This is, by far, the best Thai food in town. And no matter what other people say, you won't get yelled at if you aren't rude or pushy. If you eat there regularly and are not a butthead, the owners are extremely nice and hospitable. I personally appreciate their no-nonsense approach. I recommend the green curry. Other places have okay green curry, but never as many veggies as Thai Siam, and I love that. It is a bit spicy though, I sometimes get it without jalapeños. Well, there is much to say about this place, very little of it is good. Suffice to say, I liked this place just fine when it was the only game in town for Thai food. Now it is simply third best out of three. In addition to the mediocre food, which seems to decline in quality steadily but surely, you get to contend with the ambience. Thai Siam is the best Thai food I've been able to find in Lawrence. Other Thai restaurants are cleaner, better decorated and have friendlier service, but their food isn't good. The Tom Ka Kai soup is outstanding. The cucumber salad is simple and delicious. The spring rolls with the peanut sauce is a favorite. I recommend sticking to the Thai items on the menu, but I have to mention the sweet and sour chicken. The chicken pieces are breaded and fried like crispy fried chicken pieces. They're served with pineapple, onion and green pepper pieces with the usual sweet and sour sauce on the side. It's truly delicious and refreshing not to have the usual soggy battered chicken swimming in an overwhelming amount of red sugar sauce. The Pad Thai is good as is the Panang. read more

This is only one authentic Thai restaurant in Lawrence. I recommend fried tofu (in appetizer) and any kinds of curry here. The fried tofu is very crispy and delicious. I think their sauce is too sweet. They cook any kinds of curry very well. The hardest part of the Thai curry cooking is to cook until the coconut milk have an oily sheen--somebody may think it is unhealthy but the curry with or without the oily sheen have the same amount of fat and calories (just a different look). They cook the curry well and very authentic. If I pick one from the curry list, I would pick the Thai curry with grilled duck. You cannot find it easily in US (even in Thailand). Their pad Thai is as good as you can get in Lawrence. Sometimes, it is too oily and too sweet for me. The ingredient for their pad Thai is not complete compared to what I had in Thailand. I think the pad Thai from Bangkok Pavilion in Overland Park is closer to what I had in Thailand. Their pad kee mow is good but not one of the kind. Other dishes I have tried are okay. Any Seinfeld fans? I know it's an old show, but it will help you understand my 'review'. The food is obviously really good, but watch out for the "Thai Nazi" / dragon lady. It is seriously just like the soup place in the Seinfeld episode. "NO THAI FOR YOU!" I have, on a couple occasions, had nightmares about her. lol. Great food, but do not look her in the eyes or you may turn into a pile of red pepper flakes. Now for a short funny/sad story: I was in there once and we got our order, but we were short a soup. So, I reluctantly and fearfully went up to tell them... one thing led to another... after a little yelling she ended up firing this young college kid on the spot. I felt so bad... like I was responsible for his termination (yet again Seinfeld episode where George gets a dude fired)... the poor guy turns around as he exits and says "Welcome all to Thai Siam, best service in TOWN!!" My boyfriend and I walked into Thai-Siam at around 9:59, right as they were shutting off the "OPEN" sign. I started to back out and tell my boyfriend they were closed, when the man behind the counter beckoned me back in and asked what I wanted. It's nice to see a Thai establishment this far from the center of the KC metro but after trying a few of the dishes with a crowd of friends, I really didn't have anything that left me impressed or really yearning to go back. For a college town though, I would have to say this is very subpar Thai food. The customer service here on the other hand was absolutely horrible. Messy tables everywhere. It seems like the son of the owner just sits behind the counter and yawns all night long. We actually had to ASK them to clean a table for us. This was a complete disregard for their eating area. I love the tofu pad thai. It's ruined me because I cannot go anywhere else for thai food. This is definitely not a place you go if you want a great venue to hang out. It is a exactly as others have mentioned - an old subway with hardly any remodeling. This is great for takeout though. Typically I call ahead and pick up my food. The wait isn't too long though if you just order in the shop. Not because of a line or anything, but because they make your food fresh. The food is a large portion too. Typically it will last me for two meals. I do wish they did delivery. Update 5/24/12: I went in and had a horrible experience. They burnt my food and when I tried to communicate that to the cook she got upset and started yelling at me. Little weird, especially since I DO actually know what their food normally tastes like. I have eaten here before, about ten years ago, and it was great. I went there tonight, prices had gone up quite a bit, which is fine, but my experience was pretty sour. the lady who took my order seemed incredibly annoyed, was super short with me and looked at me like i was insane when i asked her details about the menu items. I'm pretty sure she's one of the owners. there was one table in the diner so i am not sure why she was so stressed, but it was what it was. there was no hello how are you, no thank you, nothing. it just sucked. i had been looking forward to revisiting a good thing and was highly disappointed. i serve for a living and the bottom line is be nice to your customers even if you don't wanna be there. just be nice to people in general. i hope people don't experience this negativity where I work. read more

Wow. This place has gone downhill since I last had it in 2006. In college, my roommate and I essentially lived on Thai Siam, and we loved everything they cooked up. The place was always a little divey, but it's in a strip mall, so we weren't going to judge. After what I experienced last week, however, I'm more than ready to judge. I walked in to a moderate lunch crowd. Didn't have to wait very long in line before ordering, so I was pleased about that. After filling up my soda, I turned to find a table. In the booth directly in front of the ordering counter was... I'm trying to find a way to describe this, and the only word coming to mind is "crap." Not, like, literal crap, but just a big pile of random stuff. A jacket, some grocery bags filled with who-knows-what, a handful of open vitamin bottles, a couple of bags of candy, some more grocery bags on the seat, some newspapers. It looked like someone had been living out of that booth. I get that it's hard to keep a place clean all the time, but seriously... you can't just shove all that shit in the back before you open? Come on. Then my food arrived... after about twenty minutes. Which seems ridiculous for a place as small and non-crowded as it is. I ordered the same thing I'd always gotten before: tofu pad thai. What arrived at my table looked nothing like what I'd enjoyed so many times a few years ago. It was a big, greasy pile of noodles and some big rectangular chunks of over-fried and oil-soaked tofu. The peanuts in the sauce weren't ground to a pleasing texture. It felt like chewing grit. The sauce itself was oily and bland. I felt like I was just eating noodles soaked in peanut oil with some chilis thrown in to give it a modicum of flavor. In short: it was disgusting. When I got home that night, I sat on the couch for awhile with the dogs, and then it hit me. I needed to get to a bathroom STAT. Everything I'd eaten came right back up. Now, ordinarily I might be willing to blame part of this on being pregnant, but I'm on Zofran. It's the stuff they give to chemo patients to combat their nausea. Since getting that magical, wonderful stuff prescribed, I have had zero problems with morning sickness, so I'm kind of not willing to give Thai Siam the benefit of the doubt on this one. I figure I must have gotten food poisoning, or else all that oil just didn't agree with me. Either way, it tasted just as bad on the way back up as it did on the way down. I really wanted to like this place. I heard great things and I tried it three times. Unfortunately, I don't have many good things to say. The food is okay but is always greasy. I've tried a fried rice, a curry, and a pad Thai. Nothing special really and better options elsewhere in town. The worst part is the service. The food is great. I highly recommend the beef lard nar or the pad sea ewe! What I don't recommend is the wait or the owners. The owners are the rudest people ever, they act like they are doing you a favor by letting you give them money for food. Ohh and did I mention it will be at least a hour wait ever time. Even if you are the only people in the place be prepared to wait at least an hour before they decide they want to be bothered to make your food. Our last trip here was such a terrible experience. It started when I asked if there was curry in the pineapple fried rice. A simple no would have been nice but she told me that pineapple curry and pineapple fried rice were different. So whatever, we decided to order the fried rice, fried tofu and our usual - lad na and pad see eww. When they bring our food, the first two dishes they bring is pad Thai and fried rice. We tell them that we ordered pad see eww and lad na. He yells at us that he told us there's one more dish coming and then the wife says no you order pad thai not lad na. Pretty sure we know what we ordered because we get it every time we come. So we begrudgingly eat what we are served. The pineapple fried rice tastes like ketchup fried rice and the pad thai tastes similar to what I make at home - which is why we rarely order this dish! As we are eating we hear them talking in Thai about the other customers. They probably didn't say anything about us because they knew we understood them! We really could not enjoy our food with all the rudeness from this visit. This time the food didn't make up for it. We will definitely not be going back anytime soon. read more

I decided to dine here for the first time to try something different that people rated decent on Yelp while we were in the Lawrence area. We ordered a medium (hotness) chicken curry panang and a chicken noodle pan thai. Both were decent. I have to admit, I've never liked any Thai restaurants I've been to in the past except this one gets a plus. I didn't fall in love but I would return. The food was decent however wow they used a lot of chopped peanuts and peanut oil in the pan thai. So much it almost got annoying...almost. The service was fine. The young girl working the counter was nice. They are slow on cooking. I think they had just one takeout order before ours and we were basically the only people they were cooking for. They took their time while lacking any "hop in their steps". Not really a bad thing, just I can understand an order would take a long time to fill if they were backed up. I thought it was funny how they had ink jet printer signs up saying things like "no outside food", "restrooms only for customers", "order at the bar", and "return papers to this table" all over the store. She does not make eye contact with customers, barely listens to what was ordered, almost does not talk with diners. Usually, it takes about 25 minutes from the order to the dish on the table. I ordered, kung pao chicken. Prices are on the high side. Food was very good. Thai Siam is a little divey and all the better for it. Uncomfortable chairs, a generally worn interior, and friendly service are what await for you inside (and you probably will be doing a little waiting). But it's a place like this that reminds you that sometimes, it's just about the food. The food here is quite tasty and very reasonably priced considering the quality. They have a very wide selection of meals, covering the basics of Thai food and then some. The flavors are pretty vibrant, which is a nice contrast to some less skillful Thai restaurants who muddle things up a bit. You can get a nice tasting meal for a comparable price to any king-gantic sized meal from a fast food joint. The storefront is a little unassuming, as is everything else about the place, but don't be put off -- this is some excellent Thai food and definitely one of the better independent places around Lawrence. The comments about the interior resembling the old Subway were spot on, it was a very unusual mix. Really delicious food. I love their Noodles Kee Mow with chicken. I like to add tofu. Their tofu rocks. The food is not bland. I do recommend being adventurous and trying something other than the pad thai. The veggies and ingredients are fresh and right in front of you (it is set up like the old Subway it used to be) and you can watch them make each order. The service only sucks if you expect it to be like a Subway, where you get it at the end of counter. It is really a slow restaurant that seems like it should be quick. They make excellent fresh spring rolls and on the weekends have a s00per dank egg drop soup. Wow! Thai Siam, what can I say...I think I'm in love! I absolutely adore Thai Siam. I lived in Lawrence for 4 years and ate there at least once a week. Now I live in Austin, TX and I just can't seem to find any Thai food that is even half as good as Thai Siam. The food is wonderfully flavored with fresh ingredients and is cooked fresh to order...so no food poisoning due to 8 hour old chicken or something... I'm telling you, if you want good Thai food, or Chinese for that matter, Thai Siam is the place. My favorites: Fried Rice (any meat is good), Pad Thai, Lard Nar, Pad See Ewe, Green curry, Pad Kee Mao, Hot and Sour soup, Crab Rangoon, and the egg roll If you want Chinese, I agree with Carol R., don't get the lo mein, but the orange chicken and the other "fried then put in sauce" stuff is also to die for, as the breading underneath the sauce is still really crispy and not soggy like every single other Asian restaurant I've been too.
