What I ate: Praram, tom kha, green curry, spicy eggplant, mango sticky rice Visit date: September 1, 2019 First time? Yes. My family and I headed to Carson City for food because Lake Tahoe was crazy busy. Thai Thai is located in a small strip mall alongside a bakery, small shops, and a craft store. We were having a late lunch / early dinner, so we were the only ones in the restaurant. We ordered praram with tofu, tom kha with chicken, green curry with tofu, and spicy eggplant with mixed vegetables. The praram was not what I expected. It's supposed to be steamed spinach covered with peanut sauce (their description even says so); Thai Thai used a spring mixed (so it was cold) instead. Usually the veggies are the main ingredient, but at Thai Thai the tofu was the main ingredient. Also, the peanut sauce was red - we think they added curry paste to the sauce. Oh, and they spelled it 'param' - I should have been more suspicious. Whatever it was we ate, it still tasted fine. If tom kha is on the menu, my Hubby and I order it! It's one of our faves. The tom kha at Thai Thai was on the bland side and the coconut milk didn't incorporate well into the broth (not 'creamy' looking), but it was filled with lots of mushrooms which I liked. The green curry was yellow and heavy on the bamboo shoots. I like bamboo shoots, but they didn't take on the curry flavor (you can taste the can). I wish they included more of the other veggies in this dish, too - there was maybe one piece of red and one piece of yellow bell pepper. The spicy eggplant was my favorite of the four dishes. The eggplant had a nice char flavor, and the sauce was rich. Again though, even though 'eggplant' was in the name, this dish was mostly other vegetables. My Dad ordered the mango sticky rice. It did not come out like the mango sticky rice in their photo. Womp womp. But it tasted really good! They serve the mango with a regular sticky rice and a blue sticky rice (my guess is that it's made with butterfly pea flowers). The food was good (though sometimes not what we expected), but service was a bit lack luster - no warm welcome, or check to see how we were doing or if we needed anything else, and no instructions on if we pay at the table or at the cashier. read more

I wish we had this restaurant in our area! We came during our Tahoe trip, and the food was amazing! The owner chatted with us a lot. After hearing we came from LA, he joked about not wanting to serve us because there are too many food varieties in LA and people are just more picky. However, we tried the food and they were actually better than most Thai restaurants I've been in LA or the Bay Area! The noodles for pad Thai and Pad See Ew were very fresh and had a great texture. The owner was also very friendly and accommodating for vegetarians/vegans. He even offered to use a new pot of oil to deep fry our tofu so it wouldn't be mixed with other meats. (It was $4 extra but we still appreciated it) They fry their tofu and crispy wontons fresh upon every order, and you can really taste the difference. Food was flavorful and delicious. Super cute DELICIOUS little Thai place! If you're looking for good Thai food, this is the place! My husband and I stopped here on a whim while heading to another shop in the area, and I'm so glad we did! The food was so good, probably the best Thai food we've had in the area. The restaurant itself is small, with some seating located out in the front of the restaurant which is located inside a strip mall so it was still inside the building, but outside the restaurant which was kind of nice because the rest of the strip mall was closed so it was quiet. We were there during a slow time, and who I believe to be the owner, was very attentive! He filled our waters and made sure we had everything we needed He also told us about his restaurant experience and all the different styles of food he knew how to make, and other restaurants that he had in the past, he was overall pleasant company, a very nice man. We ordered some appetizers (the spring rolls are super delicious!!) and we shared an entree (Pad Thai with shrimp and chicken and a generous amount of each protein!) and two Thai teas. Tried this place for the first time yesterday and loved the food. The gentleman that worked there was friendly and welcoming. He was clearly working hard and ensuring everyone got their food quickly, drinks were always full, and the guests were happy. He was always smiling, but a genuine one. The food was fresh, awesome rice. I ordered spicy level 5 basil tofu. It had a really good burn and great flavor. Many times with food, the hotter you go, the less you can taste, but the flavor stood strong. As I was waiting for my food, the server brought out soup for everyone. When he returned with my main dish, I asked him what the broth was and he said chicken. I politely declined and let him know I'm a vegetarian. Right then, he alerted me that my dish was made with duck sauce and not to eat it. He immediately brought it back to the kitchen and freshly made it with soy sauce (which was awesome). Told me that next thing l time I'm there, he can make any dish vegetarian or vegan, just ask . I know it doesn't seem like a big deal, but it was to me. I stopped by to pick up some Pad Thai to-go. Everyone working here was not Thai (I think they were all Mexican). The Pad Thai had no taste. There were 0 customers here around 3PM on a Sunday. Based on this quick experience and the substandard Pad Thai, I can't give this spot more than 2 stars. I mean, what do you expect from Carson City though? I get it, I just had take out and I'm judging this place with 2 stars. Well, now that you've read this far into my review, if you ever find yourself in a similar situation as me, you'll probably think the same. A dining-in experience may well be different (or will it?). Went in first time during COVID, they offered take out and we were starving. Same person cooking was also handling money, no mask, no gloves, no profession style uniform. Took 40 mins to get food and when we did, we couldn't eat it. Even if we hadn't witnessed poor hygiene (during a pandemic) the food itself was awful looking. Spring rolls were plain soggy greens, a few pre shredded carrots, sliver of tofu and a pinch of dry rice noodles. We didn't bother trying it and threw the food in the trash along with $40 bucks. I NEVER write poor or negative reviews, if I have a bad experience some where I just assume it was an *off* day and will usually give a second chance regardless. But to be practicing dangerous food handling DURING A PANDEMIC is wholly unacceptable. read more

We found this pleasant restaurant by googling Thai food in the area and were so impressed with quality of food and level of service. The owner, Mr. Kong, takes really good care of his customers, very friendly and helpful. We definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting or living in Carson City, our favorites were the garlic pepper with beef, pad Thai, and the seafood soup, the mango boba was delicious as well. This place has absolutely great food and considering there's only one person working the service is fast to. The decoration is nice, the plates and utensils are spotless and While simple go with the over all ambiance of this business. The portion size was perfect I got the red curry and let me tell you I've never been to a tai place outside of Thailand where the rice to curry was perfect before. The tai tea was amazing. Just a tiny place in a strip mall, but I was craving Thai and it was near my hotel, so I tried it, and was not dissapointed! I had the pumpkin curry and living in the SF bay area, there is no shortage of great Thai restaurants so I was a bit worried, but it was the best pumpkin curry I've tasted! The trick is to ensure the pumpkin is thoroughly cooked and has absorbed the wonderful flavors of the "stew" and this really fantastic. I got mine with tofu which was also just how I like it. Crispy on the outside and moist and soft on the inside. The prioprietor, Kong, was such a nice man and we enjoyed a lovely conversation. I'd been in a bad mood because of a car accident which stranded me in the area, and his kindness put me in a good mood again. Thanks to Kong and his wife for a lovely meal. read more

The food is okay but not worth the wait. I have tried this place twice, both times as take out. They don't seem to start your order until you actually get there. This last time I called in the order and they said 20 minutes. I showed up about 30 minutes after calling and nothing was ready. The cashier didn't say anything until after I paid then they asked me to take a seat (in a full dining room) and she would bring the order out. Literally stood waiting over 20 minutes (30 minutes after placing the order) so about an hour for a simple order of soup and pad Thai. read more

Well, I got a to-go order of pork drunken noodles and veggie spring rolls. When I arrived, I asked the woman who was working if she could add meat spring rolls to my order. She ignored my request. I can only guess it was because she didn't seem to speak English very well. No biggie. I'll pass then. When I got home, I tried the spring rolls which were delicious, but when I opened the pork drunken noodles, there was a pool of oil visible in the to go box. I drained it off and dug in. The first bite had great flavor, but unfortunately it was overshadowed by the overcooked and very dry meat, mixed with bits of charred residue that I still cannot determine the point of origin, and soggy noodles that began disintegrating upon stirring the meal. No exaggeration! A true bummer, because as I stated earlier, the flavor profile was on point! Oh well. That was my first and last visit here. read more

I never write reviews but the 4 star reviews are misleading. As someone new to Carson City I thought id give this place a try. Ordered Penang Curry. Absolutely disgusting when i got home. It is CLEARLY made with milk and not coconut milk. to the owner, PLEASE fire whoever you have cooking when you are not there. Curry should NEVER be made with cows milk. yuck read more

This place received good reviews but I don't know why. We ordered hot tea and it was tepid at best! We ordered Tom Yum soup and it taste like broth and very bland. We had already ordered the rest of our food and once we tasted the soup, we canceled the order paid for the soup and the tea and hightailed it out of there. The atmosphere was horrible it was right on the side of the mall where the walk away was. I would never recommend this place! That's the most horrible customer service I have ever had in restaurants! We ordered one Pad Thai and one Pad See Ew, and requested less sweet and less greasy as we are a light flavor eaters. The owner was a little bit reluctant to accept the requested and took the payment. Later, he told they didn't have Pad See Ew noodle, then I compromise to take both Pad Thai. When the foods were ready, he said we can taste them and see if they can correct anything. I opened them and found they ended up giving chicken instead of beef (which was what we ordered). My mom tasted with a small bite, and she thought it was too sweet. I told the owner about it and asked for beef. He said he is refusing to serve us since he was not comfortable with serving us, then he said we could take the foods for free. I thought he did not understand me fully since I had some language barrier, so I tried to explain more clearly. Then my mom did not want to argue anymore but try to leave to head out and grab the foods to go. At this moment, he immediately snatched out the foods out of her hand and throw them into trash! That's totally their fault not to provide beef even at the point of order we all confirmed together! Not only they did not correct the food, but treat us worse than homeless people begging for free food!!! This is totally unacceptable! Very unreasonable and extremely insulting to us!!! I never see such customer service manner!!! We were completely shocked they treat us like that, even before they refund the money! I can't believe I haven't written a review before now. I eat at Thai Thai every couple of weeks or so as I work nearby. The girls always know my order when I walk in the door - chicken pad thai, spice level 2. Kong the owner has explained his pad thai to me - his is not like the typical pad thai people are use to. I really like that Kong has made it his own. The lime slice is a nice touch. I love adding the lime juice. I've been to Thai Thai for dinner as well and usually have the King George or the Drunken Noodles. Both are great and full of flavor. I'm dropping them down 1 star for the lunch prices. For the pad thai and a soda the total is around $14. I do have to say though that the portion size is large enough that I usually make two meals out of it. Good homestyle Thai food! Thai food can be hit and miss, but here it is a definite hit. I ordered the Drunken Noodles with Chicken and found the serving size to be perfect.
