I drew at bear tag for the 2025 season and started researching outfitters. If you have one shot at…read morehunting bear every 10 or so years, you need to make an informed decision on who you hire to guide you. I was looking for outfitters that would be involved and supportive in all phases of the experience and had an impressive success rate. The more I researched North Country Outfitters the more I came to believe in was the correct fit for me. Bryan the owner kept me informed with texts and calls before the hunt to insure I had all the correct equipment and information needed before I left home. I received regular pictures of bears, and correspondence on current bear behavior on the bait that he had prepared for my hunt. When I arrived on site, Bryan gave me a tour of the lodge and then took me out when he baited the site so that I was prepared for the opener the next day. I also experienced some great comradery among the other hunters in camp. We even got to watch the Packers win on the large screen TV. It was interesting to hear the experiences of the guys in camp each evening. I was happy to take a nice 226 lbs. boar. Joe, Bryans helper, came to drag it out and weigh it at camp. Bryan recommended a place in town that caped and processed my bear. I left with vacuumed pack bags of bear meat. I hope to come back with my son in the next couple of years to give him the same experience that I had. I can't say enough good things about this hunt! It was a memory I will cherish as long as I live. Steven T. Elkhorn, WI

Kentuck Lake - The fishing is great!

My favorite lake on this entire sphere!. Kentuck Lake is approximately a 950 acre lake located in…read moreboth Vilas County & Forest counties. It has a maximum depth of 40 feet. Visitors have access to the lake from 2 public boat landings. Fish include Musky, Perch, Blue Gill, Crappie, Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass & Walleye. The lake's water clarity is low. The lake is completely surrounded by beautiful tree covered rolling hills. Most of the shore is rocky & steep. But, a few areas have shallow & sandy beaches. The lake has some of the best fishing in Wisconsin. The lake holds a lot of natural structure. The DNR sank a line of log cribs to enhance fish habitats. The entire lake produces great fishing. I've landed 2 Musky's in a day on the lake. I've also have landed Walleye as big as 26 inches & Small Mouth Bass as long as 20" weighing 5 pounds plus. Walleye's are my only keepers, everything else I throw back. Fishing regulations are posted at each boat ramp landing, please read & adhere to these rules. Keep this awesome fishery strong. The lake is surrounded by approximately 50 lake houses, the majority are only occupied a few times a year. Traffic on the lake is slow, usually a handful of fishing boats most weekends. I've had it all to myself at times during the week. Our family lake house has been on Kentuck lake for the past 18 years. In all that time I've only seen about a dozen boats towing water skiers. We are predominately a nice & quiet fishing lake. Typical noises that can be heard are wind, water & the abundance of Bald Eagles soaring overhead. Just the way I like it!! You can get me out of the woods. But, you can't get the woods out of me!

This review is long overdue. Several years ago, we visited Boulder Junction and during our visit we…read morescheduled a guided fishing trip with Bob. We met Bob at the appointed time (early morning!) at the boat launch. I helped him launch his fishing boat into the lake and we were off. Bob is a very friendly older guy whose background was in sales, I believe. Now in retirement,he runs these fishing trips and is also involved with local government and administration. His boat is great and had everything we needed for a successful experience: poles, bait, a sonar fish finder and an aerated fish keeper for our catches. I wanted to hire a guide because I like fishing but I usually suck at it, so except for a few times it's been disappointing. Not this time. Bob knew the areas of the lakes we were on that usually had fish and put his finder to use. We caught some smaller stuff that we had to throw back. Eventually I managed to land a really nice Northern Pike and later in the day he took us to an area full of pan fish (bluegills, pumpkinseeds, etc) and we pulled in a whole bunch of them as there's no limits on them. After we were done he followed us back to our cabin and cleaned and filleted the fish for us (I knew how to do the smaller fish but would have made a mess of the pike, it's totally different). He recommended Gooch's as a place to get great fried chicken and was on his way. We did eat at Gooch's a couple days later and it was good, but we ate most of the fish over the next couple days and I've never had such delicious fish. Fresh picked is a thing for fruit and vegetables and fresh caught is a thing for fish! Anyway, if you're in the area and want a great time fishing with an experienced guide, you can't go wrong with Bob.
