Ithaca Commons. Wasn't too busy and the service was amenable. Dish was done very well with good plating. The rice came in a unique conical tower. We were the first customers of the day on a snowy Sunday and the staff warmth made us immediately feel comfortable. We had the tom kha gai soup, which was the best we have had since Bangkok. I didn't dislike this place, but I wasn't totally blown away either. My party ordered a variety of the typical staple thai dishes and I tried most of them. I liked all of them, but wasn't particularly impressed by them. I didn't try any of the chef specialties but they all looked really good on the menu. This place is a good alternative if getting a table at one of the nearby Thai restaurants (Sticky Rice or Taste of Thai) isn't possible. They were very friendly and accommodating. read more

They don't process your order and then lie to you that they are waiting on one thing but really haven't started your order. The food was really good (pad Thai, pad see ew and the garden rolls), however I had to wait about half an hour to receive my order. I ordered online, which seemed to be a mistake, and they didn't seem to have it. They kept reassuring me that it was being made and then kept bringing out other people's orders. Finally they brought out the food that was supposedly mine and it was not. I was told my order could be made in 2 minutes and then they finally found my order. Would come here again just for that dish. And reasonably priced at $22. Disappointed in the glass noodle pad Thai ($10.95). Not flavorful and very little chicken. Would not order again. Veggies and tofu in garlic sauce was delicious ($10.95) though the portion seemed smaller than other dishes. Appetizers: Fresh summer roll was ehh - mostly iceberg lettuce, but good mint flavor came through. Fried calamari was good, crispy coating and tender calamari inside. Som tum papaya salad was very good. Well seasoned, good portion size of the vegetables. papaya seems to be mixed in with a lot of shredded cabbage and daikon. I feel like, this place is very underrated! They have a very good food and atmosphere. But for the service, it's depend on server. I am a regular customer and served by many servers. Some are professional and some are not. Just say, half of them are professional and half of them, don't know how to serve, or manage time, refilled water, watch for seated customer, check for customer's feedback, cleaning set and turned table ect. But because I was always there when they're not busy, so it's O.K. for me. I think they should have a sign at the front to tell customer to wait for seated. Now customer don't know how to do when there're at the front door and wait for server who's at the back and server did not know that they have customer waiting for them at the front. And sometimes, I saw customer they waited for seated and walk out of the restaurant, too. That's very awkward. But because they have great food. Like, Basil, Larb with sticky rice, Pad kee mao, Curry, Mango or custard with sticky rice ect. I never disappointed with their food. They also gave me a card for collected points, 10 points for 1 free lunch. And you should tried to asked them for this card, too. Even some customer would upset with their service, but the staffs are great people, friendly and tried to served. You could talk to them more and open up to asked them, or tell them what you want (like need more rice, asked for hot tray, or refilled water, or asked for table, or wait for too long) and they are very willing to do it, or find out for you. I still recommended this place to everyone. Because food quality are great and I never disappointed with their food quality. If I could give Thai Basil a minus rating, I would. We have usually enjoyed the food but the service hasn't been great. Now we have had an experience with both the food and the service that compels me to write a review. Sunday night we ordered take out, and a friend who was going to join us, ordered separately. Only one of us went to pick up the food. They did not have an order for her so we ordered it again and paid for it. The next day we discovered they had charged her credit card as well as ours. We have asked them to fix this but the answer is always, " The manager is not here and I can't help you" We have now filed a dispute with our credit card company. This restaurant met my expectations. The inside setup is a little cramped especially with the tables on the plush bench seating. We were able to hear the peoples conversation very clearly sitting next to us, which if you want something intimate this would not be the place to go. We had our two kids with us (3, 5) and we were able to accommodate food to their spiciness (which is none). I had the thai basil and it had a good amount of heat, which I like, and my wife had the pad thai with tofu which was nearly the perfect size. My husband and I moved to Ithaca from Tampa. We've had a hard time finding Pad Thai that compares to what we get at home. This place, hands down, the best we've had in N.Y. and the closest to our favorite Thai restaurant back in Florida. Went today with my friend and her mom, who are from China. They had the pineapple curry, one with veggies and tofu, the other with shrimp. They both enjoyed their dish and the Thai iced tea was delicious. My husband tried my left over Pad Thai I brought home as the serving size was more than I could eat... and he couldn't stop eating it. I'll be back and will bring him next time we are craving some Pad Thai. read more

Needs more emphasis on the food then on the decor. Slow service. Not attentive staff. Took the food an hour to come out when they only had three other tables to take care of. All of our dinners came out separately. Food was not served piping hot. Had the pad thai and it was edible but not worth a second trip. Pad prik khind was missing chilli peppers and was bland. Gorden Ramsey would especially yell at you for shaping the rice with a funnel. If this the best thai food in Ithaca the bar is set way low. Miss Thai cuisine across from Wegmans. I hate to rate this down from my previous rating, because for the past few years, Thai Basil was great. We had our standbys, and we definitely made heavy use of this restaurant while we lived in Ithaca. However, at the beginning of the year, I adopted a vegetarian diet. My husband continues to eat meat. No problem, because Thai Basil has vegetarian options, right? If you're vegetarian or vegan for even remotely ethical reasons, you must verify that the restaurant understands that when you are ordering something that is vegetarian or vegan that you probably want to receive something that is vegetarian or vegan. Let me explain. We typically place orders on Grubhub. It's easy to do, and in theory, it should be harder for a restaurant to misunderstand your order. That's why we preferred it. The past two times, I ordered vegetarian steamed dumplings. One time was even ordered explicitly from the vegetarian section to ensure that maybe there wouldn't be any mix-up, because for some reason an entry exists for it in both the appetizer section and the vegetarian section. I was wrong. Both of those times, I bit into the dumpling, only to discover minced meat inside. Thai Basil doesn't deliver to Varna, and given how much time my husband had already spent going to pick up the dishes and how tired and hungry I was, I didn't make him go back. Again, if you're hoping for vegan or vegetarian options, MAKE SURE THEY UNDERSTAND THAT'S WHAT YOU WANT. Because seriously, twice in a row is just crap. The final time we showed up, the restaurant claimed to be closed and appeared deserted. The door, however, was unlocked, as my husband discovered, and he called out toward the back. Despite supposedly being closed, they were still apparently accepting Grubhub orders. There was also a festival going on in that part of town, so I'm surprised they weren't open and taking full advantage of the crowds. I don't know why the restaurant suddenly started going downhill. It's like they stopped caring. It's a shame, because I really liked this place. Biting into meat-filled dumplings twice in a row, though, I was kind of glad they waited until we were about to move out of the town, anyway. One more time, for the people in back: If you're ordering vegetarian/vegan, make sure it's vegetarian/vegan before you leave the restaurant. And one more time, for the people in the back of Thai Basil, apparently, instead of running your restaurant: When someone orders something vegetarian, they expect it to be vegetarian; that could be someone's religion you're messing with because you don't care to take the minute or two to check. Please straighten up and go back to being the restaurant you were...for the sake of everyone else in Ithaca. I don't know what happened, but start caring, and fix it, because we really liked you for the three years we were in Ithaca. read more

I walked in to order take out later in the evening when it was not packed. The server ordered the wrong thing, not understanding that "mock duck" is a vegetarian entrée and is not $16.95 (despite what the computer said). The menu tells me it's $11.95. After finally clearing that up they tried to put a surcharge on for brown rice. $2.50 for brown rice? That's 20% the price of the entree! For rice? I understand charging an extra buck--but really, I'm in there to order the entree and TB is penalizing me for getting the brown rice? I was told the order would be ready in 10 minutes. It took around 20 minutes AND was not the high quality that I have purchased here many times before under the previous owners. The entree was mediocre at best. One of the best parts of Thai Basil, was the fact that it was BYOB--so you could bring in your own nice wine. Not anymore! This place went from a place with really great service, a really nice spot, one of my favorite in downtown Ithaca, to someplace I would not even recommend to friends and colleagues. After having tried other Thai restaurants in Ithaca, Thai Basil consistently ranks the lowest for me. The food is not flavorful at all. I have tried both the green curry and the red curry, at two separate occasions, and both of them had this off taste almost like some ingredient had gone bad. The flavors did not mix well with the coconut base. I have also tried their vegetable dumplings, and they were nothing more than average. They serving size of the dumplings is definitely not justified by the price (more than $1/piece!). Totally a waste of money for me :( read more
