Not just bad, horrendously bad. Went to lunch there today. Waited 20 min to give our order. I ordered the Chicken w Lemongrass. My friend ordered the Tilapia. What I really got was canned veggies and sliced chicken swimming in a sauce made of sugar, food coloring, and gum Arabic, and NO lemongrass. I ate only the top part of the dish that wasn't too badly soggy with the disgusting sauce. My friend had diarrhea within 30 minutes of eating his dish. I will tell you that I have been going to Thai Soon since it opened on lower Greenville in the late 80's, close to 30 years ago. I will never-NEVER- go back. read more

Every time I went to this restaurant, I had to wait about 15-20 mins to be seated because it was so popular. Today I went and we are the only table. I was very surprised. I keep worrying that the owner changed or the food got bad. I was please to find out that still same delicious food as always. I know a lot of people like Thai soon. After years of working in the food service industry, I have not seen a dirtier restaurant. I hardly ever leave reviews, but this is my second try with them. I would think a Thai dish requested with tofu would have some tofu it, it was mushy and bland. We stopped by Thai Soon last night to finally see what all the fuss was about. After reading reviews by my fellow Yelpers, I was worried about the smells coming in from the nail salon. Luckily all I smelled was stuff I wanted to eat. We seated ourselves and the waiter was quick to take our drink order. I noticed there were only two people working the front, but I don't know if this is typical. I imagine it might be because the room's awfully cramped to try and fit a bunch of servers running around filling drinks and taking orders. If they rush the odds of a table ending up overturned are incredibly strong. . .which would definitely encourage me to come back. I was surprised to see the place fairly empty, but my spirits were brightened by the steady stream of take out business they had. Feeling comfortable and not selling nail polish remover, it was time to order. We started off with the fried calamari. It was good, but some pieces were very rubbery and overcooked. Of course, we finished the app no problem, but I was a little upset they'd run out of dumplings for the day. Does that mean they make a set amount or they're using storebought and had hit the budgeted number? Worries for another time, my friends. I ordered the Panang Curry Salmon and the girlfriend got the seafood combo. After about 15 minutes our food was out and I immediately wished I'd skipped the appetizer. There's dinner sized portions and there's "death row, end of the line, the last you'll ever eat" portions. This was no dinner portion. A mound of bell peppers, mini corncobs, carrots, snow peas, broccoli and cabbage sat on top of a thick slap of quick fried salmon and the whole thing sat in a pool of spicy, creamy curry sauce. Spicy, sweet, nutty and incredibly rich I told myself to only eat half so I could enjoy it for lunch the next day. That did not happen. By the time I came up for a breath, I realized I was past the halfway point and there was not turning back. The salmon was cooked great with a nice light crunch to it and the veggies were all fresh and delicious. Once I cleaned off most of the plate I heaped on the steamed rice to soak up the rest of the sauce. Feeling satisfied with my conquest, it was time to be a nice boyfriend and snake bites off the other entree on the table. The seafood combo was just as great as the salmon. It had more of a nutty flavor than mine, but was still really good. Her plate was heaped with vegetables mixed with squid, scallops, shrimp and some of the biggest damn mussels I've ever seen! I'm not sure if these were grown on a diet of steroids or just harvested in waters near a nuclear power plant, but they were easily double the size of normal mussels. They had a great sweet flavor and had more of a lobster taste than mussels I've had before. We ordered takeout chicken pad thai for my roommate and I'm assuming he had no complaints. . .except for he wished he'd saved half for lunch today too. Hedonists tend to flock together, what can I say. The service wasn't nearly as bad as I expected. We managed to get in and out in under an hour and managed to keep the bill (2 seafood entrees, pad thai, calamari, iced tea) under $50. . .not a bad dinner at all. I'm intrigued about some other things on the menu and will definitely be headed back for round two sometime in the immediate future. Seriously? I haven't reviewed Thai Soon yet? Thank you Joseph for making me realize this error in my ways. I was on a curry kick for a good two weeks in March. One night on my way home, I stopped and ordered Panang Pineapple Chicken Curry with an extra side of rice to go. My car smelled so good and I was starving by the time I got that styofoam container from Richardson to Allen. Oh how I love Pineapple Chicken Curry. It is even better for leftovers. One day two weeks ago Jen C and I went for lunch. I had never actually eaten at Thai Soon, only picked up food to go. This was the first time I had ever noticed the "fumes" that other people have mentioned in their reviews. The smell quickly dissapated and it didn't bother me. I ordered my staple and was excited to see the Yellow Curry Soup and the Veggie Egg Roll that came with my meal. I loved the soup and as Joseph said, the dipping sauce for the egg roll was perfectly sweet & spicy. Jen C graciously met me for lunch that day even though she is not a fan of Thai food. She liked the soup and the Veggie Egg Roll. She ordered spring rolls that were not fried, which surprised her... but the Peanut Sauce was AWESOME. I was more than happy to take home not only my own leftovers, but Jen's too. After making some Indian food at home and using leftover rice from my Pineapple Curry... I think I had some sort of curry every day for over a week. I ordered a Thai Tea to go instead of stopping for a Bubble Tea on my way back to work. It was delicious and sweet. From looking at the other reviews I was surprised that I didn't see anything beyond 4 stars. Well here's 4 for you Thai Soon! I came in for lunch and I was a bit iffy about this place after my last encounter with Thai food from another restaurant, but this place has got me like'n Thai again. I had a lunch special today which first consisted of the Yellow Curry Soup and the Veggie Egg Roll. The soup came out piping hot and all the veggies in the soup were really mushy, which I really didn't mind at all since the soup was so hearty and had a bit of a sweetness to it. It was delicious! The Veggie Egg Roll was crispy and the dipping sauce was sweet and had a slight spiciness. The dipping sauce was just icing on the cake! The main dish I ordered was the Mango Chicken. This dish says spicy written all over it, but I failed to trust the menu. I was sweating bullets within the first few minutes of eating. Sure, it's spicy and I'm sweating like the sides of a glass full of iced tea on a hot Texas summer day, but it don't scare me none from continuing to eat this spicy goodness. The dish was spiced up from a variation of curry seasonings, bell peppers, and a mysteriously sweet(mangoes) and spicy sauce, it was awesome! I came in for lunch and this place was packed. My roommate and I lucked out and took the last table available. Most of the tables were placed really close to each other, I thought we were kind of packed into a can of sardines. We were so close to other tables that we overheard people next to us thinking about getting a new stove for their home and then shouting across the room to say hello to another friend that just walked into the place, or maybe she was just a loud ass woman? Anyways, the decor of this place was really colorful and was decorated with pictures of their king and and they had a wall just plastered with awards from various organizations applauding their Thai food goodness. We stopped eating in the restaurant years ago even though we love the food because they are located right next to a nail salon (which I go to as well and love) and don't like the smell of nail lacquer when we're eating. But their food is incredible and well worth getting takeout or eating outside. Lots of fresh crisp vegetables and great flavors in all their dishes. After having a bad day at work, I decided I wanted nothing more than a mess of pad thai and sweat pants on the couch watching tv. Thai Soon is a short drive from my place and I'd been meaning to give it another go after seeing some more recent yelp reviews pop up on it. I didn't notice the nail polish smell, but maybe I'm just not sensitive. I placed an order for some pad thai, asked for it to be medium spicy, which the lady said was a 2, and some calamari from their appetizer section. I didn't wait long, but long enough to notice all the random placement of the items they have hanging on the wall. They have quite a line of awards or some sort of documents, but they aren't lined up and are very crooked. It was a little irritating to the eye, not going to lie. They tried to help the calamari out by cutting a vent hole out of the container. Alas, the breading was still soggy. The dipping sauce it came in, I wish it were a bit thicker so it would stick to the calamari pieces, but I don't think any sauce would save it. These were pretty rubbery and tasteless. Just like chewing on rubberbands. (Which oddly enough has happened to me) Pad thai was ok, but didn't have a lot of flavor. If medium was 2 then I sure could have used more heat! It wasn't spicy at all, which I know pad thai isn't typically, but I always ask for a bit of a kick. The small pieces of chicken were fine, but the large slices were bland and boring. (Kinda like that date you had on Friday night, I know, we've all met her) I can recall the first time I tried take out for lunch here and I remembered it to be better. When i hear the word Thai, i think of Sagat from street fighter and Muay Thai. I never really associated food with Thailand because i always thought it consisted of bugs and crickets. The catch was that we had to spend atleast 35 dollars, but who can complain? a 35 dollar meal for 15 bucks? my jewness is ok with that. We ordered 2 appetizers and the tom yum soup, which is like a hot and sour soup with vegetables. The appetizers were fried calamari and fried tofu. Both had generous portions and were good. For the main course, we ordered the Pad Thai and Pad See Ew. Oh my lord, they do not skimp with the portions at all. Each dish was a good 1-2 pounds of pasta. The flavors merried so well. Thai Soon has consistently delivered high quality food and good service over the many years I've been going there. I have never noticed the smell of the nail salon as some others have mentioned. I have had the most frequent good experiences at this place as opposed to other Thai places in Dallas. Their noodle dishes really stand out, and the yellow curry noodles in particular are excellent. I've never had a bad experience there. The staff have always come through with everything I've needed and I've always felt well taken care of. I feel the portion to price ratio is quite comparable with other Thai restaurants in Dallas. I frequently have leftovers from my entree, which is fantastic for a brown bagger like me. read more

I've eaten here several times and I keep coming to the same conclusion; great food for a great price! If you're a vegetarian, you will be in heaven at Thai Soon. The restaurant itself is pretty typical and there's nothing really special about the building. I think it's pretty easy to find from the street and that's always good. The service is always really nice and they are always very careful and patient with my special request instructions. My favorites: Spicy Thai Basil, Royal Thai Curry, Spinach Noodle, and the Classic Thai Plate. I usually order the Spinach Noodle spicy, big surprise :) Almost every dish can be ordered vegetarian and the tofu is done very well; nice and firm. The dumplings are also really good, along with the egg rolls and spring rolls. I never had vegetarian Tom Yum soup before Thai Soon and I haven't found any place that does it quite the same way. Moved into the Richardson area last year and have been trying new Thai places since then. We usually stick with Bangkok at Beltline and Noodle Wave because of yelps reviews. Well... I just found Thai Soon! Would have gone sooner but It didn't get amazing ratings on here, Reviews are decent on Yelp but for once I think their 3.5 stars are not reflective of how good this place really is! We are moving again...Dang it! I think this one might be my favorite and I found it too late! When I lived in NYC I frequented a Thai place called Spice. They had the most authentic Pad Thai and they spoiled me so much that when I tried a few in Texas they were subpar at best...so I switched my go-to dish to green curry. Not sure what made me get the Pad Thai at this place but I'm sure glad I did! Tasted just like my NYC favorite! Get the pad Thai!!!! An added bonus was that they have curry puffs (potato and pea filled fritters). Not many Thai places in Texas have curry puffs! They get 5 stars just for that! The calamari was great too as was the hubby's fried rice! Looks like I'm gonna have to travel for my Thai once I move. It's worth it! Don't let a few bad reviews keep you away from this great place! Maybe it was just too soon, Thai Soon. It's possible I'm just in that awkward break-up phase having left my favorite Thai place behind in Seattle a few short months ago. The connection with you just wasn't there for me. You may be the afternoon delight for other girls in the heat; you may be just what some other girl's mamma dreams of her daughter coming home with. That special 'something' just didn't happen between us. I'll try to be gentle. You bring some positives to our potential relationship. The fresh spring rolls are good. The dipping sauce is good. The pineapple friend rice even makes me laugh in a bashful kind-of-way. And then there's what makes my eye's wander to other places. Cabbage in a curry dish is just not my style. The panang was good - not special - but good, but I have to ask....cabbage? And those scary little corn? It just seemed like filler talk to me. That conversation piece that you use with everyone because you don't have more interesting things to say. The cashew chicken was, I'm sorry if this hurts, slimy. I just didn't expect you to smell like you raced from the gym without showering. And, again with the cabbage but without an interesting sauce. We've been regular customers here for about 8 years now. We always start with vegetarian spring rolls - they are always fresh, and really great with the peanut sauce. The reason we prefer this over other Thai restaurants is because the dishes come with more vegetables than most Thai restaurants. We sometimes ask for "extra veggies" instead of tofu or meat for a really delicious soy-free vegetarian meal. The dining room is not fancy, and the prices reflect that. read more

I gave this place two chances and really wanted to love it as it's close to my house. But no. The first time I was here I had something with squid, which I usually love. Not here. Avoid. Rubbery and stinky. Second visit: I had the medium tom yum soup with shrimp. Very watered down. Three shrimp in entire big watery bowl. Then I had the black mushroom rice with tofu. I would have preferred beef or pork, but they don't have any on the menu at all. (I saw their store sign after I left and it does say seafood and vegetarian, so that explains it). There were four black mushroom halves in the entire dish, which was very bland. Most of the dish was comprised of cabbage, which would have been okay in a smaller quantity. They should have called the dish Cabbage Rice. In my experience, jasmine rice usually accompanies Thai food. Not here. It costs extra. Really? Overall, the food here seems more American Chinese than Thai. If you are used to awesome Thai food, do not expect to get it here. read more

I saw all the yelp reviews and I thought this would be a great place to try Thai but it was not as great as the reviews said. We tried the corn patties and bleh...I have no idea why people like them. I like corns but just not these fritters, they had no flavors to them unless you dip them into the sauce. I went with my two sisters, I ordered pad see eww, my one sister ordered red curry, the other sister ordered pad thai. My sister's pad thai was the best dish of the three. I eat beef with my pad see eww but this place DID NOT EVEN HAVE BEEF, I understand if they didn't want to serve pork but BEEF??? I had only four choices chicken, tofu, veggies or shrimp (I believe). So I decided to pick tofu and the waitress said "Do you know what tofu is?" I was definitely offended by this question because her tone made it sound like I've never had tofu in my life before (I'm Asian, who's Asian and has not tried tofu? Come on now!) Without my beef in my pad see eww, I was left disappointed with even just the tofu (don't get me wrong, I love tofu but just not as much as beef). The red curry dish was so bad that my sister did not even finish her dish. (She usually finishes her dishes and she LOVES anything curry.) They had too much curry and not enough coconut milk; definitely not a recommendation to anyone. The pad thai was the best of the three but not the best pad thai I've had and I LOVE thai food. I absolutely love this place! It's become a regular in my lunch rotation. Great lunch special prices and a wide selection. They don't edit down their lunch menu, which I greatly appreciate. I love the flat noodles, especially number 24 and number 25, the Spinach Noodle. Everything can be made with tofu, chicken, shrimp or crab - which provides great vegetarian options and options for us omnivores. Grab the corn patties to start, but skip the calamari. It's been over a year since I first reviewed and my opinion still stands the same. I absolutely love this place! I order takeout at least once a month and sometimes more. I always order anything with red curry. Lately I love the Steamed vegetables coconut red curry with tofu and big noodles instead of rice. My boyfriend orders the Pineapple panang curry with chicken- extra spicy. ALWAYS consistently good. The portions are huge! And the lunch special is the best bang for your buck. A huge portion of food also with soup and either an egg roll or corn patties. The corn patties have the best dipping sauce. This sweet cucumber sauce. So, you know that feeling of having nothing at home to cook for dinner? That was me on a random Tuesday when I found this gem on Yelp (thanks guys!) and decided to stop in on my way home from work. Ambiance: Very small restaurant packed with cozy tables and chairs. I took my food to go, but sat at a table and ordered a Thai Tea while I waited (which...yes, would definitely order again). Service: VERY friendly and nice...a lot more helpful than some other Thai places I frequent. Thank you for the kindness! Food: OMG! I rarely crave Pad Thai as I feel most places can't get it just right (IMHO). Not so much with this joint...wow, super yummy and I was able to customize my spiciness level (which I usually find lacking in other Pad Thai) and did a medium spiciness with chicken. Super yum and would definitely get it again. Decided to split this dish with my husband, D, but not gonna lie...he probably got a little less than the half he deserved, I couldn't stop eating it! I also had a craving for the Fresh Shrimp Spring Rolls with Peanut Sauce. They were huge and perfectly yummy and um, can we talk about this peanut sauce?! Holy get in my mouth right now, it was perfectly thick, creamy, and had peanuts on top as well (I know there is a "that's what she said" joke in there somewhere). I will come back just for these...I probably should have ate them as my dinner and shared more of the Pad Thai with D. Also had the Crispy Baby Vegetarian Egg Rolls which came in the amount of 6 and the cucumber sauce they had on the side was pretty freaking spectacular...it changed the flavor of the egg rolls in an awesome way (and I am not a huge fan of cucumbers). Dessert: Mango Sticky Rice (duh!) I will come back JUST for this...finally!!! They didn't feel the need to dye their freaking rice Christmas green (GROSS and yes I have ordered from a place that did that) and it was a nice portion with 2 scoops of rice lavishly coated with yummy coconut milk, topped with sesame seeds, with a side of perfectly ripe mango. Man, have I had crap Mango Sticky Rice before, but this....this has given me back my faith that Mango Sticky Rice can be perfected in Texas and not just something to have as a special treat from take away joints in New York City. All in all, I will definitely grab some dinner on my way home from work the next time my cupboard is bare. read more

Thai Soon, the once revered Thai restaurant on Lower Greenville has lost its grace since moving to its location in Richardson. It once had a beautiful patio to add to it's veritable Thai cuisine, now it is lacking in ambiance. The food is still as good as ever, but when you walk in and smell the chemicals from the neighboring nail salon it can ruin any mood. The prices are not bad at lunch, however plan on tacking on an extra 2 bucks for dinner items. I recommend trying the Thai tea, pineapple panang curry, and chicken sate, or corn patties........DELICIOUS! read more

Not a good place to go for Thai, won't be back for sure. Just wanted to grab some Pad Thai but not at my usual places. I read good reviews about this place but I on the other hand did not have a good experience. The restaurant is pretty small and has old furniture, no offense I understand it's been opened for a long time but it would help if the place looked modern. When I walked in to pick up my food I felt like I was walking through a maze. very compacted The most important part is the food, how good was it? Well let's just say the rank I gave this place pretty much describes how good it was. I got the Pad Thai with chicken, pretty cheap for the size. The sauce really killed it... I'm guessing there was too much tomatoes cause it was darn close to ketchup! For pete's sake I had to take out my stash of kimchee cause it was bad enough and unbearable. If you are looking for a great Thai lunch spot, look no further than Thai Soon! Pick one of their great lunch specials and you can eat for less than 10 bucks! Thai Soon is nestled unassumingly in a island of a strip center, but don't let that drive you away, because this place is legit. If you dine in for lunch you receive a small egg roll, salad or soup, and your lunch special for a steal around 8 or 9 dollars! Their chicken pad thai is very good and I usually rotate between it, spicy thai basil (rice), and my favorite, their orange chicken with rice. They serve you a heaping mound of chicken and be sure to choose your spice level! I always go for a level 4 out of 5 and I can still enjoy my meal without sweating TOO much. My friends live and die by their pad thai as well as their yellow curry! I myself have not tried their curry yet, but it always smells and looks delicious. The service leaves something to the imagination, but whenever I go at lunch it is ALWAYS packed, so I cut them some slack since they stay busy. If you get there with a party larger than 4 after 12:15, you may be in for a bit of a wait. This hidden gem is becoming more and more popular I feel, and I have had to wait for a table several times recently. Usually it isn't too long, but even if it was, it would be worth the wait! This former lower-Greenville icon has been doing brisk business in Richardson for several years. They still serve those delectable fried corn patties with dipping sauce (a rare fried delight). So, if like me, you just gotta have pad key mow when nothing else will do - here's your neighborhood fix. The reality of strip center shops leaves something to be desired. The faade lends no character to the culture or cuisine of Thailand. They could dress it up a bit more. Also, I think they're a bit on the high side with dinner menu pricing: $6 lunch items are the same size at dinner but $10. The wait staff is always quick to take your order and food arrives in 5 minutes. We also get carry-out here which takes 5 mins from time of order (even though they always say 15). read more

Been threatening to try this place for years, and finally did. Ambience: Very small place inside a strip mall. Maybe 8 tables, and very close together. Reminds me of a European joint where space is at a premium. Much veneration of the Thai president, and interesting illustrations of Buddhist philosophy. Clientele: The most diverse and cosmopolitain restaurant crowd I've seen in a long time. Two ladies speaking French, one lady speaking with a German accent to her born-in-the-USA daughter, several Asian folks of various derivations, an African-American, one Anglo librarian type, two rough-looking slacker types that were that were in fact pleasant and friendly, and one annoying cellphone yakking wandering bumping people in the head soccer mom. The room is too small for soccer moms to wander around dragging their progeny. Food: No lunch specials on weekends, and no prices given for noodle dishes on either the real or to-go menus. I had pad thai w/tofu and it was good. I am not skilled at Thai food criticism, so regard me as a Joe Sixpack in this regard. Drink: I had water, refilled appropriately. Staff: Two young Thai (?) women ran the front of the house; mine had decent English with a strong and pleasant accent. wifi: not tested. Really not enough room for people to drag out laptops, IMO. bathroom: acceptable, but the hallway is so narrow and crowded you may have to turn sideways to get down to the bathrooms. Doesn't bother me, but if you're claustrophobic You Have Been Warned. Value: Decent. I think a weekday lunch special would raise it to Good value. I literally get take out Pad Kee Mow from here once a week because of the giant portions I can separate out into more than just one meal! Their fried tofu is so good and I always order it even though I'm not a vegetarian. Their service is always great! read more

if only I could review JUST the food at Thia Soon, it would be so easy. Thai Soon offers well prepared, great tasting Thai standards, with high quality ingredients. However, if they would only turn off the vent from the nail salon next door that blows acetone fumes into the restaurant, it would make the dining experience so much more pleasant. The service was great, our food came out hot, and the water glasses we never left empty. The Pad Thai was not greasy and used proper noodles, as did the Pad See Ew. I have been going to Thai Soon since they moved up to Richardson. The strip center atheistic really does not bother me (If it did, how could I eat at most places in The Metroplex?), however it seems as if the who place good use a good scrubbing...the tables, chairs, carpets, windows, etc just looked like they hadn't really been washed down since they were new. If you live/work close enough, Thai Soon is a 4 or 5 star take out place. If you decide to eat in, enjoy the excellent food and service, and just ignore the rest of the distractions! read more

I love eating at Thai Soon. Since I discovered it a few months ago I have been back at least 5 times. Every experience has been good and consistent. I usually order the Pad See Ew, but have also sampled the corn cake starter and some of their random daily specials. They are quite vegetarian friendly, but do offer chicken and some seafood (no beef though). The restaurant itself is super small and if you show up at noon on a weekday you will probably have to wait a few minutes, but we try to go early to miss the crowds. The service has always been good and attentive without being overbearing, and the food comes out lightening quick for the most part. I call ahead for takeout and don't have to wait more than 10 minutes to go pick it up. The only gripe I have is they don't make my food spicy enough and don't have Sriracha, but I will survive. This is a small wonderful Thai restaurant. On the outside it may say Vegetarian but don't let that scare you off because chicken and shrimp meals are available. I have eaten there about 15 times in the last year and taken friends to introduce them to the consistently outstanding food. The only thing I would say as a tip is that "Hot and Sour" soup may not be like what you are used to but give it a try and don't forget to save room for dessert. read more
