Came here on a quiet Wednesday night and we were seated immediately given that we were the only people there. After trying it, I'm so confused why there weren't more people! Ordered the appetizer sampler which was alright, but the real star of the show was my entree. I ordered Pad See Aew with crispy duck and it was absolutely delicious! Went to dine in at this restaurant last night, service was amazing, wasn't too crowded, food was served in a timely manner. The restaurant had a nice environment, nicely decorated and I loved the music. My friend ordered a dish but he didn't like it so left it half eaten. When the server (not sure if she was the manager?) cleared our table she asked very nicely if we didn't like it, and we said no it's okay we just never tired it before and we are really sorry for wasting...she felt so bad and offered us a free Thai fried rice to take home and try. We came to Ithaca for a family vacation. When evening time came we looked for an open restaurant that could occupy 6 people (2 adults and 4 kids). We usually look for thai food and have eaten in many thai restaurants all over the world. The minute we walked into the "Thai Basil" we fell in love. The atmosphere, the hospitality, the smell and of course the head chef!!! The food was amazing, without any doubt, the best thai food we ever had, made with love and attention to details. The amount was exactly as you would want it to be and the flavors like a dream. Of all of the Thai food places in Ithaca, this one is my favorite. Located just off the commons, it's right downtown but never crazy crowded. The food is good and they offer a lot of vegetable and seafood options, so my pescatarian self is always satisfied. We were picking up some take out for our group. We had the Thai Fried Rice, Pad Thai, and a mixed vegetable with Tofu. There was one server for a pretty decent sized dining room who appeared to do-it-all. It took a long time for our dishes to be prepared, and we surmised there might be only one or two people in the kitchen. We were ordering some hot subs next door, which were prepared quickly. So our subs got cold as we waited for our Thai food. The flavors were good. But the portion sizes were very small relative to the price. I've been there twice and none of the dishes I've tried have disappointed me. As a person who eats Thai food a lot, this is a very safe choice if you want to eat Thai food because they don't have dishes that taste really weird or bad. It's not the best Thai restaurant I've tried but their food was above average and some were good. I really liked the lobster pad thai (~ $22) and roasted duck red curry. This was our first time at Thai Basil. We are always up for Thai food, so while visiting Ithaca, we thought we'd try this 4 star restaurant. We didn't really feel like it was worth 4 stars though. Make reservations if you want to be seated quickly but regardless of that, you will wait to be able to place your order. The same people that wait tables are the same people taking online orders and they seem to get overwhelmed easily. After waiting over 20 mins for a drink and appetizer order ( they did give us water right after we sat) we were approached by a lady with an iPad and told to give our complete order at once. I asked about not getting our appetizers at the same time as the entree but was told that the order that you get your food depends on when items are complete in the kitchen. We ordered the samosas, crispy duck pad Thai and lobster pad Thai. We had mango juice and lemonade to drink. The lemonade is cheap, straight out of the bottle Minute Maid but the mango juice was really good. It's thick but tastes as if you just bit into a fresh ripe mango. The samosas were light and tasty with a slight spice. Before we could finish the 3 on the plate, our entrees came. Both were very good and flavorful. You get more meat with the crispy duck than you do with the lobster. All in all, the food was okay and would be fine as a take out order. But the customer service is poor. No one ever asked how things were, if we needed anything and when we were given our check, no words were said. The check was just laid on the table with not as much as a thank you. Serendipitously found ourselves here for my 20th birthday and was very much satisfied with the service and food! Food all came together and we're delicious, drinks were great, and they even brought me a complimentary fried ice cream on fire for my birthday. As it was brought out, the lights dimmed and the disco lights went on and it was a whole celebration for a quick 20 seconds. Definitely captured my idea of unexpected hospitality. I didn't appreciate being screamed at by the hostess/waitress/take- out order phone person. Yes, she was spread too thin. However when my meal was brought out so much earlier than my companions that I was almost done eating before he even received his food,I believe I deserved a civil response when I pointed out to her that my companion had not received his food yet. Now under new management/owners - still very nice. We stepped into Thai Basil and noticed it has been re-decorated. The new decor is much more cohesive and appropriate for a nice sit-down restaurant. The man working said the restaurant is under new ownership. It was their first or second day open. He was understandably eager to make our visit a good one, reassuring us every step of the way that everything would be even better than before, and happy to answer any questions. The waitress was very attentive with water - something I always appreciate. The menu is set up well for vegetarian options. In fact, nearly everything can be ordered vegetarian (tofu and vegetables). I got massaman curry with tofu and vegetables. The vegetables turned out to be everything imaginable - it was great. My dining companion loved her stir fry. I'm sure I will be returning. I was craving for an authentic Thai food and what better dish to have than the most popular Thai steet-food Basil Pork. I ordered a lunch special Thai Basil Pork (Kra Prow) and made a special request for an authentic one. I also added a Thai-style fried egg, which is normally served with Kra Prow in Thailand. The food was delicious. The spicy ground pork meat infused with aromatic Thai basil and the crispy, over-easy fried egg really reminded me of the food I had back in Thailand. I personally recommend this dish to everyone who wants to try an authentic Thai food. Overall, delicious food, nice presentation, great experience. It was just the right amount of sweetness after I stirred in the cream on top. I liked that their Thai Iced Tea is not the typical bright orange color you see in many restaurants. My only quip is that the straw was a little too short for the tall glass it came in. The shrimp pineapple red curry I got was the most wonderful blend of flavors. This was one of the first restaurants I went to since Covid for dinner. They helped to accommodate a rather large and rowdy group for a dinner meeting with such patience so I am very appreciative! The food is not the greatest, but tasty enough, with huge portions for dinner. The staff seemed a little disoriented, even as one point spilling tom yum on someone's iPhone...but I guess after quarantine, everyone is a little out of practice! We stopped here while visiting Ithaca last week. It was the best Panang curry I have every had. My partner had the pad Thai. He said it was the best he has had since working in a Thai Cafe. I felt really bad for the staff. There was a family with toddlers there that told them that the food was too spicy (if you don't like spice why are you eating Thai?). The staff kept asking everyone else there if the food was too spicy. We tried to reassure them that the food was delicious. I hope they don't change anything! read more

We moved here from a large city that had a large Thai population and many great Thai restaurants. For a small city, Ithaca has quite a few Thai restaurants! Your favorite will probably depend on what you like and how you like it prepared. I love curries and feel Thai Basil has the best curries in town. My wife likes their pad Thai better than the others. I can't really speak for the other items on the menu. For eat-in, it's a very cozy restaurant with very good service. We go there frequently for lunch. I have a love/hate relationship with their takeout, though, because they don't open until 5 pm and the soonest you can order for pickup online is 5:45, which has me sitting at work waiting to pick it up. I suspect if I called right at 5 pm and ordered, instead of using the web site, I could probably get it much earlier. I usually find myself opting for lesser quality Thai Express for takeout just because I can pick it up pretty much anytime read more
