They provide everything from medical pedicures (basically a pedicure with a foot soak), to correcting ingrown toenails, to shoe fitting, to custom orthotics. They take service very seriously-- every customer/client is attended to very carefully. I went for treatment on one of my toes-- the technician was very thorough and took his time to do the procedure right. I would rather go here for podiatric technical services instead of trying to get in to see my podiatrist and paying co-payments that are probably equal to the out of pocket cost here. The shoe selection is designed for people who may have chronic foot problems and have trouble finding shoes that fit them, so it's not focused on style. But if you are in that category, you can most likely find something that works for you. I recently had a pedicure with Kari at The Active Foot Store and I am so grateful for the amazing work that she did. You see, it wasn't just a pedicure but a toenail reconstruction. A few years ago I had to have my big toenail removed and it resulted in a minor, but persistent deformity in the nail. Even tho my deformity was small, Kari can do beautiful things with nails, making them look as beautiful as they were before, maybe more so. I made an appointment for a medical pedicure- and paid for it!- 6 weeks ago. The night before my appointment at 10pm I got an email saying my appointment had been cancelled and I would be charged a cancellation fee- only I didn't cancel. So I called an hour before my appointment to confirm, and they said it was an it glitch and I was confirmed. As I was pulling into the parking lot they called to tell me the person I was booked with stopped working Saturdays and my appointment was cancelled. Unreal. The day she changed her schedule they should have started calling her appointments and offering a reschedule- not just a straight cancellation. They weren't even apologetic. Didn't offer to reschedule. Nothing. Just a straight cancellation moments before my appointment. This is unbelievably unprofessional, unorganized, and scammy. I have a severe orthopedic need due to nerve death from spinal injury. I was referred to Dr Rheingold by my ortho surgeon. This is after several disappointing and expensive experiences at other ortho providers. I found Dr Rheingold professional, personable and a great comunicator regarding my needs. He guided me to a great product that gave me my mobility back (within reason) Dr Rheingold and his staff seem to really care about about the clients in the aspect of money; they do not oversell product. I seen the staff work with diabetic patients in the store and they very caring about proper fit. As for the foot soa and nail care associated with diabetes I have no knowledge. The pedicures here are the best I've ever had(I'm really old). It's $55 for the spa pedicure and it's really good. You will not soak your feet here; it's very foot healthy. The technician will use a dremel on your calluses, no chemicals ever are used, only natural products. I started coming here because I have toenail fungus and had been turned away from other salons. After many months, I decided to get the laser treatment for my toenail fungus, and after one month, I can see the results. I'm very pleased. The podiatrist, Dr. Reingold, is very knowledgeable, of course. The bonus is that he had developed the best foot cream EVER. Dr Jack's Extra strength dry skin cream. It's a million times better than Gold Bond, Vaseline and others I've tried over the years. Now it's on Amazon I know it's a lot of superlatives here but this is a wonderful store with wonderful products. My husband gets his diabetic shoes here. read more

The whole store reminds me of a bad experience at the post office. It's full of people doing the absolute minimum. I was referred to AFS by Kaiser. I paid out of pocket for an orthotic device, and was promised 'free adustments' for 90 days. I took my orthotic in for one adjustment, they took it from me as expected, and then called a week later saying and adjustment would be "too hard to do". They refunded my money. What a lame, stupid, thing to do. The whole point of this store is to make orthotic supports, and for some reason if you actually ask them to do their job they say "it's too hard" and just give up. WTF? Dr. Phillip Larkens couldn't have put less effort into helping me. The staff up front are useless as well. Their whole job is running the cash register, and they can't figure it out either. The Active Foot Store is a unique store and spa in Costa Verde mall, across from UTC. It's a smallish shop but they have a nice assortment of stylish orthopedic and diabetic shoes. I know, "stylish" and "orthopedic" seems oxymoronic, but it's true. They really do have some attractive shoes and sandals! They also have a decent assortment of off-the-shelf orthotics, but if you need one custom made, the Active Foot Store is the place to go, and it's why we went there. My husband was having a lot of foot pain from a neuroma and plantar fasciitis and had tried several different orthotics to little effect. Dr. Reingold is the board-certified podiatrist who confirmed his diagnosis, mapped his feet, and patiently explained the mechanics of the problem and how the orthotics would help ease the pain. He's knowledgeable without being condescending and he and my husband hit it off--partly because they are both transplanted New Yorkers. We found out since then that Dr. Reingold has an excellent reputation among other doctors. In fact, my husband's own podiatrist speaks very highly of him and was glad to hear that my husband was getting his custom orthotics made there. When the orthotics came in, they felt strange at first, but, after a couple of subsequent tweaks by Dr. Reingold and some break-in time, they are working very well for him. He's finally able to take his power walks without suffering from neuroma pain. If you're there to buy shoes, their expert shoe-fitters will help you find what you're looking for. They have probably "seen it all," especially Connie. She will spend as much time with you as you need, without pressure to buy. She really cares that you get what you need. I'm sure the same goes for the nail technicians/medical assistants at their medical foot spa. These technicians were trained by Dr. Reingold so you need not worry about contracting infections. I haven't personally tried the foot spa because I do my own pedicures, but if I did, I would definitely go to them. How many other nail salon employees have been trained in sterile tools and techniques by a surgeon? Very few, I'm willing to bet. In conclusion, we highly recommend the Active Foot Store for anyone with new or chronic foot issues. You won't be disappointed! read more

I had an appointment on Saturday, April 24th to get fitted for new custom orthotics. I have had other custom orthotics from another location in San Diego and did not experience anything special but nothing bad, came in, scanned my feet and left. However, I had a COMPLETELY different experience at the Active Foot Store with my appointment with Connie--I had not known what I was missing out on! Connie was hands down amazing! She was extremely thoughtful, kind, and knowledgeable--with keen attention to detail on the specific needs of my individual foot problems. She even went so far as to re-lace my shoes for me to address a different problem, which I felt immediate relief from. I also really enjoyed talking to her about hiking around the San Diego area and she could relate to me, the patient, easily since she also has foot problems. If you have foot issues, I cannot recommend this store and Connie more! I will be coming back to her for all of my orthotics needs in the future because customer service like this does not come frequently. Connie, the owner, actually remembered my first and last name and what size shoe I wear. Besides being so thoughtful, she is INCREDIBLY knowledgeable about feet! My feet are a pain in the but, literally. 0-; I've had 2 appointments with Dr. Reingold the podiatrist and 1 visit with Connie the pedorthist at The Active Foot Store in the costa verde mall. Dr. Reingold had a pair of custom orthotics made for me and Connie patiently helped to fit me into a pair of Aetrex athletic shoes which are deep enough and wide enough to work with my custom orthotics. Hip hurray for a glimmer of hope! (-; On my second visit with Dr. Reingold, he made some adjustments to my custom orthotics. I just want to walk at Disneyland with my granddaughter! Haven't been able to go to Disneyland since before she was born because of my cursed feet. I have had chronic foot problems including plantar fasciitis, metatarsalgia, and other problems in my cursed feet with high arches and a high instep and other wicked foot curses including 2 wrestling little toes that blister easily. I think I'm making progress. I've tried orthotics from other docs but they never fit right in any shoes so they didn't work for me. Yeah I have weird feet. These new orthotics fit right into the shoe that Connie helped me to select. I'll let you all know if I get to Disneyland. I'm up to walking 3 hours a day in the shoes so far. I also swim laps now for exercise at the pool. I dream about hiking in the mountains again someday. I wish for new feet, but for now, I found Dr. Reingold! (-; He's the only podiatrist I've found in San Diego who has his own shoe store. I was scared to meet Dr. Reingold when I read some of the yelp reviews! But I walked into his shoe store and liked his staff so I decided to make an appointment to meet Dr. Reingold. It's true that he looks at your feet a lot instead of into your eyes, as 1 review mentions, but that's fine with me because my eyes don't hurt, so I'd rather have him studying my feet! He's not warm and fuzzy, but that's fine with me, since I need a podiatrist, not a teddy bear. Warning! Do not permit your loved ones to come here alone. Talk about elder abuse. This place belongs on the same list as the nursing homes that get exposed on 60 Minutes. The patients get referred here from a physician in an attempt to protect their aging feet. The Active Foot Store(TAFS) specializes in stocking custom pairs of shoes, sometimes with orthotics insoles. Although the front line staff is helpful and kind to the patients, the Dr. that ultimately has to do the assessment, is dismissive and arrogant to the elderly patients that come in looking for help. My father who is close to 70, was given a degrading verbal scolding by the Dr. about when he is eligible for a new pair of shoes vs. a new pair of insoles. I'm sure the Dr. is making great money with this steady stream of diabetic referrals from Kaiser, but he carries himself like HE is being inconvenienced. I saw this with my own eyes on two seperate visits, so it's hard to think he was just having a bad day. Unfortunately, this elder abuse seems like it's just part of the program here at TAFS. Dr. is quick to rip off a whole bunch of statistics and percentages about how diabetics and elderly patient's feet are likely to be injured and/or amputated without proper care. This is all valuable information, no doubt. However, this information should be given with respect to the patients. Talking down to your patients in a condescending tone is counterproductive. Taking this approach will only lead to patients avoiding your store for follow up care, which leads them right back into neglecting their feet. Remember, this is what brought them to you in the first place. Yes, TAFS is full of seniors that have diabetes, limited mobility, limited vision, limited funds and they are sassy at times. But let's get one thing straight...these patients are paying your salary, and they allow you to enjoy the life you do. It would be wise to have patience with them. Be kind to and allow them to voice their concerns. When they do voice their concerns, look them in the eye and listen to them. One last thing Doc, remember that you too will be a senior one day. Maybe it's time to change your perspective and tighten up your game. Next time, I'm calling social services. P.S. First visit was 2 hours long which I felt was remarkable. Karen patiently explained everything about the foot care I needed and after measuring my right foot which has a huge bunion plus hammer toes & end stage arthritis, and after trying on several pair of orthotics, we found the RIGHT one. She also suggested gel mats when I play ping pong which we will also be using in the kitchen since I spend a lot of time standing in one spot (which is hard on my back as well as my feet). There was no pressure to obligate me to buy anything but I wound up with a comfortable pair of Ortholite shoes that feel good & look good. I award the staff 6 Stars. Not only do they practice COVID-19 safe procedures, they are exceptionally knowledgeable, professional, & extremely helpful. They were not perturbed with me trying various size shoes to get the best fit, & ended up ordering shoes in larger sizes for me. When leaving with my 2 new pair of shoes they reiterated if the shoes were not comfortable after wearing them for awhile, bring them back. I require orthotics so I have been unable to wear my cowboy boots for several years because I cannot get my foot in a boot with the orthotic inside. They worked with me to find an over-the-counter arch support that provides acceptable support so I can wear my boots without grimacing. I give my highest recommendation to Active Foot Store. I had the pedicure that includes callous removal treatment. Fortunately, Amy (Nail Technician & Medical Assistant) is everything I hoped for and more. The spa uses 3 medical-grade levels of cleaning on all tools: sanitizing, disinfecting, and steam autoclave. And none of those germ-filled whirlpool foot baths. I sat in a professional, reclining chair (like one you would find at a doctor's office) in a private room with quiet music, NO smells from acetone or other harmful chemicals. I will never, ever go anywhere else. Please do yourself a favor - try this place. read more

I visited the spa for a medical pedicure, which I needed after a serious illness affected my feet and toenails. April did a wonderful job, was lovely to talk with, and truly pampered my feet - which was so very needed! She's so fantastic, she books quite far out, so call soon if you're thinking of paying a visit, though you can also get on the waiting list and potentially get in sooner if someone cancels. The intent was to alleviate my heels rolling the heels of my shoes to the outside like tires balding when they support a car's suspension that is overdue for an alignment. Don was very helpful in helping me select the arch supports that I felt were the right ones by letting me take a "test walk" of 2 different brands/types (and price points). That helped me get a feel for how my feet will feel when I am walking for 8 hours a day. Hopefully this will extend the length of my work shoes' life span. I have been dealing with a foot/shoe problem most of my life that causes me great pain just above my feet when I try to walk very fast. No one ever correctly diagnosed my problem or provided any lasting solution until I met the Obi Wan Kenobi of feet, a true shoe Jedi by the name of Richard. He pretty much knew exactly what was wrong from a phone call alone just by the description of my problem and the type of shoe I was wearing (stupid New Balance never again!). Went to the store and actually brought my fitness trainer to advise me as well. Richard measured my feet, had me walk in my old shoes (stupid New Balance never again!), had me try on the proposed corrective shoes and lo and behold, my gait immediately improved to the point that my trainer noticed it immediately too. He also asked if I was wearing cotton socks (I was) and sighed at that as well and asked about the athlete's foot that he already knew that I had! So, I walked out of the store with the PERFECT pair of corrective shoes for everything...walking, lifting, cross-training, tennis...literally everything as well as 7 pairs of the perfect socks for not a lot of money at all. Since then, my walking speed & related weight loss have accelerated, no athlete's foot anymore, and my toes are starting to separate! Basically everything I thought I knew about feet, shoes, & socks was completely wrong!
