I would rate yesterday's visit a 2 1/2 star. Kei has been my favorite for a long time but I notice lately there are a lot of new chefs. They aren't making the rolls the way they used to. The last two to go orders I got had no sauces on them which was a major bummer. Yesterday's trip, the Tom roll was made wrong and was really terrible. I could tell the chef didn't know what she was doing. The crystal shrimp inside our roll was way over cooked leaving the entire roll with a burnt taste, it just wasn't good so we didn't eat much. I hope they get some better chefs and hang on to them because the new batch of chefs is not great. This visit was not enjoyable and neither was the food. read more

Love their food BUT they get only 3 's because they NEVER answer their phone and always have it off the hook. I tried to order online and it says it's suspended. Very disappointing. What an average and rather disappointing experience vs other times. We came in for dinner. Service was slow but it was busy. We ordered 2 of the Hawaiian Chicken. They have a lunch price and a dinner price which is of course more expensive. We have ordered it at lunch before and enjoyed it. When we received it (as a dinner for more money) whoever scooped up the chicken to put in the pineapple went so skimpy that it was a smaller than when we ordered it for lunch! We also ordered a couple of rolls. One was falling apart when picking up. I had all you could eat and I enjoyed it but again getting our servers attention was hard. Kei sushi has been a long time favorite of my family (we've been going here for well over 10 years). The rolls are delicious and inventive, the ambiance is wonderful, the green tea ice cream is always a perfect end to the meal. Our server today, Jael was incredibly attentive and provided wonderful service. I always recommend this place any time someone asks me where to get sushi. read more

Overall restaurant was clean (our menus were slightly sticky and could have used a wipe-down) and was dimly lit. All of the employees were friendly and checked on us often. The sushi chef was quick with making rolls and did a great job interacting with us as we were sitting at the sushi bar. All of the sushi was balanced with the fish to rice ratio. Literally the best fresh fish I've ever had. Mussels and raw nigiri are my favorite. My favorite rolls is probably the Ninja and Alligator. But I live trying something different too. I don't even know what to say. We came in wanting to be seated for a party of seven but there was some hesitation from the host and the server from the beginning. We were aware that last seating is at 8:30 and we arrived at 7:30. They couldn't accommodate us together as a big party and we suggested that we would be willing to split. We then walked outside and the waitress followed to tell us that they would be willing to seat us split but they would be charging each table a 20% gratuity? EACH table?? First visit to Kei sushi in Carson City. There's also a location in Reno. This is a small restaurant off of route 50 in Carson. It's in a shopping mall, strip mall. There are about 20 tables and the sushi bar available for seating. We were seated promptly and asked if we were having all you can eat which is available for $33.99 at dinner time. There's also a selection of signature cocktails, wine and beer. We enjoyed a Merlot and Zinfandel. We were a group of four so we ordered to share. There is an extensive menu of rolls, hand rolls, appetizers. All you can eat is unlimited appetizers and rolls plus ice cream for dessert. The sushi was served promptly and everything was fresh and delicious. I especially like the baked mussels and the grasshopper roll. We tried probably 10 different roles so they were all good. I recommend this restaurant for fresh and tasty sushi. It is also open for lunch. read more

I love going to Kei because the service is always great, their nigiri is my favorite from an all you can eat spot in town, and they have a great selection of rolls with lemon slices. This was my first time at the Carson location, and I appreciated how it was a more intimate vibe than the restaurant in Reno. The service at Kei is decent. Nothing over the top but they do check in on you and despite being constantly busy the food rolls out within a reasonable time. The rolls and nigiri are all very tasty. They have great fun combos like the salmon lover which is a texture dream if you like that, packs a little crunch into the roll on top. We liked almost everything we got which lately when I've ordered rolls at restaurants they have seemed bland. I did not have that experience with Kei. We had to wait an hour since we didn't have a reservation. They were up front about the wait. What it tells me as we say watching is the place is crazy busy which is usually a great sign. When The Widder Prime is argumentative with me, I know the key to escaping trouble... and that's taking her to Kei Sushi. The wife has to remind everyone in ear shot that she knows sushi. She starts off with the Panko fried mussels and I ease into it with some tasty miso soup. The Wife Boss usually snags some different rolls, but must be made to her liking (basically no Sriracha or wasabi on anything!) After multiple different rolls, I always end it with a simplified California roll. Great service here and awesome sushi! read more

I've been to this restaurant before and had a great experience, but after this last visit I will never be going back. We came in as a party of 7 around 7:50. I understand they have a sign on the door that says last seating is at 8:30, so we thought we were well within their hours. At first, they said they couldn't accommodate all 7 of us, so we offered to split into two smaller groups, which they agreed to. About 5 minutes later, the hostess came back and told us that because the cooks were upset, they would need to charge a 20% gratuity AND still seat us separately. I always tip generously and have no problem doing so for good service, but forcing a gratuity when we're essentially being treated as two different parties just feels unfair. It's really upsetting because I used to enjoy this place, but after this experience, I won't be returning. read more

I seem to be the only one in our family that doesn't like Sushi. But as long a Japanese place has a Bento box, I'm good to go out. our Sushi-loving Darling Granddaughter (DGD) was in town last week and we did that cuisine twice. The first time was at Tomo Sushi in South Carson which has always been a solid choice. Before the second time, we took her up to Virginia City and on the way back I suggested that we try something new. We looked up Kei (off US 50 close to I-580) and decided to go there. The old stereotype is that law enforcement frequent donut shops. In the case of Kei, there was a table full of hungry Nevada Highway Patrol officers when we came in. I took that as a good omen. Overall service was very good and we found the dining room to be comfortable and quiet, especially in our corner booth. We came in early enough as we noticed that the place had filled up during our meal. I'd come back to Kei simply because they have several good non-Sushi choices on their menu that aren't called Bento. I ordered the Yaki Udon noodles with chicken that was not only very tasty, but was in large enough quantity to make for a good Lunch the next day. Gayle and DGD had their usual favorites and thought everything was at least as good as Tomo. Both have "All You Can Eat" Sushi options for the hungrier members of the family. read more

Here's the scoop. Excellent quality fish here and fast service (they had like 4-5 sushi chefs on a Friday night for not that big of a place) Had AYCE for $33. Selection is good except very disappointing they didn't have Ikura or Uni as previous reviews mentioned they had. No Uni is understandable as it can be seasonal and expensive and is not part of most all AYCEs. But they should have Ikura. Rice was undercooked. Service was great. The atmosphere is a lot nicer than the ugly strip mall location would lead you to expect. Can be a wait on weekends so call ahead to get an idea of what the wait is. read more

Service: The guy that helped us out at the bar was very kind BUT it took him 45 minutes to make us three rolls. We sat there in front of him and just waited which is totally fine but this is sushi...the longest I've ever waited and I had just sat down. A little disappointed and upset especially after the fact that the chef said, "they're suppose to make 8 rolls in 5 minutes" so essentially 96 rolls in an hour. The 45 minutes we sat there he made 6 rolls and all for the person right next to us. The server also only showed up once and messed up our drink order and never came back. We were very respectful the whole time though and always thanked them every time we got a new plate. Also would like to add, the chef carried the intercom speaker (mind you it's very dirty) and persisted to touch and make sushi rolls. Very disappointing Food: Overall it was decent. The wife and I went to have Sushi on Saturday August 2 2025. We were asked is it all you can eat? We stated yes. We were sat at a table and ordered our appetizers. We then proceeded to order our rolls which we always have prepared with soy paper. We are sorry we are out of soy paper. Why were we not told that before sitting at table. Our waitress did the best she could and charged us an Ala Carte fee. We won't be going back. There are plenty of Sushi restaurants in Carson City. read more

This is my second review, but many times we've been here and always enjoy the food. Date night tonight was excellent and I just wanted to shout out Caleb (s/p?) who was our sushi chef tonight at the bar seating. He was proficient, attentive, funny, easy to talk to and his sushi making was impeccable. We even paid extra after doing all you can eat to take some to go for later.
