Solid Thai place in NW Surrey. Don't let the dumpy outside looks fool you. Parking is available in the ghetto lot in front the building (maybe 8 spots total). There is also street parking along 92nd Avenue. The interior is quite orange. Interesting colour since most Thai places are traditionally golden yellow. There are seats for maybe 30 people. Staff are friendly. They are actually from Thailand. I had the L5 red curry chicken lunch special. Food tastes quite authentic here. The tom yum soup is a bit on the salty side, but they actually got the spice level right. My local friends (North American palates) had trouble finishing the soup. The portion is somewhat on the smaller side. 1 rice bowl sized bowl of chicken curry, with the equivalent amount of rice. Served with a spring roll with plum sauce (are these even Thai?) and some sort of salad with dressing (also not exactly Thai). I left a bit hungry. Curry was nice and tasty though. Good flavour and I guess a half decent amount of meat. Wouldn't mind coming back, though I'd probably eat something else before or after. read more

I called more than 10 times off my phone and off my cousins phone and no one picked up. I called around 6:30pm on a saturday. There is no issue with the food as the food has always been great whenever we've ordered but this time no one picked up, even after SEVERAL calls. read more

I wanted to love this place but.... First off the fellow working there was so enthusiastic and sweet I had to over tip him haha. So no problems there. We went for a quick work lunch and ordered lunch specials. Water was brought without having to ask. Red curry lunch special my partner said was good. I ordered the pad Thai with tofu and was offered plain or deep fried tofu so that was nice. The pad thai arrived and it looked nice - peanuts bean sprouts etc. only problem was the sauce was wrong - it was some thick sweet sauce which does not belong on pad Thai. It was not right. Also the sauce with the spring roll was a thick sweet sauce not the fish sauce based one you are supposed to get. But the spring roll itself was nice except the pastry was a bit thick. But the most disappointing was the soup(comes free with the lunch). It was hot and sour soup which again I don't think is Thai. I specifically asked if it was vegetarian and after checking I was told it was vegetarian but had some egg I said that was fine. I was eating it and it def tasted like chicken broth but I thought they had assured me. Then I heard the people behind me get their soup and they also asked( a different server) and was told no it was chicken broth based. Just as I finished mine. That is really bad. You should be able to trust a restaurant. Therefore the 3 stars. read more

I had read how people said this place had the best Thai food in Surrey, so I had to try it out. We ordered the Green Curry, Pad See Lew, Ginger Beef, and Pineapple Fried Rice. The standouts were definitely the Green Curry and the Pineapple Fried Rice. The curry was so flavorful and had such depth. Eating it with the fried rice just made it that much more delicious (note that their curries don't come with rice). The Pad See Lew and Ginger Beef were good, but were a bit on the salty side. However, this place definitely doesn't skimp on flavor as none of the food was bland and tasted authentic. I can see why foodies rave about this place! read more

Overdue review for this restaurant... I've come here maybe three or four times and can easily say it is my favourite Thai restaurant in the area. As someone already said, it truly has been the closest authentic Thai experience to the real deal. I visited Thailand in November and always come to Thai by Thai when I miss the country and it's delicious cuisine! Atmosphere: The interior is humble and can get rather busy quickly. It appears to be family run (Thai) and they do their best to accommodate everyone. Drinks: Their Thai milk tea is spot on, and they serve the infamous Chang beer for my friends who enjoy a good brew. Not to be confused with Singha which is also a great beer. Food: they have lovely lunch specials!! It's so nice that they provide these combo meals for such great value. I have tried their pad Thai (of course!!) and usually get medium spice which is perfect; one of their beef basil noodle dishes; a few of their yummy curries; and most importantly their khao soi- the northern Thai dish we all love and cherish. If you like coconut curries, please do yourself a favour and try it!! Even if curry is not your go to I would still recommend trying it since it is not served at most Thai restaurants. Who would have thought that the best Thai food I will eat outside of Thailand would be in Surrey? This place is a delight - the food and the service are spectacular. This place has to be a family ran restaurant because it is always the same lady taking our order, who is polite and genuine. Most Thai places in the area are not owned/run by Thai people, but this one certainly is. The decor reminded me of when I visited Thailand. Now, the most important part: the food. The pad thai is divine - it has the perfect ratio of sauce to noodles and comes with plenty of chicken. The cashew chicken and green curry I also delicious. Whenever I go, I always ask for my dishes spicy, and they always have the perfect amount of heat. This is my go-to place for Thai food, and I do not see that changing anytime soon, or ever. read more

It seems like this place is here forever. One of the old good times restaurant is located right on Scott road at 94 ave. The fried rice , coconut prawns n chicken noddles were all so yummy that I decided then b there to go eat here sometime. Tonite was the night when I held here tight even though the food, actually the soup I ordered was extraordinarily hot ( spicy) that tears fell down my eyes . My bad as I asked them to make it spicy by adding green chillies n they did it. ( FYI Thai chillies are considered to be hottest variety) Soup was very flavourful n yummy with loads of sea food n herbs . I wish I had asked them non spicy... plz be aware. Pad Thai on the other hand was the best o could ask for. Good amount of chicken n peanuts on side just in case u don't want to add them onto ur noodles. They don't have a lot of alcoholic beverages except options in beer . Moving on to deserts- few options again. I was inclined towards pudding but my cousin wanted to have ice cream so we asked the server n as always she suggested the most expensive on menu. ( though it was $6 but other deserts were $3). Apparently the coconut milk at the bottom was salty topped with sticky sweet white rice n top layer of fresh mango. Since it's not seasonal so mango wasn't sweet or tasted closer to mango but whatever. Walls are painted dark which gives it a dingy look otherwise pretty clean place. If you were to click on my name above and review my reviews, you may notice a trend. DH and I often eat out for Thai food. In fact, you might notice that I've reviewed most of the Thai spots in Surrey and a few in our new digs, New West/Burnaby (more come to mind that I haven't reviewed... Thai House, Leela Thai, Green Basil, Sticky Rice... if you want my thoughts of them, I'm happy to share). We rarely eat out if truth be told because I love to cook, but I have yet to be able to master Indian and Thai, so we eat at these locations most often. Tonight, DH and I had the pleasure of eating at Thai by Thai. We started with their Spring Rolls accompanied by a dipping sauce that was nothing short of unique compared to the other spots. Since my favourite Thai spot in Seattle closed, I've been on a mission to find comparable Pad Kee Mao (Or Phad Kee Mow, Ke Mow, Drunken Noodles... doesn't matter how you spell it to me) and I can honestly say that I have been disappointed nine times out of ten. As such, tonight's experience made my heart pitter-patter. The sauce was rich, smoky, and at a Medium level, was knock your socks off hot. I loved it! DH has his dish too... Kra Pow, Gra Pow, Thai Basil... again, doesn't matter how you cut it... it's his dish. And it was also extraordinary. Ridiculously authentic, fresh, and spicy! Here's the deal: People are complaining about price, but what they don't tell you? The portions when compared with competitors are gigantic. We brought home lunch for two! It should be noted that they aren't licensed yet... so no Singha accompanied our meal and it was sadly missed. Still, you get a five, Thai by Thai. Which is the first five I've given out to a Thai place in Canada, since my beloved noodle studio. You earned this five (sans alchohol) because: 1. Your Pad Kee Mao was fantastic. And you have it on the menu when most places don't even though it's standard street fair in Thailand (wtf, everyone else?) 2. The service was fantastic. Our lovely waitress worked the entire room and handled all the incoming take out orders. 3. Your portions are huge and there truly was value for the dollar, in my opinion. read more

The food is amazing!! Food is very flavourful and the aromatics is amazing. We had the green curry with chicken. It was great but the odd thing was there were green peas in the mix as well. Definitely not the norm at most Thai restaurants I have eaten at. The satay chicken was perfectly grilled and moist. The peanut dipping sauce was a rich, creamy texture. The sticky rice with mango slices was the perfect ending to the meal. This is probably the most famous Thai dessert for anyone to try. The sweet coconut infused warm rice matched well with the cool slices of mango. Service was good. We were checked up on regularly. Food arrived at a reasonable pace. Ambiance is nice. They have the Thai theme going on. My only complaint is what they show on TV. I do not think the staff are paying attention to what is playing. I was eating my meal and watching a pest control show. I felt a little sick when the show zoomed into a mummified ? beaver/huge rat/rabbit.....I paid, left and had to go clear my mind. Amazing food and service. Cons: limited parking, short staffed, very VERY spicy (not that this is bad but be warned a "medium" spiced papaya salad tastes like Extra Hot !) But aside from these two factors, the food is pretty good; combined with the fact that it's reasonably priced - "Thai By Thai" gets a solid 3 stars from me. The service is good, and the food is served at a decent pace. The default spiciness of the food is low - but of course, can be adjusted as per your request. The one downside to the curry? Was stopping in surrey for the night and in search for some Thai food. This place absolutely exceeded my expectations. The bbq chicken was the most tender and juicy chicken I've ever had before, and the pad see iew was delicious with the pork. I love Thai cuisine and would go to different Thai restaurants. I'm quite disappointed with the food that I ordered for to go at Thai by Thai--Pad Ped Chicken and Stir fry Beef with Ginger which I asked to replace with Chicken. It was tasty alright (I hope they did not put MSG). But there were more onions and bell pepper than chicken! Also, the dish was supposed to have bamboo shoots and mushrooms but I could hardly find bamboo shoots and only saw two small slices of mushroom. And the servings were very small. I wish they were more generous. I don't think I'd be back again unless all the other Thai restos in my area are closed. read more

Seeing how there's a shrine with a portrait of their Thailand king right at the entrance, there seemed a strong sign of respect for their nation, and already a robust but subconscious impression of how authentic the Siamese dishes were to become. I liked how this standalone restaurant interior flew my nostalgia back into the new Siam and the interesting outskirts: embellished elephant statues, illustrated adage of their history projected on the walls, and rusty dark wood appearances, all surrounding me in an arrangement I cannot explain but can only remember. Maybe it was the quaint setting of Pattaya that called out to me, I'm not sure. The large Tom Gha soup is one of the best I have tried, ordered with chicken that comes with a plethora of simmered vegetables stewed in with the signature aroma of lemongrass, galangal, coconut milk, kaffir lime leaves, mushrooms, and chili peppers. The result: a stimulating spicy-sour light-creamy kick. The red curry was also a cradle of flavors, and I enjoyed how there was a notch more of coconut cream giving its not-too-thick-or-thin consistency; it went perfectly on top of their fluffy coconut jasmine rice. The green bean stir-fry with vegetables and chicken sizzled and spiced; everything in the medley danced with a salt and chili nuance, crunchy or tender, and as well, well paired with coconut jasmine rice to balance out the fired up taste. Having thai iced tea was just as bittersweet and chilled as the ones served by street vendors in Bangkok, minus drowning in my own sweat under their fiery weather. The staff had nice people serving the meals, attentive to our water glasses. It was funny though how the soup was served without serving bowls and spoons at first; a bit of a tease to hunger, actually. We took a bit more effort to flag down our waitress probably because their front counter sidewall was high and decorated. The price is right, and a lunch deal of $8.50 that's absolutely my plan to try. As I left I caught their sign that says no MSG, and I grinned. I will be back for more. read more

A Thai restaurant run by an actual Thai family?? With delicious, authentic food? For an economical price? In Surrey to boot?? This place sounds to good to be true. But that's only because it IS too good to be true. Thai restaurants in Metro Vancouver are an abysmal lot. Usually, I end up walking into Thai restaurant and walk out with a takeout bag full of Chinese food (which I love, but not when I'm in the mood for Thai food!). I've gotten so fed up of the Thai food here, that I stopped going to Thai restaurants in Vancouver (I've heard the Thai food scene in Seattle is a bit better, but I digress). I guess I have high standards because I was born in Bangkok, and spent my childhood eating actual Thai food (disclaimer, I'm not Thai, but two of my aunts are, and I spent some of my childhood in their Thai household). But Thai by Thai tastes pretty darn Thai, and that's no mean feat. I ordered two of their lunch specials (the Pad Ped Special, and the Green Curry Beef) and asked them to make it as spicy as they could (I'm a Chilli fanatic, so sue me). To my surprise, the food was ACTUALLY spicy, and made my nose run (always a good thing if you love spicy food). The food took about 15 minutes to prepare, and is made fresh. The chicken and beef were both tender, and the food as a whole was very flavourful and tasted authentic. I could actually taste the coconut milk and ginger (which is more than I can say for a lot of restaurants). I didn't care for the soup that came with the lunch special, however. It was bland and flavourless (with tiny bits of tofu swirling miserably in a salty puddle). The spring roll that came with lunch was similarly flavourless (but crunchy) and only made palatable by the sweet Thai chilli sauce they included in the lunchbox. As for the salad, well,if someone could explain to me WHY Thai restaurants in Vancouver always serve their small side salad with mayo, I would be forever greatful (never once have I seen anything like this in Bangkok. Where the heck did this tradition start, anyway??) Even though I took my food to go, when I arrived in Richmond the food was still piping hot (a very good sign). It took me a few tries to actually eat here, because the restaurant is often closed from 3:00-5:00pm (the only time I pass by Surrey) which was pretty inconvenient. But perhaps I just eat lunch too late in the day. All in all, Thai by Thai is a great place to grab some authentic Thai grub. I highly recommend forgoing the lunch special, and just ordering the main dishes by themselves. Because that's where the food really shines. read more

Although the food is very flavourful and tasty, it's due to all the msg they use. I could tell because I was so extremely thirsty afterwards. I found everything we ordered was very oily. Even when packing it home and eating the left overs the next day the oil collected on the top and it was disgusting. Green curry was just ok, it's the same I can make at home. Eggplant fish tasted nice but with very little eggplant. Phad Thai was ok ....again everything was oily and full of msg. Would not go back again. read more
