BEST THAI IN LAWRENCE. I'm gonna start out my saying my mom does not like Thai food, but she loves Thai Siam. That's huge. Their soups are great, their curry is great, everything is great. What I love most is that they listen about your spice preference. I used to love going to another place in town but they started making the mild so volcanic that I couldn't eat it anymore. Thai Siam makes sure you're taken care of. I also love the lady behind the counter. She told me I should call in next time instead of door dashing so it's cheaper and I thought that was really sweet of her to mention. It's a small place but it's really clean inside. I'd gotten out of the habit of Thai Siam since moving to another part of town, but was looking for spicy soup, so made my way there last evening for takeout. I believe they're under new management(?); new phone number & new menu items posted. I ordered a medium size pho with sliced beef. Everything was freshly prepared, and a lady even came from the kitchen ti make sure I knew the assembly process, since it was takeout. We waited about 10 min for 2 entrees to be prepared; totally reasonable. I do love that you can sit at a table and watch the food being prepared. Their kitchen is SO clean! The broth was so yummy; bone broth with some hint of added spice... the jalapenos were partially seeded and cut thinly (I like spice, but not flames in my mouth). Years ago, I gave Thai Siam a 5/5. Recently, the original Thai owners sold it to some Vietnamese people. They added Vietnamese dishes. The best part about this place was the curry. It rivaled good curry in Thailand. Unfortunately the new owners changed everything. They don't use the good coconut milk anymore. They changed the vegetables. They changed the spice. Stopped by Thai Siam yesterday after avoiding it for *years*. I've always loved their food, but the last time we were in and ordered from the counter, it was a full 90 minutes before the first dish came out. Now under new ownership, the folks running the place are super-friendly and the food was phenomenal. I had a Pork Bahn Mi (my mouth is watering just thinking about it) and my husband had Tofu Noodles Kee Mow, which he is still raving about. We'll definitely be frequenting Thai Siam once again! read more

Sa, who owns the joint, is AMAZING. She goes out of her way to explain the dishes if you need help, the food is excellent, and very authentic. The food is fair priced and it is our favorite Thai food in town. Portions are generous and it always taste amazing. Love the beef pad see ew, crab Rangoon , and curries have all been delicious. However I'll mirror what most others have said about terrible customer service. If you are sensitive to being ignored I don't recommend you come here haha. I have ordered from here numerous times and I have to laugh at the service ( probably so I don't scream) because you could literally walk in and stand in the staff's presence and be ignored for 15 minutes without a hello. The previous reviews about the bad customer service and rudeness is hit or miss in my opinion. I have been here countless times and been greeted warmly and received my food with a smile. Other times I have witnessed some eye rolls and not so great phone etiquette. NONETHELESS the food is amazing and very consistent. This is one of the few restaurants I've been to over and over again and the taste constantly delivers. The paper wrapped chicken is probably the best thing on the menu, but it is just an appetizer. Between my husband and I we need two orders. I don't even know how to explain why it's so amazing but it is so moist and packed with flavor. It seems like marinated chicken thighs and then they fry it to perfection, but I can't put my finger on why it's so great! The shrimp and chicken lo Mein is always a go to and has a great flavor combination of celery, green onions, white onions, and sprouts. I'm not a huge fan of the fried rice because the onions are a bit overpowering, but this place is one of the most authentic Thai food you'll get in LFK. read more

Very good food, fair prices, less than stellar vibes. I picked up one order of green curry shrimp and an extra side of rice, which was easily 2 large entrees. Everything tasted very fresh and flavorful. The curry was a little thinner and oilier than I expected, but it didn't bother me because the taste was there. The curry also had a lot more fresh veggies in it than I expected, which was great. It was about $17 for the entree and the extra rice, which is reasonable and cheaper than my favorite Thai place in town. One star was lost because the restaurant itself is not very inviting and I wouldn't want to eat inside there. The cashier when I picked up (who I assume is an owner) was not friendly and didn't really interact with me besides asking the order name. Pad See Ew, say it 6 times fast. Well it's my favorite Thai dish ever and I crave this delicious dish multiple times a month so finding a place to get this is important. Well, I found it and it is good ! We ordered to go but didn't call it in we just ordered when we got there and it only took about 20 minutes from start to finish getting everything we ordered. Now to the ordering; we got the Beef Pad See Ew, Chicken Fried Rice, and Spring Rolls. They were out of spring rolls but one of the owners told my husband she could make them quickly for us because they had some more veggies and it wasn't a problem. Awesome because we really wanted those. The food was great, the pad see ew noodles were cooked perfectly and flavored so well with plenty of eggs and meat. The fried rice was so good and portion was great. Fried rice is a simple dish but so many people mess it up. The only complaint was the spring roll but it's ok I still ate it and I could drink the peanut sauce they give you to dip it in. All in all we will be back and I can't wait to try more of the menu. read more

Thai Siam, you are the strangest, quirkiest spot that I miss dearly in Lawrence. Thai Siam is authentic Thai Food, where a Thai family is always behind the stove whipping up delicious curries and noodle dishes. It's endearing that it's in an old Subway and it never fails to deliver on flavor. It's a place I was so hesitant to ever try because it looks like it's a snack bar at a baseball game with their blue and white menu sign. They also offer an array of crowd-pleasing Chinese dishes, but don't go that direction as it's not their area of strength. Thai is the forte here, through and through. Bottom line up front: I have been severely chided by the folks working here for reaching to get a to-go container. I mean, u-n-d-r-e-s-s-e-d in front of a packed house. I have had them hang up on me when they couldn't understand my to-go order. And that's the tip of the iceberg... But I'm pretty willing to overlook all of that to quietly shuffle through line for my soup..errr..curry. Still five stars. Another reason I'm willing to overlook some terrible customer service experiences is that they are ALWAYS working. I'd be a bit cranky too, but it helps their product stay 100% and I respect that. I highly recommend getting it to go and if you're a curry fan, they make a delicious Massaman curry with peanuts, onions, potatoes, carrots and a milder broth. Almost like a hybrid of Indian spices and Thai spices. For the spice lovers, their Panang and Green curries come chock full of veggies and so much flavor. They're usually pretty hot, but definitely not too hot to eat. One of their strongest areas though are their noodles. They've spoiled me on other Thai places because Thai Siam makes their noodles from scratch. With the Pad Sea Ewe, the thick, wide noodles completely soak up the wok flavors and are unbeatable. Their Pad Thai is a gigantic portion of deliciousness, and has a nice little kick to it if you ask for it. I think that about covers it, but I highly encourage you to have your expectations set and then give these folks a try. I took Beef broccoli to go and it tasted Okay, but my experience in this place was pathetic for many reasons First the packing of the food was very poor, so it spilled I made a big mess, photos attached. Second I ordered coffee from there which turned out to be very sweet, I asked the only guy who seems to speak english if he can make it less sweet, he didn't look at me or speak and looked to the other side and told the other lady about it who rolled her eyes and waved with her hands, in other words we cannot do anything for you!!! Cultural differences I'm sure play a role in this but still not very welcoming to new customers. Ambiance: Honestly, place is a disaster. ZERO seating inside. Cluttered with a bunch of personal items everywhere! Timely: Yes! I was told 20 minute wait, had food in hand in 25 minutes. Overall: I'll order the food again but only for pick up and will not walk in til my given time is up. All of the good reviews sure fooled me. I met with a few of my friends and this place wasn't what I expected or even what other Yelpers' reviews had me believe based on their review. First off, we waited close to 40 minutes for our food to come out to our table and we were the only ones in the restaurant at one point. Apparently, they didn't know how to divide up the cooking, because they cooked everybody's orders who ordered to-go either by phone or in-person first. This was fine except they could have divided up the cooking so one person would prepare all the to-go orders and the other for everybody in the restaurant. I ordered the Chicken Pad Thai ($7.95) and a soda for $10.49 total. My friends ordered the Beef Pad Sea Ewe, Chicken Masaman Curry, and the Chicken Lo Mein. The Chicken Pad Thai was nothing amazing and I've had way better. I tried some Beef Pad Sea Ewe and the beef was tough to eat. It might have been cooked a little bit too long. The Chicken Masaman Curry was good but oily and probably the only thing worth ordering out of our table's food. I didn't try the Chicken Lo Mein, but it didn't look like it tasted great. Based on those four dishes, I would recommend the Chicken Masaman Curry. I'm not coming back. read more

I just adore their Pad Thai, but I don't know if I can keep taking the customer abuse. I use to think it was funny how cranky they were, like Seinfeld soup nazi. But tonight after a long day with my husband at the hospital, I just needed comfort food. I walked in and said "pick up for Susan." The man started yelling at me to order with his wife, to not speak to him. Really yelling. She was 2 feet away and I was the only person in the store. He yelled a tirade about how he couldn't hear because of masks (they had them too), and that he was busy. I was stressed and tired and it is no longer funny. This couple doesn't really like their customers and must hate running this restaurant. Too bad, since they are talented. I've always forgiven them because it's just the two of them, and I'm sure it is a lot of work, but this was rediculous. I suggest Thai Diner. read more

Recently moved much further away from my beloved Thai Diner, but craving Thai cuisine, I decided to give Thai Siam a try. I called in a to go order (this being Life in the Time of Quarantine and such) and was quoted a time of 30 minutes. My husband and I ran a few errands and I arrived around 35 minutes later. The lady working the counter was so rude! My food was ready, but she snapped at me that she told me 30 minutes because she doesn't want customers in her store. I had already braced myself for her, so I just paid and left. And yes, there really is a booth (it's a former Subway) absolutely covered in stuff. I hate to admit the fare might be better than Thai Diner. TLDR: The fare is divine and the prices are fair, but expect to be yelled at. read more

My favorite 3-star restaurant in Lawrence. Stop laughing. It's depressing. A former corporate Subway, you and your fellow diners will be bathed in the finest glow-in-the-dark neon yellow tables and chairs from 1989. The restaurant itself can be very busy, stuffy, hot and noisy. You might need to wait a bit. It's a small joint, the staff is limited and sometimes the language barrier doesn't work in your favor. But I come here for the that one guilty pleasure, a better version which can only be found via a 35 mile drive to Kansas City: red curry chicken, Thai hot. For those times when I need the fix, I can be assured I'll be sitting at the end of the meal with tears in my eyes, a burning mouth and that feeling of "why, why do I need this so?" The sweetness of the coconut milk mixing with the aromatic Thai basil, the pleasant first crisp taste of the red peppers, a burst of protein with chicken (my choice) or shrimp, and then comes the heat. That heat, intense, unrelenting. The rice is nicely moist and there's plenty of it, and the entire dish is an enormous amount that'll have you knowing... there'll be more to come... tomorrow. Probably best saved for those nights when carry-out is your option or catch them at a down time. It can be busy. Know this, it's a joint, but the food is typically pretty rewarding. Go for the taste, not the ambiance. When a hot curry is this good, the decor is pretty low on the list. read more

This review will be shorter than most because I only had takeout for myself. I ordered egg rolls (2 for $2.25) and the Panang Beef Curry ($9.99). When I asked what was in the curry, I was told that there was "beef, curry, Thai basil, carrots and peanuts". I love beef, curry, basil and peanuts, but I do not like cooked carrots and they REFUSED to substitute potatoes or green peppers for the carrots. "We do not make substitutions" - not very flexible. There was far too much fat (oil) floating on top and not nearly enough beef in the curry. I will say it once again for the second time in a week ... "hey Wendy, where's the beef?". In fact, there was so much oil that I skimmed 3-4 ounces off the top (see photos), all I could, and there was still too much fat. The flavor, once de-fatified, was not bad, but I can get a much better and cheaper Panang Beef Curry at Zen Zero on Mass Street for $1.70 less and I do not have to eat carrots. The egg rolls were egg rolls, possibly made in house, but much like the curry, too greasy. I can feel my arteries clogging as I sit here writing this two hours later. If I were to die of a heart attack in my sleep tonight, I am sure this meal would be a contributing factor. Yes, it can take a while for the food to come out. Yes, the cook (owner??) can become grumpy (and argumentative) if you ask about the food taking a long time. But, this is the best green curry I've ever had. It's all I've ever gotten here, because it's THAT good. It's sweet, spicy, and full of flavor. You also get a ton of food, but I always seem to finish it because I can't stop eating!!! I've also tried my fellow diner's panang curry, which was wonderful, though not as good as the green curry. It's a bit thicker than the green curry, and has a deep peanut flavor. It's in an old Subway, so seating consists of the yellow Subway booths. The dining room is a bit tight, space-wise, but we've never had a problem finding a place to sit. It's worth a try. Get the green curry if you go!! read more

We love Thai Siam and get food from there a couple times a month. Everything on the menu is good, but our favorites are the Pad Thai, Beef/Chicken with basil, and Beef Tendon Noodle Soup. The owners are always the ones cooking the food and usually taking orders as well. I imagine they put in a lot of hours. We have not experienced any unfriendliness, but they can come off as abrupt at times. For the price and quality of food, Thai Siam is a great option. read more

I ordered the Green curry for $12.99 with tofu, and an order of crab rangoon for $5.99 for pick up. The green curry was good, vegetables fresh, fried tofu tasty, but for 12.99 it's half the quantity it should be. The curry sauce itself was more soup like then curry... Runny... I expected it to be thicker. The crab Rangoon are over fried... And not as good as where I usually get them at China House. Still edible and the sweet-and-sour sauce that came with saved the day for those. I probably will eat there again but I'm going to look for a more economical choice from the menu. You do get two meals out of it... For one person as it was for me... But I'm used to getting at least three out of any sort of Asian takeout. read more
