We liked this place a lot. Several pubs we looked at seemed to be bars that only cared about serving drinks--not dinner. This one, though, had a separate dining room upstairs. This is a 'drinking only' pub if ever I saw one. Yes, its a very pretty victorian era pub that serves beer. Thats where the star is earned. The rest, keep it. The food is ridiculously bad. The burger is grey on wilted fixings, chips barely warm, fish not crisp and their veggies 'boil in the bag' quality. The wait service, forgetful. Not a place for more than a pint. Well I think I will fly in the face of the others who have left reviews. I went to this pub on Remembrance Day 14th November 2010. The interior is indeed a throw back. Partner and me had a lengthy, if boring debate as to, if it was original or refurb? Does it matter I ask myself? Anyhow, on this day they had a band called Rockabellas a nostalgic group of three girls who performed just brilliantly. I am in the catering business and let me tell you this was a rocking class pub day. Beers were fine, upstairs carvery, have to be truthful basic but you know £11 quid something a....what do you expect? Too be frank food was far off what id call fabulous but ya know it was not a fabulous silly high price session either. Atmosphere in the pub was just fabulous, packed for the special occasion (remembrance day) the band were stunning I mean the business!!! (Cannot over emphasise this too much) The staff were in period 1940's costume hair make up....all in all just the business!! Anyhow, all of this flys in the face of previous reviews (Which none the less I respect) but you have to speak how you find. The occasion I was there, one time or what.... This was pretty much the only restaurant open within a 3 block radius that still served food at 7pm on a Sunday night. The James's Park train stop is definitely a quiet area on the weekends. We came here with 2 babies and it was fun seeing the looks we received as we walked into the pub while everyone was having a good time with a drink. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and it definitely gives you that England spirit. There was a room in the back bottom floor that was empty and quiet. We were able to enjoy our fish and chips (don't be deceived by it only containing one piece, it's basically the whole cod), my husband had the roast beef (super tender) and my brother in law had the beef pie (yummy crust). A few of us had mashed potatoes and mashed peas along with other variations of sizes. The portions are huge. The prices are about 3-4 pounds more than the other similar restaurants serving these dishes, but I don't know about the portioning. My only complaint is that the fish and chips lacked flavor. There was absolutely no seasoning on anything. The peas were actually the most flavorful part of the dish. The batter was tasteless although the texture and crunch were good. This was a bit disappointing for me. The other dishes were good. read more

It's a bit touristy but we enjoyed our visit. The place was packed busy and we got the last table in the pub. Service was friendly and prompt as could be for a busy pub. The beers were great and the fish and chips were everything they should be. Generous portions and great taste. It's pub food not fine dining and that's what we wanted. The Albert's interior is a wonderful homage to the great Vicorian pubs of the past. Ornate furnishings and original gas lighting (updated to include light bulbs) make The Albert a lovely pub to sit in. However, there are too few beers, and those that are present are overpriced. The food appears to be mainly microwaved and this lets the pub down somewhat. The proximity of The Albert to Westminster means that it is a regular tourist stop, somewhat detracting from its cosiness. This, along with the particularly rude bar staff - try getting served without a sneer - make it an uncomfortable experience after a hard day's work. There are better pubs nearby that offer a friendly charm such as the Pheonix or the Cardinal, I'd check those out first before settling in here. read more

This is a quaint and cool spot in Westminster. Walking distance from Doubletree Hilton Westminster. Lovely walk. Grab a table and order at the bar. Good delivered to table with speedy and pleasant service. Mushy peas or garden peas - your choice. "Chips" are incredible. Curry sauce with your chips is a real treat. Fish was perfect. read more

They were very good and I got the vegan ones (since I don't eat fish) and it was cool for me to eat fish & chips with my sister! Had dinner with 9 others UPSTAIRS in the corner booth. Upon leaving, we discovered that one of the ladies small black bag with long straps was stolen. Management downstairs viewed video surveillance. Restaurant was super crowded and the thief used the credit cards & McDonalds and Starbucks 3 blocks away. As this was our last night in London, the victim & spouse had to stay back to acquire a new passport. We were all from Hawaii and it was difficult to determine how this happened in FRONT of all 9 of us, but guess thief's hands were quicker and we were enjoying the food and company too much. We were forewarned throughout our travels in Europe of pick pocking thieves and never thought this would happen in a restaurant of all places. The girls bag had a long black strap which we assumed was an easy target and situated behind her husband's back and another person against a short wall. The thief later returned the bag to the victim's hotel with passport + Hawaii State ID in place, but less London pounds of course and went on a shopping/food spree for the evening. Dinner was good at Albert's. Think camera's surveillance should have been focused in the area of the exit stair well to seriously watch who's coming and going. A very bad experience for victim and spouse, so be careful and bags and purses can never be left out of sight. read more

Very large with lots of space. For a weekday it was really busy and took us a while to be served but we had nowhere to go. We were just chilling. Such interesting character that isn't in existence back home. Love the outside window sketches. Prices were fair. As near to Victoria Station as you can get without it feeling like a train station pub. It's a friendly sight to tourists, but not offensive to locals (though they do make a point of advertising their afternoon tea). Because of it's close proximity to the station and Westminster Cathedral, it iis busy all day every day, and for that reason alone it might not really be worth your bother. But if you find yourself needing to meet someone for a meal or a drink before the speed out of town, youo could definitely do worse. read more

This is one of my go-to pubs when I visit London. This gem is located in a beautiful old building in the middle of busy Victoria Street. For the location, it's an excellent value - the brews are good, the bartenders are friendly. Table service can be a little spotty but hey, it's a pub. read more

Normally, I'm not giving many points, but after having not been here for ages, I'm very pleased and we've been there a few times lately. The pub is right beautiful and well decorated in the Victorian manner. I found the service really good, polite and effective. Ordering the second time the barman remembered my previous order. Nice choice of beers, including real ales. The St. Patrick's Day special gag-beer was one from Wiltshire that looked bright green. It tasted normal but the colour was revolting. Food was alright but not very good. I was surprised to have liked the atmosphere. There were not too many tourists. Only a hord of Westminster school students really nerved, running in an out all the time. On normal days and times of day a very good pub to go to. Free Wi-Fi. Worst toilets ever! The toilets are at the bottom of a thin staircase, with a door at the top. Makes human traffic very bad and awkward to pass. The toilet sits on a man hole cover, and is in very bad condition. They were also filthy. There was a sanitary towel on the floor! read more

I think I'm in agreement with others reviewing this pub that it's safe to say the staff here are not the most polite of people. Although 'The Albert' is overrun by groups tourists most of the time, the pub takes exception to groups of local workers and casual drinkers and the bar manager tends to hover/police tables of 5+. Quiet drink with one colleague after work? Go ahead and pay The Albert a visit. Want to catch up with a group of friends? Go somewhere else. read more

One of the highlights of my trip to London. This place is amazing. The beef and ale pie with mushy peas was to die for. They should call the fish and chips, "whale and chips" because it is huge! The atmosphere was like nothing I've seen before. It was raining heavily outside which made it even more cozy inside with the dim lighting. I felt like I was in a Charles Dickens novel. I know, cliche, I'm American, this is as close as I'll ever get. I was reading this place is part of a chain. I wish the chains in the states looked like this place, gorgeous. The building itself is worth taking a peek at (sneak in to use the bathroom and have a looksy). It's this giant beautiful brick building and every thing inside is wood with this great wallpaper and gold trim everywhere. Check out the curtains and each detail on the walls. If the beef and ale pie wasn't so amazing, I could've sat in this place for hours just taking it in. 5 Stars! read more

We were looking for a non-fancy meal near our hotel and tried Alberts on a recommendation. Bad idea. We ordered lamb shanks, and they were served cold in the middle, which always means that they were microwaved rather than cooked locally. We sent them back, and I ordered a barbeque chicken dish. It was similarly bad, made with the machine-made frozen chicken things that you see in big bags in warehouse stores. My wife ordered fish and chips, and while the fish was passable the chips were soggy and the peas were cold. It was a memorably bad meal, and the worst of our entire visit to London. read more

(hey - it's london.
