I guess the people giving this place good reviews have never tasted Thai food before. I ordered Tom Yum soup and Drunken Noodles. The Tom Yum broth tasted like fishy dishwater, and totally lacked galangal, lemongrass, and kaffir lime leaf, which are the essential ingredients. The drunken noodles lacked Thai basil, which gives the dish its signature taste. I was also informed, when I asked for prik nam pla, that they did not have any Thai chiles. I feel sorry for the elderly couple which runs the place, but if I were a Thai person presenting such non-authentic Thai food to the public, I would be ashamed of myself. I know Thai chiles, galangal, Thai basil, kaffir lime leaf, and lemongrass are all available, year round, in this part of the country. Without Thai ingredients, you are just preparing some quasi-Asian slop. Life is too short to eat bad Thai food. read more

Meh. It may have been the time of night that we sat down for dinner-8:30 but the food was underwhelming. It wasn't bad by any means but a far cry from other Thai restaurants I've been to and ordered from in the Boston & South Shore area. We ordered fried dumplings, duck curry and crispy pad Thai. All of the dishes were barely warm and came out so quickly that it made me think they had been sitting out and not freshly made. I definitely plan on coming back and trying this place again in hopes that this first time was just a fluke. read more

Lovely owners, and every dish we had was excellent. We had the laab salad, the red chicken curry and the tom yum goong (sp??) soup and it was all delicious. We enjoyed sitting outside and watching the witch tours (or ghost tours) go by (learning for free!) and the gardens the owner has planted are very pretty. Definitely recommend this place. Also, the cocktails were great. We had mojitos and Mai Tais and they were perfect. I can't drink a cocktail made from bottled mixers, and these were fresh and delicious. read more

Ate here the other day, very inexpensive and the food was great!! Crab rangoon appetizer came out nice and crisp and tasting great. Kids had chicken dishes, they were both blown away. Wife and I had curry dishes, she had shrimp and I had tofu. Really good, spice level was on point. Our waiter came by a few times just to make sure it wasn't too hot, ha ha. Lunch menu was very cheap and well worth it. Will definitely go there again, whether to take advantage of the low priced lunch or I will check out dinner there. If Salem is the place to go for the macabre, then this restaurant is the place Thai food goes to die. If I could give this restaurant less than 1 Star, I would. I would wholly and respectfully disagree with reviewers who rated this restaurant a 5 Star with the hyperbole of it being the best Thai restaurant they have had; they have clearly not been exposed to many options. Atmosphere was a blunder. The restaurant is located in segue between a strip mall and Salem haunted tours, that should have been, as homage to Poe, a 'tell-tale' sign, but I trusted it would not be terrible simply through its garnishment of 3 Stars. We walked into a somewhat graveyard restaurant with napkins and paper straw wrappers strewn about on the stained maroon carpeted floor, chipping garishly green wall paint, flattened seat cushions faded beyond threads from its once royal-like Thai silk, but okay, maybe this restaurant has better fare than its atmosphere might suggest. NOPE. We ordered beef satay, pad sey u, tofu green curry, and chicken red curry. I cannot begin to describe HOW BAD THE FOOD WAS. The beef satay tasted like the salt monger seasoned it; we split one and a half between the four of us and left the rest untouched. The pad sey u whose typical fat rice noodles are separately glossy were instead flatly glued together with a stingy tossing of brown sauce, dried overcooked thin slices of chicken, and uncooked broccoli plentiful in stalk. The tofu green curry and red curry were DISASTROUS. This restaurant by many markers, wins the superlative for the absolute WORST CURRIES I have ever had. The curry was very watery and tasted like the chef took a would have been palpable amalgam of spices and doused it with a very very generous helping of water in order to save on the coconut milk costs. There is a mandatory 18% tip FOR EVERYONE, regardless of party size. Where is this posted, you might ask? Not on the menu. Not in the front of the restaurant. Not anywhere really visible. Where? On the little menu holder underneath the fake flowers at each table. So for some of you who don't imbibe in liquid courage, good luck being made aware of this. Mind you, my husband and I are very generous tippers (being one in college and knowing the plight) and our usual 'mediocre service' tip is always 20%. My complaint is that it is 1. Not visibly posted and 2. The owner is a witch, maybe literally. When I inquired about the added charge on our bill, I was told by our very nice server to speak to the owner at the front. When I approached her, she was too busy calculating the receipts of the restaurant that night to even look up and acknowledge me. Some yelling ensued and her 'underling' (that's how the owner treated her workers) appeared. I once again asked about the charge to the other server who was beckoned and immediately, the owner, again, not even looking up at me, grabbed the tiny alcohol menu and started to YELL at me about how "it's posted everywhere, at every table, in the whole restaurant". I thanked the nice server whose eyes even lit up at the monstrosity of the witch owner and my family quickly departed this place. If this is your LAST RESORT and you have an uncontainable and insatiable craving for Thai food...even then, DON'T GO! You'll be paying for salt and water, two things you can get for FREE a few streets from this place, by the pier. read more

I HAVE NEVER HAD THAI THAT RATED ABOVE A 3 ON THE NORTH SHORE. Went here for lunch after a visit to PEM. This was my second time to Thai Place, the first was 2 years ago for dinner. Lunch was a non plus. I thought the prices were high for the portion sizes. The pad thai I ordered did everything it could to leave me unimpressed. Watery noodles and dry chicken, nice contrast. The flavor was not well balanced, fish sauce should not make your mouth pucker. The rainbow fried rice however was a bright spot. Freshly prepared with curious ingredients, raisins and corn? Who knew, but it worked. The dinner experience in 2008 was slightly better, but to long ago to really count. All in all it gets a solid three for not giving us the stink eye as the daughter repeatedly got up to inspect the fountain and the younger brother was engrossed in getting as much of his food off the plate and onto the table, or floor. Thai Place has decent Thai food, some of the best in the North Shore area. The owner is always there and she is extremely sweet and talkative! The decor of the restaurant is a bit outdated but it goes with the overall theme of the restaurant. The menu is very large, and many of the dishes are pretty good. For appetizers, I enjoy the chicken satay, scallion pancakes, silver noodle soup, and Thai spring rolls. The entree portions are on the smaller side, and the pad Thai is definitely some of the better I've had in the area. The sizzling shrimp dish is beautiful to look at, as they serve it in a cast iron skillet and pour the sauce on it as it is being served, so it bubbles. The Pad See Ew and Drunken Noodles are also tasty dishes. At the end of the meal, the bill always comes with an assortment of Halloween candy (Reese's, Kit Kats, etc) which is always a nice treat! They take reservations but you probably don't need them. Overall, Thai Place serves a good meal. read more

After going to Thai Place a few times before my baby was born I was satisfied with their food but not necessarily their service. Their location in the Salem mall allows them to take advantage of the movie goers heading to CinemaSalem. On Mondays the theater has movies for moms and the movie ends around noon. 3 times I went with about 4 moms and their babies and each time the hostess/owner asked us if our babies were going to cry and if we would eat quickly. When the entire restaurant is empty except for customers with babies, I think you should consider being a little nicer to the customers you have. Each time we went we tried to enjoy ourselves, but the nervous hostess would hover over us shhhushing our babies and worrying about them crying. Most of the time our babies slept through the entire meal. She is also not a big supporter of breastfeeding which changed once I showed her a card printed with the law in MA that protects breastfeeding moms from harassment. The last time I went there with friends we had a party of 4 moms and 4 babies. She asked if the babies (only a few months old) were eating. When we said no she mumbled something about only 4 eating customers in a party of 8. She rushed us to order and then with an $80 bill was stubborn about giving two of us parking validation stamps (the sign posted says they will validate with an $8 purchase). She also did not want to make change for me, and when I told her her we wouldn't leave until she broke my $20 told me that her restaurant was not a good place for babies. In addition to these complaints I also have to say that the 3 other times I stopped in for take out she complained that my stroller was too big and I should wait (not in the empty restaurant) but out in the mall. If this restaurant goes under I can only guess it might be because people are made to feel rushed, and uncomfortable. DO NOT bring your kids here! read more

thai place restaurant was an unexpected surprise. walking into a ghost mall in salem doesn't usually prompt one to say "oooh! thai food!" but this small, obviously oddly occupied space produces excellent thai food at a very reasonable price. my benchmark for any thai restaurant, particularly those that i'm not familiar with is usually their pad thai. this place does it right. noodles with spring and taste, that have just the right amount of sweet and salty flavoring, and an assortment of proteins (I believe you can request vegetarian). i found that this pad thai was better than that offered at bangkok paradise (though their atmosphere brings a lot of people in compared to the thai place restaurant) which is usually too sweet for my taste. just to note, they offer a huge menu, that extends to other asian fares, including japanese nabeyaki udon, and various chinese dishes. i haven't ordered any of the other international dishes, because i'm usually too enticed by the thai dishes, and i believe that sometimes a restaurant should stick to their guns. but it does seem like the menu offers a good vegetarian variety, which i know people are always on the lookout for. also, just fyi, i almost always get the fresh rolls appetizer (with shrimp). the restauranteurs offer two sauces: the usual peanut sauce, and then a sort of sweet and sour sauce pioneered at this restaurant. an excellent starter. if you're in salem during peak halloween season without a dinner reservation, this may be a good place to head to. i also have to say that the hostess is absolutely delightful. perhaps one of the nicest ladies i've ever met. attentive, smiling, and always keen to offer information on the menu. read more

This is my favorite place for Thai food. The food is always good. The service is very friendly and fast. The owner always remembers me and even gave me & my bf a Xmas gift this year & last year. I live up in NH now & I still drive to Salem, MA just to eat here. The veggie Pad Thai is my favorite dish. Try the banana dumplings with ice cream for dessert (ginger ice cream is the best). Where do I start!? This place is fabulous, I just love it there. The food is excellent and the service is outstanding. The owner, she is just the sweetest human being I think I've ever met, she always remembers us and our kids... She even gave my children a gift during Christmas time. I always feel at home there, never rushed. There was one time when we were there and my baby got sick, she gaged on some food and threw up. I was horrified and immediately sprung into action to scrub all surfaces, etc ... The owner came over and just smiled and kept saying don't worry, is she ok? Her only concern was that my baby was ok. She kept telling me not to clean, that they would do it, but of course I did it. I just can't rave enough about this place! Went for dinner while in Salem for their Halloween events/tours. Only restaurant that didn't have a line, which I know is a bad sign, but we had kids in tow and no other options other than to wait in a line. Service was poor and food quality was fair to poor. After being seated we were ignored, even tho the restaurant was less than half full. We eventually had to get up and speak with staff to get service. We were a party of 6 all ordering standard dishes - pad thai, vegetarian (Siam Delight), a shrimp tofu dish, and stuff from childrens menu. Nothing exotic. They brought out 2 of the 6 entrees, then we waited and waited, then they brought out 2 more, waited again, then finally the last 2 entrees were served. We all wanted to eat together, instead were served and ate in shifts! The food was incredibly bland with none of the freshness, spices or herbs that make flavors pop. Sauce on all dishes was same dull brown color with no flavor. Rice was tasteless. Chicken tenders from childrens menu were greasy. Interesting note on menu - it was on 3 pages of regular 81/2" X 11" paper stapled at top, not laminated, not bound, not even on heavy duty paper. read more

If there was a way to put less than 1 star I would. The service was incredibly slow and the food was awful. We had 6 in our party and three ordered Massaman curry-2 chicken, 1 seafood. The curry was totally watery, chicken over cooked; the seafood had 3pcs of actual seafood and it was completely rubbery. One ordered the Thai steak -the the cut of meat was so poor that any way it was cut was gristle filled and chewy. Two fried rice orders were actually decent so that was the ONE bright spot. Service was slow and inconsistent. Overall a terribly disappointing experience. Don't waste your time or money on this place. read more

I feel like most of the people who love this place are locals who've been going there for ages. It's not really the kind of place you desperately want to show off to all your swank out-of-town friends, but if you have less swank out-of-town friends who'd be interested in a local place, maybe you could show it off to them in that case. Also, the prices are pretty good, and look even better when you compare it to a lot of places in downtown Salem. No, the food is not high-end uber authentic Thai cuisine. However, it is on the whole pretty tasty. The family who owns it are Thai and I figure if it's good enough for them, it's good enough for me. The woman who appears to be the principal owner is wicked sweet; sometimes a little bit hard to understand, as her English is not the greatest, but you can usually get the gist of what she's saying, and it's all nice. If you have a big group, you will probably not have a hard time getting space, as it's usually not overly crowded. Not to be missed is the East India Mall in which this restaurant resides. It is probably the worst mall on the North Shore and is largely responsible for the occasional empty dining room at Thai Place. However, it is hilarious. There's a random curio-type shop directly across the way that has been in business forever despite the fact that I do not think it has ever made a sale and might in fact be an opium-smuggling operation. Pure cracky Salem awesome. The building is attached to an entire frigging multi-story parking garage, so I don't know what people are talking about with parking difficulties. The only time I've ever had trouble is if the nearby Peabody Essex Museum is having some sort of huge event and has guerilla-commandeered all parking in the area. read more

Beware 18% service charge! The sign on the table reads "We reserve the right to charge you an 18% service charge". Translation is "We WILL CHARGE YOU an 18% service charge no matter what." I was very VERY disappointed with this place, considering I love Thai food. My dad, my toddler son, and I went on a day trip to Salem and decided to eat here for dinner. My dad ordered the pad Thai, which was supposed to come with shrimp, chicken, and peanuts. It only came with chicken, and my dad said it didn't taste very good. I feel bad because he paid full price for something he did not get. I'm a vegan. The menu didn't seem very vegan friendly. One of the dishes in the "vegetarian" section came with oyster sauce. I ordered the "tofu supreme" which was basically a ton of bean sprouts with a few pieces of tofu. The sauce was ok...but the dish as a whole was very bland and disappointing. The service was awful too. We asked if there was anything vegetarian on the kids' menu for my son, but the waitress told us there wasn't. And they couldn't custom make a vegetable dish for him so we had to pay for a full order of bland fried tofu that he barely touched. I usually don't write reviews, but I felt like I had to share this experience because I don't think it's right. I ordered honey pork for togo during dinner. I was in a rush and they were 15 min to closing so I felt bad for ordering last minute. Still they told me to make an order and that it will be ready in 15. They made me pay $16. I was on my way home and the togo box starting leaking and I got drenched by the sticky sauce everywhere and I thought that was okay because it happens. But then I was very disappointed to see 3 chunks of hard pork. No rice. Nothing. I had to come back home and make my own rice to go with it. And I paid $16 for it. I checked online later to see that it was originally listed for $12.95.... Feeling sort of scammed and disappointed by the food. Definitely not worth the price. Edit: started eating the food and I just don't think I can eat it. Tastes like honey rubber and the sauce it too sweet.... ended up making my own dinner. what a waste of perfectly good $16.... read more

I had heard this was one of the first Thai restaurants in the area and hoped it would be a great experieince. Was disappointed though. Maybe I am just a purest but why does there need to be non-Thai items on the menu. When I go to a Thai restuarant I do not expect to see Chinee dishes or American dishes fro that matter. I ordered Panang Curry with scallops. I love Panang Curry so thought it would be a good dish to judge the place by. Thin sauce without a robust flavor- meh!. I added two dumplings to the order and they were pretty good- fried small dumplings that looked house made. Decor was tired, menu looked tired but the staff was super friendly. I don't know what to tell people that write reviews for Salem Restaurants during Halloween but they might as well not bother. So many good restaurants get bad reviews because people write them when they go when Salem is at its busiest and look surprised when they have to wait or they were busy. Rant over. (I'm protective of local restaurants that have to keep up with the chaos). Soups were good, the chicken curry dish was good. Mimosa was good.
