I have to say service and food were great. Well deserved 5 stars experience. Price here are very reasonable. The restaurant is somewhat hidden. There are plenty of free parking here. We got the beef mantu (if you check in on Yelp, you get a free appetizer), Beef Korma and the lambchop. Everything is so spot on and delicious. The beef mantu had lots of flavors. stuffing was very generous. The Beef Korma was so tender and the beef was very flavorful. lambchop is a boney but it was also very flavorful. Portion size are reasonable. Prices are reasonable. We will definitely be back. Too bad we are moving away in the area. When we are in the area, we will definitely go back. There was some hype coming to this place but it was not a great experience. The service was good but the food was really bland. We've been to a few afghan restaurants around the lower mainland and this one definitely wasn't one of the better ones. We got the Bolani, Mantu, and Ashak to start. These were the best things we ordered by far. Tons of flavour in every bite. We then ordered the Pallow and the Tekka combo to share. The rice was flavourless and the meat was almost non existent. The meat is buried under the rice in the Pallow but there was only about 4 small pieces. And the picture below shows the meat from the Tekka combo. As I said, the dishes were missing something. I always feel bad asking for salt or pepper if it's not already on the table, so I rarely do. But the table beside us went up to the front and asked for salt. The man from the table said he's from Afghanistan and has been to this restaurant before but doesn't know why it tastes like there isn't any salt in the dishes. I ordered a rice lamp, and I was quite disappointed with the quality of the food, the rice have too bad , I was told that to waiter she told me ok and I call the chef , he coming and he told I'm form the chicken and I was told him the story again :Firstly, the meat had a strange aftertaste that was quite off-putting. It didn't taste fresh and left an unpleasant lingering flavor in my mouth. This significantly detracted from my enjoyment of the meal. My Turkish coworker recommended this place for Afghani food and he was spot on. The food was absolutely delicious. I fell in love with qabeli pallow after I had it at work and at other places. It is similar to briyani though the method of cooking and spices used are different. I am starting to like having nuts and raisins in my rice now. Over here the portion is pretty big, so you will likely have some leftovers for packing. The qabeli pallow here is cooked with beef shank. The beef just melts in your mouth and falls off easily when poked with a fork. Do not be deceived by the dried out looking exterior. It is not tough or dry at all. It also comes with a vegetable side which is equally yummy. The chicken combo comes with salad, vegetable side, 2 chicken kebab and rice and naan. The chicken is also soft and juicy, with a slightly charred taste that reminds me of tandoori chicken. The mantu appetizer is very much like a Chinese dumpling (jiaozi). It is filled with minced beef and onions and topped with a yogurt, chickpeas sauce. The dumpling is chewy but not overly so and the whole package is just so good. There are 3 dumplings in the appetizer. The place is fairly big with two dais for those who want to experience sitting on the dais and eating from it. I will assume plates of food will be placed there and you sit around it, eating from it. Very similar to the traditional way of eating in the Malay culture. We've been to Afgan Chopan and its two other Richmond locations many times. Richmond locations are now all closed, however. The surrey restaurant is much nicer, in my opinion, due to the traditional Afghan decor they've put up in the restaurant. I've always enjoyed all my experiences with Afghan Chopan. So yummy!! My husband and I always get the couple combo as take out. This time, I also added an order of bolani, just to try. The couple combo came with naan (it was a bit too hard this time), salad, a veggie dish, 2 drinks, skewers and kabuli pulao. The last two items were so flavorful and delicious! I don't usually eat much rice but I was always able to eat a lot of pulao! If you don't know what a pulao is, it has rice pilaf mixed with raisins, carrots, and lamb. The bolani was also delicious. It was basically a flat bread that was stuffed with potatoes, and you dip it into a sauce. Sounds simple but it was really good! On a personal note, I like this restaurant way better than the one by Granville Island. The one by Granville Island was more upscale and felt a bit more pretentious. read more

When we first arrived as a party of five at around 7:00 P.M., the restaurant was nearly empty. Despite this, when we asked to be seated, a waiter rudely told us they were fully booked until 9:00 P.M. With no other choice, we made a reservation and left. Upon returning for our 9:00 P.M. reservation, a group of about ten people entered right after us and were immediately seated, while we were forced to wait. After standing around for another 15 minutes, we were finally shown to our table. The service only got worse from there. It took over 40 minutes just to get our appetizers, and we didn't receive our main courses until almost 30 minutes later. The same waitress who had initially brushed us off when we made our reservation wasn't outwardly rude, but she definitely made it clear that we weren't welcome. Her attitude made us feel like an inconvenience, as though she couldn't care less about serving us. It was an utterly frustrating experience. Pretty good food though, so if you don't mind the wait and poor service you'll love this place. read more

I was a bit disappointed and the owners should make it a point to have that offer removed ASAP. We ended up ordering a couples combo ($28.95). Their pop selection consisted of Coke, Diet Coke, Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, 7 Up and Sprite. Basically, a very limited selection of cola or lemon-lime soda. I asked for Sprite and ended up Coke. It was a slightly bumpy start to my dinner. The restaurant is located in a business plaza. There is plenty of parking available during the dinner rush. I am not sure how the daytime would work out when all the other businesses are opened. I find it kind of interesting to find all these restaurants in located in Surrey plazas. Food was more than enough for two people. Meat was nicely marinated. We really enjoyed the rice. I particularly like the cilantro chutney on everything as it was fairly spicy. The worst experience I've ever had . Walked in to the restaurant no hostess no greeting after waiting in line for 10 minutes for them to tell us reservation only so we made a reservation for 9 an hour later . We waited for more than for the girl to walk aimlessly while there was six tables available with dirty dishes on them when I said something the girl said that there's only 2 of us while the owner was showing favoritism to the people they know having them seated without reservation. Once I walked into the door I was a bit confused since their was no bell or indication of someone comming in. I had to poke my head out to get their attention behind the counter. This is the first time I've had afghan food, it was delicious! The meat was tender and full of flavor. The rice had raisins in it... I was skeptical at first but once I tried it, it was a soft sweet raisin and went very well with the rice. The bread was pretty good, it was a little hard but the bigger ones were soft and fluffy. The milk tea with a little bit of sugar is quite filling for the taste buds. Yes but their are down sides to this restaurant. The wait time was quite a bit almost 15 mins for the appetizer and then about 20 more mins for the main course which was the couple combo. The salad that came with it seemed old and flavorless but the rest was pretty good. It seems that their was only one server and it run by a family. Their was kids running around but I don't mind. The server was nice and kind. All in all I would come back for the food and would recommend this place to anyone who would want afghan food :) read more

Great food, generous portions, and inexpensive. The smell of the spices are fantastic. First time eating here or having afghan cuisine. Found this place on Yelp decided to give it a try. We ordered the couple's dinner for 2 with the vegetable dish side, my sister got the chai tea I ordered the dough to drink. After talking with the waitress we also ordered the lamb chop. Who knew looking for marble slabs would lead me to this unexpected love affair. I'm not for long distant relationships (yes, Surrey, to me, qualifies as a distant location=P) but how can you not jump into one when the meats are succulent and the aroma puts you into a trance? I drove in a blustering blizzard in my little sports car and I still made it. So just get there, okay? Now on to the good stuff. Eat bolanis for your appetizer! Lots of them. They were so amazing that I nearly bursted into tears with every bite. And at $2.50 a plate, you'll pop these babies in your mouth like no tomorrow. BUT do save room for the main course. Grilled meats of the succulent kind on a bed of fragrant rice with vegetable sides of your choice. It comes with naan bread as well. Good serving size. Be equipped with an iron stomach because you will not be able to stop eating until you've consumed every single crumb. AND make sure you leave a bit o' room still for the Ferney. That's right, Ferney with a capital F. It's their only dessert but damn, it's good. My recommendation is that you eat one and order another for the road. I want to name all my children Ferney. DON'T forget to have your chai tea too, even though it's a bit of a hit and miss. The first brew was fantastic. The second brew was ok. I also ordered a lassi because I'm always down for a good lassi. Perhaps not appropriate on a winter's day but it was simply delish. Wow, just finished reading over my review. I sound obese. I'm addicted to the Bolani appetizer. I don't know authentic afghani food at all - this is the first place I ever tried it. So I am not a good judge on authenticity but DAMN does it taste good. I'm not a fan of the kebabs, however. I grew up eating very flavourful kebabs (the best way I would describe these would be light and summery), here however they are heavier and plainer as is traditional in the northern parts of India (as they were derived from the Middle East). In the eastern part of India where I grew up they are interpreted very differently. And as we all have a soft corner for our childhood foods, I have to admit, I don't like the middle eastern counterpart. read more

Every weekend my girlfriend and I enjoy trying different cuisine and we typically use Yelp to assist with these new findings. While searching through Yelp, we couldn't help but read the reviews on Afgan Chopan, 7 of 11 reviews were 5 star. My first though, the reviews are from friends of the owner. Despite our thoughts we decided to drive from Maple Ridge and see for ourselves, boy was I wrong. We started out with the Bolani served with hot sauce, delish! The hot sauce was different from any other hot sauce with a mild, cool and refreshing taste we ate it alone and ask for seconds to eat with the main dishes. The Mantu Dinner (I watch the chef make fresh from our table) and Chicken Kebab arrived just after we finished the apps. I noticed another review gave a 4 star because they felt the sever ignored them towards the end of the service. This is a customary practice in some cultures, Italian and Afgan I'm know of from living in both countries. Dinner is considered family time without the interruptions of a waiter or waitress. This place is by far the best Afgan food I have every tasted. We're returning today for another meal! read more

I really love when a restaurant not only assimilates a cuisine, but also the country's culture; not only do you have the choice of the average chair-and-table dining area, but there's also a Middle Eastern floor-and-silk-pillow seating area option. The place itself is immaculately designed- what captures my eye the most is the waterfall when you first walk-in. The food is incredibly tasty; I've only indulged in their buffet, not ordered off the menu, but I expect it to be equally as good. Afghan cuisine!! We had a tiny bit of trouble finding this establishment, but once we navigated the lot it is in we were all good. Greeted by a nice waterfall immediately upon entering. Seated fairly promptly and were attended to right away. I had bolani to start, which was potatoes stuffed into a pastry like dough, served with this amazing hot sauce on the side. My entree was a shami kebab, ground beef with onions, chili peppers, garlic and spices. It came with a delicious basmati rice, which also had some raisins and carrots in it and naan bread. Chai tea was had on the side. Everything was delicious and I would come back here anytime. They also had nice paintings of Afghanistan.We ordered the bolani for our appetizer. It was filled with a garlic and potato filling. It was very flavourful. For our main, we had the "couples combo" for 28 dollars, we had 3 different meats, a spinach side, yummy rice and naan. Nothing was bland. The rice had sweet plump raisins and i dont like raisins, but loved them in this. The naan was warm and soft. I had all my leftovers today and it was still awesome. You get so much food for such a reasonable price and tastes fresh the next day. If i had to have one complaint is that the server, though so polite, wasn't as attentive as she could be for the only people there. The food is definitely worth coming back for. read more
