Great restaurant. I always get their green curry because it's my favorite so I can't attest to the rest of the menu, but dang they can make some good curry. There are always tons of people picking up take out orders when I go to get mine, so the rest of what they make is probably just as good. It's insane how many people frequent this place knowing the general populous is afraid to try new foods. Their service is great. I've been going during Covid so their building itself was closed, but they're such sweet people. They do a free meal for the community once a year. People line up to get their meals. This is my favorite restaurant in Richmond, KY; I have been eating here since 2013 and have enjoyed every bite of food. It is a traditional Thai restaurant with many of the typical dishes found in Thai restaurants. What sets this shop apart from others like it is its over-the-top quality of service, the laid-back ambiance native to Richmond, and the delicious appetizers and soups they offer. My favorite aspect of this hidden gem of a restaurant, however, is the spice. While the menu states spice levels in stars (1 being mild, 5 being the hottest), they are always willing to give you as much heat as you like. I personally eat my favorite dish, Chicken Pad Thai, with 35 stars and love every bite. Chicken Fried Rice is another fan favorite. Overall, this is an exceptional restaurant and worth a shot. Literally best Thai I've ever had! The staff is beyond friendly and I would say I probably eat here at least once a week. It's so good!!

Don't judge a book by it's cover. Sure it's hidden away in a tired little strip mall. And yes, the hours are a lil funky. 11 am - 2pm for lunch. Dinner starts at 430 pm till 830 pm. I have to say that being served in take away containers threw me at first. I find that its really quite a brillant move. You finish your meal and and ask for a sack to take the rest with you. The containers are recyclable plus you can reuse at home. I'm all for eliminating the middle man. I had the Pad Kee Mow(spicy noodle). I chose medium heat as spice level always varies with Thai food. Very tasty but I think I could have easily moved up to the hot tier for spice. If you like a kick, medium is not going to do it. They have chili paste on the side tables. Bummed to see so few curries which suprised me. No peanut curry either. No matter but I would like to see a potato curry (Masaman) on the menu. I would say one of my faves. I digress, Get to this place and try it out!! Small tip if I may. The bypass (876) is a busy road and the signage for the restaurant is very small and hard to spot. I can only give this place 2 stars and only that due to the fact the service was great, and most ratings are high. My order was to go and was started with Tom Kha Gai soup then recommended was Bangkok Combo heat level 4. The soup was cold, oily, and all I could taste was ginger and not the chewy chicken. The main meal was not spicy at all, only 2 shrimp, chicken and beef were chewy and over cooked. I am disappointed but since every one else has given it high ratings I will stop back and try again when my disappointment wares off and I can give it a honest try. read more

I just ate here, and the glow of delicious pad woon sen still warms my belly. Thai Smile is number 5 of 5 in my tour of Thai cuisine in the regions including and surrounding Lexington and it is, hands down, the best. It pains me, therefore, that it is also the farthest away from where I reside. It doesn't look like much on the outside, but the interior is reasonably warm and homey, and this family-owned business is run like a well-oiled machine. We were seated quickly, our orders were taken after a polite 3-minute interlude, and our food was brought out to us, "Holy-crap-is-this-McThai?!" quick. I assure you, speed didn't negate quality. We went with our usuals (how else to compare one joint to another?), pad kee mow and pad woon sen. Her pad woon sen looked, smelled, and tasted fantastic. My pad kee mow looked great, but smelled and tasted vaguely of fish. Which is odd, because this has never been the case before, and our server assured us there was no fish sauce in it. Despite her assurance, she was happy to take it back and bring me pad woon sen when I asked, and did so with a smile. Perhaps somebody had ordered a seafood dish right before mine was prepared, allowing for cross-contamination. Hard to say. I hate complaining about my food or sending it back, but she made it painless. The food was fantastic, the service is lightning fast and friendly, and the prices are reasonable. Why only 4-stars? Atmosphere is lacking just a touch, and I've had slightly better in a few places in my days on the left coast, but this is by far the best I've had anywhere in a south/east direction (including Atlanta). Love love love this place! I come here very often for lunch or dinner. Food is delicious and staff are always friendly. Good asian restaurants can be hard to find around KY, but this is one of them! I usually spend about $15-20 there (but other items are cheaper), but the portions are more than enough for me. I usually have enough to take home as leftovers. I used to really like this business, but honestly the quality has gone way down hill over the last few years. For one, they no longer serve their food sit-down style (with real plates and silverware). They give you your food in styrofoam take-out boxes only, which really takes away from the experience of a sit down dinner. Another thing I disliked about this place was that they did not play any music. It was eerily silent in the restaurant, which freaked me out. If you are looking for a nice place to have dinner, this is NOT it. If you want simple take-out, then Thai Smile will work for you. The food itself is decent, and they give you a ton of it. Tasty, friendly, excellent service: My coworker and I strolled in the door 10 minutes before Thai Smile was supposed to close until reopening later in the day for their dinner shift. Having worked in the food service industry, I know how frustrating it can be to have customers walk in right before the store closes. I was expecting to have hurried service and cold food. Instead, the manager, Suta, greeted us warmly and seated us promptly, even giving each of us a cup of the soup of the day which was delicious, flavorful, and a great way to begin my first experience here. For my meal, I ordered their crab rangoons along with pad see ew (chicken with noodles, broccoli, and ground peanuts). The rangoons were cooked to perfection and presented with a modest elegance. The pad see ew was absolutely delicious. I ordered mine as a 3-star (middle of the road spiciness level), which provided the perfect level of spice. I noticed that in the middle of our dining experience, Suta had to leave, and was replaced by one of the cooks, who was also an excellent waiter. I am a regular customer at the Frankfort location. This was my first visit to the Richmond location. My lovely companion and I were in Richmond for a concert at the Center for The Arts, so we decided to stop in before the show for a quick bite. Unlike the Frankfort location, this place is mainly for carry out, but there is limited seating. The staff was fantastic, very friendly. The place was very clean, despite the outside appearance. It really is a hidden gem. One of our party got the ubiquitous Pad Thai, with mild heat. The portion size was huge. The noodles were perfect. A very good take on a Thai classic. My lovely companion ordered the Bangkok Special, a kitchen sink of fresh ingredients in a light garlic sauce. Spicy, and delicious. The rest of us all ordered the Lab Kai, a shredded chicken over fresh lettuce dish. Best when ordered spicy, it was really good. There was no doubt it was made fresh, the lettuce was still crispy. All dishes, other than Pad Thai, were served with rice on the side. This was a nice touch. I would definitely recommend this little gem. read more

My boyfriend and I stopped by here when the time was almost 14:00. I thought they would refuse to let us in, but they didn't. I must say I didn't want to walk in at first, because I know the feeling when the close time is coming, customers just keep coming in the store, like there is no end of the work time. If you are in Richmond, KY try not to miss out on this gem! It's a tiny, family run restaurant with some of the best Pad-Thai I have ever tasted. The staff is so friendly and they seem to recognize you if you go in more than twice and are always very warm. Occasionally the restraunt will post a "temporarily closed" sign for some family reason, but it's always worth the trip back when the doors open again. Often at lunch they will offer a free appetizer with your meal. I am a big fam of the steamed dumpling! They will deliver within the city of Richmond for a small fee. read more

Holy moly is this GREAT. I am writing it still sitting at the table. We arrived here based on proximity to the expressway on a road trip from Chicago to Gatlinburg. With us are five vegetarians and a person fatally allergic to fish. All of us eat Thai food all the time in Chicago, and this place can compete with ANY place we've eaten back home. They had no issue substituting tofu for chicken in any dish, keeping fish out of the sauce, and suggesting appetizers. The service was friendly, the food was absolutely DELICIOUS, and most importantly, everything was totally fresh. What a great meal!!!! read more

I find it hard to give 5 star reviews to little restaurants that are snugly nestled in strip malls, but I found it harder NOT to give Thai Smile 5 stars, so there you go. When you walk in you realize you can sprint to the back of the store in 10 seconds, the small eatery provides you with excellent service, because max capacity is around 50 people. I have never had a bad server here, they're always helpful and friendly, and VERY prompt. I try something new every time I go, but my girlfriend always has the Pad Thai, and I usually end up eating her left overs too. The spicy is SPICY, so don't order too hot, or they'll have to take it back and re make it (which they have only had to do once for me, and didn't charge) The fried rice is OK, i've had better, but I don't go for the fried rice. Overall, if you're in Richmond and like Thai Food and HAVEN'T eaten here, go NOW! And college kids beware, don't drink after eating the 5 star food, it's not a good combo the morning after.. I chose this restaurant while passing through due to its incredible reviews received on Yelp. I must say that I was a bit disappointed. The food, especially for being Thai, was pretty expensive, certainly more than I had been expecting. Almost every entree is ten dollars or more. Due to this, along with the positive reviews, I was anticipating being blown away by my dish. It was a bit of a let down. I've definitely had better (it was the Thai classic, Pad Thai) and for much cheaper. Absolute best Thai food you can find! I have always been a huge fan of Asian style food, and Thai Smile has blown everywhere else out of the water. My husband who had never had any kind of Asian food before has also become obsessed, and, so is our 2 year old daughter (whom we've been taking since she was 8 months) The service is amazing, the people are SO nice and they know us and always make conversation when we come in, and comment on how big our daughter has gotten. We love this place and I actually only eat here for Asian style food now. Definitely give it a shot, you won't regret it! My favorite is their chicken fried rice, 3 star and a side of crab Rangoons. We ate here for the first time, on a Wed. night for early dinner before a show at EKU. Our niece had recommended it; she is an EKU grad. We had no trouble finding it since someone had said to look for Little Caesars. However, I think that looking for Subway would have made it even easier to find. We were lucky to arrive just before the mad dinner rush - I think a lot of people attending the show were there, I know at least a few were. While we ate the line of people waiting kept growing - I think 12 were waiting when we left. The man who showed us to our table was probably the owner, and was very nice. The waitress was probably his family member, and did a good job & was nice. I LOVE that they leave a water pitcher on the table for us to refill. I understand why they use the styrofoam containers (Yes it is cheap, but I HATE styrofaom - it is so bad for the environment) for appetizers, and nicer plastic microwave containers for the entrees. It does make it easier for the college student crowd & take home, no dish washing either. I was glad that the hot entree was NOT in styrofoam because that would release toxic chemicals into the food. Our 4 different appetizers were all good - all typical fried food (which I don't usually eat). We both got an entree that was a version of fried rice, mine #60 with pineapple & cashews, his was a #58 combination rice. Both were tasty & a huge portion, but kind of colorless & mostly rice. Thai Smile is the definition of a hidden gem--tucked away in a strip mall beside Little Caesar's, it isn't exactly the picture of an ideal location. With that being said, however, it's absolutely outstanding. This place has the best Thai food I have ever had ANYWHERE. Service is outstanding and crazy fast--we are always greeted warmly and seated immediately. The servers are more than happy to help or give suggestions and they never come across as being anything but friendly. As I said above, the food itself is amazing, and you can order it however you like (spicy/not spicy, no meat, etc.) The pineapple tangerine chicken in particular is unique and delicious, never found anything like it elsewhere--not that you could go wrong with anything off the menu. I always like to order something different every time I go. No matter what, we always start with the curry puffs, and I recommend that you try them as well; they are delectably crispy pastries that strike a wonderful balance between sugar and spice.
