We were greeted by the owner, Katie, who I was excited to see there. She brought our food to us and asked us how everything was. I hope this bar becomes more popular because the food and drinks were amazing and very unique, and the ambiance was super fun. The first cocktail I got was a margarita with mezcal, and it was probably one of the best margarita cocktails I've had. The second cocktail I got was called skinny dip, which was a cream soda cocktail. It was soooo delicious and to me it kinda tasted like cinnamon toast crunch. Both are definitely new favorites of mine worth coming back for. For food, I tried the fried pickles, chicken nuggets, and french fries. The fried pickles were the most interesting fried pickles I've ever had. It's funny because I was expecting them to be like regular fried pickle chips and the guy next to me was also expecting that, but instead came out fried pickle spears over a tangy spicy sauce and topped with a blend of shredded cheese. They were definitely some of the best fried pickles I've ever had, and all the flavors just worked together. The chicken nuggets were perfectly fried and crispy, and the white sauce + sesame oil combination on the side was delicious. I don't typically see chicken nuggets offered at restaurants or bars, and I thought it gave a nostalgic, childlike vibe to the restaurant which I love. I think more restaurants need to start offering their own chicken nuggets for adults (if they are this good!), because it truly is a great bar snack. Lastly, the french fries were hot and fresh. They looked similar to McDonald's fries but tasted 10x better. The mayo and herb oil they serve on the side was delicious. The service was also great. I ordered the horchata 2 ways cocktail which was $12 for haply hour and is typically $16. $12 is the highest amount for a happy hour cocktail that I have ever paid and I dont think it was worth it. The drink also was half a very heavy cream so when you drank it you were drinking the liquid but not getting much of the cream. So you either had to lick the cream off the top or drink on the liquid and then either leave the cream or somehow scoop it out with your tongue so not really a well conceived cocktail. One of the fun and unique things about the bar is they bring out free tapas every once in a while similar to bars in Spain. They brought out edamame to the people at the bar right around 5pm and a group next to me asked at around 530pm if more tapas would come out and the bar person said the come out every 45 mins. I was there til around 630pm and another round of tapas never came out so do not expect that if you go. They did not give you water unless you specific ask for it which I though was odd, I heard 3 groups besides myself at the bar who had to ask for water, especially since this is supposed to be a nice cocktail bar and this is just one of my pet peeves but the water did not contain ice and was closer to room temperature which is not how I enjoy my water. Despite not being super crowded I had to ask for the check from 2 different people and it took 15 mins for them to bring it so if it is crowded I expect they will have pretty slow service. They do bring you a fortune cookie woth your check where you can potentially win a discount on your check or other prizes which is fun. Unfortunately the fortune cookie tastes a bit stale. I would say that this place is not worth it for happy hour but it had a cool but very dark vibe in there so it might be good for a romantic date depending on how good the food is.

The 2 bartenders gave us detailed background on both Nightcap and their sit down restaurant (Class Act) next door. Their beverage menu is quite impressive. I admire the fact that they experiment with different ingredients and preparation methods that aren't common in the Chicago cocktail bar scene. They have several cocktails that are in the $18-$20 range and some that are in the $35 range. The flavor profile of the Eye Opener was definitely elevated, but my first drink was wonderful as well. Nightcap was somewhere among the dozens of items I hear about, and I decided to make it a Friday to remember, or at least memorialize with Ye Old Yelp. Down the narrow passageway I went, to be greeted by a door with a brass handle and a doorbell. I rang and was promptly greeted. I made a reservation just in case, and was offered a seat at the bar. At the time, there was one other group of 5-6 other patrons who apparently never learned the concept of "indoor voices" in grade school.... But I digress. The vibe inside is modern and intimate. The translucent, illuminated bar top and otherwise dark notes gives a modern vibe without being depressing. One problem: if you are seated at the bar, with the backlight and no overhead lighting, reading the menu becomes a challenge without using the flashlight on your phone, which kind of ruins the vibe, to be honest. Onwards! I was once in a really fancy steakhouse, and I tried the A5 Wagyu, it cost an arm and a leg, and if I didn't order it, I'd've spent my life wondering. This is similar to how to felt about the T.V. Munson. If I am drinking fancy whiskey and that is old enough to drink, I understand the costs. Still, I'm sure we can agree $37 for a cocktail is steep. As with that fancy steakhouse, I'd be remiss if I didn't, so, subscribing to the 'YOLO' philosophy for a brilliant minute, I went for it. I can't deny this drink was fantastic. The smoke was more than just for show, as I understand smoke de facto rapid-ages a drink, giving it unprecedented smoothness. The cocktail was not only buttery smooth, but also had just the right whiskey notes to be loved by whiskey and non-whiskey lovers alike. It also had a spot-on level of sweetness and had some silky savoriness too. It isn't oppressively boozy, but enough that you know there's alcohol, and you'll for sure feel it. Oh, and the cherries somehow had the bite of freshly carbonated water. For my next drink I went for a Bee Bee Q, a savory drink inspired by a hot fried chicken sandwich. You know something? While not a chicken sando-in-a-blender, they did a fantastic job of putting the essence of this comfort food into cocktail form. The sweetness and heat from the honey was very light, and with help from citrus and spices, the piquancy was turned way up. Props for the interesting house-made garnish (a kind of cookie with duck fat?) and for the unique glassware. Next, I want to highlight their menu, it's unique and cool that each cocktail has a story behind it. However, it would be helpful to have more info on the flavor notes one can expect. Finally, I want to give credit to the service, which was fast, friendly, knowledgeable, and perfectly attentive without being overbearing. Final verdict: if I were the Bee Bee Q alone, it would likely be an easy five-star. The Bee Bee Q alone would likely be an easy five stars; however, adding the T.V. Munson makes things a little more fuzzy, for $37 is extremely steep, and a total bill, including a 20% service charge (for better worse) of ~$72 felt high for what I got. I can foresee return visits, though I'd likely be saving their speciality cocktails for special occasions.
