I came a month before my wedding desperate for a white color qipao to wear as my evening gown (yes, not a typical qipao color but I wanted a white/ivory color to match my wedding dress). After getting discouraged checking with 6 other stores at the Asian Garden Mall that all did not have a qipao in white or the style I was looking for, I checked Thanh Trang. They were so friendly, welcomed me, and I asked what I needed and they said "we don't have one, but - we can make it for you". I was beyond impressed. They told me it was a going to be a very tight timing but they'd make it for me by my wedding. I just picked the fabric and they hand crafted the most detailed beautiful dress. They should take some classes on customer service because she is the rudest person I've ever encountered. They are all judge mental, mean, and not helpful. " I won't ever give them a dollar of my money bc I'd rather support a humbling business that wants my business. The owner treats you like absolute trash! The styles are out dated and ugly! How did I miss the 'People Hate Us On Yelp' window cling at this store? Oh, that's right, these window clings aren't real--but the reviews are, and why didn't I think to check first! Pros: Velour options Everything on hangers (nothing in plastic bags in cardboard boxes) Clear/spacious aisles for easy browsing Was shown same dress with two different neck styles by mean/pushy saleslady with short hair (saleswoman 1) Ceiling can lights give tryphobia chills Cons: Treated as second rate customer/horrendous customer service by saleswoman 1; other saleswoman with longer, curled hair seemed kind but didn't talk to me and dressmakers seemed kind but also didn't speak to me. It's like there's a hex on the store while saleswoman 1 runs the show. I didn't get it. Was asked to leave the fitting room twice by saleswoman 1 while trying on ao dai to accommodate two customers who came in separately after me. I found a velour one I loved loved loved, but after the fitting room debacle trying on the velour one with two different neck styles, decided the dress wasn't worth my money and my dignity, plus, was receiving no customer service on fit/sizing when I realized the high collar on the dress I loved was too big. I've grown up year after year seeing this store in Phuc Loc Tho (Asian Garden Mall) but I've never gone! I came in for fun last year to look and I'll be honest they are a bit pushy to get you to try on their stuff but if you are serious about getting an ao dai, they'll actually suggest you things. I can see where people say they're rude and they can come off that way. My sister and I came in last minute to find one to wear for Lunar New Year and we were picking out some to try and both had 3 dresses in our hands--the lady told us to stop picking them out and try them on because we'll get confused and flustered otherwise! And when we were when trying to put on everything it became a mess in the changing room. For Lunar New Year you want to wear red or bright colors, and I had a dark navy blue and black dress in my hands. When the lady found that we were wearing them to temple hop on New Years, she took the dress out of my hands and said wear "happier colors" and gave me a different one. They don't really have a dressing room as it's more of a storage room. They WILL be trying to give you different colored pants, check how it fits, opening the door on you a bit, being pushy. I'm a bit whatever about this and don't care but I know a lot of people will not like this so beware! The ladies suggested me a green and another one in yellow that I never would have chose myself but looked great on. I ended up going with a maroon to white fade ao dai I found with taupe pants she suggested and I was in love! I WILL admit. If you are not a size 6ish or smaller, a LOT of things will not come in size. They cater to Asian sizes and we all know how big American sizes are. Its basically their inventory and everything else is custom made. However, like me the sleeves didn't fit well on the arms and my pants were too big and long. She easily was able to adjust the sizing on both in about 20 mins and it for so much better. You do NEED to tell them firmly that it doesn't fit in some places and to fix them. She didn't hem the pants like I asked and she told me it would look better on me if I wore heels....and it did when I put my wedges on! Here is how the conversation went with the ladies that worked there: Me: Hello, what size traditional ao dai hats do you have? Can you measure her (my fiancee's) head to see if you have any that fit? Lady: Why don't you measure yourself? Use a measuring tape. Are you buying? Me: We are just looking at the moment, we need to know if you have any hats her size before we decide to buy. This is the best store in Bolsa for traditional Vietnamese & Chinese dresses. My husband and I got 2 outfits here for lunar new year and we're very happy about it. The ladies here are very knowledgeable and especially the boss lady. This establishment has been here for decades and for the simple reason is they have the best material, prettiest designs and they have an in-house tailor that can customize your outfits. The last place you want to get your traditional ao dai! One thing this place has going for it is that it is located the hub of the Vietnamese community. Vietnamese people from all over the country will stop by Asian Garden Mall when they come to visit. This store is the only ao dai place in there so it has a monopoly. My experience was not the best. I went in looking for material for my ao dai without my mother. They had fabrics neatly arranged throughout the store. It was easy to look through and see what I could find. What I didn't like was the ladies just staring at me like I was their prey. One did ask me if I needed help and like an idiot I told them what I was looking for. Then she gets another person to help her and they bring out all this material that was not very modern. Most of the fabric was pretty tacky in my opinion. Sequins and glitter everywhere. Not my style. Anyways, she tried to talk me into buying this material that I was very hesitant about. Parts of it I liked, but other parts were not very attractive. Ao dais are custom made so I wouldn't be able to return it if it eventually turned out bad. I am willing to pay for quality, so I'm not going to rush this decision. I told them that I was only there for the weekend and they said they could rush it overnight for me. I started questioning the quality of their work because outfits for important events like my engagement outfit cannot be rushed. They just kept hovering around me so ultimately, I said I couldn't buy it without having my mother look at it and left. Obviously they were salty about it, but I hated all that pressure to buy. Liars!!! I found the perfect hat in their shop and paid the cost to remake the hat and pay for shipping to Texas. I was very patient as my engagement festivities were going to be three months from the order date and Lan told me if would only take a month. Lan was nice when I was there and I even bought my fabric for my engagement ao dai from her. As I was very excited and patient to see my new hat because the one in the shop was dirty with yellow splotches all over the top. When it arrived I was very much DISAPPOINTED as it was still dirty with yellow and grey spots. They have nothing to say about it as it is what it is. A new item should be in clean and spotless condition. Not with yellow gunk that I can get rid of. It even shows up in photos! Idk what I'm going to do but I do not recommend trusting these people. My mom and I were shopping for ao dais for my dam hoi when California reopened businesses the first time and this was our fourth stop. The previous stores I visited were either too pricey or did not have styles I liked. Chi Cindy was really helpful and patient with me despite how indecisive I was and I tried on so many ao dais until I found the perfect one. Unfortunately, the style I loved didn't fit me and so she said she could make it custom-fit for me which was only ~$20 more than buying it already made. In addition, she helped me order a matching ao dai for my fiancé at a low price. She said it would take her about 8 weeks to get done since she had other orders but she was done within 6.5. She's very responsive on text which is hard to find in Vietnamese businesses and she speaks both Viet and English fluently. Both my fiancé and I received so many compliments at our engagement ceremony and it showed up very regally in photos! read more

It has been about 6 whole months and still haven't received my dress. My poor grandma had to come by every weekend to check on the process. My grandma lives nearby so I don't understand the hold up. It is so aggravating to pay so much for a dress I have not received. When my grandma confront what is taking so long the owner said "your grand daughter is bigger so the fabric and time to make takes longer". Like bruhh Six months tho?! I was excited to check this ao dai place out as my mom had previously gotten her custom ao dai made years ago and it was beautiful. They have some pretty, intricate, and high quality fabrics. However, I did not purchase an ao dai here because I was turned off by the rude, pushy service! The woman kept watching over my friend and I as I tried in the different dresses and repetitively told me how I looked "good" in each dress I tried on and how she'd charge me $65 for a whole set (ao dai and pants). There was one ao dai with a design I liked that CLEARLY did not fit me as it was too small. But she insisted that I looked "GREAT" in it. When asked if she had a different size, she kept repeating it looked fine insisting/pushing aggressively that I purchase it. My friend then asked her again if she had another size, and she FINALLY admits that she did not. It was such a STRESSFUL experience being in the store. There was another customer trying on ao dai's too who also told us she was feeling stressed from her experience. Finally, when we told the sales woman we did not find anything we liked, she gave us an attitude and quickly took the dresses away. On top of the rude and pushy service, while changing in their changing room, I noticed that there was a security camera ABOVE THE ROOM! I am not sure if it was directed towards the changing room because it had one of those spheres covering the camera, but it was unsettling knowing that there is a possibility we were being filmed changing. read more

Pro: Lots of fabric to choose from, the seamstresses in the back are very talented and shapes the dress very well to your body Cons: pushy, shady, terrible business ethics, expensive Please keep in mind I grew up in the Bolsa area so I'm accustom to what some people would consider rude but average Vietnamese behavior. They have a lot of fabrics to choose from and the craftsmanship of the ladies in the back is great with the measurements they are given. The main sales lady is extremely pushy and compliments you only to make a sale as soon as you appear uninterested or make a complaint she gives you an attitude, the elderly lady at the counter is extremely sweet and try to talk to her instead! I paid under $200 for my red lace ao dai with a V neck. I showed them a picture and specifically asked for the lace to line my wrist and neckline. I wanted a bra sewn into my dress but the pushy lady said she cant, the older lady said yes when i asked her, the pushy lady said its extra but the older lady late told me its fine they will do it. When I came to pick it up a week later the neck line was terrible, they made the dress and then put out lace and sewed it onto the neckline in an attempt to save fabric because the lace only runs at the top and bottom of the raw fabric. The pushy lady told me thats how its done here and that it looks great on me, and put it in a bag. Upon closer inspection I saw that the thread on the lace was falling apart and that there were multiple HOLES in the fabric and pieces of lace were GLUED on to cover it up. When i showed her the thread she pulled it out, unraveling the lace flower, and said "see its just a loose thread". I refused to leave and continued to complain, the lady said thats how it is and no one would notice anyways. I relented so the pushy lady told me to talk to the owner two stores down at another custom ao dai shop. They promised to fix it but I made them remake it with new fabric, it took them 2 weeks but the final product was what i wanted and fitted me well. Some spots on the fabric had tiny holes in the net but my mom just said she would fix it if they give her extra fabric, we didnt want them to mess with it anymore. BTW a bra was not sewn into the dress as promised. The pushy lady told me my other dress was so beautiful someone bought it off the rack, so they knowing sell their defective products to people too! FYI on my wedding day when I changed into my ao dai the 2nd time the zipper broke. My mom also got measured for an ao dai and paid a deposit for one, but didnt pick it up because it looked so terrible on her. Please be careful and double check every inch of their work, if you can pick your fabric and get the price at this shop and go to the owners shop to finalize the deal, seems like shes more customer oriented. I probably wont be back though. They also sell the traditional headdress at the shop for $45, but I had one of my relative bring me one from Vietnam for $5, it comes in multiple shades of red so keep that in mind if you choose to get it somewhere else to match your ao dai. read more

WORST EXPERIENCE EVER! If I could give them zero stars I would. I'm vietnamese and had my mom, who speaks fluent vietnamese, go with me. They are rude, pushy, and scammers. All they care about is getting their money. Unfortunately I drove all the way from AZ to have my wedding ao dai made, and thought after all the trouble, they could at least make an ao dai with the fabric my mom bought from Vietnam. NOPE, that was disappointing and they couldn't even get the sleeves correct on the ao dai. It was obvious that they weren't even and they kept insisting that it was even. Ended up just taking it as is and will have my aunt fix the sleeves. Didn't want to risk them ruining it even more so. I'm a little shocked by their negative reviews because my experience was satisfying and thinking of coming back to get my traditional dress tailored for my beauty pageant. Anyway, they have cloth designs for all type of ages..of course not mutual, but different designs of different colors and from different parts of Vietnam and some chinese. Please note that this was my first time having service here. It took me almost an hour to pick out the design to my liking because they have so many beautiful designs. It took her only 5 minutes or less to take down my size and only 3 days to put my dress together. When I came in to pick up my dress, she had me try it on and it was just so perfect but she still made some alterations to make it look better..which I appreciated very much. It looked so great. Not only that but she had it steam cleaned the day prior to my pick up. I can tell because there was still a tag from the drying company attached to it and the smell from it was fresh! The prices of the dresses vary from designs, type of cloth, whether it was custom-made or pre-made. Of course pre-made ones are a lot cheaper with the tailor's alterations to your body. Which ranges anywhere from $20-$60. Fairly cheap for what they offer for you and what they can do to alternate the dress to your fitting. I picked the a purple cloth with lots of jewels and bejazzles with silk. Down payment is about $100 or if you want, you can pay full then and there..which I did. My total payment was $148. She takes suggestions to what you like to do to the dress after she takes your money (which is great because you won't be charged with bogus things) or she gives you suggestions as to what type of designs that would look great on you. I've tried many other places before but this is my favorite even though the ladies are very pushy about whatever cloth you should buy. Don't fall for it, take your time picking the cloth. If they keep pestering you, tell them to shut up :) This place was initially my second choice to Cynthia Bui but she was booked for that week. I have yet to try the famous Cynthia Bui and maybe I'll come back to compare the two in about a year or so. read more

She pulled out 2 blue ao dai from a rack i was looking at and I was saying im im too fat for those sizes and also they are not in the style or color that I want. She urged me to the changing room to try them on and i was a push over and couldn't say no. Once im in there, the ao dai was as tight as i expected so i was like no this wont work, she continued to pulled another blue ao dai with cheap looking beads and told me to try on while i said i wanted to try a pink one and shes said pink r so out of fashion no ones wear it anymore. They are actually a Vietnamese wedding/traditional dress store. But they have a rack just for chinese qi pao. I bought my qi pao for my wedding here. Their selection isn't huge but they have the basic kinds of qi pao. Its definitely not as fancy as some of those custom made places but the quality is pretty decent. I like this place because it's very affordable. I bought my dress for $40 including tailor. They have sizes from S to XXL, and you pick the dress from the rack. You pick the size that fits closest to you, then you pick the color/pattern that you like. And then you try it on. If you like it, you tell the lady you like it. And then, you pay her, and she puts a bunch of pins on the dress. You take off the dress, and she gets to work on her sewing machine to tailor the dress to fit you better. She's FAST!! She finish in 10-15 minutes, and Voila! the dress fits you! They will also do custom-made for you if you bring in a pictures. I think they charge $100 for a custom-made one. It's better if you go with a vietnamese speaking friend, but I don't speak vietnamese, and we could get away with basic English. And when you're done, walk across the hallway and have some Pho 79!!!! =D read more

I needed to find a good tailor around my area to alternate my uniform. I have 2 work dresses to fix, both identical, and needs to be shorten and taken in. so I took one dress here, and another dress to the tailor across the street ( It has high rating from Yelp) Just for experiment and checked out their prices. Most people cant just do that with their designer jeans and dresses. she asked for $20 for shorten and taken in the dress. It took her 15mins and she had me do another fitting to make sure it was fixed properly. I was so shocked at how fast and affordable she is. and The dress came out to be fitted very well. My other dress is still sitting at the other tailor shop. I will pick it up next Tuesday, and they charged me $33 ($8 for shorten, $25 for taken in the extra). Will update this review after I get that dress back. read more

Thank goodness I know that there are other places which can provide ao dai's other than this awful place. I rented mine from Hollywood Bridal off Bushard and Bolsa. Unfortunately, I have a big head and a lot of hair, so their hats at Hollywood Bridal did not fit. I wanted to go ahead and look around before I custom ordered one from Vietnam. I come to Thanh Trang, and I had to go to the back to seek out someone who worked there. They made it seem like I was inconveniencing them. When my fiance asked if I could try on a hat, they automatically asked if we were planning to buy, and he said we don't know because I need to try them on first. They told us to come back when we are ready to buy. I will not do that, ever.If I had found something there today, and if they treated me with respect, I would have bought something from them.Their Ao Dai's are beautiful, their customer service is crap. It is true that they make beautiful ao dais, BUT, they really do have horrible customer service. They are very pushy, have no patience, & even if you are still willing to buy something from them, they still can be rude. My boyfriend & I had traveled from Oregon, & one of my desires was to go to California to this mall to get an ao dai for our wedding. We went there, & told them that I want to buy an ao dai. They were speaking Vietnamese to me (Im full Asian; half Vietnamese & half Mien), but I told them that I don't know the language. They were a little bit rude when they found out I couldn't speak the language. Yes, I feel ashamed for not knowing the language. Anyways, I was trying to figure out which fabric I want; the lady, like I said earlier, did not have any patience that she led me to a different ao dai store (a couple stores down) to have a different worker deal with me. Yes, her behavior was very rude, according to what my boyfriend said. What was strange is that the Thang Trang store charges you $300 for a custom ao dai while this other store cost a little bit more for some reason (almost $325). The other store, I couldn't remember this other worker's name, she was young & speaks English very well. She was also more understanding & MORE nicer that we told her what we wanted, she lead us back to the other store & talked to the other workers. Of course, I felt pressured from them, again, & told them I will take a look carefully since I am a very picky person. There, they left me alone to look at the fabrics, finally. I was able to find one that I really liked, and the workers & I were able to communicate okay of the process especially that I wanted a robe & a hat. Having the other young worker really helped since she was able to translate our conversation with them. Don't get me wrong, the rude workers were able to speak some English, it was just their accent was pretty strong that it was hard to understand. When the workers found out my boyfriend & I were planning to go back home the next day early morning, they told me it is important to have a fitting that they were even willing to work the ao dai dress in ONE night, & want me to come back the next day at 11 AM (I think the mall opens that time on Saturdays) to see if I am able to fit well in it. We said okay, paid them in full, & came back the next day. We came back, the workers were more friendly that they were even teaching my boyfriend how to say "beautiful" in Vietnamese since they saw how he was smiling when he saw me wearing the dress. My boyfriend & I were, at first, scared because we weren't sure if the dress is going to look that beautiful in one night, BUT, we were wrong & blown away of how beautiful, BEAUTIFUL the work of the dress is. Yes, there were a few little threads here & there, but it's an easy fix. Anyways, they asked me if my address is right (I gave them my address the day before since they told me the robe & hat won't be done until a month, & that they would ship them to me). One of them told me that it might take a little longer than a month, so I was glad she let me know ahead of time. Oh, just before my boyfriend & I had left, we told them that we wanted flower designs added to the hat (since the nice worker was not there the 2nd day we came & she was the one in charge with robe & hat work, we weren't able to ask her & decided to go tell them), & they said they will add it to the hat. A little over a month came, & I was able to received my robe & hat in good condition. BUT, the problem was that, when I saw them, I felt relieved while at the same time, upset. The robe design looked sort of rushed where instead of beads as a pattern (the worker and I had discussed which robe design to be added, she was the one who pointed out one with nice flower designs that had beads sew unto a robe that she has done on another ao dai project), she had used glitter glue. & the hat... there was not only no flower designs added, but there was some glue residue on the front... far away, you can't see the glue, but upclose, you can. I wrote them a letter, & let them know that they forgot to add the designs. Of course, I didn't get a response, but oh well... I was able to find a very nice Vietnamese woman up here who can alter it since she makes ao dais. So that was my experience with them. I gave them two stars because one, the dress is beautiful (the hat & robe are okay), & two, we were able to work well almost near the end especially the young worker's help & service. In my opinion, I believe customer service is important, however, if you want a very nice ao dai & want to choose a fabric from a variety, go for it, BUT, be firm with them of what YOU want since they WILL be pushy. I wish I could give this place a 0 star. I should have read the reviews more closely before going with this place. We got my mother's ao dai dress here, and mine at Silk Image (right outside Phuc Lop Tho). Thanh Trang is rude and their sewing is not good. I'm not expecting them to have Nordstrom-level service, but I do expect them to at least respect customers. They are not helpful. Example: my mother tries on the dress she had custom ordered and as she is opening up the dressing room door (door is opened only 2 inches), the lady says the dress looks good/fine. What?! You can't even see it! When I tried to help my mom with the zipper of her pants, the lady slaps my hand and said "you're not doing it right. Let me do it.". I had to argue with her for 5 minutes for her to agree to do a 5 minute adjustment (taking the pants waist in). Then, I had to argue another 5 minutes to get her to do another 5 minute adjustment (pants hem). They weren't even busy, so I don't understand what the problem was. So by the time I wanted them to fix the chest area (it was too loose on the chest), I was just so sick and tired of them, I didn't bother. Zero stars... The lady is pushy n all about her money..! And annoying to try to make u buy her fabrics. Unfortunately she had what I was looking for but later on I changed my mind and thought the design was too busy and I wanted an exchange . The next day I came to the shop again and she told me to come back later on during the day!! Wtf? I don't have time for this BS! She said it's because she hasn't made money yet n I will give her bad luck through out the day. I understand philosophy but omg... This is America now.. We don't have time for that... Like most of the reviews, I wish I could give zero stars as well! Also, wish I ran across their yelp page before making my unpleasant trip there. My intentions were just to "look," but the sales lady thought otherwise. She was pushy, impatient, and rude. To keep it short and simple, steer far away from this place, they do not deserve anyone's business with the lack of decent customer service. I'm surprised at all the negative reviews, I had a great experience! I was looking to get an ao dai made for my college graduation, and the saleswomen were very helpful. I am most definitely bigger than the average Vietnamese woman, and the saleswoman was a little worried that I wouldn't fit into any of the premade ones, but she was perfectly polite. I wanted a custom made ao dai, and there was a big selection of fabrics to choose from. I paid $75 then and $75 when I picked it up a week later. The ao dai was absolutely gorgeous, and fit me very well; the arms were not perfect when I tried it on, but she fixed it in about half an hour. I cannot recommend this place highly enough. read more
