I would have to sum up our experience here by saying it was "just fine". The food was nothing noteworthy. We ordered the steak and red wine pie as well as the traditional roast chicken and sirloin duo which was their Sunday special. Both orders were incorrect when we received them (one had the wrong side and the other was missing a side that was supposed to be included). The sirloin was overdone and very chewy but the chicken was good. The steak and red wine pie was pretty tasty, but the mashed potatoes that came with it were dry and tasteless. They even had like a crust on them... like they'd been sitting out for a while. Also, the service we received was not great; the waiter was somewhat rude and could not have cared less if we needed something. The things they did well were ambience and drinks. It felt like a true pub and the beer was good and cold. I'm not inclined to return here on this trip or another as there are many pubs here with good drinks and ambience that have better food and service. read more

I was told to try this little English pub by a local. The vibes were exactly what I'd expect from an English pub! Everyone was very friendly. Football (soccer) was on TV and everyone was shouting at the game. I loved it! I wanted to try the fish and chips while in London. The chips were amazing and the fish was nice. The peas were a bit cold. Overall the experience was super awesome! The food was okay but I wouldn't say it was the best fish and chips I've ever had. We made the effort to locate The Albert Pub while in London due to overwhelming recommendations from P's father. When he was in London, many years ago, this was his favorite haunt. What we found was the quintessential British pub in every way. All of the wood, brass and leather appointments gave the place a slightly formal but still warm, inviting atmosphere. We were there in late November and they had already decorated for the holidays, which added a nice touch. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful and even tolerated our teen kids in tow. We enjoyed a hearty, warm lunch of typical pub fare and a pint before heading back into the cold. It was a brief, but enjoyable stop. Came here for lunch feeling optimistic about the food given a few recent reviews, but left highly disappointed with everything but the interior decoration. Aside from the self seating and having to order yourself at the bar, I found the food and service to be pretty dismal. Ordered several entrees, two of which were completely inedible. Wait staff came by and asked how everything was tasting and told them that one of the dishes in particular (Mac n Cheese) was not good at all. He told us that we were welcome to go to the bar and order something else. Why ask if you're not willing to make it right? Highly recommend to look elsewhere - lots of other great pubs within a couple blocks that have far greater food and better service. read more

This was a quaint Victoria pub just a short walk from our hotel. The bottom floor was crowded so we ended up eating upstairs. The decor was authentic to the time period. Our waitress was not from England so we had a difficult time understanding her accent. Our drinks came quickly and the food was brought within a reasonable time period. Made reservations for 845 o. Sunday night 7/31. Kitchen closes at 930. Got there at around 830 and told them my name and had a reservation. Host or Manager that they ran out of food in kitchen. We saw waiters bringing food out and others looking at menus. Odd that they ran out of ALL food. Asked if he could recommend another place as us to sit and would check and we can have drinks. After 5 mins saw him in the dining room and did not seem to want to help us. We left. Horrible experience. read more

First if all, I want to mention I very rarely leave bad reviews unless it was a horrible experience. Which unfortunately in this case it was. I was extremely disappointed with all aspects of our dining experience here. My two friends and I waited an hour and a half for a grilled cheese that came out burnt and room temperature. The waiter was very unhelpful and brought out the wrong drinks and argued when we said we ordered something different. When asked how much longer the food was going to be, after already waiting for 55 minutes, he laughed and said "oh my god" as if we were being unreasonable and dramatic. The restaurant was not crowded and barely anyone else had ordered food. Overall, if I could give a negative star rating I would. Do not go here expecting a nice dining experience. read more

Typical pub fare. I had steak and ale pie. It was good. Crusty was flaky but a little thick. Maybe a little fry. I washed it down with a lemon ginger kombucha. My wife had their fish and chips with tonic water. My son had Mac and cheese with rockets( which he didn't care for) and a Coke. It wasn't our first choice. You can't miss the Albert on this part of Victoria Street: as a building, it really is a survivor, hemmed in by towering glass and steel on all sides. From the outside, it is a classic, large, Victorian pub. The interior is impressive, too: high ceilings, elaborate decoration, with lots of polished wood and etched glass. And it serves a decent selection of real ales, too. It's what every package tourist thinks an English pub should be. That, as you may have guessed, is its problem. It's a favourite of tourist coach parties and, after they've arrived, service can be a very slow and tedious affair. Staff can be friendly, but too often they just look bored. It's pricier than other venues in the area too. Worth a pint, maybe, to see the interior, but I'd suggest the nearby Buckingham Arms or Cask & Glass if you want an enjoyable evening. read more

Loved this authentic pub in Victoria. Beautiful interior and exterior, bringing you back to Victorian times. I do agree that there aren't many beer options, however, I had a couple of pints of a lighter beer that I quite enjoyed. The food is NOT microwaved as someone else here has indicated. The fish and chips were amazing - a GIANT, FRESH piece of battered cod served with crisp fries and green peas. It was perfectly light and crisp. Delicious. I had a beef and ale pie which was incredibly crisp and buttery on the outside and beefy/saucy on the inside. This was served with mashed potatoes and gravy and fresh mixed vegetables. Our other friend had the roast beef dinner which was like prime rib here in the states served with mashed potatoes, roasted potatoes, mixed vegetables and yorkshire pudding. A LOT of food for the money. Prices EXTREMELY reasonable - fish and chips 13.99GBP, my steak pie $13.99GBP, the roast beef dinner i think was 15.99GBP. The pub is extremely busy and loud (which is part of the atmosphere). Service a bit slow but very friendly. Oh - and bathrooms are down a spiral staircase in the basement (quite a challenge if you've had too much to drink I am sure). I loved this place! We came right after a march- so they had just starting cleaning up from the crowds. Our server was really friendly and apologetic about our wait. We all tried the fish and chips... I had the vegan version- which didn't look (or taste- I had a bite of the real one) as good as the "real" version! Vegan version was still good- pretty dense though- almost like a slab of tofu. I also ordered a berry mojito- can't go wrong there! I would definitely come back if I visited again. Cute pub on the corner. Quaint inside, nicely decorated. Staff very nice, but not attentive to drinks. Our order was wrong, but they were very sweet to fix it right away. We had fish and chips with mushy peas. The food was fresh and delicious. There are signs posted regarding pick pockets, and my wallet was stolen from my purse while in my possession at all times. A bit polished for a true English pub, this is a nice, fairly relaxed place to get a pint and food. Yes, it is a tourist trap, but we were fair game, considering our foray into a "real pub" next to our hotel a few nights before that left us with sour stomachs. This was much better than that and a comfort given the rather corporate area the building is in. Named after Queen Victoria's late husband, The Albert can often appear to be as dead as the man himself. Strictly speaking its a lunch-time pub which caters to the employee's of the many companies that swarm this particular area including Transport for London in the building next door. It was whilst working for TfL that I first went to the Albert and I was pleasantly surprised by what I found. Inside is a welcome relief from the great glass and concrete structures that surround the building, with comfy stools and a genuine pub atmosphere. Food here is excellent: cheap and cheerful English favourites that fill you up without emptying your wallet. Drinks are a little pricy but thats too be expected from a pub which principally makes its money from businessmen and women. All in all a decent place to go, haven't been on the weekend yet but it doesn't strike me as a great night. Definitly the place for a chat and a bit of grub. read more

I was blessed to visit London last spring and stay in Westminster. Our first day there we arrived in the evening and decided to take a stroll. We rounded a corner after leaving our hotel and much to our pleasant surprise we stumbled across this adorable building that was The Albert. We decided after the long flight and travel that we wanted to go upstairs to a table and order. What ambiance. This place is now one of the peaceful happy places in my mind that I go to to destress some days. I suppose that is why I'm taking the time to write this review some months later. From the fire blazing in the fire place on that cold night to the candles burning around the room we instantly felt welcomed and warmed. Our servers were super friendly, welcoming us to the country. As to ordering, of course, I ordered the fish and chips what with it being the first meal in London and all. It was the best fish and chips I have ever had and I am now hesitant to ever order it anywhere again. It was gorgeous. Flavorful and just yum. My companions ordered the bangers and mash and the steak and kidney pie. To die for. They also have a Carvery on Sundays. We made this spot our home away from home while we visited, eating there several times, and we got to know the staff a bit. They gave us great pointers and walking paths to take in the sites. The Albert will always hold a special place in my heart. Should I find myself in London again it is definitely on my must do list. It is just off the district line at St James Park station. Can you rate below one star? I don't know how to do that. Likely the worst place I've ever eaten. In New York, this place would close after the first month. Awful food, worse (and rude) service. After we endured that, we paid the bill IN FULL AND EVEN WITH A SMALL TIP, and were accosted and grabbed and accused of not paying!!! How long should one wait for an attendant....or whatever you would call the person tending to clients.....to collect the check or even check the service? TERRIBLE PLACE...,,worse than a tourist trap. STAY AWAY!!!! I am a foodie and go to the best restaurants in the world! This place was a disaster! I was actually physically grabbed on steep stairs without anyone having checked the table! This is a shameful place for London. I hope there is better. And after a very verbal confrontation and my 72 year old husband going back up the stairs to get the bill and the payment which had been left on the table, there was not even an apology! We are in agreement that this was the worst dining experience either of us have had on three continents. Rather than London, visit the US, Paris, Canne,Nice, Broughes, Amsterdam, Jerusalem, Jordan. You'll be treated better and have far better food! We were accused of stealing! I can't believe it. In retrospect, WE were stolen from because of the horrible service and horrible food. Nice food but cold hot drinks. We asked for a meat pie which was nice, not amazing but was okay. My friend asked for the luxurious hot chocolate and got hot chocolate which was slightly cold and I asked for a cappuccino that was completely cold. Their desserts are small but full of cream which adds height and makes it look big. I am a fan of whipped cream but they upset my stomach unfortunately. The worst thing is that when we complained about the cappuccino they did not offered us to change it and even though I did not drink it - obviously - we still got charged for it. I want to add they at the end solved the situation but I had to complain and explain I would not pay for it because they served it cold. If I would be a tourist, I would have paid for something unfair. It is a great location and they need to improve their service to keep getting returning customers. read more

The Albert is very deceiving. From the outside, it looks one-of-kind, but inside, it is very cookie-cutting corporate as it is part of the "Taylor Walker" chain of pubs. My fellow Americans, think of it as TGIFs or Applebees of England. Try elsewhere. read more

After a day sitting in a seminar in a not-very-well air-conditioned building I dragged my colleague down to The Albert (been there a few times before and it does have a nice old pub feel) for a few pints on expenses before heading home. After a bit of friendly banter with the bar staff, who poured us two lovely looking pints, I got out my company card. Here's how the conversation went: Me: Can you put it on my card? Barwoman: Sorry there's a £10 minimum for cards. Me: No problem, we'll stay for a couple so I'll start a tab. Barwoman: Sorry, we don't do tabs. Me: Okay... well I will pay for four pints and you can pour the other two later. Barwoman, looking at the manager for confirmation: Sorry, we can't do that. Me: Right... well make it £10 and I will give you the change back once I get the second round. Barwoman, looking increasingly annoyed: Sorry, we don't do cash back. So with them leaving me literally no way of paying for my drink, we left the two pints on the bar and went down the road (The Greencoat Boy - nice wee bar and happy to take my card!). So they lost two pints plus two thirsty customers for the evening. The whole thing left me rather bemused. I would understand bar staff enforcing what are rather arbitrary rules but the manager was standing right there and was quite happy to stonewall me in this way. At lot of pubs enforce a minimum spend but I've never experienced this before - with a nice dose of attitude thrown in. We won't be going back. read more

TOURIST TRAP ALERT! This place looks sooooo cool. I'll admit it, it totally hooked me with its cool windows, it's mom & pop exterior look, it's European allure. HOOKED ME! These cool looking restaurants are located throughout the city (We also ate at The White Swan before we realized the catch) and the decor, location and theme are all so perfect that you can't resist, but then you realize that the menu in each of these restaurants is the same and it's a chain equivalent to Applebee's and then you are all, "DOH! I'm eating at the London version of Sizzler." Restaurant choice fail. Now, it's not that I am totally against the idea of frequenting chains; it's just that I would really rather spend my money at a locally owned small business and I feel that this chain definitely tricks people! With that being said...the traditional London pie with mash and veggies was surprisingly tasty, even if I did have to walk up to the counter to order and then be served buffet style. No table service for food in the downstairs pub area. I cannot speak for the upstairs restaurant as we only ate in the Pub. -2 stars for chain menu trickery. -1 star for self service at table service prices. read more

I have been to this pub a number of times, good value food and obviously a well known and popular pub for tourists, but on the day, I did notice some mice droppings on the seating, (brought it to the attention of the manager). London solved its notoriously "terrible food" problem by creating another problem. This pub, and many like it in London, are beautiful visual spectacles. Old buildings, incredible atmosphere, lots of history. But many of them also share another common thread - the "Taylor Walker" menu. It's a menu that's replicated in what must be dozens of pubs in London. The food is certainly good, but when you can get it on so many street corners, it renders itself painfully inauthentic, so much so that I'd call it the "London tourist trap of food." Speaking of which, beer. Boddington's, Newcastle... meh. I can get that stuff any day of the week in America. And the downright communist beer pouring rules... how can you get drunk in this town without carrying a flask around? Have a beer or two here... the food by its very nature can be skipped. read more

I stumbled upon the Albert late one night when I was starving and it was the only thing open in the area. After a baked potato, glass of wine, and consumption of the free wi-fi, I fell in love and have been back several times. The ambiance is so cozy and old-pub-y. It doesn't seem like a tourist trap to me, because from what I could tell mostly locals were there whenever I went, and my British coworkers like it too. I've only been in the downstairs, because the upstairs restaurant seems too formal for me and doesn't have a menu I'm interested in. It's true that downstairs they don't provide table service, but from what I've experienced this is fairly common in British pubs. Not such a weird thing. The food is delicious. I was super excited to see a vegetarian fish n chips option (made with halloumi cheese), which I've yet to find anywhere else, and it was yummy - a little too greasy, but still good. And I love the sides, desserts, and wine selection. I plan on going back many more times. read more
