Terrible - we were stuck in a back room with absolutely no atmosphere - the food must have been sitting around for a while because it tasted terrible. I had moo shi pork. The pancakes could be used to repair old car tires. The rest was just as bad. In their favor they knocked $2 off an $100 bill because I pointed out the pancakes that were inedible. I ate at Gourmet Garden in Swampscott yesterday. I ordered the beef teriyaki with white rice and I informed the waiter how bad it was, and he did absolutely nothing to assist. The beef was so overcooked, it was burnt with overcooking and the rice, amazingly , was very undercooked, hard, only moderately cooked rice that was inedible. Okay if things are off but the waiter really refusing to compensate is inexcusable . The broccoli was improperly cooked, tasted dehydrated. We were told this place was good by a local so we decided to try even though not great reviews....what a mistake. Our waiter was a little rude. Food was meh not horrible but not great. WARNING....DO NOT TRY THE MUSTARD SAUCE THAT COMES WITH THE EGG ROLLS ITS TOXIC. Also no description of what was in the egg rolls and some were pork and some had shrimp. I can't believe I walked around this earth for 34 years and have never tried Gourmet Gardens. When I made my red carpet entrance, I was greeted immediately. The lady said "We've been waiting for you" I was confused. Especially with all the cameras flashing. As stunned and confused as I was and smiling away, I realized I was day dreaming and had to come back to reality. "Table for two please" Our waiter was nice. Sat us down and 2 seconds later comes back and asks us if we wanted something to drink. In my head I'm like Ummm I already know what type of night this was going to turn out to be smh. I said "you know why I'm here" Marshawn Lynch's voice The mais tais I got was unbelievably good. It was PERFECT. Taste like juice but strong as well. They were so lucky I had only two. I wanted to make a somewhat good impression considering it was my first time there. Didn't want to leave stumbling and possibly embarrassing myself. :] JK it was really really GOOD. The rainbow maki was like they just reeled the fish in and cut it up, rolled it and served it, that's how fresh it was. The snow mountain maki was like food porn. FUCKING AMAZING. We live in Swampscott and we have been ordering takeout more due to the pandemic. Me and my husband try to support small businesses. This evening we ordered steak pepper and onion, shrimp fried rice, eggroll, and egg foo yong for dinner. We were eating at the kitchen table and were talking and I bought into my eggroll and this long piece of strand of hair follows my bite. I literally jumped up from the table and ran to the bathroom. It was horrible I have never experienced anything like that before. And me and my husband like I said we support small businesses and we eat there all the time. It was disgusting and horrible, my husband took the half of the eggroll with the long strand of hair still in it and put it in a Ziploc bag. He left and went back to the restaurant to show them. They gave us our money back, but that just changed everything for me as far as eating takeout. I am just going to be cooking for a while. FYI... We have visited hibachi restaurants up and down the East Coast, from Vermont to Florida, and 4 different locations in the Salem/Swampscott/Danvers area, and nobody does hibachi like Gourmet Garden. Good Hibachi is easy to come by, Vermont, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and Florida have proved that. Great Hibachi is something above and beyond anything you have experienced before. It's the trifecta of service, flavor and entertainment. Gourmet Garden has consistently provided all three. No matter what night of the week, make a reservation with them for hibachi, you won't be disappointed. I also want to say a special thank you to Manager Lin. You and your fellow manager have much to be proud of. It's no wonder you have been there for 20 years and counting. By far the worst Chinese food I have ever had. Spring rolls for 2 is $7.00? Vegetable tempura for $8.00 that is soggy and no variety. Sweet and sour chicken which was just golden fingers drizzled in sweet and sour sauce. The worst vegetable delight I've ever had. And to top it off neither "entree dinners" included white rice so that is an extra charge. Only good thing was the Mai tai. Do not order online. Call! Yesterday I ordered online and they said my order would be ready at 6:48. I showed up at 6:50 and they hadn't even sent my order to the cooks. They didn't offer a drink or discount or even apologize while I waited 20 mins for my order. Then when the order did come they put it with the other 20 pick up orders. My beau and I have dined here several times and overall, decent food. Credits to this establishment. The menu itself consists of a vast variety, everything from Chinese, Thai, Sushi, even Hibachi! This is great for people who would like something alongside their Chinese food. We really enjoyed the happy garden dish. It's similar to a neptune basket or birds nest, whichever other establishments label it as. It does come in a wonton wrapped basket which was different than I normally encounter, but still enjoyable. We did order sushi. I am always a bit skeptical when ordering sushi from a place that doesn't specialize in just Japanese, but nonetheless it was delicious. My beau mentioned the eel was quite tasty. I will comment that I'm not really fond of some of the sauces on particular dishes. The Thai ribs we had recently tasted as if they were drenched from the sauce bottle made for egg rolls. If you don't know what that is, it's an "egg roll" sauce that can be bought at all Asian supermarkets. The sweetness can be intense! It did not do the dish any justice. But the ribs itself were soft and tender, definitely something I would order again without the sauce. On to the cons..., most obvious, service. I only wished they were more attentive. read more

The fried rice was okay; I am not a huge fan of fried rice that's on the white side, but that's just a personal preference. Mediocre is all I really can say about this place. Hibachi tables are dirty when they start the shown with food trapped in the corners. The "show" was uneventful with no talking or interaction by the chef. This is part of the price at any hibachi restaurant. The servers were non existent to ask for drink refills or to help us to swap out a dirty plate before the dinner was cooked. I ordered the lobster, shrimp and scallop combo. Scallops were completely undercooked and when I told them they brought back after I was finished eating the most disgusting scallops I have ever had. They cut them in half and left them with grill marks that were charred and flavorless. The only drinks that they asked if you wanted another were money drinks, not sodas or waters. Plenty of hibachi places to eat at and they will be my next options as this place is not what I would consider quality. Walking in I have always been treated pleasantly. Most off the staff here is very friendly and have worked here for many many years. We were seated immediately and the flow of the dinner was smooth. We opted for hibachi and once we put our food orders in, we had salad within about 5 minutes. The side salad is served with a ton of the ginger dressing, it was good as usual, but I basically had salad soup. I'd say it was probably about 10-15 minutes later that our chef came out to cook. He was also friendly and entertaining. He put on a good little show and we were all smiles. The fried rice was really good, it was not mushy and was cooked just perfectly. The salmon was delicious, not too salty, not too sweet, and really left me just wanting more. We overheard at the table next to us that they had actually run out of salmon and I now understand why and I'm just glad I got mine. The steak was good, nothing spectacular, a little tough, but flavor wise was on point. Shrimp was really fresh and also cooked perfectly; it didnt have a rubbery texture and I was pretty sad that it only came with two(I didnt order shrimp, it just comes with all hibachi orders). And then the veggies, just like all the other food, was seasoned to perfection, was not over cooked, but cooked just enough to still have a little crunch. We all cleared our plates and didnt leave feeling disgusted with ourselves. We don't stay and just hang out as it was kind of late, we weren't rushed and we never waiting too long for anything. We eat here often. Its definitely our go to sit down Chinese/ Japanese/ hibatchi style restaurant. They are pretty good but could be a tad better in terms of service. Seems there are always 12 semi-cranky waiters or waitresses around but never the one you need. They have three menues and I have never been disappointed. I've had sushi from the bar. Teriffic! I've had Chinese - the fried rice and the crunchy beef are to die for. Tonight was a little shady as the lobster tail I ordered on the hibatchi side had a fishy taste and no one wants to pay for a fishy lobster tail! Everything was pretty good otherwise. This used to be my go to for local sushi. Tonight's food was awful! I had undercooked edamame with no salt. The fish in the sushi was not fresh and I had to spit out sone of it. The rolls were dry and tasted as if they had been sitting around. I had an insane amount of ginger but no wasabi paste. It was absolutely inedible! I won't be going here anymore. This is a date night staple for my wife and me when we're up at my parents' place in Marblehead. Mainly because there are so few good sushi options in the vicinity, and our one experience with Maki in Peabody was disappointing (as was our experience at Kame in Beverly). There's very little that GG does wrong. Which is not to say it's stellar. It's solid. The decor is what you'd expect from a suburban Asian restaurant. The service is decent. The sushi is unimaginative but good. The beer and wine menu is traditional. They dim the lights and pipe in a Japanese version of "Happy birthday" when it's someone's birthday. My only pet peeve: I wish the hibachi area was separate from the main dining room, as large groups can be distracting. But no biggie. I was too engrossed in my Tsingtao, spicy salmon roll, eel w/cucumber roll, and tekka maki to notice. read more

He proceeded to ask a young lady at the other end of the front counter with a co-worker; which seemed we were bothering her.
