It was not only the middle of the night, but it was a cold, sub-zero, snowy night as well. Alan Dorfman sent some people out to the house to get her and also arranged to meet us later in the day on Saturday to discuss the arrangements. We found Alan Dorfman to be kind and understanding, with just the right touch of humor to lighten the mood. He also had the records from our grandmother, over a decade earlier, so he was able to just copy some of the information. My mother wanted to be cremated, so there was no urgency in terms of a service, and no need for a casket. He helped us to decide on the kind of memorial we wanted, told us that we could do it when we were ready, and that we could take a couple days to decide. He also recommended a videographer to put pictures on DVDs. (It was nice, but the videographer didn't seem to know much about the technology he was working with.) Jonathan Dorfman was very patient with us in regards to the obituary. We made changes to it several times. He posted online everything we originally said, but advised us that the same would be very expensive to post in the newspapers, and made suggestions for shortening what we wanted to print. We followed his advice and it saved us several hundred dollars. We are not a traditional Jewish family and did not want any clergy, as my mother would've hated that. Alan assured us that just having friends and family speak would be fine, if that was what we wanted. He asked us about whether or not we wanted some of the traditional amenities, but since we were not familiar with them, we declined -- except for the 7 day memorial candle, and he gave us 2 of them, since my sister & I live in different places. At a very somber, confusing and overwhelming time, Dorfman Chapel will treat you and your loved ones with dignity, grace and compassion.

I telephoned Mrs. McCabe to find out the status of bringing his body back to Michigan from St. Louis because the Medical Examiner had told me that my son's body had been released to McCabe's affiliate. None of the service dates could be set until we had airline information. Instead of explaining to me that the body was released, but ME paperwork wasn't complete so they couldn't make an airline reservation, she simply said that they didn't have airline information yet. When I said that perhaps I should've used a different funeral home, she said maybe you should've! Later, I telephoned Mr. McCabe and asked him if he would give me just a $100.00 discount on my $10,864.89 bill. He told me that he could not give me a discount, otherwise, he would have to change his entire billing structure because everyone gets billed exactly the same. I told him that he could simply give those people that are smart enough to ask for a discount, a hundred dollars off, and anyone stupid enough not to ask for a discount, shouldn't receive a discount. He then accused me of calling him stupid, which I didn't and re-explained to him what I had said. Regardless, later on I heard that he was telling people that I had called him stupid. Remember, I'm mourning and burying my 24 year old child. Even if I had been as rude a possible, they are in the funeral home business and should've been gentle and compassionate with me. Not rude and argumentative. Think twice about using people who act this way towards a person in mourning and shock over their child's death.

My mother-in-law passed away in the middle of the night while under hospice care. we were told we needed to choose a facility immediately for transport. Our plan was a simple cremation, but we also wanted the opportunity to see her one last time to ensure she was treated with dignity. When we contacted the company, we " no one allows that" which is completely untrue. Other funeral homes later confirmed that viewing prior to cremation is absolutely allowed. we were also told we would be charged $500 just for the pickup. While we were willing to pay, the situation became far more distressing when they refused to release her without her estranged husband's signature-even though they have been separated for over 25 years. The funeral home we ultimately chose even reached out to them several times including at 3:30 Pm because they had not followed through as expected. It felt like our loved one was being held hostage until payment was made, which we paid immediately without hesitation. We were also questioned about whether we were having her cremated still, and why we were choosing another cremation provider, which felt inappropriate and unprofessional given the circumstances. The funeral home we ended up working with has been in business for over 60 years and told us they had never encountered behavior like this. During a time when compassion, professionalism, and respect are critical, this experience was the exact opposite. i would strongly urge others to carefully consider their options.
