It is centrally located -- a mere five-minute drive from downtown Valpo. The hotel is clean. You get a free breakfast and free coffee all day. (This is important! I needed some late-night energy.) The bed was oh so comfortable. Also: The shower had a tub. This feature is not something I usually care about, because I don't usually take baths, either at hotels or in general. I don't like sitting there in a tepid pool of my own filth. But on the night that I visited this hotel, I was feeling luxurious. So, I drew a bath and luxuriated. It was nice. There's a restroom in the lobby, in case you need to use the loo after driving a long time. In the morning, there's a free breakfast with your typical free hotel breakfast items: bagels, muffins, little containers of Yoplait, dry cereal, powered eggs. The coffee is also decent! I would definitely stay here again if I ever find myself in Valparaiso. This is a more than decent hotel that's super close to lots of things in Valpo.

The water is a tad cool but the heat was blasting. So we didn't feel freezing cold after we left the pool. 3) Complimentary breakfast is a very convenient and easy solution when traveling with young children. Breakfast is served between 6 and 10 AM. The morning hotel manager was very kind to give stickers to my girls and offered me to-go bags to take some muffins and cereal in case my girls would get hungry on the road. I didn't take the offer but I really appreciate the thoughtfulness. He also gave us two bottles of water before we left which came in handy when we brought our girls to a nearby playground and it was scorching hot. Cons: 1) I don't know if all of the Hilton hotels are switching over to this Zero brand of toiletry. So far I have stayed at two Hilton hotels in Indiana and both of them are using this brand. I am not a fan. I had to apply a very generous amount of soap and shampoo before it actually foamed up.

However, Jim (the owner and host), was extremely gracious and welcoming. We went straight to our rooms after a brief "interview" with Jim. Necessary to determine our likes and dislikes for breakfast. Our rooms were beautiful. Impeccably kept. We learned Jim is responsible for laying the tile in the bathrooms. There aren't any televisions in the rooms on purpose. I'll be sure to pack a book next time I stay at a B&B. Our daughter was with us so it was nice to visit with her instead of being distracted by a television. Our first morning, we had breakfast with a few of the other guests. Jim prepared Scrambled Eggs served in a Roasted Bell Pepper, with Asparagus, Garlic Grits (AMAZING), salad and fruit. Prior to receiving our main breakfast course, we were served warm, cinnamon bananas and also a chocolate croissant. The next morning, we had a private breakfast. We were served Poached Pears, a Carrot Cake muffin, followed by Quiche, Potatoes, Sausage, & fruit. Both days, Jim catered to my daughter's dislike of eggs making her French Toast with Cinnamon Apples the first day and Oatmeal with Cinnamon Apples (our suggestion) the second day. The entire Inn is very inviting. Jim sat with us at breakfast our second and last morning and shared his story with us. Highly recommend the Valparaiso Inn. So glad we were booked here.

We always give places an opportunity to make it right when something goes wrong, and this place just really missed the mark. After checking in, our room key didn't work, so we headed back down and got it fixed. Then at about 10:30pm someone tried to enter our room- not a big deal, as this happens from time to time, but still disturbing when you're almost asleep. What was different here is that they came back at about 10:45 and the HOTEL HAD GIVEN THEM A KEY TO OUR ROOM. The door opened as our kids were asleep, waking them up, scaring the family. Luckily, we'd closed the lock on the inside of the door. To make matters worse, the front desk then called our room at 11:30 to ask our name, again waking the family up. A rough start to our night, to say the least! After talking in the morning to the front desk staff, the GM called a couple of days later to try and "make it right". They couldn't credit our stay because it was third party (booked on a travel website). We said it would be fine if they gave us points toward another stay instead. The manager gave us 2500 points. If you didn't know, you might think this was generous, but in Radisson Reward Points this is the equivalent of 8% of the cost of a room for the night or $11... an absolute insult. The staff was over worked, made critical mistakes, and then didn't make it right. The property is tired, and in need of a lot of updates- fixtures were loose, carpet stained, elevator made scary noises, and the pool and hot tub were freezing cold. Stay elsewhere!

We stayed 2 days for a wedding the weekend after Memorial Day, and my first issue was that it was $212 a night in Valparaiso...to put in perspective, we paid less per night at the Sheraton in Niagara Falls with a Falls view for our honeymoon. They would NOT give me the wedding block price as the block had "sold out". I have never heard of this happening before. So I paid the $212 a night as all the other same level hotels were around the same price. I checked with the front desk on Saturday morning at 9:30am to make sure that we had the room turned over (clean sheets, towels, etc) and when I came back to the room at 3:30 in the afternoon, the room was not clean. I stopped at the desk to ask why and was told that 4 housekeepers had called off AFTER I'd talked to them. They told their housekeeping staff to only clean the rooms that people checked out of and then to go home. Only offered me 1k points, which doesn't do much for me as I don't travel often, so at that point, I asked for manager's email. Emailed the manager Melissa who promptly offered me the same points and no monetary compensation. I called IHG directly who essentially said they couldn't do anything since locations are franchised and they don't process payments. I emailed Melissa back again and pushed for compensation, but my email was ignored. This is not how you run a business or get people to return. For almost $500 for 2 nights w tax, I expect better.

As soon as you walk in, it smells like an old musty hotel. Check-in was fine and pretty quick. The hallways weren't too bad and it looks like they replaced the carpet. Some genius has the a/c down to 60 degrees and it is only 61 outside. And, who had the bright idea of having a bathroom door, right in front of the motion detecting light switch. Nothing like doing magic in the dark to get the light to come on. Then i realized the door was in front of it. And, then there is a motion light switch in the bathroom. The curtain on the window kept out the morning sunlight. The closet was large enough. The TV worked. The night clerk was pleasant, although new. There were enough luggage carts. On the negative side: In the FIRST room we got, the heating system was not working, so we had to switch rooms. We checked in, turned the heat on, unpacked, and went out to dinner. Ninety minutes later, the room was still only 62 deg F. With the outside temp heading into the 30s that night, we knew it was going to get colder in that room, so we switched rooms. In our second room, there was mold on the shower curtain. There was a big crack in the sink, and there were water stains on the floor underneath. There weren't enough electrical outlets. The mattresses were soft and they sagged in the middle. The top cover on one of the double beds was dirty. The maid forgot to restock the toilet paper and Kleenex. The back security door had no security mechanism so anyone could walk into the hotel from the back without being noticed. The breakfast was awful - the eggs were overcooked and dry and the potatoes (tater tots?) were ROCK HARD and cold - I literally could not cut them with the plastic knife. Our key quit working in the morning and the night accounting clerk told me that probably someone inside had locked me out (instead of just making me a new key). The message light on our phone was blinking and no one at the front desk could figure out how to either retrieve the message or shut off the light. There was no card on the phone indicating what buttons to press to retrieve messages. The morning clerk was rude. At checkout, she never looked up or made eye contact. It took her over two minutes to figure out how to print our receipt, then what she printed wasn't our receipt but instead was our original reservation. We stay at Quality Inns frequently. This is the worst we've experienced, definitely not up to the standard of the brand. We had gotten complacent and would just book a Quality Inn because we thought we would know what to expect. Not so with this property. We'll have to go back to checking Yelp on every Quality Inn from now on.
