Our beloved son took us out to dinner at Thai Charlie's (per our request) for our 40th wedding anniversary. We made a great choice. The original Thai Charlie's was our go-to in town. The 'new' owners have put their own spin on the dishes and a have fashioned a great place of their own. I think at some point they could even change the restaurant name to make it wholly theirs. The server who seated us was very friendly and put us at ease. She brought our menus very quickly and gave us more than adequate time to decide on our dishes. Well, I was the one who needed the time; my wife and son had seen the online menu and already knew what they wanted. We chose the Crab Rangoon, Fried Calamari, and Pork-Fried Rice (#1 spice) to share. The appetizers were brought quickly and were delightfully hot. The only glitch in the service here was when our server took away the empty dish with the sweet garlic dipping sauce still in the bowl. We still had uneaten Crab Rangoon on our plates. We should've told her to leave the dipping sauce but were too surprised to speak out. Note to us to speak out and a note to the server to ask before removing food or sauces from a table. Our entrees were brought out one at a time and the fried rice was brought out about the same time. I chose the Garlic Delight with Beef (#4 spice) , my wife chose Pad See Ew with Pork (#1 spice) and our son chose Pad See Ew with Beef (#4 spice). My dish was very good with just the right amount of heat for me. Our son is impervious to most hot spices but still liked his dish, and my wife also liked her dish with a hint of spice. I asked our server what type of meat was in my dish and the cook told her it was ribeye. That impressed me since most Asian restaurants used flank steak. The only criticism I had of the dish was that the ribeye should've been seared for extra flavor and texture, but it was still very good. We also noticed that the Pad See Ew was made with rice ribbon noodles instead of the traditional pad see ew noodles (which can be a bear to work with). Not sure why the restaurant made the substitution but I didn't ask about it. The servings here are impressive with an abundance of meat along with veggies and noodles. My wife and I also enjoyed Thai Iced Tea. So, delicious food, a delightful server who brought our food quickly which all made for a great wedding anniversary dinner. read more

Wow! I don't live in Port Orchard but every time I drive down town and drive by this place I say "I have to try this place sometime". Well, many many years later I finally just said I am driving to Port Orchard to go to Thai Charlies. OH MY GOSH! Why have I wasted so many years? I could have been enjoying this place for so many years. Well no problem now that I have been here I will become a regular! This place is a fantastic little gem. Very small but comfortable and the wait staff are so friendly. The food is amazing and portions are huge. I always order two things when I first visit a new Thai food restaurant. I get chicken satay and pad Thai with shrimp. So, I had to order those here. The chicken satay was like nothing I have ever seen before! Usually you get this thinly sliced piece of chicken on a skewer! Not here! Look at the picture you literally get chicken breasts cut in half, so I got two whole chicken breast cut into 4 piece... never seen anything like it. And the taste was amazing, they cooked the outside to almost crispy but the inside was moist and delicious. The peanut sauce was awesome they just don't give you enough to cover two large chicken breasts. The pad Thai was also amazing. They had a seafood addition for this one so I went for it, it had shrimp, clams, and calamari. The plate was so full that I will probably have it for 2-3 days a leftovers. The taste of the pad Thai was excellent the seafood was all freezer stuff so it was okay but not great. But the pad Thai didn't need any extras it was amazing on its own. I can never get pictures before I start chowing because it always looks and smells so good I can't stop myself, so excuse the already been eaten pictures. This is a must stop place, stop driving by like me and saying "one day I need to try that place". I am quite surprised and impressed with how authentic the Thai food is here. The service is great and the staff is very accommodating with making my dishes spicy. I had the Thai basil minced chicken with rice. Hot spicy (still not to Thai spicy level but good enough). I added the fried egg. A bit disappointed the chef did not fry it till the edges were crispy though the yolk was runny as requested. I asked for chili flakes to up the spice level. It was tasty. They made the Tom kha medium spicy for me. It was usually non spicy over here which was new to me. In all Thai restaurants I went to including Thailand, it was a spicy dish like Tom yum soup but with coconut milk in it. It was tasty and I could barely discern the heat in the medium spice level. They had a fair bit of take out orders and not many dine in customers. Maybe I was there too early around 5+ pm. Parking is available by the side. Walking distance from the downtown strip. read more

This was our first time going to Port Orchard to visit friends. They took us to one of their favorite places, Thai Charlie's, for dinner, and I can see why they love it - it was fabulous!! We have been to Thailand several times and had authentic Thai food. This was just as good, if not better than anything we had in Thailand. The restaurant is small and cozy with fun decor. Second time ordering to-go here and their food still misses the mark for me. We ordered pad see ew (1 star spice) and pandang curry (2 star spice). My pad see ew was too sweet and I could barely taste the spice. As I kept eating my food, all I could taste was the accumulation of brown sugar in the back of my throat. I usually order 2 stars, but ordered 1 star because you sometimes don't know how different Thai restaraunts level their spice. The 1 star felt like 0 star for the pad see ew. The pandang curry was a different story - 2 stars was way too spicy. It was all heat which took away from the flavor. I love pandang curry, but theirs was too hot for 2 stars and a bit too watery. They definitely needed to reduce the coconut milk more. Overall, it was a disappointing expierence. We didn't really enjoy our food and wouldn't order from here again. I ordered 2 pad see ew with 2 different levels of spice, spicy eggplant with tofu and curry puffs. I really like the curry puffs. They were slightly sweet because of the pastry and the filling was mainly potato. On the menu it says chicken and potatoes but there wasn't really any chicken in any of the 5 pieces I had. The pad see ew that I ordered for my son was a spice level 1 with just veggies and it was exactly right. The pad see ew I ordered for my sister was with chicken and spice level 3. They spiced both perfectly. And my spicy eggplant level 2 is the perfect amount for me as well. The noodles in both pad see ew were not as flavorful as others I've had. Thai fried rice: something in this was spoiled. It had a weird gummy texture and when tasted you could definitely tell one of in ingredients was spoiled. Husband actually spit it out without swallowing a single bite. Threw it away. Caramelized chicken crispy white meat chicken pieces were very dry BUT, that probably would have been off set by the sauce but, there was no sauce. Just dry fried chicken pieces. Pad Thai: YES! I loved Thai Charlie's when Charlie owned the restaurant. Even through the pandemic, he and his wife strove to keep the fresh, delicious food available. Now, there are different owners and the food is not really worth eating. Small portions, higher prices and flavorless. Today I ordered some satay and it had the consistency of shoe leather. The "cucumber salad" consisted of a tiny condiment container with a few slices of cucumber. The Tom Kha soup was completely bland. I attempted to doctor it up with some chile and soy sauce, to no avail. I ordered it with shrimp that came with an up charge of $3.00.....that came to $1.00 per shrimp. Even worse, they ruined my favorite dish, Pad Kee Mow with tofu. The entire take-out box is jammed packed with bland noodles (not the correct, really wide ones, either). So far, I've located three thin slices of dried out tofu, two minuscule pieces of broccoli and a rotten green leaf (perhaps once basil?). Sad. read more

I enjoy Thai Charlie's. We haven't been in a while as we were exploring Korean and Vietnamese food. We had visitors, so we decided to go to an old favorite. We had an assortment of dishes, with 8 of us, and I didn't hear any complaints. I had a prawn and avocado curry that I though was really nice. I got it 4 out of 5 stars on the heat scale. I found my curry both flavorful and spicy, but not just hot from a handful of red chili flakes. My wife had the Tom Kha soup, she didn't have it very spicy because she was sharing with our 10-year old, I had a taste and thought it was very nice, too. I'll store that in the memory bank for winter soup weather. I think someone had a TomYum soup, my eldest child had her usual tofu pad Thai. Overall we had a good assortment of items with various heat levels, it all came out quickly, and I think everyone was satisfied with their choices. read more

My friends and I ordered from this restaurant for dinner to go. I had the chicken pad see ew 5 stars. It was a good spice because other Thai places I can never get it to be spicy enough. The problem though is it's a dry spice flavor so the dish as a whole was really dry and even looked dry. It was hard to go down and if you go past the spice, everything was kinda bland. Let me start by saying I have been a loyal customer of Thai hut 2 in Tacoma by winco and famous Dave's for 8 years. Their employees, the owner, the food and establishment is phenomenal. I've also had chili Thai which is good in a pinch or Mondays when Thai hut is closed and you just gotta get that Thai fix. I've also had family Thai hut in gig harbor. Not good. Thai Charlie's! WOW! WOW! WOW! It was the first time I've ever ordered from here and I was skeptical because of the reviews. Which almost had me pick somewhere else. But man I'm glad I went with it! The price was reasonable. About $15 cheaper than I've paid for the exact same order at the other places. The girl who took my order was awesome, very friendly, kind, respectful and attentive even though she got bombarded by folks coming in to pick up right after I paid for my food and waited! Parking is terrible but there is parking across the street. Now! The food! Oh my days. I will honestly say it was the BEST Pad See Ew I have ever had. The flavor was incredible. The noodles were perfect. They're much thinner than the big wide 1.25" noodles I'm used to but man do they pack some flavor. The veggies in the See ew were amazing. The fried rice was on par with tahi hut 2 which makes me so happy. And the Penang curry was good. Tasted like it was lacking just a touch on the coconut cream side but almost on par with Thai hut 2. Thank you Thai Charlie's for making my first experience with you guys a good one. I will definitely be back and definitely will be telling friends and family about you guys. I wish I'd taken some pictures because even in the to go boxes the presentation was very neat and my sauce and curry didn't spill and the bag was dry when I got home. I ordered tofu pad thai for dinner and actually sat down for dine in. The food came out quick. The staff is super nice! However, it's definitely not close to how it tasted before. The tomato taste is definitely stronger. The noodles are over cooked. I'm more so reminiscing about my days coming out here with friends and family. After all, it was my favorite restaurant. I sure miss the old owners and I hope they are well. I will be back to try other dishes soon. Hopefully, it will be a better experience than the pad thai. read more

Wow! First time back in since covid, new owner & I'm impressed. We had satay, tempura shrimp, garlic pork ribs, garlic tofu & garlic chicken w rice. (Did I say we like garlic ). Each dish was presented well, came to our table quickly, was hot & very tasty. The seating area was well lit, clean & comfortable. Our server answered questions & was a delight. Needless to say, We Loved it. We highly recommend Thai Charlie's! When we were leaving, we found our friends car battery had died. I went in to let them know we'd called AAA & would be out of the way asap. The owner came out, repositioned his car & jumped started our friends car. We happily thanked him & headed off to get the car battery replaced. We were greatful for the above & beyond assistance. Happy, full & fixed - great experience. It looks like we found our new Thai place. As others have stated, the portions aren't as big as you'd get at other places, but I'd rather have tasty food, than too much food. For example: two entrees and one appetizer completely satisfied the two of us full, and my husband and I like to put away some Thai food. I wasn't at all in the mood for Thai food, but my husband won, and I was pleasantly surprised by how tasty the food was. For the food: -Fried Spring Rolls: Better than I expected. Full of a lot of veggies, but slight greasy. Otherwise great flavor. -Red Curry with Chicken: Decently good. It had full flavor, a little on the sweet side for me, but still had a nice flavor. Not too sweet that I wouldn't order it again. Full of bamboo shoots, maybe just a bit too many. I'd prefer more peppers or onions. Shrimp Fried Rice: Flavorful! My husband ordered it spicy, which I wouldn't do with rice, but it was really good. Packed with flavor. I'd definitely order this again. Still one of our favorite places to eat after so many years! We had an appointment in Port Orchard 5 months ago and we made a point to order dinner here because it'd been much too long. The food is delicious! I always crave the Tom Yum and it always hits the spot. The Pad Thai and Yellow Curry are a couple of our other usuals. The Fresh Spring Rolls and all the desserts are amazing. The top notch customer service is consistent and beyond awesome. Please patronize this establishment and tip generously -- because they are definitely a gem of Kitsap County. I take some time off and after a while think - I should try Thai Charlie's again.. Well tonight I came in at 7:30pm. Yelp says closing is at 8:30pm so I figured I had plenty of time for dinner. Immediately I was met with rude service. Immediately I was 'asked' if I wanted to go, but by asked I mean frowned upon that I said I wanted to stay. Then she further asked - I don't just want to take this home?. No lady, I'm trying to kill time right now and you're open until 8:30pm. I go to use the restroom and on my way back to my table I'm asked 'what do you want to drink?', before getting to my table and looking at the menu.. then I'm eating and in the middle the waitress drops the check and says 'do you want anything else' and I say 'I'm not sure-" but before I finish she drops the check and walks away. It's 8pm as I'm writing this now.. so I ask, are you guys not open until 8:30pm? Letting her know I had intended they have enough time for me to eat. Her response? We take to-go until 8:30pm. Very nice people but I wouldn't go back for the food...I've heard great things about this place from friends so I finally tried take out but the cost and taste left me very disappointed. I got 2 fresh spring rolls and green curry chicken. The spring rolls were sloppily wrapped and huge stuffed with mainly bean sprouts and Romain lettuce leafs--spines included. I got one shrimp per 6" wrap. The peanut dipping sauce was delicious though! The green curry was watered down as another reviewer mentioned and not very flavorful. The side of rice filled half the tiny to go container. These two items cost $30 which I wouldn't mind if the ingredients and flavors were good! The place itself is in a great location downtown Port Orchard but it felt very dirty inside. I won't be returning but if you do try something other than what I got for sure! read more

I ate here for the first time a couple weeks ago. Being a Port Orchard resident, I've passed it numerous times and finally had the pleasure of dining in this wonderful little eatery. The dining area is small and parking area is equally small, but there is always take-out option if you don't want to wait to dine in. The atmosphere is lovely and the staff was attentive, friendly and helpful in explaining the dishes. I had a luncheon combination with red curry tofu, pad thai and soup. Everything was delicious. If emotions could be expressed and sensed by the tongue, it was say how very happy it was to eat this! Bright, fresh tasting veggies and ingredients tasted as if it was prepared to order, not hours ahead like some restaurants taste. I went back for lunch again last week and had the pad thai - very good. I certainly eat here again. I wish it many 5 star reviews and continued great business. Service is always 10/10 I enjoy the Phad Thai and the Panang curry as well as the curry puffs, they are everything you would expect, the flavor is there and the food is fresh. I will admit portions are a bit smaller than the other places in Kitsap, although sufficient for me but no leftovers is a bit of a crime, right?! I was disappointed just slightly that there were only green beans in my panang curry, and one teeny-tiny slice of red pepper, the beans were crisp and fresh but I like a varsity of fresh veggies, none the less I'd order it again and ask for extra broth as that was light, very light considering in the rest of the Thai places I've been to give you a large bowl of simmering curry, this is more veggie with a small bit of soup. The area inside is small with only 7 tables and a very small bar area that is really just a wait area for to-go orders. I prefer to eat in as with any Thai place, I like my Thai food served and eaten fresh at the table, it's best that way. And the truth is I don't eat in here because I don't order anything more than curry puffs, BUT if I have to go to Port Orchard and if I'm in the mood I call in ahead for an order of curry puffs and maybe some panang curry. So what is a curry puff you ask? A curry puff is the lightest crisp pastry dough filled with minced chicken (not much), mashed potato with yellow curry, chicken broth, sautéed onion and maybe a tiny bit of garlic, all wrapped up into a dumpling, but not steamed just light and crisp, and not like a pan fried or greasy gyoza, a curry puff is more like an empanada but BETTER! Like an empanada with sass! They really are delicious, I want to say you get approx. 6 purses about the size of a gyoza for just over $7, it might seem spendy to some but it's not, (what isn't these days?) making pastry takes time and you have to pay staff! Anyway, my tip--they are closed between 2:30pm and 4pm, I didn't know this so I had to wait 40min to get my curry puffs last time! Would I travel an hour to eat a meal here, no, but I would for two orders of curry puffs! Oh and if I lived in Port Orchard I would eat here on occasion, me no like any other fake Thai food in PO. I honestly don't understand what just happened. I've been a regular Thai Charlie's customer for as long as they've been in business and I love their food. You can tell the character of a business owner by how they handle things when they don't go quite right, and sadly today Charlie failed that test. Here's what happened: I ordered a lunch combo via Door Dash and all I got was the entree part of the combo. I called Door Dash and they referred me to the restaurant, so I called Thai Charlie's. Charlie, who I've met many times and who has always been very friendly in person took my call. I told him what had happened and asked how I could get the rest of my lunch combo. Charlie said I'd have to call Door Dash. I told him I'd already called them and they said I had to talk to him. Charlie just kept talking over me the whole time and wouldn't listen to a word I said. I finally just let Charlie talk until he stopped and then I asked if *I* could talk without being interrupted. He agreed. I told him how happy I've always been there, that I wasn't upset about the order being wrong, but that I just wanted to get the rest of my lunch. Charlie started talking over the top of me again and told me that I'd have to call Door Dash (which I fully intend to do - again). He offered ZERO support and no other options to resolve this one local person to another. This makes me REALLY sad. I run a local business too and I'd move mountains to make sure my local customers are happy. This was an $8.95 order and I'm stunned by Charlie's willingness to throw away a good repeat customer of many years over something so insignificant. Very disappointed. read more
