This is such a sweet little craft store! I initially came in looking for some fiber to spin but was instantly taken in by all of the really luscious yarn options. The colors are beautiful and there are plenty of weights to choose from. Many of the yarns come with variegated colors, but I opted for a straightforward uniform color as I'm learning how to knit. The person behind the counter was super helpful, too. She got me set up with the right knitting needles and helped me pick out a rich, earthy orange to work with. My understanding is that the shop offers lessons for folks looking to learn as well. It's a cute little store and they are friendly and normally helpful. But this time the employee was busy with mostly one other customer. I wanted some worsted wool (or blend) in two colors for the Gramps cardigan. I saw it over ten years ago hanging in another (now defunct) LYS before my grandson was a twinkle in anyone's eye. Anyway, they didn't have a couple of colors I had imagined (slate gray, maroon red, blue denim or navy blue). Alas, I left empty handed. I'd say it was a limited selection of worsteds that day. But I'm grateful it's here during limited hours because it's probably the best LYS within an hour of me. Better luck next time, I hope. read more

I normally come during yarn crawl but I was going to the closing of the Yarnover Truck in Burbank and decided to come to The Altered Stitch to pick up some yarn things. There's a really nice sticker on the front that makes a big deal about everyone being welcome, but on my last visit I felt anything but. Knitting is a predominantly white hobby, and when I entered the store the young woman behind the counter greeted me but then immediately asked me if she could help me find something. The way she asked the question to my ears had a "what are you doing here" kind of tone. I said I was looking for some double pointed needles. She found them for me but then I said I would look around at the yarn while I was there. Three other people came into the store, at least one of them a regular and while she greeted everyone else (all white) she never asked anyone else while I was there if they needed help finding anything. As I was looking around she also left behind the counter and I could be wrong, and I hope I'm wrong, but it seemed like she was following me around. Now I hope that I'm just feeling paranoid, but my microaggression sensors were going off the chart. Hopefully when I see the group at Stitch N Pitch it will be fine, but I don't think I would ever go visit this shop again unless I was doing a yarn crawl. read more

Social events are not free, but there are snacks, raffles, and plenty of hands-on help, so very well worth the fee. Last week I came into the store and bought a skein of yarn. The proprietor was busy with one other customer teaching her to knit, but she came over and I bought it. She immediately walked back over to the customer and I left. While in the car, I realized she didn't wind the skein for me, like I usually have been offered the last four times I bought yarn there. Four times to be exact. I Ended up going home and I tried to wind it myself by taking the skein apart and the whole thing just fell apart and got very tangled. About a week later I came to the store and the proprietor there said that they don't offer to wind skeins of yarn in the store, which I know is untrue but she lied about it right to my face. So I left with my tangled ball of yarn, which I bought for 20 bucks last week. Not a happy customer. I'll never go there again!!! So disappointed with the way I was treated! read more

Love this place. MY daughter introduced me to this little yard shop and studio when I moved here. I bought her a gift certificate last fall for a class, which she loved. She treated me to a Tunisian crochet class with Andrea, which was held in the spacious back studio space. Here, 6 women sat comfortably and enjoyed the instructor's undivided attention. They always have a beautiful selection of unique yarns, and are very friendly and knowledgeable. They also have drop-in help for hire, as well as a more social crocheting/knitting night, where you can come and work on your projects with others doing the same thing. read more

Great yarn shop with lovely yarn and great service. Products: hand-dyed yarns mostly in wool, but also cotton. A good assortment of needles and other supplies (stitch markers, etc.). Space: the main room has most of the yarn, while the second room has some additional products along with a large table and chairs, where you are welcome to sit and knit. There is also complementary coffee and filtered water. The etiquette page on their website reminds you to patronize the shop, not waste the complementary refreshments, recycle in the appropriate bin, and to take cell phone conversations outside - all this makes for a courteous atmosphere. I love the Altered Stitch! I stopped by in 2020 to get a gift card for my wife, but ended up taking a class myself. As a male knitter (1% of all knitters) they have always been courteous and patient with me during a class or when I am buying yarn for me or my wife. The new owners (Dawn and Sherri) continue to work very hard running the store. (I can't imagine opening a small business just before COVID hit--that sucks, but they have rolled with the punches). I have to give a star back to the Stitch. They put on a fantastic event this weekend. Their first ever "Yarn Tasting" event, "Lettuce Knit". This was a wonderful idea, and I admit, I was eager to come, but not quite sure of the logistics of such an event. I was pleasantly surprised to see that they thought of everything. As I walked in the back door, a feast of yarn met my eyes. The entire counter plus an extra table was full of little yarn samples in paper candy cups. Delectable! My fingers started to tingle before I even found my spot at the table. When the owner greeted me, she let me know to find my place, with a labeled goody bag and bring my plate back over and she would help me get all my samples. My plate overflowed! So what did Marcy do? She carried the remaining samples over to my table for me! Now that's service! Woot! And where was I seated? Right next to refreshment table. Yummy strawberries, finger sandwiches, mini cupcakes and....champagne. Yes, that's right! Champagne. So, for the next hour and a half, my companions and I poured over our delightful array of samples, both food and fiber, while chatting and making new friends. And when it was time to pack up, and I peeked in my goody bag, there were coupons for 15 and 20% off any of the yarns sampled in this tasting! And several samples of fantastic Classic Elite yarns as well. What a lovely surprise! With such a relaxed and fun atmosphere, the good 'ol Stitch has definitely earned a star back from me. An adorable, cozy place to cast on stitches with your favorite pair of needles. This time I remembered to bring in my flimsy-looking creation, which looks more like a coiled up snake than a scarf, to find a matching yarn. The owner was knowledgeable and extremely helpful. We went around looking and playing with different color swatches/materials before I settled on a shimmery merino. I'm embarrassed to say how much yarn I walked out with, but I'm proud to announce that I found my lime-green yarn, on sale, by Twisted Sisters! I took my first knitting class here last month. It was about an hour long and I can proudly say that I know how to cast on, do a basic stitch, and bind off. I already finished my first scarf and am super proud of it. The class' instructor was so nice and patient with everyone in the class and went to everyone to show them the proper form. If you're looking for a shop that specializes in indie dyers and hand-dyed yarns, The Altered Stitch is the store for you! They have a ton of indie dyers in the store, lots of fun colorways, and generally have a good amount of stock. It's a pretty small store, and my only complaint is that it can be frustrating when I'm looking for, say, a DK weight yarn and they have 50 colors of the fingering weight from the same brand and 4 colors of the DK. That said, I think stock is an issue pretty much all independent brick and mortar stores have; it's not like an online company where they can stock every weight of yarn in every colorway (WEBS, Eat Sleep Knit, Jimmy Bean's, etc.). Their trunk shows of indie dyers are ESPECIALLY AWESOME, partly because they host trunk shows for brands that are otherwise difficult to buy through retailers--either online *or* in store--and are from all over the world. For example, they hosted a Spectrum Fibre (UK) trunk show about a month ago, and it was awesome, as I'd never had the chance to see those yarns in person or had the opportunity to purchase through a retailer. My only other (tiny! minuscule!) issue is that there are discrepancies in the store hours listed across platforms. That is to say, the hours on Yelp, Facebook, and their site don't match. I know it's annoying to have to change your hours on multiple platforms if/when they change (especially seasonally), and I get it, but it would be really helpful. Thank you, Altered Stitch! I found my new apartment in part because I was looking for a place near this yarn shop. I kid you not! I've frequented many, many yarn shops here in the Southland, and have found a great majority of them to be stuck-up, cheerless places. Not so Stitch Cafe! The staff is friendly and helpful, the atmosphere warm and cozy. Great selection of yarns, books and accessories. Plus they offer classes on everything from beginning knitting to free-form crocheting to dyeing your own yarns. Since my knitting adventure started, I went on a quest with a friend to experience the different local yarn shops (LYS) on the Westside and in the valley. This was my 3rd or 4th experience in a LYS, and I loved it! It's very open. Not stuffy. There are young women my age working there. When I went in, I had no idea what I wanted, and I had a lot of questions about knitting. Looking back, they were pretty dumb questions. But I asked anyway, and the girls there were happy to help. I asked what a good beginner yarn would be (with no intention of buying on the spot). I found one and fell in love with it. They helped me figure out what kind of project to use it on with the supplies I had. I appreciate them not pressuring me to buy things I didn't need. I went home and started knitting a lovely scarf with it. Unfortunately, I ran out of yarn! The scarf is average length, but I am planning on making it super long, so I need to go back and get more. I look forward to going back. Perhaps I will stay a while and knit at the table there with the regulars. :) read more

Went here to start off my sewing skills and to purchase my starter tools plus yarn. The young lady who helped me out offered diff opinions and tips for me to start off with. She was genuinely interested and cared to get me off on the right foot. They have a great selection for yarns and plenty of sizes of needles to choose from. They also offer classes for newbies or individuals that have mastered the skill. A couple of ladies were congregated in the corner and looked like they were regulars who simply like to hang out and at the same time able to sew some masterpieces. I haven't been sewing on a regular but the winter months are fast approaching and I plan to visit to pick up some more yarn and brush up on the craft, as well. Def check them out. Love this place, the owner is super friendly and extremely helpful. I was looking to buy enough yarn for a sweater, a fairly expensive knitting project, and she was very knowledgeable about what yarn I should buy. She didn't try hard to upsell me, (which I hate) but she did give me a nice range of choices, pricewise. I ended up getting a custom order of yarn that I love and am glad I made the long trek out to visit. Note about the owner: She came into buy needles one day, and ended up buying the store, lol, it's a great story. They have an excellent selection, varying in price range, but seems (to me) mostly affordable, quality fiber. I highly recommend this place for people who aren't into snooty yarn shop owners! I went here honestly b/c i had to take advantage of my Groupon but i still ended up buying more than I bargained for. This place is the cutest yarn store I've seen so far and the staff are very helpful and friendly. I loved the fact that they offered to wind my yarn w/o me asking and have some cool perks like a "Featured Yarn" of the week that is discounted to make their pattern of the month. The only downside of the place is the prices. They tend to be on the higher end compared to other LYS's. But the selections are very nice and they carry a few great hand-dyed yarns including their own line made by customers called Delicious. I would definitely check it out just for the atmosphere. It feels pretty welcoming, yet quaint. You just might have to squeeze around since it's fairly small and there seems to be a group of regulars that hang out there on the weekends. read more

This is an adorable shop. There were a lot of customers hanging out inside the shop, which, IMO, is always a good thing. The shop sells a lot of Pagewood Farm and Dream in Colors yarn, which was what I was looking for that day. They also sell this very awesome looking 5 strand cashmere novelty yarn that I really intend to try out. Cascade Eco is on my list too. The owner is very friendly. Although I said I was just checking out shops for future orders, she still showed me all the stuff she's selling. I definitely plan to get some yarn from here in the future. Overall, it did seem a bit more expensive than the other shops I have been to, but they carry a larger variety as well. The staff was extremely friendly. When I was young I remember my aunt teaching me how to crotchet but as I got older I didn't keep doing it so I forgot how to. One day I just had an itch to start learning how to again. I looked far and wide for a store that was able to give me classes and not look at me weird when I didn't get it the first time. I found this place thanks to yelp and I LUV it. Wow the people here are amazing, friendly, patient, understanding and not pushy like other places I have been to. I love the different classes they offer but unfortunately I am not able to attend very often because of my work schedule.
